This was a very smart, dark, and funny comedy with a ton of fantastic moments and quotable lines. Possibly my favourite aspect of the movie is the offhanded acceptance of the basic premise that the vampires are going to kill to survive, and all the violence and gore that comes with it--everyone, both vampire and human, politely ignores the questionable morals at work, and it makes for a delightfully amoral movie. I do wonder how many pints of fake blood they went through during production.… Expand

Hilarious parody that manages to be foolish and clever at the same time. Boy did i enjoy this movie!! Did not actually know what to expect, or if i would even watch it at all, but i'm so glad i did. It is one of the funniest movies I've seen in the past 10 years. I loved What we do in the shadows. It is hilarious, smart, and a super enjoyable film. It's a fake documentary that presents some vampires trying to deal with modern times.

Horror tends to depict vampires in their most psychopathic states, while vampire "genre" fiction tends to go more self-serious. Which means if the vampire isn't evil, then they're at the very least brooding. Which means if the vampire isn't evil, then they're at the very least brooding. And If they're not soulless, then you better believe that they're anguished. But what happens when they're petty? Pitiful? Unintelligent? And better yet, what happens when you throw these petty, pitiful, unintelligent vampires together in a flop house rental, then document the minutia of their lives? A movie so funny it borders on lunacy, with a juxtaposition so profound you'll wonder why the hell you ever took these creatures seriously in the first place.
The jokes are original and stem from the characters, not forced situations. The acting is superb, and, did I mention the jokes are hilarious?
Please give this a watch. I don't want to review it any further because you should go into this film as fresh as possible. It's a contender for funniest film of the year, along with Paul Feig's "Spy."… Expand

One of the funniest movies since I was suprised by O' Brother Where Art Thou (although completely different style)

Absolutely fantastic movie. Great writing with lots of hilarious twists and turns. The special effects are pretty good also. "Cult classic" is the phrase that comes to mind.

This film was overall a pretty funny film. It's idea was great but i find they didn't make the most out of it and didn't make it as funny as they could have. I had really high expectations due to it containing two flight of the conchord members but it seems like they didn't write as strongly on this film as they did on that show: however i did hear some mention of a lot of this film being improvised. The characters are funny and there are some great comedic moments but the humour lacks in places and peaks in others. Another thing to note though is that some of the effects in this film are great, not eye popping but look really cool in the documentary style fashion. There is better mocumentaries out there but this one is still a pretty funny watch and i would encourage people to see it. I'd give it a 6.4/10.… Expand

A soon-to-be cult classic comedy, you should not miss out on this movie!

A spoof of vampire movies that showcases the kind of quirky humor one would expect from the likes of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement. The premise of following around these bloodsucking roommates all documentary style while they deal with the ins and outs of modern day life is amusing. It's never the funniest movie out there, but the further it progresses the more successful it becomes at mining laughs from the audience. The early material I thought was just a little dry.


There are a lot of homages made to creature of the night classics such as Interview with the Vampire and The Lost Boys. Some of the best gags poke fun at vampire lore and their powers. It even branches out to make jokes involving other monsters as well. I feel Waititi gets most of the screen time here. He's a really delightful guy, but I wish we had gotten more material from Clement. His character was the one with the most comedic potential in my opinion and it's him that has the most memorable lines.


This was a parody made out of genuine love and enjoyment for the thing being made fun of. With so many quotable one liners it's an entertaining watch, although not necessarily an essential one as it isn't exactly a laugh riot. There's a seemingly huge plot hole that gets addressed during the end credits in the best possible way so be sure to sit through them.… Expand

What We Do in the Shadows instantly establishes itself as one of the best horror-comedies of recent in that it's laughs are achieved while resisting the urge to mock the horror-genre in the easiest way possible.

Horror-spoofs such as TheWhat We Do in the Shadows instantly establishes itself as one of the best horror-comedies of recent in that it's laughs are achieved while resisting the urge to mock the horror-genre in the easiest way possible.

