Thus when I review this, I assume it has relations to previous X-Men titles and since that was the reason I went to see this film, the movie fails. Now the question is how do I rate it? Do I rate it as a stand alone movie? Do I rate it as a horrible sequel the previous X-Men films? If someone wanted to write a movie like this, why couldn't they create a new franchise? Why did they need to milk the X-Men name for a few more viewers and take a chance at destroying the franchise (this is one of two reasons why comics died in the 90s)? There was no loyalty to the fans and the companies made it obvious that all they wanted was money when the fans wanted continuity and a good story. This is dishonest in my opinion so I am going to review it as an X-Men film.

The effects were good but honestly this is the 21st century and those effects really dont pop out any more. I didnt see anything new so no bonus points for innovation.

As an X-Men film following the X-Men continuity of previous films, there are too many plot holes in the story. I wont go into every detail because the list is much too long but here is quick summary.

1 - Xavier is alive. Even if we assumed he jumped bodies, why is he still in a wheelchair? Stupid stupid stupid writing.
2 - Quicksilver could have accomplished the entire plot goal on his own... but he was not brought along for the ride. They just sent him home to watch tv while the world was on the brink of collapse.
3 - Stryker is not the same person from older movies yet logan remembers him as the guy from the old movie. Note that in both movies, the time is 70's. In the old movie, he was 40s-50s. In this movie he is in his 20s. What?
4 - Wolvie got adamantium claws in the future... but he lost them in the Wolverine movie.

If you love xmen. See it. If you love good story... Don't expect much.
Great effects and great acting from young Xavier and magneto. Lots of goodness blended with let downs.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Terrible jumbled mess of a film that walks all over itself and then again.

Not so much a Xmen film, then it is to showcase a 1970s Jennifer Lawerence.
Lawerence is the the ONE that can save us or damn us. The trouble is, Lawerance is so gullible that all you need are mini speeches tor turn her bad or good.

Mystique can now also change her physical size and become as small as a Lanister. YET.. she gets shot in the leg, and limps around half the movie. Doesn't she heal fast as well?

How many times will Magneto just throw things? Is that all he can do? I thought his power was magnetism. Magneto vs Melneto? "Quick give me your car keys, I must defeat the bad guys"

Xavier has a serum that 'cures' a bullet to the spine but it also takes away his powers? Whaaaa? I mean honestly.. They could have easily said the bullet didn't cripple him, only to have him crippled later in the final film, which would have been the "ripple in the pond" bit..

Quicksilver by far the strongest Mutant in the film. After the great Metal man robbery, they just send him home. Don't you think he would be a huge asset to the cause?

They could have used the fact he was a rebellious kid, plus they drop the hint he was Magnetos kid to create a powerful story arch. Maybe quicksilver comes out of no where to rescue is father instead of Xavier letting him go.

The sentinels in 1970s are made of space age advanced technology. The 1970 space age sentinels are in the film for exactly 5 minutes, and do jack.

How come they extract and bond Mystique powers on the future sentinels but no other? Seems if you can take the DNA of one dead mutant and extract it, surly you can do it for any mutant

Wolverine is the biggest joke, he does jack **** in the entire film. I say again, does absolutely nothing. At the end of the film, Magneto tosses his ass in a big river left to die. Then when its all over, Xavier just leaves him there. Knowing FULL WELL all the acts of horror that will be committed on Wolverine.. Except Wolverine volunteered for it.
Wolverine is also nude at one point, so the 90% male audience who like comic book movies will appreciate that.

The final future fight scene is almost exactly like the first one. Boring!!
Kitty can do time travel now.
Also Kitty suffers a mega gushing blood wound, yet.. the ice man or the fire guy can't close the wound up? There was no medkit on the Xplane?

I digress.. I could on and on and on.. How hard is it to stick to a a great comic book story? Why do they insist on reinventing the wheel...

One problem is that there are too many X-Men for any of them to receive anything but the most simplified broad brush backstory, so none of them feel like real people, so you don't really care that much what happens to them. One highlight is that the guy playing the role of Nixon was great, almost uncanny. Mystiques's makeup is not as good in the original X-Men. It looks much less natural and fake; the filmmakers also seem too shy to show Mystique for more than a split second at a time. Also, now that we know there is a method for going back in time whenever it is convenient, all future drama (if there are more movies) is wiped out, because if someone dies, if anything else goes wrong, they can just send Wolverine back in time to fix it. Overall, a mildly disappointing entry. Expand

Upon arriving in the 70s - 'cos everything in Hollywood has to flashback to the 70s: no other decade exists! - he promptly sets off on a jaunt to persuade Prof X and Magneto to play happy families and stop the ebul future that he is living through in which mutants are nearly extinct.
Now, Prof X, having sunk into despair 'cos reasons, has started taking a drug made by Beast that was developed to suppress the X-gene, and in consuming said, he not only loses his powers but also regains the use of his legs - magical stuff this, that can repair a severed spinal column due to...errr...DNA! Yeah...
Anyway, he buys Logan's story, with next to no proof, and heads off across America to break Irish Magneto out of a secret, concrete prison below the Pentagon with nothing more than his awesome sideburns and a kid who can move fast (cue: worst reveal of illegitimate child EVER), providing, at least, the only fun point of this film (slo-mo kitchen fight).
So, with the band all back together, off they jog once more to stop Mystique from killing a bad man, thus undoing a chain of events that will lead to her DNA being used to destroy all of Mutantkind. Of course, Irish Magneto being the raging bloody idiot he is, has to sabotage every plan they come up with by randomly trying to murder first Mystique, then just about anyone else he does not like the look of.
Of course, it all resolves at the last possible moment, just as the mutants from the future are set to be wiped away for good, with every important character already having being brutally murdered at least once, leaving us with what is quite possibly the biggest retcon in the history of cinema, with the director bringing back everyone who ever died and especially focusing on undoing all of X-Men 3. There there, Bryan Singer; you can dry your eyes now. All the mean and nasty stuff that someone else did to your work (ie the first two utterly rubbish films) is all forgotten now, and you can now move forward bravely, preparing to milk this franchise dry with your banal plots, tedious character work and immature humour.
I know that XMen, at least from the point of view of the comics, is a total train-wreck, having retconned its whole universe on multiple occasions, but I just expect better of movies - or at least I used to. Clearly this is what everyone else wants from this medium, so it, along with gaming, are simply not for me any more.

