This could be the future of competitive tactical action, especially if it offers more mode variety and gets optimized matchmaking.

Silly humour and bizarre experiments on prehistoric beasts make Unghs journey a rather pleasant puzzle adventure.

Soul Sacrifice gives you a huge amount of content while constantly confronting you with decisions. It is hard not to get lost in the easy to control, yet challenging and frantic battles, even though the core mechanics get repetitive too soon.

Welcome to the Weird West. The turn based tactics inspired by XCOM work surprisingly well with the mysterious story that is filled with decisions and consequences.

Although I am not the biggest fan of “electro” music, Amplitude delivers. It proves that good game design withstands the test of time. And Amplitude shows why Harmonix is the biggest name in rhythm games today.

Short but beautifully mysterious puzzle-trip into a world full of bizarre machines.

A quite entertaining puzzle game that rips a page out of the Portal playbook, albeit with a lower challenge level, and adds an intense atmosphere as well as interesting dialogue.

The recognition works well and with the added bass guitar mode (which can also be emulated with a six-string) as well as the coop-option you'll get a lot of content. Unfortunately the game part of Rocksmith still needs polishing while the guitar coach has its flaws.

A lot in Middle Earth is reminiscent of other games: Fight like Batman, sneak like Ezio and his brethren, explore the world like in Red Dead Redemption. What sets Shadow of Mordor apart is the Nemesis system that works surprisingly well – even though it lacks drama in the end.

The Red Solstice delivers tense action that relies mainly on its tactical variety. Its biggest flaw is lack of content and mission alternation.

This is not only one of the longer VR gaming experiences out there. Visually it is a blast and highly immersive. Unfortunately there are little shortcomings in terms of movement and spell control. But nonetheless this is a prime example how old concepts can benefit from virtual reality.

Gears Tactics is a quite decent spin-off. The turn-based tactical battles are enormously aggressive and fast-paced, but clever nonetheless.

Rogue Trader is a late highlight for those looking for challenging combat and an exciting, if text-heavy, story.

Within the overcrowded genre of "endless runners" Whale Trail stands out thanks to its psychedelic artdesign, while the mechanics are similar to the likes of Tiny Wings or Jetpack Joyride.

Demanding challenges, a thrilling highscore chase and an editor – all rolled into one atmospheric jump&run. The inaccurate controls spoil the fun, though.

The turn-based tactics are deep and challenging, in short: on top of their game. Everything else though, from the narrative to most of the boring side-quests, is hit-and-miss.

On one hand you have the atmospheric stages on board the Queen Zenobia with constant changes between horror and terror elements. Unfortunately in latter levels the classic formula mutates to a simple action game that is average at best, even though visually Revelations is easily one of the most impressive games on the 3DS.

Building on the strengths of last years damn good version in terms of mechanics this is the best NHL game out there. But having said that, virtually everything else is put on hold – especially in the careers that remind you more of spreadsheets than a world of ice hockey you can dive into.
