There are some 'odd' tonal shifts during the first half of the film, but these shifts in tone are almost certainly intentional and actually mesh well with the over all plot. The last twenty minutes of the film were also a tad 'slow' - for lack of a better word - up until the very climactic and enjoyable ending. If you want to watch a simple, entertaining and interesting indie horror movie, then I would definitely recommend watching X. Expand

Aborda um pouco de vários temas não se deixando ser apenas mais um filme de terror slasher. Simples mas muito bem executado e cheio de homenagens ao gênero.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Not only is this movie a highly entertaining horror film on its own right, but it's also a love letter to all kinds of classic cinema, from the horror genre to the French New Wave to the Golden Age of Porn.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre influence is obvious (this film is a better TCM movie than the one we got earlier this year), but the film is also full of nods to movies like Friday the 13th, Psycho and even Easy Rider with some of the editing.

The movie is darkly funny to the point where I actually laughed out loud at certain moments, and the characters were all surprisingly pretty fun and engaging. The main elderly couple is surprisingly well developed and there are times where you even feel a little sad for them, even if you don't believe for a second that they are actually old.

It's not really all that scary, it's simply a lot of fun with entertaining characters and good villains. Add to that fantastic editing and directing and you got yourself a certified top-tier throwback slasher.

I went in expecting something amazing. The reviews really mislead me. It was good, don’t get me wrong. But don’t listen to the rotten tomatoes score.
The first half of the movie is just setup, introducing the characters and story. But it’s not that complicated of a story and the characters weren’t interesting enough to require that much set up. Then when the horror finally starts, it’s not very scary, just jump scares and gore. The kills aren’t interesting or creative as well, and lack any sort of weight to them. It’s just “oh he’s dead, now he’s dead, now she’s dead” one after another. Most of the characters aren’t even scared when they die, they don’t even realize what’s happening. I also found it super dull that the main bad guys were just regular people, old people at that! How did two 80 year old geezers manage to kill this many people, it’s a pretty lame choice.
I did really enjoy the atmosphere and cinematography. It felt like a movie that might have actually been released in the 70s. The acting was pretty good too, I especially liked Kid Cudi. His performance has me excited to see him in other projects and I even went to check out some of his music. I was somewhat entertained all throughout, so I’d say it’s not a waste of time. If you like classic era slashers, movies set in the 70s, or slow burn thrillers, you’d probably enjoy your time with this one.

A talented cast and a slightly-above-average story make it a pleasant viewing experience. Stylistically superior to many modern-day slasher movies, I believe that's where it sets itself apart from the rest of the pack. However, don't go in expecting anything groundbreaking and unique. Ti West does what he does pretty well, and it makes for one of the better slasher/horror movies of the past few years. Expand

Anyone who has seen a Ti West film knows that what they lack in ambition and narrative complexity, they make up for with a style that many horror directors wish they had.

Netflix's lousy new Texas Chainsaw Massacre would have begged for just a piece of the atmosphere achieved in this film.

"X" as West himself has put it, is a tribute to the pornographic genre and of course to horror. Obviously for many things this is just a horror more than anything else, but the soul of this story despite its simplicity is perfectly represented by the staging created by him.

So don't try to give this a more serious reading. "X" is just a tribute to the creation process and more than anything a love letter to the fans.

The style, the gore, even the nasty and humorous bits make for a solid symbiosis, while offering a perspective where the enthusiasm for those brings life and fun to a film that doesn't feel terrifying, but undoubtedly exudes horror from every pore.

It's his best film? I think it is.

It tells the story of a group of young adult film crew and actors who travel to a reclusive elderly couple’s remote farm residence to shoot a movie in secret, but things quickly turn deadly come nightfall when the owners start to find out what their new guests have been up to.

What I particularly liked about this film is that it is patient in taking the time to develop its characters and to build up the tension before unleashing the inevitable carnage. For a large portion of the film, you don’t even realize you are watching a slasher movie, but you can tell something sinister is brewing in the background constantly, and you are just waiting for the fateful moment that it boils over. There are some very cool shots and film sequences throughout the movie with long takes, birds-eye view angles, as well as cutting back-and-forth between events in the real world and the movie the crew is currently shooting to enforce a story-within-a-story dynamic. When the killing does start the violence is impactful and disturbing but never overdone, and the movie also finds ample opportunities to sneak in some comedic relief here and there which I appreciate. Furthermore, I want to highlight the top-notch acting from everyone involved and some awesome popular music inserts and the soundtrack.

If there is one thing that I wanted a bit more from the movie, it would be to explore deeper into the history and the motivation of the killers. From some of the actions and dialogues that were peppered throughout the story, it is already hinted that the villains are not your average chainsaw-wielding mask-wearing maniacs but rather folks that have an emotionally-charged reason that are driving them in their heinous deeds which are more than just random killings. I just wished the story spent more time on that, as currently it just ends up being a good ol’ slasher movie when it had the potential to be something deeper and more special.

