  1. Deadly serious about its message: that the West is just as vicious and corrupt as Africa.

  13. Free State of Jones is enticingly difficult to chart. It’s anti-war, anti-plutocracy and anti-racist, but it’s also pro-Bible, pro-gun, anti-tax and sympathetic to the poor whites who usually get tagged as racist. Its hero is an avowed Republican named Newt.

  17. A great abortion documentary might leave you guessing which side of the debate the director was on. Lake of Fire is not that film, but it comes somewhat close.
  18. Harp’s mix of old-school masculinity, love of animals and innate paternal instincts suits Elba perfectly. And unlike Nomadland, which also brought together real citizens with a Hollywood star (Frances McDormand), Elba fits easily and naturally into this group and their environment. It’s like a rider meeting the perfect horse.
  19. Leguizamo knocks it out of the park as an armored car driver in The Take.
  20. Sometimes teeters on the verge of going completely over the top, but it's mostly saved by its own self-awareness.
