ARTPOP is not at all a worthless album, but unfortunately due to its hype will more than likely disappoint and ostracize Gaga’s Little Monsters as it lacks enough originality or even weirdness to be interesting.

Reliving the beats and overall experience of the Fame albums, Lady Gaga returns with another dance record that has a fresh take on pop. Her vocals remain prominent on the album, coupled with strong electropop infuses that resemble that of '80s disco and dance pop. She aces with her choices of production collaborations (i.e. DJ White Shadown, Madeon and Zedd), but falls short on her vocal partnerships. Her collaboration with R. Kelly on Do What U Want (also her 2nd Single) soars beautifully, but her attempt at rap/trap with T.I., Too Short and Twista fails to impress and comes off stale. Some other tracks also tend to have good choruses and catchy hooks, but hinge on being messy and a tad too adventurous, ultimately making a few of them sound like a few songs in one. However, there are plenty of standout tracks that stand a chance at becoming Singles in future. Her self-produced Venus, and other tracks like Swine, Donatella and Gypsy definitely have radio hit potential. The success of or lack of, as some may dispute debut Single Applause resembles that of Bad Romance, and could indicate the direction of the rest of the album. Venus, as well as MANiCURE, could potentially mimic the hits that Poker Face and LoveGame respectively were in the Fame era, although to a lesser extent.

She does good walking away from the overly complex messages that were imbedded on the Born This Way album, but her classic rocker side still shouts out on this record, discreetly hidden behind the secondary dance pop queen she's supposed to be. Ballads Dope and Gypsy flaunt this potential. The overall flow of the album is, as usual, sleek as it transitions from [experimental] dance to commercial pop to ballads and finally, an apt ending with Applause. Lyrically, she again sways away from the conventional success of clichéd lines, but alienates the general crowd with lyrics that are difficult to relate to and would limit the potential of each track (case in point: Applause). While this album is generally palatable, it really is engineered more for her fans rather than the mainstream audience. It still is a strong album overall, with dance beats that will excite and tease the bass-loving crowds while maintaining the strange unique quality in most of her songs. Worth a full listen!

Standout Tracks: Venus, Do What U Want (ft. R. Kelly), Swine, Donatella, Applause

Lady Gaga has so much to say, but sometimes silence is the best way to express concerns and personal struggles she has dealt with. Pretty weird and sometimes the overall feel is plane. Gaga's unique way of mixing parallel genres proves her denial to be compared with any other pop singer, even though ARTPOP's pretentious nature results in a superficial yet well-structured sequel to Born This Way.

I thought she was losing her creativity but I see she keeps finding freedom in the music and transmitting it to who's listening this album. Some of the lyrics needed to be refined a little more before the album was released. I enjoy this new proposal, it's probably one of the best albums of 2013. Most recommended songs are "Venus", "Do What U Want", "Mary Jane Holland" and "Gypsy".

I love it. Gaga is still in the game, but her songwriting is becoming... brash. "Mercury, Venus, uh-oh!", she chants loudly. It isn't the perfect pop record, certainly far from an artistic one too. But the album shows great promise with songs like Aura and G.U.Y. Mother Monster is far from her fall, but she certainly isn't in best shape too.

The album is not bad as they say, it's just an amalgamation of various music styles remixed. I confess that it is not the best job of Gaga, but it's not the worst...

Quite dissatisfied with the ultimate redundancy of sick beats, but ARTPOP was a reverse-Warholian masterpiece effective enough to bring pop to art and live it together.

Obviously, it wasn't a perfect album, Gaga focused a lot on the promotional thing, on the promotional singles(Dope and Do What U Want(feat R. Kelly), and it actually worked, but the real thing was left behind, the concept of the album wasn't promoted. We had an album inspired by the old Romanticism, the art culture of the 1600's, and she had everything to make the ''album of the millenium'', but everything went wrong.
Start saying that it didn't had a good debut on the charts, the promotion of the songs was a total mess(DWUW video, for example), and then, the media started a big fight with Gaga, and it will be really hard for her to reborn from the pop culture ashes.

