Meet This Year's Oscar Best Picture Contenders
and Keith Kimbell, Metacritic Film Editor – November 11, 2018
Though the next batch of Academy Award nominees won't be unveiled until January 22, 2019, there's already plenty of Oscar buzz for films that have reached theaters in the past few months as well as a few more due to open in the coming weeks.
While the top two or three favorites have been well established since the major fall festivals (TIFF, Venice) ended in September, the remainder of the best picture field appears to be up for grabs. Which are this year's likeliest contenders for the top Oscar? In the gallery above, check out all of this year's top prospects (in alphabetical order).
In theaters November 21. The winner of the People's Choice award at fall's prestigious Toronto International Film Festival has gone on to collect an Oscar best picture nomination in all but one of the past 10 years, with the sole exception coming in 2011, when a foreign-language film won the TIFF award. So despite reviews for the film that were only good rather than great, you can go ahead and reserve one of this year's best picture nominations for 2018's surprise People's Choice winner Green Book. The film continues director Peter Farrelly's move away from raunchy comedy to drama, depicting the true story of a bouncer (Viggo Mortensen) hired to drive a pianist (Moonlight's Mahershala Ali) on a concert tour through the American South in 1962. It's an entertaining, crowd-pleasing tale told with a bit of humor but offering a message—just the kind of film that could sneak its way into first place in the best picture race if favorites like A Star Is Born prove too divisive.
