The best of the film apart from the characters and the animation is scripted comedy and it has. And when I refer to comedy I mean a lot of comedy. It has until ironic jokes and teasing some references or Disney. The script is the best script I might have seen in a Disney movie. It has so many new things I have not seen before. For example, there is a character of a fox named Gideon Grey who was the bully in childhood of Judy, and currently is selling cakes and apologizes of Judy for his past actions. That's something I've never seen before. The production design is incredible and the city is very creative. The only problem I have with the film is the villain. Not reveal anything to avoid saying a spoiler, just say it was something weak in a film and on the last third of the film. The rest is not to say, I was so happy to see that he never felt predictable. Zootopia is a film that the family can enjoy. It's pretty creative and funny to leave you speechless Expand

This is a masterpiece of its time and an INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR KIDS! While the backbone of the film is a typical, entertaining detective story, its meat is just tons of well delivered pokes on modern society and its most annoying features, particularly real contradictions between minority inclusion ideas that are permeated with prejudice in real world practice (even by those who on paper call themselves progressive and open-minded). This is an extremely well crafted collection of jokes that go deep into our moral wounds! And most importantly, it does not fall into an OVER-SIMPLIFIED IDEALISTIC LIBERAL CLICHE! No, this is much smarter and more complicated than that! And here is an illustration of that (SPOILER AHEAD): at a key stage of the narrative, the predators (who are in fact a minority in terms of population) of this great place called Zootopia (where predator and prey historically learned to coexist) become the targets of prejudice and discrimination by the prey population. First, think... well it seems that predators would tend to be the oppressors and the prey would be the victim, right? Well, but even if that is so (or has been so in the universe of Zootopia generations before the events of the movie), just like we see it in our own world now, there are shades of grey in the definition of who oppresses and who is the victim... Watch it, think about it, and talk about it! Expand

Zootopia's brilliant animation, likeable characters and timely message are barely enough to get past scattershot gags and a plot that's generic, clichéd and predictable.

This was really a neat little, adult animation movie. Adult in context, not in theme or suggestiveness. Idris Elba was great as the Chief of Police water buffalo. The CGI was fantastic for the different environments. This animation was at the same level as Disney's 2016 rendition of "Jungle Book". Good story, good plot and it kept one interested all the way through. Expand

Walt Disney Animation Studios is at it once again, proving that this decade is theirs when it comes to animation. After seeing them rise with; 'Tangled' (2010), 'Wreck-It Ralph' (2012), 'Frozen' (2013) and even 'Big Hero 6' (2014)... they hit it again with what is arguably their most intelligent and insightful film, 'Zootopia'.

The world of "Zootopia" focuses on an enthusiastic and hard-working bunny named Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) who dreams of becoming a cop, but because of the fact that she is a small bunny in a huge city of "Zootopia", nobody seems to think that she can make it. She is often ridiculed by Chief Bogo (voiced by Idris Elba), a cynical, impatient and at times, short-fused Buffalo who keeps sending Judy in charge of parking duty and nothing more for her to expand on her skills to catch criminals.

She meets a very sly and cunning fox named Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) who she catches getting up to some dodgy things, and she needs his help to catch some criminal responsible for making some of the predators in Zootopia from going "savage" and becoming dangerous.

This is one of Disney's most thoughtful movies as it does focus on the subject of discrimination, and is great to teach its young audience to not hate against those who are different through no fault of their own. However, I do feel as if young children will not get the subject quite as well as adults, children may not be able to understand what the movie is trying to tell metaphorically, while to us adults, the message is pretty crystal clear... Children will have more of a fun time watching characters like Judy and Nick throughout their journey, but nothing else may appeal to them quite as well.

Directors Byron Howard ('Tangled') and Rich Moore ('Wreck-It Ralph'), who also co-wrote the screenplay along with Jared Bush and Jennifer Lee ('Frozen') are a fantastic team to bring together this incredible story that could rank as Disney's best... even if children don't quite get it yet. There is more education placed before fun here, but if your kids are patient enough, they'll have the time of their lives.