There are some pretty bad cinematography in this film, akin to low budget thai horror movie - you will know which scene i am refering to if you watch this film.

Magneto is a schizophrenic in this film, making major decisions snappishly on a whim: deciding to avert the disastrous future by preventing a murder at one moment and then deciding to kill that same intended victim plus the president (which would no doubt leads to disaster) in the next moment.

Schizophrenic characters are hallmarks of a bad story.

After The Winter Solder I was really looking forward to this movie, but it really didn't deliver for me. For an action movie it was lacking a lot of action and the story didn't really hold my attention. I've seen a LOT of superhero films and I think the genre is getting stale, The Winter Solder was brilliant but this is just another superhero film that doesn't add anything to the tired genre. Edge of Tomorrow is a MUCH better film, I would recommend that ahead of this. Expand

Was he forced to act at gunpoint or what? He was lifeless.... the setpieces at times awesome, mostly involves the killing of some random mutant that we dont care about so there is that, next is the boring pace, the only redeeming thing is quicksilver and hes not around for long, what a shame... boring at times, bad acting, inconsistency, not as epic as avengers or man of steel and definitely not a thoughtful as captain america, it was really a let down for me despite the well intentioned fan service (Wolverine v Magneto) Hope this franchise returns to Marvel for theaters... This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is great but there are a lot of problems with it. The story, cast and characters are all solid and the action sequences are really cool to watch. It grabs your attention from the moment it starts and keeps pulling you in as the plot progresses while at the same time developing and adding layers to characters we already know and giving intriguing introductions to some new ones for the next film. It looks great, it's acted brilliantly and is well directed. So why am I only giving it a 6? Four reasons:
Too much throwing in random characters for no reason other than to say they were there (Why was Havok even in this film?)
No explanation as to how Wolverine got his adamantium claws back (The previous film was The Wolverine where he lost them and went back to bone claws but now somehow they're adamantium again.)
No explanation as to how Shadowcat can send people back in time (Seriously, how does she do that? Her power is walking through walls, when and how to did she obtain time travel powers?)
No explanation as to how future Xavier is even alive after being vaporized in The Last Stand (Look, Singer, if you wanna forget The Last Stand I understand that, we all do. But you can't acknowledge some parts as canon and ignore others. It's all or nothing.)
So yeah there are holes in this film. That said, it's still a good time and has definitely got me looking forward to Apocalypse. It is a really enjoyable super hero movie but just bear in mind there are some things you'll have to be forgiving about.

At one point, sometime after the atrocious Carl’s Jr. commercials, I assumed it would be somewhere around Spider-Man 3. There were a lot of reasons I felt so strongly about it, mainly that I feel the old cast should have been liquidated and re-casted. The trailers all made the movie appear to be unwatchable, but I was pleasantly surprised.

While I still stand strong about the old cast being bad, they didn’t take over this movie at all. Another huge complaint I had going into it was how unbelievably stupid Evan Peter’s Quicksilver looked. If the crappy GRAY hair and poorly dyed eyebrows weren’t enough to upset the awful costume made my stomach churn. With that said I feel the 15-20 minutes Quicksilver is on screen is some of the best moments of DoFP. Evan Peter’s was hilarious and his acting was on point, he truly held his own next to Fassbender and McAvoy, who were amazing as always. The acting I was most disappointed with had to be Jennifer Lawrence. She felt flat and lifeless from start to finish and it may be one of her worse roles to date.

Another fatal flaw of the movie was the mistreatment of certain mutant characters! As always they worked hard to make Wolverine shine, while other important characters get shoved into the background. One point in the movie they discuss all the mutants that died between First Class and Days of Futures Past, but never once showed a flashback or memorial of these characters who are crucial to the universe. They also introduced some characters without discussing their importance or strength, I’m talking about Bishop here, and I hardly understand why they bothered at all!

With all that said Days of Futures Past was a complete fan service for comic book readers. Lots of Easter eggs and nerdy nods had me sitting on the edge of my seat biting my nails with joy! The after credit sequence induced high-pitched squeals even. X-Men: Days of Futures Past was better than I was expecting, I don’t think it’s the amazing movie everybody keeps saying it is. There were problems that were hard to overlook, but in all a fun and enjoyable movie. ShaunaOH gives X-Men: Days of Futures Past a 6.7/10!!

The cast did a great job though, Although that isn't surprising considering how stacked it was.

While Days of Future Past is far from perfect, It's an OK sequel. First Class was far superior though and I wish they had just developed that storyline before throwing it all away for a mash-up in this one.
