There’s just enough crunch here to offer a thrill of nostalgia to anyone who’s ever pasted up an article by hand or worried about whether the Opinion pages were getting bloated. If you’re dying for a hardcore newspaper management sim, you’ll have to wait.

A game all about recapturing the energy of the 90s beat-em-up, Final Vendetta works hard to take you back in time and delivers a great game in the process. Combat feels right, plowing through enemies is fun, then, to top it off, the visuals and music sell it all wonderfully. I wish there was a little more modern flourish and a touch more imagination, but what we have is still a great game at its core.

This all-time classic has great gameplay, looks good, and runs decently on mobile - but the controls aren’t always the easiest thing to navigate on a tiny iPhone like mine. I recommend that you consider using an iPad.

Marvel Future Revolution is a must-play for any Marvel fan, featuring a strong narrative and plenty of explosions. Even when the gameplay becomes repetitive, there are other game modes to sink your teeth into.

A new contender for the best wholesome game on Switch, Ooblets matches smart farming mechanics with satisfying creature collecting, and the vegetable critters known as the Ooblets are the star of the show. Dance battles are thrilling, and there are endless amounts of ways to customise and improve every aspect of the game but don’t expect to get anywhere quickly, as with so many different gameplay elements it’s easy to get buried under the workload.

Essentially, FRAMED is even more Monument Valley than Monument Valley. It’s stylishly attractive and milks its central mechanic, but there isn’t all that much to milk. Rather than getting repetitive or losing focus, both games just end gracefully after a relatively brief, not very challenging, but unique and thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Gerda: A Flame in Winter is an important narrative adventure that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with publisher Don’t Nod’s stable of similar titles. Just don’t expect to be smiling your way through this slow-paced and sombre experience.

Star Ocean The Second Story R is absolutely stunning and could be the best-looking game of 2023. With a gorgeous 2.5D aesthetic, timeless story, and the ability to play the way you want with a range of skills, this is a great entry for new fans to start their Star Ocean journey and a faithful remake for existing fans to return to.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble is a fantastic new instalment, taking the visual style of Sega’s long-running series to new heights. It takes a while to dial up the challenge, but thanks to smart design, it’s welcoming to newcomers and Monkey Ball veterans alike.

It’s not going to knock off Agricola or Galaxy Trucker as a full-blown euro, but as a quick diversion, Pickomino is an excellent choice and another really well made board game app for iOS.

A thoughtful remaster of two much-loved classics, Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX on Switch is a welcome walk down memory lane. Truly a diamond in the rough, these clunky little gems offer surprisingly deep gameplay mechanics and heaps of possibilities to explore.

Fitness Boxing feat. Hatsune Miku is the ideal fitness game for any Vocaloid fan, especially if you haven’t played a Fitness Boxing game before. The songs and customization alone make it worth it, but without prior knowledge of Miku, you might not get the appeal.

Although not a perfect conversion from the PC original and despite the mystifying decision to release the sequel rather than the first game, this is still one of the best point and click adventures available.

A Plague Tale: Requiem continues the story from A Plague Tale: Innocence in a perfect way. Though its gameplay can become repetitive, this doesn’t take away from what is one the best games to come out this year.

Possibly one of the most addictive games I’ve ever played, Loop Hero feels great to play and to master, and presents its grim, gloomy world with enough personality to keep you coming back for more. The huge depth and repetition could be overwhelming for some, and I hope minor issues are addressed, but none get dramatically in the way of my enjoyment.

Do not let the IAPs and steep challenge deter you from strong gameplay and incredible presentation. Iron Marines is an excellent mobile RTS.

SteamWorld Build offers fantastically moreish gameplay in a sandbox city-builder package, set in the well-loved SteamWorld universe. Fans of the franchise will definitely like this entry, along with newcomers, and anyone who enjoys building up a sprawling city from the ground.

Tormented Souls is a fine addition to the survival horror genre, the influence it takes from Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark is evident, and this only adds to the creepy experience.

Solo Leveling: Arise takes an established IP and gives it the videogame treatment it deserves, immersing you in the tension and conflict of Sung Jinwoo’s reawakening as a Hunter. It looks great, it’s satisfying to play, and it’s not gatekept by heavy-handed microtransactions or battle passes.

A unique arcade-style beat 'em up with an amazing soundtrack and gorgeous art style. A must-play for any fan of the Scott Pilgrim universe.
