Few would have expected Greta Gerwig to follow-up the critical hits Lady Bird and Little Women with what could be one of the blockbusters of the summer, but that might be part of the charm of the whole endeavor. Starring Margot Robbie as the main Barbie (of many) and Ryan Gosling as the featured Ken, this meta-comedy finds Barbie traveling from the plastic perfection of Barbie Land to the “real world” of corporate America. With an impressive cast featuring Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, Nicola Coughlan, Helen Mirren, and Dua Lipa (who also provided the song “Dance the Night” to the soundtrack), the first of a series of Mattel toys to make the jump to the big screen has a lot going for it.