(And it would have been a big battle on the Grammys with Sam Smith)

While it has its weak moments, ARTPOP is another solid addition to Lady Gaga's discography. Sure, it may not meet typical radio-friendly requirements, as her previous efforts, it stills stands out as one of the best pop records of 2013.

Lady Gaga's Achilles heel is melody and progression, she just seems to rarely get it right. However, when she gets it right, the results are truly impressive, as she's got a really strong and distinct music personality that's never lost even in the worst cuts.

A good album that stayed in the shadow of an average lead single that set the tone for the album and the future singles. People weren't interested. G.U.Y. or Aura would have been better lead singles and maybe the album wouldn't have been so overlooked. You can find the iconic Gaga weirdness in the brilliant Venus and ARTPOP, the catchy choruses in G.U.Y. and Gypsy, and the great writing in the whole album. All that thrown in a blender with crazy production, heavy beats, makeup, vomit, alcohol, and you find yourself with this great explosive and creative album.
Lady Gaga remains one of the few pop stars actually interested in making good music, not hits, and she is involved in everything about the album. From the writing to the production, to the directing of the videos, ...
In short, a good album, that should have been 10 songs long, overshadowed by a messy era which prevented people to actually enjoy the music.
Best songs: Gypsy, G.U.Y., Aura, Venus

This record is amazing. I can't stand the mixed or negative reviews this album gets when compared to the artistical "crap" that was released by Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus or anybody else. The entire album is written, (co-)produced and "done" by the artist not by a dozen of different songwriters or producers per track.

Great album, if it weren't for late letter exchanges and the pressure to develop a concept that would give Lady Gaga an image of her oddities in 2010. A pity that her manager destroyed an album with the potential to be successful in 2013 It is not a 10, but it is not a 0.

While ARTPOP delivers just that, it also feels significantly less personal and down-to-earth than its previous album, Born This Way, and takes us back to the glossy and sugary dumb pop songs of The Fame.
The album opens up with "Aura", a ridiculous controversial wanna-be song that is so full of Zedd power (Previous DJ and Producer White Shadow is now gone) that it can be called his song instead of hers. Venus is another bizarre, quasi-sexy song about, well, penises and anuses, and the album continues with sex related songs like "Sexxx Dreams" "G.U.Y (Girl Under You)" and the maybe most delightful of all "Do What U Want" featuring long-time gone R. Kelly. The songs are catchy and dance-worthy, but they miss to hit the note of connection the artist achieved with their so-called little monsters in previous albums. The highlights, though, are the ones that feel more close to the heart of the performer, like the feel-good "Gypsy", the instant hit "Applause", and the best song of the album, the melancholic and beautiful "Dope".
ARTPOP is an album about sex for the most part. It is certainly kinky, with its weird beats and extreme lyrics. ARTPOP claims to be inspired by Warhol, but I can see that Gaga went for the popular choice here. It is not the best album the singer has on her discography, as it is fun, but lacks consistency or overall the oomph the amazing Born This Way had.

Of course, there are some songs that show us how hard she's been working the past 2 years prior the album's release (G.U.Y., Sexxx Dreams, DWUW, Artpop, MANiCURE, Swine, Gypsy and Applause); but the other part of what was meant to be the story of "How ART Met POP" is like an old Hollywood cliche, and sometimes you find yourself asking what kind of ART she's bringing to Pop Culture in these songs.
Yes, no one is perfect and even the greatest people make the silliest mistakes, but when we talk about such a revolutionary artist like Lady Gaga, we mean that she is a perfectionist and always tries to make everything brilliant (she's said about it hundred times).

So I hope that ARTPOP: Act II will be in same matter that The Fame Monster and Born This Way were.

