This adaptation of the beloved Nintendo franchise got off to a rough start with the negative publicity surrounding the casting of Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario, but the outcry seems to have quieted since then with early social media buzz being generally positive. (Yes, here’s your grain of salt). The film transports plumbers Mario and brother Luigi (Charlie Day) down a mysterious pipe and into the Mushroom Kingdom where they are separated, setting Mario on a quest to reunite with Luigi. Along the way he encounters Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), Bowser (Jack Black), Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen), and, of course, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy). Aaron Horvath (Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) and Michael Jelenic direct. It can’t be worse than 1993’s live-action adaptation Super Mario Bros., right?
