  1. Written and directed with compassion by Noah Buschel, the film is a low-key chamber piece better suited to television. But don’t let its restraint fool you: As unshowy as it is, The Phenom has an impressive collection of tools.
  2. A pleasingly low-key effort pitched at fans of the first couple.
  3. The tragic victims in "City of God" are played by actors while those in La Sierra are flesh-and-blood real.
  4. Solidly old-fashioned entertainment.
  5. The script falters at the end, as the two reach the Turkish village where Ibrahim was raised. But the winning performances -- and killer '60s soundtrack -- save the day.
  6. Some advice: Don't even bother trying to figure out what's going on in Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence -- just sit back and enjoy the lush, trippy visuals.
  7. A daunting work that will please movie lovers willing to invest their time and intellect. Now I look forward to Fiennes' next project, a feature about Grace Jones.
  8. As the wife, pixie-ish Kanako Higuchi provides the perfect accompaniment to Watanabe.
  9. A crackling musical score and eye-popping cinematography add to the nonstop ferocity, and Wagner Moura is charismatic as the head of the titular police unit.
  10. This is a look at the joy, confusion and heartbreak of adolescence that's both culture- and locale-specific and, at the same time, universal.
  11. The plot isn't a new one (remember Lady Chatterley?), but Corsini gives it a few twists and turns that keep matters fresh and suspenseful.
  12. Though somewhat marred by cheesy docudrama re-enactments, the film (produced by Steven Spielberg’s sister Nancy) is nutty, dramatic, surprising and above all inspiring.
  13. Mother is yet another winner by Bong, one of Asia's most talented directors.

Shot in luminous black and white, John Boorman's The General is an off-puttingly adoring homage to a complete savage [18 Dec 1998, p.65]

  14. Raises an interesting question. Do you clamp down on corporations in order to protect the environment or do you let them go about their business because they help feed countless families.

  15. Author is one of the most entertaining documentaries in recent memory — and, possibly, the origin story of catfishing.
  16. Who needs mind-bending drugs when they can see this.
  17. There's a carnivalesque medley of subplots scampering about the screen, but Serreau manages to emerge triumphant with all the threads nimbly stitched together.
  18. An oddly endearing little chamber piece that provides a terrific showcase for Hoffman, surely the best actor who has never been nominated for an Oscar.
  19. The enchanting voice on the phone, who delightfully shows up in person halfway through, belongs to Zooey Deschanel. In real life, she hooked up with the composer of the lively score, M. Ward, to create the pop duo She & Him.
  20. As you might suspect, the 2012 dialogue is pure Velveeta.
  21. A sweet and charming treat.
  22. Deeply personal screenwriting and a superlative performance by Molly Shannon as a dying mom lift Other People above the level of many similar tragedy-inflected indie comedies.
  23. Preteen sexuality is a sensitive subject, but director Auraeus Solito handles it with dignity, never becoming exploitative.
  24. Footloose won me over early, with a sequence in which the hero gets all heavy metal while restoring his badass ... VW Bug.
  25. Girlhood veers between being a celebration of sisterhood (albeit an occasionally violent sort) and a chronicle of the cycle of poverty.
  26. The film never pretends to be other than what it really is: soft-core porn for the ladies, diluted with an “R” rating.
  27. Far more worth seeing than most of what's out there.
  28. The star gives us a generous and hilarious portrait of life as an aging legend.
  29. Wholesome entertainment that will please the under-10 crowd without boring their parents.
