This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This is one of the Lady Gaga's best creations. ARTPOP has a whole concept that covers many interesting topics in addition to a bit of her life. Their sounds and melodies were always ahead of their time but truly each song is a masterpiece, it's lyrics have a great meaning and the production is amazing that deserves to be appreciated. The fact that it took 7 years for general public to appreciate this album, says a lot about how ahead of its time it was with it's heavy EDM sound, great concepts. You can really feel how personal this album is to it's creator. 2013 was a big year for female pop, it's very sad that people decided to make Lady Gaga the odd one out. Its not fair.

Amazing how the album aged like a good wine even drinking from the EDM fountain (where it was widely used in 2013) and could become dated, but the production managed to stand out from the sameness for being very bold and Experimental for the time. I give it a 10 for a very simple reason: there's nothing out there that sounds like it.
It's a very good example of sophisticated and refined EDM-pop. Just the opening track Aura already features many moments of heightened ecstasy once it ventures in the wobbly bridge where scatting beats meet fuzzy vocals.
I happen to be very neutral about Venus and G.U.Y. I don't hate the tracks, but I

It's a very good example of sophisticated and refined EDM-pop. Just the opening track Aura already features many moments of heightened ecstasy once it ventures in the wobbly bridge where scatting beats meet fuzzy vocals.
I happen to be very neutral about Venus and G.U.Y. I don't hate the tracks, but I also don't see why so many people go head over heels for them.
The true highlights are on the later part of the album. Fashion!, though hated by many, is actually a very well-crafted anthem alluding to the refuge of projections. Gaga has mentioned many times how she always felt like a superstar, and her fashion reflected that. There's too much complexity lying behind the seemingly shallow lyrics, and a lot of it can be boiled down to queer identity. It's a song about liberation, about uplifting yourself when no one else does, and it is my personal favorite.
Mary Jane Holland, in terms of sound, is pure bliss. The lyrics are campy and playful, but they do extend on the commentary on fame Gaga did many years back. In here we see Gaga finding joy in anonymity. Being able to finally let out her wild side when embodying a persona. It has even more layers once you put into account that Gaga herself is a persona of Stefani, and how even Gaga has to sometimes escape from being herself to be free.
Gypsy is what Chromatica went on to be. A supercut of Gaga's whole career. In here, we see the joy her artistry brings, but also the pain. The duality of pain and beauty are perfectly underlined in the upbeat instrumental coalescing wonderfully with the gritty lyrics.
Though Dope and Applause are great tracks, I don't feel like they truly have a place in the sound channeled in all the other tracks.
I love ARTPOP, even if the stans might have ruined it for me.

One of the most interesting albums to come out in 2013, negative reviews are expected but seems to be influenced by writers' opinion about the artist.
Artpop is loud, fun, simple and brilliant. Chromesthesia has me feeling a colorful candy like music, mindless most of the time but blissful.
Aura is a freakishly ridiculous song about of her artistry, with traces of Bad Romance dotted here and there, the album starts strong, getting crazier the further I go.
Venus gives fans a bit of nostalgia echoing songs from The Fame, the lyrics "Don't you know my ass is famous!?" might be the most memorable line of the whole album.
G.U.Y. and Sexxx Dreams disappointingly feel like fillers on the album as a whole, though they are very good songs on their own, catchy with killer choruses, they fail to make an impression like the first two songs.
Jewels n' Drugs, despite it's Hip-Hop influenced production, in the end it still feels like a pop song, her courage to dabble in Hip-Hop is commending, creating a
Manicure is the loudest and wildest song here, barely sticking to a central structure. The outro is epic, transitioning to the next song with dignity.
Do What U Want is the highlight of the middle part of the album. like Jewels, Lady Gaga is found dabbling in a different genre from most of her music, she and Kelly sing of fame and sex with straightforward lyrics, no poetry here but it works.
Artpop and Swine both also feel like fillers. Although many may argue that Swine is a song worth of note, it is, but explosive and mindless it may be I find Lady Gaga once again playing safe with typical pop songs. Artpop was a personal favorite, but after a few listens it fell into the category of songs that would be ignored in a play through.
Donatella and Fashion has Lady Gaga singing about fashion again after her song with Heidi Montag "Fashion", and overall does miles better than the first incarnation of "Fashion". She name'checks less brands this time, focusing more on the lifestyle, ultimately making her less amateuristic. But, compared to the whole album, Donatella and Fashion marks the lowest point the album in terms of sonic impact and overall fun-ness.
Mary Jane Holland and Dope both sing of drugs but do so in different ways. one confesses her love for it while the other sings about her mixed feelings toward it. Mary Jane Holland is an above average pop song, catchy enough but not suitable to be a single. Dope however is interesting. the most emotional and personal song of the album, using only what seems to be just three instruments, her powerful voice is highlighted here, screaming the lyrics towards the end of the song,
Gypsy is the most beautiful original song Lady Gaga has ever sung, it's hard to describe it with my limited English. She sings of her experience travelling the world without a home, like a gypsy. The chorus soars higher than anything she's sung, her voice warm and strong, giving the song a happier tone than the rest of the album. Shouting out geographical names in the end touched a lot of her international fans, she even managed to sneak in to mention her faux German in a previous song. If this songs ever becomes a single, critics will single this out as a high point of her artistry.
The album ends with Applause, which seems appropriate. The media has dissected this song already, I don't think I can add another perspective by now.
Overall, Artpop is a masterpiece, it has it's highs and lows but it successfully differentiates itself from the nauseatingly generic pop albums these days. If this were Lady Gaga's first album, there wouldn't be this much negativity towards the album as most people tend to judge an artist's work based on the the artist's qualities rather than the quality of the work itself.

