It's a no-skip album, an all-timer. An hour-long, sixteen track no-skipper! It's pensive, pretty, literary, openhearted, cohesive without being repetitive. I've just been a casual fan of her to this point and I'm gobsmacked.

The only thing I want to say to Taylor right now is “thank you”. I may never get what I want from her anymore (“1989” 2.0 is no more than a dream by now), but “Folklore” is what I and many other people strangely needed right now. I may never get what I want from her anymore (“1989” 2.0 is no more than a dream by now), but “Folklore” is what I and many other people strangely needed right now. It’s calm and peaceful, like an opposition to the growing fear and anger, which tear our society apart. It’s like a pure magic that Taylor managed to create something like that (and in total secret). Of course, it’s naively and unrealistic to claim that music can really solve the world’s problems (sorry, Bill and Ted...), but good music indeed can help people to take a short break, just to take a deep breath before diving back into reality. And maybe that short break will give us all the strength we need to recover... So let’s hope for the best and let’s listen to Taylor! Expand

Just like the title suggests, these are songs that are not based on Taylor Swift’s experiences. Nevertheless, she was able to tell stories in the most vibrant (and at times darkest) ways. The character arcs that she created felt too real that the multiple songs for the same narrative were never boring. She truly is one of the greatest lyricist of our time.

This is what Taylor needed, she needed a stripped-back album that showcased her lyric writing to the best. Now she is ready to show that is a REAL artist that can embrace any genre thrown at them. With soft mellows and smooth production, she is ready to show her emotional side (which has been done many times in the past) but for the enlightenment for critics and non-fans of her. Amazing

Heard the Bon Iver collaboration -- really amazing tune -- and decided it was only fair to give the full record it's due consideration. What I proceeded to experience was a painful subsequent hour. This is certainly not a folk record, as much as her fans might aspire to call themselves a fan of the folk genre now. And if you're really giving lyrics equal consideration to the actual sound of the song, then you're not a true music critic, anyway. Poignant lyrics (some of these are, others are typically cliche), can compliment a good song, but in no way can a song with poor melodic soundscape be rescued by good lyrics. The opposite is almost certainly true. Anyway, bottom line is most of the songs don't resonate with me. They don't sound good. And if you're a diehard Swift fan, your inhernent biases will be way too apparent to give this record a fair critique. Expand

Everything in this album was already expected and there’s no growth from the last album by Tayler. This album shouldn’t be doing so well, it’s success is only contributed to super fans who stick with Tayler through anything. After the album 1989, Taylers albums have been too generic and made to be repeated on the radio, but there’s nothing special actually in the music, just things you’ve basically heard before. All in all, I don’t suggest this album and would hope for biased reviewers to rate this album like me Expand

It's a sharp turn to the left for Swift and a fine reminder that she is more than just a gleaming pop phenomenon, but a remarkable songwriter too. [Oct 2020, p.36]

A modern-folk masterpiece which finds her moving from her previous pop bangers into stunningly simple yet sharp melodies, ‘folklore’ will be going down in Swiftie history as one of her most unexpected, and undoubtedly one of her best.

These 16 tracks (17 on the deluxe version) play out quite pleasurably in their entirety, the joins between Swift, Dessner and Antonoff ultimately only of niche interest. But Swift’s powerful songs reach their climaxes with bittersweet orchestrations, rather than blows to the solar plexus or a ringing in the ears. Everything hovers; little truly lands.