There is also some voice work from Shakira as Gazelle, with a song called "Try Everything"... I didn't see the significance in having Shakira in this movie as her character doesn't appear very often, and has little impact on the story, but for the most part... this movie is one of the best Disney has ever done.

Deutsche Review – Kritik

Charaktere:

Super gemacht Disney.

Bildbearbeitung:

Die Darstellung ist atemberaubend. Man sieht überall kleine Details.

84/100

K. Simmons, Octavia Spencer, Alan Tudyk, and Shakira.
Zootopia is a place where all animals, prey and predator live in peace and harmony. A rabbit named Judy Hops dreams of becoming the first rabbit cop ever and on her journey to her dream she runs into a fox, named Nick Wilde. Together they will try to solve a mystery about some missing predator civilians on the city of Zootopia.
I personally loved this film and its message with all my heart. I was in tears by the end of the film just because of how beautiful/creative and well done the message about living in peace and together even though we may be different in race and/or other things (e.g. religion, gender etc). The animation is incredible to look at, this movie is an undeniable visual treat every second of it. It is also very funny and references a lot of other famous movies and TV Shows (Breaking Bad). Kids will have a good time marveling at the beautiful animation and the really likable characters, but I feel like adults will be the ones to enjoy this movie the most. The message that comes across is timeless and very much necessary at this point and time.
All the voice work is amazing, Ginnifer Goodwin does a fantastic job on the lead role and Jason Bateman delivered that slick fun tone throughout his likable character. The music is composed by the talented Michael Giacchino, who has been very busy recently composing pretty much every amazing soundtrack on a lot of successful movies. He also does a very good job here, with his composition that delivers what is required on certain scenes.
This is one fast paced, interesting, funny and feel good animated film that Disney seems to have become masters at making recently. I did not find anything wrong with it all throughout the film, and it is definitely one of my favorite films of 2016 so far.

Zootopia is an amazing movie. It works perfectly as a children's film while projecting mature themes that are very relevant on today's society.

The amount of detail that's been given to this world is unbelievable and the characters are very well realised. The story is heartfelt and smart, and humour is spread throughout the whole thing. If I had to pick some negatives I'd say that the way the villain is revealed felt very rushed and the song by Shakira is awful.

This movie is a must see, probably the best modern Disney effort.

All of the hype for 2016 was for Moana and Pixar's Finding Dory. However, the trailers looked promising and Disney is known for talking animal movies; from the decently good Robin Hood to the rather poor Chicken Little. Then the first critic reviews came in, saying this was a masterpiece and the best Disney film since The Lion King. So I went into the theater with high hopes and wasn't disappointed at all. In fact, Zootopia is the best Disney animated film in 20+ years and stands tall with the greatest of great Disney classics. Why is this? The story, animation, and characters rock!

Starting with the animation, it is extremely detailed and simply beautiful. The city is a mix of old and new structures and through clever ways, is able to accommodate mammals from the smallest mouse to the tallest giraffe. All the animal characters are expertly designed and are lovable to the point where you wish you could hug their fur. Unlike other anthropomorphic animal movies where the animals were basically humans with fur on top, the animals here are a perfect blend with both human and natural characteristics. Like humans, these characters wear cloths (except shoes), walk upright, and live very human lives. Like real animals, these mammals are their respective sizes, live in their respective climates, and keep some of their natural looks/ characteristics. Both of the main characters; Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde; are quite memorable, imperfect, and complex. Even the side characters, such as Police Chief Bogo, Officer Clawhauser, and Flash all play an important part to the story and are lovable themselves.

Speaking of the story; that was the most shocking part of the film. What starts out as a simple buddy cop detective story turns into a complex, Pixar- esque commentary on stereotyping, race relations, fear mongering, the media, drugs, social privilege, point of view, relationships, and bigotry. Like modern day America, this society has cultural issues that are kept under the rug until exposed. When exposed, all hell breaks loose and the city must learn how to come together and resolve their species (racial) issues. This message isn't new, but the fact that Disney took it on in full force shows the risk they took. The story and theme are presented in a non- preachy manner, stays neutral, and is rather realistic. Instead of the message being "stop stereotyping now", it is "let's acknowledge there is problem and work towards a solution". It is very realistic to the way we think and doesn't present a clear solution, leaving that to the audience to think for themselves. Not to mention the excellent comedy that's woven in to keep the tone perfectly balanced between its laugh- out- loud moments and more serious themes. It is simply inspiring.

