Unfortunately (or fortunately for moviegoers), the creepy elderly landlords complicate matters. The first hour sets up the story with a few softcore moments and plenty of dialogue. It takes that long before the murders begin and they're not worth the wait. The killings are dispatched quickly without much originality or gruesome detail. There's more ominious atmosphere than fear. This is kinda like a reference to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but it's nowhere as clever or tense. NOTE: Stay thru the credits for a preview of a sequel (?). Expand

X had a great cast, was well-directed, and had an epic final act that made the movie worth watching. All of that doesn't make up for the lifeless bore that it was during the first 2/3 of the movie. There was just so little actually going on that a majority of what we were seeing felt unnecessary. Specifically, I would point out the needlessly long and numerous sex scenes that really padded the early half of the movie. X made me want more than what I got because what I got ultimately left me unsatisfied. Expand

Genuinely Awful
I felt so bamboozled watching this movie considering the ratings are high enough and most people have it at the top of their “ scariest movie “ list. I should have known when it was also listed under “comedy” that I was wasting my money to watch it. Nothing about this movie was scary. The whole first half of the movie is basically watching porn (awkward enough with other people in the room) ; the second half then gives you lack luster kills with a boring storyline. My boyfriend and I both hated it and I would never recommend this to anyone

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a piece of garbage. If this is where modern day slasher horror pictures are going I’m tapping out. If you wanna watch soft porn, especially 80 year olds getting it on, have at it. The group of early 20 year olds who I sat near and spoke to afterwards were disgusted and will be in shock for life. You can’t unsee what you should never have seen in the first place. A new low. Expand

I enjoy films that do that so why didn’t I like this? Because it didn’t do anything with those homages or tropes to make it stand out from those original films. We’ve seen all the tropes before and the tropes aren’t presented in a way that’s unique nor did I see any commentary about them present within the film. They just used them because it made sense and that annoyed me as it made the story incredibly predictable and boring. The only part that makes this story stand out is the set up as it’s a group of people using an old cabin to film a porno. We haven’t seen anything like that and it was interesting to see a horror film have a different set up every once in a while. The film looks great though. The cinematography is great and it was the presentation of the film that kept me going along with the performances. Mia Goth and Jenna Ortega did a great job and I’m interested to see where their careers go from here. The actual kills themselves felt largely bland. There were one or two that caught me off guard with how unique they were everything else felt like your typical horror movie kills without adding anything unique to them. They showed a trailer for the prequel film at the end that looked so much better than this and it sucks that the best part of this movie was that prequel trailer. I struggle to recommend checking this out as you can watch other horror films and get the same tropes but if you want some interesting presentation and setup for a horror film then maybe check this out. AsDirected by Ti West, this horror slasher set in 1979 Texas follows a group of amateur porno filmmakers who set up shop in an old farmhouse, much to the chargin of the elderly couple living there who doesn't take kindly to their presence. As you can imagine, sex, murder, and mayhem ensue. Judging by the trailer for this film when I first saw it, I had very low expectations for this one, as it simply looked like just another generic slasher movie, and the many tropes and cliches that come with films like this have been worn way thin. However, I gave it a chance mostly due to the fact that it stars a few decent names such as Mia Goth and rapper Kid Cudi (Scott Mescudi), as well as the fact that A24 was distributing. Well sure enough, this film was just as terrible, predictable, and absurd as I thought it would be. It's completely riddled with slasher cliches from start to finish, from the kills and cheap jump scares to the stereotypical dumb victims you'd expect to find in a film like this. The film is also highly predictable from start to finish. Every kill, jump scare, etc. You can see coming from a mile away. It's also surprisingly slow and drags quite a bit whenever the killing isn't happening. And just when I thought it couldn't possibly get any worse, we're treated to a post-credit scene teasing us with a prequel to this film that looks just as ridiculous and awful as this film was. So overall, silly jump scares, endless cliches, subpart acting, and typical dumb characters make this one a total dud, completely forgettable, and just as disposable as the rest in the endless line of cliche slasher flicks that have come before this one. It's an early contender for worse film of 2022 so far for me. I have NO idea what A24 saw in this one when they agreed to distribute it, let alone what all the other critics who raved about this one saw in it. Expand

Lacks creativity to the point where the movie if you have seen any slasher movie from the last 20 years, you basically know the plot to this one. On top of the direction, the movie wants to be an art film but fails as it just leads to some artistic cuts but some are nonsensical. This draws parallels to the cameraman in the movie where he was insistent, claiming that the porno is going to be an art film. The best part of the film is near the end with the shotgun scene, if you have seen it, you will know it. Expand

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Not only is this movie a highly entertaining horror film on its own right, but it's also a love letter to all kinds of classic cinema, from the horror genre to the French New Wave to the Golden Age of Porn.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre influence is obvious (this film is a better TCM movie than the one we got earlier this year), but the film is also full of nods to movies like Friday the 13th, Psycho and even Easy Rider with some of the editing.