It's like she took a mix of her sound from The Fame and a little bit of Born This Way, and it works fantastically. WARNING: It is VERY heavy on the Pop sound so I would not recommend this if you're not the biggest fan of pop.

Feeling less of a mixed bag than Born This Way, the sounds and quality of these songs read more cohesively than on it’s predecessor. ARTPOP is essentially one giant electronic dance pop album. And for every experimental verse is a HUGE pop chorus. (As exhibited by “Aura” and “Venus”). There’s variety to Gaga’s vocal delivery, while often displaying a throatier bellow (As exhibited by “MANiCURE”, “Do What U Want”, and “DOPE”).
As with Born This Way, the promotional campaign for ARTPOP has been primarily hype. Gaga debuted half the album two months prior at the 2013 iTunes Festival. I found that I preferred the lower vocal delivery and more industrial rockier feel of the songs from the performance (except “Jewels & Drugs”), but I believe this says more about Gaga as a performer, than it says about the Album lacking. But unlike Born This Way, the overarching Theme is not communicated well, if at all. A “reverse Warholian expedition” this is not. Save for “Venus” which is semi-inspired by the famous Boticelli painting, we have mere mentions of this idea in “ARTPOP” and “Applause” in which she explains that “ARTPOP could be anything”, “We could belong together”, and “One second I’m a Koons, then suddenly the Koons is me”.
As far as the songs go, they’re crafted well and sound fantastic. Even trap-y “Jewels & Drugs” sounds okay, despite the mess it was during iTunes Fest. “Aura” with its cinematic intro and glitchy verses, certainly Gaga at her most experimental, is still grounded in a glorious pop chorus. The galactic “Venus” demonstrates harmonized chanting vocals reminiscent of QUEEN or Bowie, and brings it to a chorus possibly as big as “Bad Romance”. “G.U.Y” and “Sexxx Dreams” both dark and dirty dance songs demonstrate an airier vocal, with the later sounding like Janet Jackson followed by a Disco bridge. 80’S rock romp “MANiCURE” channels Pat Benatar, complete with a chanting chorus and eerie sci-fi synth. “Do What U Want”, with throatier Christina Aguilerian vocals, pulsates and throbs while dismissing critics (and enticing lovers). Gaga softly coos over underwater bleeps and pulses, while percolating beats build with angelic wailing on “ARTPOP”. Hiccups, squeaks, and grunts jitter over bubbly synths culminating in a huge drop, bringing out the rave in “Swine”. “Donatella” exhibits the snarky, ironic, satirical lyrics of The Fame (while also weirdly paying homage to friend and designer Versace?). Glittery piano introduces “Fashion!”, a strutting disco number that harkens Bowie (while sharing the title of practically 5 previously released songs). The throbbing “Mary Jane Holland” displays some more ironic lyrics while theatrically confessing love for weed. The confessional “Dope”, and sprawling “Gypsy” take up the piano ballad spots of the album, while utilizing synths to help integrate the songs with the album, unlike on previous Gaga records. And ending on the finale of “Applause”.
As much as ARTPOP may not be doing what it needed to conceptually, sonically it provides much to be satisfied with.