But i don't think there was a SINGLE track which deserves recommendation. Venus was probably better but that was probably it.Was very disappointed with Gaga's effort.Maybe next time!

Yes, there is quite a satisfying amount of well-composed pop songs here that could easily stuck with the listener, hadn't there been so many mixed feelings rolling around. It is her most explosive, well produced and strange release yet, but also her messiest, most tiresome album as well. As great as some of the deeper cuts may be, it is the first half of the tracklisting that contains the most cohesive moments, and in the long run, the whole experience steadily becomes more and more compromised by the hyper colorful instrumentals and huge beats (never mind the horrible lyrics). Had it used some trimming in the seemingly endless tracklisting, ARTPOP could be a very successful pop record, both comercially and... yes, artistically as well. Expand

It really feels like GaGa wanted to stick so much to her theme, that she actually forgot about the music... In that sense, it feels forced, and not honest. Sticking to the ambivalence reigning between art and pop didn't do her any service: it actually made her album feel unsure, and definitely not finished... It really feels to me, like every song is not really certain of its direction. The production is interesting, that's for sure, I commend DJ White Shadow, Zedd and Madeon for the beats, but I really can't help but wonder why anybody let Venus get on the ''final'' product. Yes, Gaga produced it, but she didn't finish it. I feel there's something missing there. I can't stop thinking about the amazing vocals on Gypsy though. Really feels like the most honest song on the album, and the most beautiful one. I do not know who GaGa was trying to convince, especially by trying to make us believe that this album was done 1 year ago, when it definitely wasn't... Lady Gaga released 'Artpop' in the same year Katy Perry released her own new material, while Miley Cyrus spearheaded her own attack on the charts.

The one thing connecting them all? None of them released their full potential.

Gaga manages to emerge as the most confident artist, with 15 very contrasting tracks, but it's a hit-and-miss affair. What cannot be denied, however, is her voice. Throughout tracks 'Mary Jane Holland', 'Do What U Want' and 'Swine', her soaring and wildly differentiating vocals adds a vital layer to the entire project, and her ease at transcending between vulnerable and outright vocal beast can only be admired. 'Jewels & Drugs' is particularly interesting, with TI, Too Short and Twista lending their talents to the song, which proves successful. 'Artpop', the title track, leads the listener down a dark path, it's off-hand beats, aided by Gaga's voice, gently eroding their expectation of the same old song structure, and is a personal favorite of mine.

'Aura', 'G.U.Y', 'Donatella' and 'Dope' fall short in this company, and this is where my biggest concern with 'Artpop' arises. For me, these songs prove just too experimental, with not enough of Stephanie Germonotta's own personal stamp. Her voice, and her direction, seem buried, at least in comparison to the other (great) tracks, while 'Do What U Want' evokes no emotional response for me whatsoever, regardless of her voice.

Back to the point of this review: Opinions. You will listen to Artpop, and you will either love it or hate it. There seems to be an unusually strong negative response regarding this album, but it depends on each individual's taste. In my view, Gaga still has a way to go before she releases an album that will truly revolutionize music, and the mediocre tracks on 'Artpop' prevents her from doing so.

She showed in "Born This Way" that she wasn't purely going to be a pop princess. She began showing her rock n' roll side, started to venture into more aggressive beats and showed growth as an artist. This approach was met with mixed reactions. Many people felt betrayed because she was no longer focused on just making pop music with catchy hooks, where others felt it was her growing into what she was meant to be.

ARTPOP takes a step backward and is almost purely a techno/trance album. You get overpowering beats that just come off as messy. When you hear the lyrics, they are boring and the same across nearly every song. So much of the album is a plea to the listener "I am super sexual and I want you to see me as a sex icon". I encourage female artists to explore their sexuality, lord knows American society needs women in control of it, but I don't want every song to be about it.

There is very little this album offers to fans or non fans alike. I personally think Aura, Applause and Swine are strong entries but most everything else is forgettable.