The movie is darkly funny to the point where I actually laughed out loud at certain moments, and the characters were all surprisingly pretty fun and engaging. The main elderly couple is surprisingly well developed and there are times where you even feel a little sad for them, even if you don't believe for a second that they are actually old.

It's not really all that scary, it's simply a lot of fun with entertaining characters and good villains. Add to that fantastic editing and directing and you got yourself a certified top-tier throwback slasher.

I went in expecting something amazing. The reviews really mislead me. It was good, don’t get me wrong. But don’t listen to the rotten tomatoes score.
The first half of the movie is just setup, introducing the characters and story. But it’s not that complicated of a story and the characters weren’t interesting enough to require that much set up. Then when the horror finally starts, it’s not very scary, just jump scares and gore. The kills aren’t interesting or creative as well, and lack any sort of weight to them. It’s just “oh he’s dead, now he’s dead, now she’s dead” one after another. Most of the characters aren’t even scared when they die, they don’t even realize what’s happening. I also found it super dull that the main bad guys were just regular people, old people at that! How did two 80 year old geezers manage to kill this many people, it’s a pretty lame choice.
I did really enjoy the atmosphere and cinematography. It felt like a movie that might have actually been released in the 70s. The acting was pretty good too, I especially liked Kid Cudi. His performance has me excited to see him in other projects and I even went to check out some of his music. I was somewhat entertained all throughout, so I’d say it’s not a waste of time. If you like classic era slashers, movies set in the 70s, or slow burn thrillers, you’d probably enjoy your time with this one.

Anyone who has seen a Ti West film knows that what they lack in ambition and narrative complexity, they make up for with a style that many horror directors wish they had.

Netflix's lousy new Texas Chainsaw Massacre would have begged for just a piece of the atmosphere achieved in this film.

"X" as West himself has put it, is a tribute to the pornographic genre and of course to horror. Obviously for many things this is just a horror more than anything else, but the soul of this story despite its simplicity is perfectly represented by the staging created by him.

So don't try to give this a more serious reading. "X" is just a tribute to the creation process and more than anything a love letter to the fans.

The style, the gore, even the nasty and humorous bits make for a solid symbiosis, while offering a perspective where the enthusiasm for those brings life and fun to a film that doesn't feel terrifying, but undoubtedly exudes horror from every pore.

It's his best film? I think it is.

It tells the story of a group of young adult film crew and actors who travel to a reclusive elderly couple’s remote farm residence to shoot a movie in secret, but things quickly turn deadly come nightfall when the owners start to find out what their new guests have been up to.

What I particularly liked about this film is that it is patient in taking the time to develop its characters and to build up the tension before unleashing the inevitable carnage. For a large portion of the film, you don’t even realize you are watching a slasher movie, but you can tell something sinister is brewing in the background constantly, and you are just waiting for the fateful moment that it boils over. There are some very cool shots and film sequences throughout the movie with long takes, birds-eye view angles, as well as cutting back-and-forth between events in the real world and the movie the crew is currently shooting to enforce a story-within-a-story dynamic. When the killing does start the violence is impactful and disturbing but never overdone, and the movie also finds ample opportunities to sneak in some comedic relief here and there which I appreciate. Furthermore, I want to highlight the top-notch acting from everyone involved and some awesome popular music inserts and the soundtrack.

If there is one thing that I wanted a bit more from the movie, it would be to explore deeper into the history and the motivation of the killers. From some of the actions and dialogues that were peppered throughout the story, it is already hinted that the villains are not your average chainsaw-wielding mask-wearing maniacs but rather folks that have an emotionally-charged reason that are driving them in their heinous deeds which are more than just random killings. I just wished the story spent more time on that, as currently it just ends up being a good ol’ slasher movie when it had the potential to be something deeper and more special.