Sadly Zootopia, like its titular city, isn't a perfect movie. The pacing is uneven in areas as the jokes go by too quickly and the more dramatic moments too slowly. Do to some pop culture elements, it isn't as timeless as other Disney/ Pixar movies. In addition, the anti- stereotyping message is a little muddled as some of the animal stereotypes are true. (sloths are slow, etc.) Overall, the 55th Disney animated film in 79 years is a near- masterpiece with an uplifting important story about prejudice, lovable characters, and top- notch animation.

A surprisingly deep movie dealing with some rather delicate issues. Surprising to see in this kind of movie.

Animation is beautiful, however I did feel that the scene rushed by so quickly that allot of the details were easily overlooked (kind of like a hyperactive child running around a toy store.) If a sequel is made, they should let the scenes linger a bit. But still, it was great.

The main characters are very likable and well developed. Side characters are good, but not given enough relevance to be more than plot device or passing jokes.

Story is a bit predictable and has been done countless times before. Still, it was presented well and enjoyable.

Overall:
Zootopia/Zootropolis (no idea why it was renamed in other territories) is a charming movie whose only real innovation was the anthropomorphised world. Little else new. Regardless, it was fun to watch and tackled some deep issues giving the movie some heart.

For kids the message is about never giving up on your dreams and not letting others bring you down. For adults it's a powerful allegory for the evils of racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination.

It's a really deep film. However, pushing past it's compelling themes it's also a very funny and charming movie. The animation is stunning and the voice cast is excellent. Presentation wise it knocks everything out of the park. It's also very sharp with it's writing as well. It's humor is on point and very clever. It's able to bring jokes any kid could laugh at and even squeeze in some more mature ones for the older audiences in ways the younglings won't pick up on.

The plot does hit some very familiar beats with it's story about a rookie cop with something to prove out to solve a tough case. There are twists here we've seen time and time again over the years. The sense of humor, heart, deep subject matter, and imaginative world do allow the movie to overcome it's plot familiarity. However the issue is still noticeable.

It ends up being very minor though. In the face of everything Zootopia does right, this stumble feels practically miniscule. It's another Disney movie with plenty to offer the entire family. It's a sweet, touching, and very mature tale that's most importantly funny. It's an all around success and a movie I have no trouble highly recommending to any and everybody.

Maybe I got hyped too much before seeing it but to me it was a real deception. It was a rehash without much soul. The "IT'S GONNA GO FAST... or not" and the "We are so sneaky I'm making up signs you don't understand" jokes are getting old.

It didn't feel magic like a Disney movie should and it's not nostalgia speaking, there's some great recent animated movies out there (from Disney/Pixar and others).

With Zootopia, I was seeing the writing and it broke the immersion. You can't really reinvent the basic story plan but the viewers shouldn't see that on screen. Like "Cue the emotional moment!" and such. It felt rushed. Which is sad because the intention and the basic idea behind the movie were good.

The characters were okay but simple. The strongest point of the movie is the animation for Mrs. Otterton. They made her believable and the emotions felt real.

If you want a no-brainer family movie it does the job, but to the fans of animation: don't expect too much.

So, I've finally watched Zootopia.
I can understand where the hype is coming from, but the final praise is baffling to me. It's Frozen 2, really. A summer shovelware marketed well.

