Cinema has looked at Augusto Pinochet’s brutal reign over Chile in thought-provoking ways before—from Patricio Guzmán’s critically-lauded documentaries to Costa-Gavras’ Missing and Pablo Larraín’s No and Post Mortem, to name just a few. The latest addition to this impressive stable is Il Futuro actress Manuela Martelli’s debut feature about how the sheltered life of Carmen (Aline Kuppenheim) is upset in the early days of Pinochet’s dictatorship. While staying at her summer house, Carmen is pulled into the world of political opposition when a local priests asks her to look after an injured man he has been sheltering. It is a meticulous character study with an impressive lead performance.