Overall, a very solid entry into the slasher genre that I’m sure will satisfy people both looking for blood and gore as well as something a bit more on the indie/artsy side of things. A24 has done it again so definitely don’t miss this one out if you are a fan of horror.

Definitely enjoyable, and some references that tells me the director and writers are well versed in the world of cinema in general, but it's not the strongest piece. McGuffins aren't meant to necessarily be interesting to the viewer, only the characters, but some of them in this film seem silly at times, and as if it aimed at the viewer. Does have a good polished look and some promising young cast like Mia Goth who usually delivers a realistic pitch. So many variables, but I'm going to have to go with 'almost 7'. Happy to say X is not that movie!!! It definitely earns its R rating. the first 45 minutes is a slow burn, with some pretty good acting and porn making scenes, which weren't bad. Where it starts getting gory and killtacular is just over the half way mark. The kills are grizzly and original, despite their being 18 thousand slasher movies out there. The story is original, with a psychotic elderly couple out of their minds. This is nothing like that one boring film from M. Night Shamalan or whoever, with the two old people who babysit the 3 kids. That movie is G rated compared to this. X is violent and gory, with plenty of boobs! Brittany from Pitch Perfect did a wonderful job and she actually has a pretty awesome pair of boobs, which people have probably never seen before. If you like bloody, gory slasher movies with boobs and a twist, this one is for you! Stay after the credits as there is a final scene. And the prequel is already in the works apparently!

The people who didn't like this movie are either turned off by nudity and gore, or are just trolling. They should actually look at the reasons the movie has an R rating instead of being surprised at how gory and pornographic it is. These types of horror movies are great, and if you are still trying to be scared as an adult then you should probably stop thinking scary movies actually exist anymore, because they don't. They are just "horror" movies now. Nothing scares me anymore, because it's all been done before. This movie is great because of the actors and kills. The old couple are creepy as hell!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What is the X? In the trailer and its associations in the film, it seems like it has mostly to do with the explicit nature of adult films. There's the thread of a discussion about the early days of VHS kink ("Debby Does Dallas") and the way in which metatheatrically our filmmakers intend to make art out of smut or maybe art and smut. The issue is undermined in part by a twist--around the midway post in the film when the genre shifts from sexy cabin in the woods to scary cabin in the woods--as the cinematographer's girlfriend played by the thrilling Jenna Ortega volunteers herself as yet another one of the porn film's eponymous farmer's daughters. The cinematographer suggests she's "not like the other girls," drawing a distinction between his certainty that he can elevate this form to high art and his low opinion of porn people. X takes us through the tropes of eliminating our crew one by one in mostly rote fashion. There's some defiance of expectations with the opening scene which comes out of chronological order and gives us some indication of the final set piece, a struggle, a mysterious basement, but it's not clear in what order or which survivors. In that sense, X can go through the motions of the cabin in the woods (and the Cabin in the Woods) genre without feeling stale. A few of the death scenes and scares are ruined by trailer fatigue, but I think the part where you scream out loud probably indicates something profound about your values and psychological state. I went with three Friends who were all avowedly not horror film people. One of them clarified before she walked in, "I'm mostly interested in the intersection of porn and horror" to which all the rest of them nodded vigorously, though I'm beginning to think that this audience is less niche than one might think. Friend sent me a link to a discussion from the New Yorker's television critic(s?) "The Sex Scene is Dead, Long Live the Sex Scene," discussing the current state of erotic thrillers, penis prosthetics, and Euphoria which I'm currently in the process of finishing the second season. Slate's Dana Stevens just wrote a piece about how your enjoyment of Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck's Deepwater will hinge on how much you miss erotic thrillers. I think A24's blitz of X and After Yang in the same month, there's something to be said for the ambition of drawing a heterogeneous crowd of skeptics, even if I'm not entirely sure this movie is markedly different than a stripped down Tucker and Dale Vs Evil (2011) or maybe something more mainstream like Evil Dead.

Anyway, on screams indicating something about you -- spoilers ahead -- one friend tried to keep it together for most of the Day sequence and then lost it with Ortega's fingers, for me, I was completely unfazed until the only blonde lady in the film got pushed into the lake, which I think probably doesn't reflect well on me. There's one death at the tail end of the movie that had the theater erupting into laughter and applause, which I think is a rare and special occasion. I cringe to bring up M Night Shyamalan, but The Visit had a similar kind of feelsy, heartfelt core about the humanity of old people. I think that movie was more about sundown syndrome and dementia and X explores sex and sexuality in old age. This is in no way a recommendation, but I thought I better flag it in case there was more than a passing resemblance between these two creepypasta movies.