Characters are likeable, the visuals are neat, but the plot is really bland, uninspired and lacks an ultimate message, like all Disney's classics do. It's just a simple buddy story with some cringe-inducing multicultural vibes, where even the main theme is absurdly miscasted and contradicts our main protagonist, which in fact DOESN'T want to do or experience everything and is stubborn to the very end to achieve one and the only goal in her life, blind to everyone else. In fact, it's so bland it couldn't normally be made into a full-timed movie, so the screenwriters helped themselves shoveling as much pop references as they could. Almost an every single scene is a reference to something I got sick of it after 30 minutes and seriously thought of walking out at the God-awful Godfather scene. It's not a Zootopia it's Pop-Reference: A Furry Motion Picture. Well, gotta fill the screen time with something. The plot pacing is slow, filled with pop-reference filled filler scenes, that I was constantly bored throughout the entire movie. Yeah, I had few laughs here and there, it's a pretty funny and clever with jokes (we're good at multiplying), but not always (a fur of a skunk joke). Ultimately, I was wasted at the end of the movie. Instead of thinking "holy cow, that was awesome", I thought "Christ, finally it's over".
Overall, really disappointing. A typical Disney shovelware.

Try everything (but differently). So Disney has done it again.

This beautiful animation came to exist because of coming together of the directors of 'Tangled' and 'Wreck-it-Ralp'. It is Disney who had once again done it, since their rival Pixer is going down in a rapid speed. As a Disney fan since my childhood, I'm very happy for their success in live-shot films and animations, especially for this one.

Okay, since the revolution of 3D animation over 20 years ago after overthrowing the 2D animation, most of the big productions like Disney, Pixer and Dreamworks with few others never failed to deliver. Believe me, I was not interested in this film when I first saw the teaser and trailer. But they have done great promotions and so the film did awesomely at screens worldwide. I was totally blown away after seeing it, Disney's another unique universal charactered story. From the little children to the grown ups, everybody definitely going to enjoy it.

All kinds of animals coming together happens only in cinemas, and that too mostly in animations. But todays kids are very sharp who ask lots of questions, so they had a fine explanation for the doubts regarding putting animals in a same society. It was like the United States, where everyone came from different continents and represents different race. And so in this film every animal came from different land to live together peacefully in a city called Zootopia.

So the story begins when Judy the rabbit follows her dream to become a police officer in Zootopia. There she meets Nick the fox, who are actually arch-rival species in the wild, but it was thousands of years ago before adapting the civilisation. So trust is what not promised between them, but they're forced to work together after a small missing person case becomes their prime agenda. Solving the mystery is what brings the end to this wonderful tale.

These days animations are not just concentrated on comedies, trying to get us emotionally as well. Maybe that's how they're grabbing the adult audience, especially the families. Shakira's cameo was the highlight, and her song 'Try Everything' helped the get attention from all the corners.

The Oscars was concluded just a couple of months ago, but it already feels like the fever is gripping again for the next edition and looks like this film is leading the way for the animation category. I know it's too early, but I hope it wins it. And finally a request for the Disney, bring it on a sequel as soon as possible.

There were plenty of funny scenes and characters and I found myself surprisingly entertained despite rolling my eyes at some of the messages that were not necessary nor representative of reality. But if you ignore the juvenile politics, there is some funny writing in here as the story revolved around a stary-eyed bunny cop who wants to make the world better but ends up making things worse due to not being as smart as she thinks she is. Luckily she encounters a wise Fox who had lost hope in society but found it again through his bunny counterpart. The go around town interacting with other animals to solve a crime and get into trouble along the way and it was fun to watch since the movie does not take itself very seriously. A good move over all. Expand

This movie was quite good, and I would recommend it if you enjoy animation

Pros
- Excellent design and animation
- Great world building and imagination, as well as the layout and composition of the shots
-Touched some important themes that need to be talked about today

Cons
- Very predictable, and follows a very standard formula, risking nothing and doing nothing particularly original or unique
-Emphasis of the soundtrack in certain scenes takes you out of the movie rather than helping immersion
-The audio mixing sounds exactly the same wherever they are, with little variation with the volume of the characters voices depending on the scenery, I know this does not matter to most people, but Fantastic Mr Fox had a lower budget than this movie and still remembered to do it, so Zootopia has no excuse
- No foreshadowing of the twist, I watched this movie twice in theaters and the second time I made sure to read all the background notes and keep subtext in mind, but there was nothing, as a result the twist feels rather thrown in

The idea that predators are bad and they somehow have a deeper more animal character behind them. It raises the question of, if they're predators, what do they eat? And how come nobody knows about the animal like behavior? even though it's recorded in history. Does this mean that predators evolved much later than herbivores? and also why would they sell mammal rugs? They just skin other animals and sell them as decorations?