Pay close attention to the reviews you read. Many reviews are just hatred of Gaga without any substance and others are pure love that would never think anything Mother Monster do could be bad. I still love Gaga but this album just doesn't do her talent justice.

2 1/2 years until the next try I guess.

with the exception of two songs, so it is always the same, it's good, it's pop, but again where is the revolution, I was so excited and with high expectations, and as in the previous work it was coma feeling it could be something bigger in the sense original and new.

You are doing something quite wrong when you go from having one of the most acclaimed and successful pop records like The Fame Monster was, to something like ARTPOP. Lady Gaga's lyrics have never been a highlight, however stupid lyrics can get a pass if the production and execution of the song is good overall. Not the case this time, the only song that can approach these qualifications is Do What U Want. The rest is overproduced, oversung, oversexualized and poorly executed.

Let's talk about Gaga's pretentiousness. Wasn't this labeled as the new Thriller by someone in her team? Well, someone should hit that guy's head. The tittle not only is pretentious is also cringeworthy. I wonder if this is really what Gaga's conceive as art mixing with pop culture or she just got lost in the process, as per usual. This is more like Gaga singing about how much she likes to get praised, and talking about meaningless stuff, something she has been doing since record number one. Fame, money, sex, love. How innovative, does she still have something different to offer, besides her obnoxious, ridiculous and desperate costumes? If we take ARTPOP as the answer for this question, is a big no.

Funny thing, some people thought Born This Way was Gaga's lowest point. What a way to hit the wall.

To be honest, I just bought 3 songs separately on iTunes.
My favorite is Artpop the title track. Quite disappointing if you ask me. Nothing compares her 1st album. Certainly not the album of the millennium.

A few "heard it before moments-nothing new here": Gypsy (Edge of Glory), Fashion (davide bowie, madonna lite), A couple gems: Do what you want, Dope, Applause and Donatella. A few misses: Aura, Venus, Swine, and Jewels & Drugs. The rest pretty average.

This album is very boring and lacks substance to its songs. Only two songs on it are worth listening to, and the rest are just random words put together in a common, cliched pop beat.

lower than expected, sickening beats, lyrics without feeling some written by more than 5 people, Lady Gaga did not ascend to the expected level artpop only declined and showed that it is not so important to pop music.

gaga made her worst album EVER. this thing sucks, i mean, the big quantity of eletro pop songs are sooo boring, the only ballad of this album (dope) is terrible. this is not art, it's just pop and poor pop hahaha the only good musics are 'aura' 'do what u want' and 'gypsy'. i hate it

Did it add something new to pop music?
I don't think so ,some of the albums songs are creative but some of them sink under the the good ones
I really like the production of the albums
And I don't think that pop added something to art or art added something to pop

ARTPOP is a good album, but it trips a little bit as you listen throughout the album, and it is awkward.

Some songs like "Jewels n Drugs" and "Fashion" do not belong in the album and feel like placeholder songs. Here's a song by song review: Aura - 9 - A strong opening to the album; the production is fantastic in this song, despite the lyrics not making that much sense. Venus - 7 -

Some songs like "Jewels n Drugs" and "Fashion" do not belong in the album and feel like placeholder songs. Here's a song by song review:
Aura - 9 - A strong opening to the album; the production is fantastic in this song, despite the lyrics not making that much sense.

Venus - 7 - If Venus wasn't produced by Lady Gaga, I would give this song a lower score. But due to her getting hands on and making a 'not bad' beat, I have to give her credibility. Overall, this song feels like it belongs in the 90's or 80's.

G.U.Y - 6 - The beat feels generic in some parts of the song and the lyrics aren't her best, but it is a song you can dance to.

Sexxx Dreams - 8 - This is Lady Gaga's worst album, lyrically, but the production is better than her last albums. The song is also not your regular generic pop song and brings in a great 80's vibe.