ARTPOP, a record name that sounds both intriguing and worrying at the same time. At first i feared an overly pretentious or self-indulgent record la born this way. The production of this record is simply mesmerizing, Madeon, Zedd and DJWS actually did a great job. (especially DJWS who proved me wrong after all the misfires on BTW). I'll give you a short track by track review:

    1) aura: messy, disjointed and sounds like it isn't finished nor polished... Great chorus though. 4/10
    2) venus: great hooks, yet it feels like they tried to put too much into one song, yet i don't hate it! 8/10
    3) G.U.Y: lush production, excellent clubbing song and great bridge. 9.5/10
    4) sexxx dreams: sounds like an instant hit and a classic gaga song. 9/10
    5) jewels and drugs: i'm still trying to process this one, yet i think i kind of like it?! not sure though 7/10
    6) manicure: great song, great hooks, great verses this is pop music done right. 10/10
    7) Do what you want: smooth, tropical and juicy hooks. 9/10
    8) ARTPOP: Mysterious, and a little bit boring... 6/10
    9) Swine: clubbing anthem, overall great, but at times a bit clunky. 8.5/10
    10) Donatella: cool jam, great chorus, however lyrics tend to be a bit cringe-worthy.: 9/10
    11) fashion!: a record filler, not a terrible one at that, but filler nonetheless.: 5/10
    12) Mary Jane Holland: High, trashy and brilliant. 9.5/10
    13) Dope: excellent, toned-down power ballad in the way only she could do. 9/10
    14) Gypsy: pure and utter euphoria.: 10/10
    15) applause: weak, boring and overly narcissistic.: 5/10

    - album pro's: excellent vocals, powerful hooks, beautiful production and overall a fun dance record!
    - album contra's: it's hit-or-miss lyrics and the name... this is excellent pop but let's face it, this isn't art.

When it comes to Lady Gaga, her lyrics might sound simple but it has lots of meaning to it. The track listing is perfect, it tells a story from the beginning to the end. Applause ending the album is perfect. Yes, she is very experimental with her songs but i think she didn't venture enough like Jewels & Drugs and too complex like Aura. But overall amazing

Most of the people say they found hard to understand where's the 'art' in the album. But, every music, whatever it is, is an art. You don't put words such as, 'Picasso', 'Warhol', etc. for your music to embodies art. Maybe, Gaga is trying to sell the 'art' in how she present her music, from some intro in the song, the album cover, sculpture made by Koons, even the mural in presenting the track list.
Sometimes, Gaga is over the top with her artistic side, but you'll always be pleased with her performance with whatever she's done. This album is one of the proof. This less than The Fame Monster, but somehow beat Born This Way.
If you're a pop fan, you'll be happy and satisfied with this album. Artpop has more ups than down.

While the album is not revolutionary, it is a high quality electronic album that provides unique dance rhythms and great production work. Album standouts include: G.U.Y., Gypsy, Mary Jane Holland, Swine. Gaga showcases her wide range of voices on the album, ranging from the David Bowie-esque Applause to the high squeals of Swine. Some tracks sound incomplete or out of place, but it is a solid LP.

Born This Way featured some of Gaga's best songs, and best songwriting to date (Marry the Night, Schiesse, Hair, Edge of Glory) but was seen as being dragged down by all of its artistic pretensions and messaging.

Gaga herself stated that her previous record was an attempting at being mature, and ARTPOP is her allowing herself to be a bit immature. Through that lens it is easy to understand ARTPOP's mission: to make you dance.

And so ARTPOP comes with a much higher ratio of outright bangers, all reminding us of the dizzying diversity of her musical influences as she genre-trips through the album's 60 minutes.

This is a fun, immature pop album which, while perhaps empty of meaningful commentary, was designed to be exactly that. They are vague allusions to high art, but she really just wants you to dance again.

Is it a musical regression? Not quite. Gaga experiments with a far broader spectrum of genres than before (even a respectable attempt at electro-trap) and has incorporated new influences that should fuel interesting developments in her future albums, when her career is in a place that allows for even more musical experimentation.

Meanwhile, she has added another batch of career defining jams to her cannon, and has shown that even though she is clearly moving in a direction that responds to some of her more recent criticisms, she is still, without a doubt, her own woman.

Lyrically speaking, ARTPOP is a mixed bag. While not always Gaga's strongest material, you will find many influences spanning Leonoard Cohen in Dope and the B52s, (and an amazing nod to Sun Ra,) in Venus. Donnatella seems to be the weakest lyrically, but taking that song too seriously would be foolish; it's about as tongue and cheek as it gets.

I would have loved to give this album a perfect 10, but Gaga's only misstep was Jewels N Drugs; a track that I have deleted from my ARTPOP playlist and will simply pretend never happened. Please never do rap again, Miss Gaga! It is not your strong suit!