Overall though the characters are likable and enjoyable. The struggles they have to deal with make the audience relate with them in some way, the animation is solid and the variety in the environment is breathtaking. It's just a shame they didn't put a lot of time into the film and it just seemed rushed.

On a side note, the original plot seemed much better.

Instead,Zootopia is the best Pixar film that Pixar never made. While the film could’ve easily been enjoyable just on the charm of animals and gags alone they didn’t do that. even the heartwarming investigation story in the first act is fine. Instead, the film opted to use it to speak to harsh and cruel reality that never lets up and neither does the film. Piling cruelness upon the hero to a point that most films would stop. It’s this willingness to be honest and harsh that makes this film go above and beyond a kind of distance that I haven’t seen form an animated film since Toy Story 3. Any gripes about the film’s conflict resolving too quickly or having too many reveals are issues that could easily be resolved with repeat viewings and knowing what’s happening. With Zootopia Disney have once-again surpassed themselves in the non-fairy tale CGI films. With the track record continuing to be great as Disney’s films continue to improve and evolve the biggest concern is whether the next film will be as great as the last one. Disney’s biggest competition this year is themselves with Moana a musical the question now becomes can it be as great and timeless and classical. This could be the year where Disney has two classics. I hope so because if its any indication Disney is still on top and has done it again and I am no longer looking forward to Finding Dory. Expand

A fun, entertaining film kids, teens, and adults will not only enjoy, but understand and relate to. One of Disney's best - if not THE best - animated films.

Zootopia has great animation, an interesting world and clever thinking until he becomes a preachy, pandering film that destroys all the good things about it. The movie doesn't gel when you mix children comedy with politically correct issues.

I didn't know whether I was going to come out of the theater with a smile or a frown on my face. Zootopia was a great film! It's plot is very creative and unique that I was so fascinated by it's atmosphere; a New York City transformation into a more animal-like environment. In addition, the protagonist, Judy Hopps' conflicts that she struggles with are very emotional and deep. This creates a more intense experience for a animated film that only possesses a "PG" by the MPAA.

I think Zootopia is up for an Oscar nomination for "best animated film," or maybe something better! This is definately one of the years best films so far.

Far better than I expected it to be. Delightful visual design, great characters that are brought to life by top notch voice acting and a well written story that is not only original but also very creative. Strongly recommended.

Zootopia offers us an important and thoughtful message in a rich and timely film, presenting a more tone "serious" and the same, with the ability to entertain viewers of all ages.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had heard of all of the critical praise that this film was getting so I decided to check it out for myself not too long ago. When I walked out of the theater though, I felt that the praise was unwarranted. As time went on though, I reexamined my thoughts and came to the conclusion that even though it is not groundbreaking masterpiece as some critics say it is, I still think it is a good film in it's own right despite a few missteps. The most admirable thing about this film is the social commentary in regards to the modern issue of racism. At first I thought that it wasn't touched up on enough but I realized that it was purposeful to show how subtle racism is nowadays. The social commentary was obvious but it didn't feel overbearing like how a lot of lesser films who tackle this same subject manner handle it. The world also has impressive attention to detail about how the animals move and what the daily life in the city is like. Each district such as the tundra district and the rain-forest district give some pretty impressive visuals in their design. The plot does follow some predictable trends though like the misunderstanding trope and the buddy cop and the heroes falling out. The characters with a few notable exceptions don't really evolve out of their character archetypes but they are still likeable and are developed enough to have the audience root for them. One of the biggest stumbling blocks though was the surprise villain who was revealed to be the sheep secretary. I understand the purpose of this twist in order to critique the notion of extremism and those who wish to fight "race- traitors". However I felt this twist didn't work since it felt out of left field and it wasn't built up earlier in the narrative. This concept worked in "Frozen" because it told children about the dangers of being too trusting and there were some subtle clues about Han's true intentions. Despite falling into cliches and having a very predictable plot, "Zootopia" will keep you intrigued and will entertain your children if you are looking for a fun and sometimes thought-provoking family friendly experience. Some people are making this out to be the next coming of Jesus. And maybe for the furry fandom, it is. But even as a furry, myself, I was not like, super amazed by this movie.

