At the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, writer-director Maryna Er Gorbach took home the Directing Award: World Cinema Dramatic for this story about expectant parents Irka and Tolik, who live in eastern Ukraine near the Russian border. It’s July 2014, in the early days of the Donbas War, when their anticipation of the arrival of their first child is disrupted by the destruction of Flight MH17 by Russian surface-to-air missiles. With wreckage scattered across their village, Irka must broker peace between her husband and brother and rebuild their damaged home. With the help of her actors and a stunning natural environment, Er Gorbach creates a bleakly tense atmosphere and a timely look at a family and country in crisis.