Overall, ARTPOP is a sonic confection and should be enjoyed by many, especially those of us who have been so fond of her antics for so long.

Sure, there are a few and fillers (Donatella, Jewels and Drugs), but when listening from start to finish, the album has a surprising coherency and makes more sense. The decision to put Aura as the opening track was something that I immediately worried about, but it worked as an opener, and Applause, which might seem like a mediocre pop song as a standalone track, worked phenomenally well as an album closer.

And one of the main reasons is definitely its informality of sound in the genre of pop and yet great and perfectly designed catchy melodies and hooks, which stand out and prove to lead the listener to a nearly psychedelic state of the spirit. And all that complimented with lyrical sweetness, joy and rage. Rage that mesmerizes the mind, a trip from planet to planet, condensed with sex and pain, with wisdom and immaturity.
It is a matter of fact that there are generally two ways to navigate through the work of Lady Gaga a pop and an art one. And that is no phenomenon of this album. One could simply unleash memories and emotions while listening to the galactic pop of Mother Monster or one could delve deeper into the meanings and milestones that she intricately embeds into her work. Jeff Koons or the Bible (in Born this Way) there is no emptiness of sense, of message in her work.
ARTPOP celebrates the achieved freedom of Born This Way. 'I own the world, we own the world" she declares. And most certainly this direct statement has its effect.
The only drawback that actually stands out is the production. And not that it is in any way bad. The feeling of the album is however a bit overproduced and a bit overqualified in terms of pop power. What I mean is that some of the tracks (Swine for instance) would have been more emotionally charged if it wasn't for the final sound of them. But perhaps that was the intention of it all to belong somewhat together.
A rap song irritates the ear at first but later becomes pleasing and fits in its place.
A 2 year pause proves to be beneficial to the album. If I could name it any other way ARCHPOP for its quality.

But even so, there is something else there. It's not hollow pop, her messages are there if you look for them. I think the whole idea behind "artpop" is that Gaga isn't just about the fame, or the love, or the money, but about the message she gives and the people she inspires. Her Artpop--her message--could be anything, as she says in the album. I don't think people realize this. Her songs are still just as catchy as they were in "The Fame." Gaga has a pure gift for melody, and especially hooks, both melodic and lyrical.
I'm not a very big fan of pop at all. Too many artists doing too much of the same thing and too many of the same sounding songs. When I listen to a Gaga song, I always know it's her. You can just tell how involved she is in her music, and how passionate she is about it, and each and every song shines with her personality. Gaga is a luminary. Her music inspires people to truly be themselves, and this album is absolutely vital in that. While it may seem like a downgrade from the complexities of Born this Way, it's not. Myself, I didn't like Aura at first glance. But I listened to it more and more and I started to like it. Now, it's one of my favorites songs on the album.

See, what I'm trying to say is: you shouldn't listen to the album just one time and say that it is lame. You need to give it some time, listen to it, and THEN judge it. Everytime I did this, I caught myself listening to the thing I said I would never listen to.

Now, some are saying that the album has no meaning. What? Did you search for that meaning? EVERYTHING that Gaga does (and I'm saying EVERYTHING), has a meaning. It may take some time for you to see, but you will. Just give it some time.

Some of my favorite songs (not in order): Donatella, Aura, Gypsy, DOPE, G.U.Y, Do What You Want and Jewels N' Drugs.

One of the best albums released this year.ARTPOP, som many people wondering where's the "ART", but they're taking it too literal, this album is a journey, it takes you from wanting to party, to cuddle, to cry, and more. Gaga brings her A game in 11 of those songs, if this album went through some sort of selection, they would have left songs like "jewels 'n' drugs" "mary jane holland" "venus" and the moment breaker "dope", Gaga is still the lyricist genius we met in 2008 with her debut, but she seriously needs to work this out, even though the 11 songs she masters are some of the best tracks she has everGaga brings her A game in 11 of those songs, if this album went through some sort of selection, they would have left songs like "jewels 'n' drugs" "mary jane holland" "venus" and the moment breaker "dope", Gaga is still the lyricist genius we met in 2008 with her debut, but she seriously needs to work this out, even though the 11 songs she masters are some of the best tracks she has ever release like "do what u want" "g.u.y." The melodies here are fine, they do a job, but nothing backs up Gag's Warholian rhetoric or scales the barmy heights of Bad Romance. [Jan 2014, p.116]

While it’s stronger than the messy ‘Born This Way’, Artpop feels little more culture-quaking than a good collection of fun, silly, well-crafted pop songs.

This is two albums in a row now that were basically a bit boring, and she needs to sort it out soonish please.