As a viewing experience, this was pretty enjoyable. The visuals are good, the characters are likable, there's actually a bit of depth to a few of the characters, and on the whole it is fun. The movie does a good job of setting up some ideas and plot pieces and then setting them into place later on, and the interplay between the protagonists is enjoyable to watch.

That said, this is a good movie. It isn't perfect - there's some plot holes in it which kind of ruin the mystery, and while the movie does a decent job with some Chekov's Guns and does try to subvert things in the second half of the movie, it also suffers from playing its own premise too straight. The movie, after all, is about racism and stereotypes, and yet the movie simultaneously has to establish them AND undermine them at the same time. As a result, it ends up feeling a little bit muddled in its delivery of its moral at times, even though it is pretty clear from the context of the movie that the protagonists are not the only people who have learned this lesson in this world.

All in all, I can recommend this movie; I think most folks will enjoy it, especially if they're Disney fans. It is probably the best Disney movie since The Princess and the Frog, and was certainly an enjoyable thing to sit down and watch.

Times in theaters was that the movie wasn't just trying to be a family movie but a family movie that children and adults could enjoy all round, while trying to make a impact on you with displaying some modern issues with the modern world, and after the research i found just how hard it was to make and create a story out of ideas the people at Disney who worked so hard to create a master piece with actual characters i could care about, a story which is thrilling to watch, and a expanisve world that feels like you could immerse yourself in imagining the possibilities, and has some much potential for more, compared to another world like for example Frozen: Once the story was over and you start to think about it there not very much left in the world that they could 'go' from, While Zootopia on the other hand has so much left in the world where, heck they could literally make a TV series, or possibly another movie, (which fans of the movie would Love), and the possibilities of the World of Zootopia just continues, if the main protagonist get boring (Nick And Judy, which i highly doubt, just go look at he fan-fic archive that place is booming) then they could switch the protagonist , So the possibilities are just endless, so in the end, I loved the movie, so much i decided to take 35-40 minutes of my life (slow type even though i'm on he computer like 5 times week for like three-five hours, weird) that I'll never get back to write a review just to rate, show how i care about the movie, and further more just recommend, if you haven't seen this, I ask you to go and watch this, and if you don't just leave midway of the movie, word of advice, if you leave during the movie but not near the end most theaters will give you your money back or a free movie pass, how i know....*Cough, Dawn Of Justice. But i highly doubt you will dislike this movie and if you did watch this, well...Go watch it again. Plus I ship them *whispers if you know what i mean, even the Directors and actors are in it ;D Expand

Like a lot of its ilk, the set up dazzles more than the conclusion, but at least it eschews treacly sentiment.
Kids will be happy with the cornucopia of animal characters and fast paced action, whilst adults will relish the ‘in’ jokes, movie references and amazing invention on display. The train ride to, and through, Zootropolis needs to be seen a few times to fully appreciate the sheer beauty and imagination of the place. The animated work here is sublime.
If ever a film had a signpost invisibly displayed for a sequel then this is it. With its various kingdoms and variety of animals already set up, there is ample room left for an in exhaustive amount of story possibilities. One just hopes that they will all end up being as good as this one which, whilst holding its own with the animated best, is more importantly an estimable film in its own right.

Definitely a top contender for the next Oscars for best animated film.

Disney has created an animated film which will be in the top 10 animated features of our generation.

The film is creative packed with plenty of action and humour with actual laugh-out-loud moments, even included a sequence paying homage to The Godfather (which was just brilliant).

This ranks in my top 10 of animated films ever created, and surely to please anyone who is a fan of fun and creative animated films.

Toy Story comes close but unlike Toy Story Zootopia has enough story development to truly be made for adults. However, at the same time your kids will love the look of the city and the idea of animals walking and talking like humans. We took our 5 year old son and 3 year old daughter. Outside of the fact the kids really like the main song my wife and I talk about the movie more than they do. And we saw it opening day. Expand