X's cinematography and pacing surprise: parallel scenes, side by side montages, a musical number from Kid Cudi. The cast is peopled with fresh starlets--Jenna Ortega, Mia Goth--and a Matthew McConnaughy lookalike but with charm and warmth. The scares are a medley of horror movie tropes and the sexy bits are a medley of porn tropes. The Marilyn-type moans performatively to prove she's a good actress like Meg Ryan in the cafe. But then the scenes with the alligators, oh boy, every time they're there. Mia Goth's double performance is subtle --there's a tongue-in-cheek end credits scene that's totally worth it for tying a loose thread.

I give this a 6.5/10. It is well shot, acted, and has an interesting story. But something feels missing here. I am interested in seeing the prequel "Pearl" coming later this year.

Overall great style that matches the era. The editing was mostly great, except they did this thing though where they jump to another scene then back then to the new scene, it was really disorientating and janky. The music was again mostly great, there were just some really odd cues that sounded wrong. It’s a very typical Ti West film, well made, full of style but sometimes slow. It’s a straight film with no meta and no irony which I like! The story is a bit ropey, it feels like some core character decisions don’t make any sense, especially with the old couple. Although mostly the character decisions felt natural. The jump scares are not well executed. Great sound design throughout. Great gore but possibly not enough of it, especially for a slasher film. One of the deaths with a pitchfork wasn’t believable at all. The old people looked ridiculous, the makeup to make them look old doesn’t work and the performances are completely wrong, they simply don’t seem old at all. I hated the guitar and singing interlude, it served no purpose. It’s an artistic film rather than an entertaining film, whilst it is entertaining it seems to put the art first. I didn’t like the opening of the film, it ruined the ending a bit for me, could have done without that opening. The story was original and interesting. Very reminiscent of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie serves no purpose. It's a somewhat retelling of TCSM with lower production value, terrible writing and boring dialogue. I don't really see the point in trying to reinvent the wheel without even trying to surpass the original.
The cast are bad and forgettable at best (kid cudi), grating and obnoxious at worse (mia goth). The gear switches into drive in the final 30mns, but every scene from then on is predictable and boringly unoriginal.
The only disturbing thing in this movie is how hard ti west tries to be shocking with gerontophilia. Because the gore is also pretty tame and...well, done a thousand times before.
Unoriginal, boring, predictable, with a terrible, grating lead. You may skip this one.

These directors that are hired to direct movies - where do they find them? I refer to a scene near the end where a female captive grabs an axe to break a door down. The idea here is to smash through a light duty panel on the door so she can put her arm through and unlock it. All fine so far, then, she smashes the panel furthest from the door lock and you can't help wonder, why? So while she is fart arsing around trying to unlock the door one of the baddie's turns up and smashes her hand against the door with the butt of his shotgun and you think to yourself, that must really hurt. Then the amazing bit starts, rather than withdraw her arm from the hole she just screams and does nothing giving the baddie the opportunity to smash her hand with his gun a couple more times.

When are these writers and directors going to appreciate that we, the audience, understand what artistic licence is and what it is not. In this story the artistic licence includes a 90 year old granny who is as hot to trot as your average 20 year old girl.As unlikely as that is we accept it as it is central to the story and within the bounds of possibility. Leaving your hand exposed, while you can withdraw it to safety, while it is being ruthlessly smashed is not, it also just looks stupid.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Is a 2022 horror film. In 1979, a group of porn filmmakers rent a farmhouse. They are filming in secret from the elderly host couple. But the female of this elderly couple turns out to be a sexopath. Although the imdb rating of the film is close to 7, it is a film that will not have that score. There are plenty of nudity and sexual activity scenes available. This is the first time a serial killer has died on his own terms. Expand

The plot can for some people be weird and kinda not their taste, but if you put the fact away what the characters are doing and try to focus on the horror and filmmaking part of it, its just a blast of a good horror movie. I had so much fun with "X". It is so unique and yet it feels familiar. The writing is fantastic. The actors "chefs kiss". Everyone of them. Ti West doesnt shy away and thats what horror movie needs. The plot is all the way very simple and yet fascinating and so fresh. Very well done. Expand
