Icelandic writer-director Hlynur Pálmason’s third feature, following Winter Brothers and A White, White Day, takes inspiration from photographs by a Danish priest in the late 1800s of Iceland’s southeastern coast. Following Lucas (Elliott Crosset Hove), a pretentious and unsympathetic Lutheran priest from Denmark called to build a church in an unforgiving region of Iceland, this ambitious drama pits man and religion against the wonder of nature, examining proselytizing, colonialism, and faith in the form of hubris.
