Gaga takes a look at herself with this album, a journey inside of her with sad lyrics and fun beats. In my opinion it's one of her best albums, my only complains are that some songs fall short compared to the others and the songs as a whole (specially Sour Candy and Rain On Me) are a little too short

What a disappointing comeback. I personally liked Joanne and the ASIB soundtrack. On hearing 'Stupid Love' I was excited for the album. Then came 'Rain On Me', Ariana should not have featured on the track, her voice is annoying. 'Sour Candy' was refreshing and sounded great. But when you listen to the album, by track 5 you become bored. Every song sounds the same, very "fist-pumpy". I'dWhat a disappointing comeback. I personally liked Joanne and the ASIB soundtrack. Lady Gaga has proved again her worth as an artist as if she has something else to prove. Chromatica maybe too familiar but it doesn't mean that it's not enjoyable. With its incredible songwriting, heart-thumping beats and amazing collaborators such as Blackpink, Ariana and Elton --- this could easily well be an album to beat for the many years to come.

Updated 6/22/2020: 5 stars; her best album to date. Initial review was after one listen, and it was clearly already excellent upon immediate reaction.

However, it takes time for some of the most brilliant tracks to standout, given they are cloaked with so many references to prior records, lyrics and her personal life (eg, manic episodes necessitating antipsychotics in “911,” the continuing and conflicting psychological distress arising from PTSD subsequent to rape in “Replay” and “Free Woman”), references to paparazzi, fame and monsters, etc.

Truly, the lyrics of this Academy Award winning songwriter are her best to date. Most deserving of singles as of current constant repeat of Chromatica in its entirety (which MUST be listened to in the provided track list order for true intended effect):

“Plastic Doll,” “Fun Tonight,” and “1000 Doves,” but solely due to them being perfect for radio, with the latter having a resemblance to “Edge Of Glory.” Arguably “Sour Candy” was also made for radio, but Gaga shines most when solo.

However, it seems unfair to rate “standout” tracks based on quality, and thus I can only do so in terms of commercial context. Because this album, in its entirety, is like a cinematic masterpiece. The quality both begins and concludes impeccably. Everything is perfectly connected and intractable from the preceding or succeeding track; the three interludes are absolutely incredible and make the songs that much more impactful. Ideally, Chromatica would have been a visual album; each and every track deserves a video.

As great as Gaga has always been, this is hands down her best work to date, and I cannot wait to see what she does next. And if Chromatica fails to win AOTY at the Grammys, I would be shocked.

Initial review on day of album release:

This is the sequel to “The Fame Monster,” both sonically and lyrically. In terms of quality, it’s the best work Gaga has produced since “Born This Way.” An incredibly eclectic album (as depicted by the collaborations alone, I.e Ariana Grande and Elton John), yet still remains extremely solid all the way through; there’s truly no fillers. Immediate standout tracks: Alice, Fun Tonight, 1000 Doves, Rain On Me. Only complaint is the lack of a classic Gaga ballad. Well worth the wait. 4.5/5 ⭐️

Chromatica is an album that shows Lady Gaga still as a big pop star. Different from her other albums, Chromatica is more influenced than influencer, but it is ok. Above this, Gaga brings the new pop voices and keeps the famous producers' influence. The result is a solid album. The lyrics could be deeper. The concept is typical in the Lady Gaga discography, what adds value

I unstanned Gaga in 2014 when she got too boring for me. A jazz album, a country album, a generic buzz single and a mediocre soundtrack album didn’t interest me that much. A jazz album, a country album, a generic buzz single and a mediocre soundtrack album didn’t interest me that much. I was waiting for her to return to her dance pop roots and that’s what she did with "Chromatica". Unfortunately, the results don’t impress me much at all. If you leave out the three (amazing) interludes I like half of the album. Six to be exact; "Alice", "Stupid Love", "911", "Sour Candy", "Sine From Above" and "Babylon". "Stupid Love" sounded messy and dated at first but it grew on me and now it’s fun. "911" is the only song that immediately clicked with me. I love the dark pop sound and the deep lyrics. It reminds me of her best album "The Fame Monster" (2009). "Babylon" is a nice fun track but it reminds me a lot of Madonna's "Vogue". A LOT. "Sine From Above" could’ve been perfect if it wasn’t for that awful outro and the 2013 EDM dance breaks. The rest of the song is so beautiful. The other half of the album...it ain’t it. "Free Woman" sounds generic as hell, literally nothing is happening in "1000 Doves", "Plastic Doll" and "Replay" are okay but nothing special and kinda dated, "Enigma" is so 2014 and I don’t even know what that dated mess "Fun Tonight" is. "Rain On Me" didn’t impress me either and it wouldn’t have been such a big hit without Ariana Grande. Very mediocre. Overall, this album is probably my least favorite of hers. I thought her return to dance pop would be great but it’s a disappointment. Half of the songs sound dated and uninspired. Even in the songs that I like there are parts that mess them up a bit. It's not terrible but terribly dated. "Chromatica" is only an okay album even though its concept (and artwork) could’ve made it great. Too bad. Gaga at her best! Showing that the girl from Just Dance can still be our favourite popstar and show how to do a dance record that keeps us up and moving for hours. “… My name isn’t Alice but I keep lookin’ for, looKin’ for, lookin’ for Wonderland… The epitome of dance music for healing, as songs like "Fun Tonight" and "1000 Doves" will have you crying on the dance floor, while highlights including "Alice" and "Enigma" will have you screaming at the top of your lungs. The dark subject matter often serves in contrast to the upbeat production, like in "911" which deals with a substance addiction and "Free Woman" which is an anthem to overcoming trauma from sexual assault, yet it works so perfectly. Even the “more questionable” moments like the drum and bass outro on the beautiful "Sine From Above" with Elton John are iconic. Lady GaGa comes back with a new genre of music after her country-esque album Joanne flopped in 2016. This time the album is filled with annoying and dated instrumentals. The lyrics are tacky and lack common sense. Highlights include Sour Candy feat. an unkown girl group from China?, 911 and Enigma.
All the other tracks are mediocre at best. Plastic Doll and Fun Tonight are probably GaGa's worst songs to ever exist.
Overall the album is a major disappoinment after all the hype. Very sad for Miss GaGa!

Lady Gaga's most sonically consistent album to date, easily her best album if not one of her best, Loving the theme and lyrics and also the 90s dance/house influences.

this album is a thousand times overrated, some songs seem just plagiarized just to hear "Babylon" that looks like Madonna's "Vogue". An album is being acclaimed only because it is lady gaga otherwise nobody would have calculated it. Basic songs, which honestly don't know anything about me, not to mention "Rain on Me" classic pop song ready to disappear in the following days.

From beginning to the end, Lady Gaga’s most cohsive album. There is no bad song on this one. When you let yourself go with the rhythm, you will dance a lot but when you sit down and listen closely the lyrics, you will go deep into the dark side of her pain. Perfection.

The nostalgia in the production — a blend of crisp digital synth textures and ringing grooves drawn directly from '90s house music — further bolsters the shadowed euphoria of a song like "Sour Candy," in which Gaga is joined by the K-pop girl group Blackpink; "Sine from Above," featuring Elton John, gets a similar friction from the interplay between their voices.

Chromatica’s frank grappling with the vagaries of Gaga’s brain – and the way fame exacerbates them – ends up feeling much more real than touring dive bars with a guitar and a Stetson ever did.