Overall, a very solid entry into the slasher genre that I’m sure will satisfy people both looking for blood and gore as well as something a bit more on the indie/artsy side of things. A24 has done it again so definitely don’t miss this one out if you are a fan of horror.

Happy to say X is not that movie!!! It definitely earns its R rating. the first 45 minutes is a slow burn, with some pretty good acting and porn making scenes, which weren't bad. Where it starts getting gory and killtacular is just over the half way mark. The kills are grizzly and original, despite their being 18 thousand slasher movies out there. The story is original, with a psychotic elderly couple out of their minds. This is nothing like that one boring film from M. Night Shamalan or whoever, with the two old people who babysit the 3 kids. That movie is G rated compared to this. X is violent and gory, with plenty of boobs! Brittany from Pitch Perfect did a wonderful job and she actually has a pretty awesome pair of boobs, which people have probably never seen before. If you like bloody, gory slasher movies with boobs and a twist, this one is for you! Stay after the credits as there is a final scene. And the prequel is already in the works apparently!

The people who didn't like this movie are either turned off by nudity and gore, or are just trolling. They should actually look at the reasons the movie has an R rating instead of being surprised at how gory and pornographic it is. These types of horror movies are great, and if you are still trying to be scared as an adult then you should probably stop thinking scary movies actually exist anymore, because they don't. They are just "horror" movies now. Nothing scares me anymore, because it's all been done before. This movie is great because of the actors and kills. The old couple are creepy as hell!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What is the X? In the trailer and its associations in the film, it seems like it has mostly to do with the explicit nature of adult films. There's the thread of a discussion about the early days of VHS kink ("Debby Does Dallas") and the way in which metatheatrically our filmmakers intend to make art out of smut or maybe art and smut. The issue is undermined in part by a twist--around the midway post in the film when the genre shifts from sexy cabin in the woods to scary cabin in the woods--as the cinematographer's girlfriend played by the thrilling Jenna Ortega volunteers herself as yet another one of the porn film's eponymous farmer's daughters. The cinematographer suggests she's "not like the other girls," drawing a distinction between his certainty that he can elevate this form to high art and his low opinion of porn people. X takes us through the tropes of eliminating our crew one by one in mostly rote fashion. There's some defiance of expectations with the opening scene which comes out of chronological order and gives us some indication of the final set piece, a struggle, a mysterious basement, but it's not clear in what order or which survivors. In that sense, X can go through the motions of the cabin in the woods (and the Cabin in the Woods) genre without feeling stale. A few of the death scenes and scares are ruined by trailer fatigue, but I think the part where you scream out loud probably indicates something profound about your values and psychological state. I went with three Friends who were all avowedly not horror film people. One of them clarified before she walked in, "I'm mostly interested in the intersection of porn and horror" to which all the rest of them nodded vigorously, though I'm beginning to think that this audience is less niche than one might think. Friend sent me a link to a discussion from the New Yorker's television critic(s?) "The Sex Scene is Dead, Long Live the Sex Scene," discussing the current state of erotic thrillers, penis prosthetics, and Euphoria which I'm currently in the process of finishing the second season. Slate's Dana Stevens just wrote a piece about how your enjoyment of Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck's Deepwater will hinge on how much you miss erotic thrillers. I think A24's blitz of X and After Yang in the same month, there's something to be said for the ambition of drawing a heterogeneous crowd of skeptics, even if I'm not entirely sure this movie is markedly different than a stripped down Tucker and Dale Vs Evil (2011) or maybe something more mainstream like Evil Dead.

Anyway, on screams indicating something about you -- spoilers ahead -- one friend tried to keep it together for most of the Day sequence and then lost it with Ortega's fingers, for me, I was completely unfazed until the only blonde lady in the film got pushed into the lake, which I think probably doesn't reflect well on me. There's one death at the tail end of the movie that had the theater erupting into laughter and applause, which I think is a rare and special occasion. I cringe to bring up M Night Shyamalan, but The Visit had a similar kind of feelsy, heartfelt core about the humanity of old people. I think that movie was more about sundown syndrome and dementia and X explores sex and sexuality in old age. This is in no way a recommendation, but I thought I better flag it in case there was more than a passing resemblance between these two creepypasta movies.

X's cinematography and pacing surprise: parallel scenes, side by side montages, a musical number from Kid Cudi. The cast is peopled with fresh starlets--Jenna Ortega, Mia Goth--and a Matthew McConnaughy lookalike but with charm and warmth. The scares are a medley of horror movie tropes and the sexy bits are a medley of porn tropes. The Marilyn-type moans performatively to prove she's a good actress like Meg Ryan in the cafe. But then the scenes with the alligators, oh boy, every time they're there. Mia Goth's double performance is subtle --there's a tongue-in-cheek end credits scene that's totally worth it for tying a loose thread.

I had so much fun with "X". It is so unique and yet it feels familiar. The writing is fantastic. The actors "chefs kiss". Everyone of them. Ti West doesnt shy away and thats what horror movie needs.
