Ótimo álbum, Como a própria Billboard disse, o álbum “Thank U, Next” da Ariana Grande já era histórico antes de ser lançado, por ter estreado seus dois primeiros singles no topo da parada americana. Mas e o resto das músicas? Boas o suficiente? Segundo a imprensa internacional, sim. Nunca escondi minha admiração enorme por Ariana Grande, artista que afirmaria tranquilamente ser uma das maiores cantoras pop a surgir nesse década. Ariana sabe fazer canções pop que obedecem os velhos e básicos preceitos da música popular, emulando a sonoridade e figura de uma típica cantora pop do segundo milênio, mas com um tremendo conteúdo qualitativo em suas músicas: letras muito bem escritas, produção sempre muito reboscada e arranjos muito bem trabalhados. Vindo de uma sequência de excelentes álbuns, a cantora já emplaca um novo disco apenas um semestre depois do ótimo Sweetener, álbum que refletiu uma série de eventos que bombaram em sua vida nos últimos anos.

    A sequência inicial do álbum – com Imagine, needy e NASA – oferece uma dica de que o disco revisitará o R&B dos primeiros discos da cantora. Enquanto o single Imagine serve como uma ótima abertura com uma doce e ingênua vibe romântica, o delicado soul de needy fortalece ainda mais a carga neosoul que faz alguns compararem Ariana a Mariah Carey. NASA fecha esse trio ainda seguindo a estrutura melódica típica R&B das anteriores, mas já tendendo mais ao lado pop da cantora e ditando a vibe do resto do disco, que começa a se aproximar mais do clima radiofônico de Dangerous Woman. Exemplo disso está na faixa seguinte, bloodline pega características de ska e velhos clichês de pop girl bands para criar uma animada e boa faixa pop com um potencial forte de hit.

    O clímax criativo do álbum se encontra em ghostin, faixa que será provavelmente ignorada por grande parte dos fãs da cantora interessados meramente em sucessos pop. Mas aqui Ariana comprova a razão dela ser a cantora pop caminhando mais próximo de se tornar uma entidade nível Beyoncé, mostrando preocupação em fazer uma música que saia um pouco dos moldes da fábrica radiofônica e soando até com doses de shoegaze, com sintetizadores atmosféricos por onde o belíssimo vocal flutua. O single 7 Rings é uma maravilhosa composição que referencia em seu ritmo My Favorite Things, de A Noviça Rebelde, ao mesmo tempo que captura influências de hip-hop com fracas, mas bem divertidas rimas, além de um instigante flow nas batidas. Já o outro single, Break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored, apresenta beats estranhos e crus oriundos do trap que parecem deslocados do pop mais açucarado e inteligente do resto do disco, além de fechar o trabalho de forma anticlimática.

    É preciso ressaltar como, dentro dos padrões do gênero e do escopo romântico feminino, Ariana constroi letras verdadeiramente ótimas. In My Head aborda de forma muito madura o clássico “amor cego” onde a pessoa apaixonada cria uma falsa imagem perfeita de alguém, fake smile fala da pressão como celebridade em sempre demonstrar estar bem frente a câmeras, enquanto a espetacular thank u, next se prova uma brilhante canção sobre amor próprio e um dos maiores hinos pop que ouvi nessa geração.

    Thank u, next pode não ser uma obra pop tão redonda quanto Dangerous Woman, ou uma proposta alternativa tão acertada quanto Sweetener, mas satisfará facilmente tanto a tribo dos que gostaram quanto a dos que não gostaram do álbum anterior da cantora. Ariana continua a surpreender construindo uma discografia de músicas pop precisamente lapidadas e bem estruturadas, além de já deixar curiosas pistas de ousadia para o que pode oferecer em seus próximos trabalhos.

    thank u, next builds on Sweetener by switching modes of scale. It’s less about looking at the world than being by yourself, more focused on the textures of memory than our actions stemming from it. ... thank u, next is also Ariana’s most stunning vocal album.

    [7 Rings] is a hit, but isn’t actually all that great, using Rodgers and Hammerstein’s My Favourite Things as its sing-song musical base. The rest of the album remains of interest for its evolutions in sound, delivery and attitude.