Jewels n Drugs - 3 - Skip this song. It sounds exactly like the other so called 'rap' songs and the artists featured on it do very little effort to save this song.

MANiCURE - 8 - After JND, this song is refreshing and while not the best song lyrically, it is a great song to dance to,

Do What U Want - 9 -While also not that good lyrically, it (sort of) conveys a good message and the beat is great. Different from your usual pop song.

ARTPOP - 9.5 - One of the best songs on the album. This song sounds like something from The Fame era and upgraded a bit with one of ARTPOP's selection of beats. The lyrics also have some meaning, as she tries to explain what ARTPOP means.

Swine - 8 - Taking a drift to the more EDM side of this album, this song really goes in. With a great beat, but some not so meaningful lyrics, this song is nice and is different from any song so far.

Donatella - 6 - This song sounds like a more dumbed down version of Swine. I do have to give her some credit for taking a risk and making a song about fashion and designers, which isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Fashion - 4 - While Donatella had great beats and production, this song takes a BIG step back and feels like a generic pop song, just with some odd lyrics. I do not know why she hired David Guetta and Will.I.Am to help make this song, as she was fine with her other producers, (Zedd, herself, etc.).

Mary Jane Holland - 9.5 - The last noteworthy EDM song on ARTPOP, it makes a great finish, before heading to the slower songs. This song sounds awesome and the lyrics are not bad at all. It is way different than any song that Gaga has done so far (besides Bloody Mary).

Dope - 7 - This song does deserve some credit for trying to switch genres very quickly, but it does not execute it well. This ballad also has some okay lyrics.

Gypsy - 8 - This song sounds like another ballad at first, but then switches to Dance. This sudden change is the best part about this song, and it is executed very well.

Applause - 5 - While I was expecting a great song to finish this album, I was instead greeted by a generic pop song that you would hear on the radio. The lyrics are nice though and it feels like an okay ending song,

ARTPOP is good depending on which genres you like. If you like EDM/Dance, this album will be great to you. If you're looking for ballads, ARTPOP is probably not your cup of tea. Overall, this is an good album, but disappointing. Hopefully, Volume 2 will be executed better.

This is another album showing that Lady Gaga aims at the wrong thing. Although some songs in the albums are marvelous (Venus, G.U.Y., MANiCURE, Gypsy & Applause), the rest of the songs are focusing on explicit things, like drugs and sex etc.

I watched her 2013 iTunes Festival, and her songs were not as good as before. The beats are not attractive at all, and the topics of the songs are scattered. ARTPOP has no central topic.
Since 2008, I fell in love with Lady Gaga because of her The Fame and The Fame Monster, mainly because the songs are catchy and the beats are good. However, in ARTPOP, Lady Gaga failed to deliver her message successfully and Zedd (to be honest, although I like him very much) is not as good as RedOne or Fernando Garibay.
Some of the songs (Jewels N' Drugs, Fashion! & Mary Jane Holland) are really BAD. The are just like CRAP. And I dunno why Lady Gaga intend to put these songs into ARTPOP.
I am basically dissatisfied with ARTPOP and I hope to see The Fame Gaga or The Fame Monster Gaga in the coming future.

This album was a big let down. It did not meet my expectations. Although her efforts to correlate music with art is very commendable, it was futile, as she was able to express but not deliver very well. Her past albums were fantastic, this one brought uniqueness in the industry but thhe music itself was not captivating.

This album is a piece of crap. The sounds in most of the songs are annoying. She's just trying to stay relevant because no one pays attention to her anymore. That's why it flopped I guess. Even her clown costumes already bored the media. Good Luck Gaga.

The melodies here are fine, they do a job, but nothing backs up Gag's Warholian rhetoric or scales the barmy heights of Bad Romance. [Jan 2014, p.116]

While it’s stronger than the messy ‘Born This Way’, Artpop feels little more culture-quaking than a good collection of fun, silly, well-crafted pop songs.
