This Spanish (actually Catalan) feature from first-time director Carla Simón impressed at last year's Berlinale, and finally made its way to American theaters about a month ago. The period drama follows six-year-old Frida—newly orphaned after both parents die of AIDS—as she moves in with her aunt and uncle in the country and adjusts to her new environment.
“Its jaw-dropping and gripping beauty does not stem from a drama-filled storyline, but from the simplicity with which Simón captures the worldview of her alter-ego heroine, and the complex power struggles Frida engages with her new family.” —Leonardo Goi, The Film Stage