Horror-spoofs such as The 'Scary Movie' franchise, the 'Haunted House' series, and the seemingly endless churn of garbage from Aaron Seltzer have taken this fatally-obvious approach. They assume the very least of their audiences and attempt at humor that is often obvious, crude, and disgusting, if not flat-out vile and, worst of all, unfunny. If it were not for the very properties that these movies blatantly plagiarize for proverbial recognizability, there would be nothing of initial distinction to even consider for viewing. There is no moral, no substance, no logic, no reason whatsoever. If you feel like you're succumbing to the juvenile urge to see a character from the most recent successful horror-entry defecate in ridiculous scenarios, What We Do in the Shadows could prove to be good medicine for your comedic sensibilities.

Clement and Waititi take a less-cynical, more subtle approach by infusing a ribald silliness with legitimate character detail and situational creativity. What We Do in the Shadows uses the mockumentary format to follow three vampire-stooge flatmates (and one monstrous Nosferatu named 'Peter') living together in an obscure town in modern-day New Zealand. While the majority of the plot is mainly in service of the jokes and plays out pretty melodramatically (albeit mockingly so), the vein of humor (pun unintended) that is tapped into here more than makes up for it's predictability.

One of the ongoing gags that goes over quite well is the absurd juxtaposition of the archaic lifestyle these vampires lead with the newfangled (pun unintended) environment they live in. The constant, ridiculous decor they don (vests, frilly lace) to their over-the-top accents and a distinct lack of technological or societal awareness results in some pretty hilarious, albeit a bit obvious, results. When the movie gives in to the darker vein of comedy we'd come to expect from a film about amoral bloodsuckers is when it truly strikes gold, however. The preparation for drinking a victim by laying out newspapers, the nonsensical explanation as to why the vampires 'prefer virgins', and the constant devaluing of human life altogether, add up to some deliciously bleak vignettes that gives the film some bite (another awful pun, unintended).

Stylistically, I feel that Clement and Waititi borrow much in the way of delivery and execution to 2006's 'Borat'. Much like that comedy masterpiece, the characters here spew nonsensical opinions on their world in such a naive, close-minded way that makes their barbaric behavior despicable, yet hilarious, and allows for subtle commentary on morality that doesn't feel entirely shoe-horned in.

There are plenty of gags that fall flat here, the introduction of another flatmate points the focus of the film unnecessarily on one-note melodrama, and the whole thing begins to feel a bit stale after about the 50-minute mark. Otherwise, What We Do in the Shadows is a thankfully brief, hilariously dark horror-comedy that is a definite recommendation for fans of both. It has fantastic replay value and quotability, and I dare say it's one of the best vampire films to come out in the '10s, period.… Expand

Vampire satire made as fake documentary. So effective as Polanski´s The fearless vampire killers, especially the tribute to Murnau´s Nosferatu and the modest FX. Good choice for a weekend evening, with a string of garlic.

Zudem klären Clement und Waititi ganz beiläufig Fragen, auf die nicht einmal Bram Stoker eine Antwort wüsste: Warum stehen Vampire auf Jungfrauen? „Würdest du ein Sandwich essen, das vorher jemand gevögelt hat?“ antwortet Vladislav bierenst. In seinem Kosmos noch realistischer wird 5 Zimmer Küche Sarg durch die geniale Idee, jeder Figur einen prototypischen Vampir-Charakter zuzuweisen – Bestie, Dandy, Pfähler – und der schlauen Einbindung historischer Dokumente und Kunstwerke. What We Do in the Shadows was definitely something I didn't expect. I knew it was a comedy, but I didn't know it was a comedy done in the form of a fake documentary! I really enjoyed the story, which follows a group of vampires who are living in modern day New Zealand, and the comedy was great. I also really appreciated how they didn't drag out the movie. It's a very lean 85 minutes, and if it had gone any longer I think it would have started to crash and burn, primarily because it had already started to lose quite a bit of steam by about the 70 minute mark. But despite not enjoying the ending quite as much as I would have liked, I still think What We Do in the Shadows is a comedy that definitely deserves to be on your watch list.… Expand

In the film we follow three vampires living in a flat together, all the while being documented by a film crew. That's about as far as I want to go into detail because it for me is timeless and I love introducing it to people who've not seen it.

It is hilarious and while not really being scary, has a lot of gore in parts that is just made into goofy scenarios that at times had me wheezing. Not only should it be watched, it is fully rewatchable. Check it out!… Expand

The popularity of the so-called "Mockumentary" subgenre appears to depend only on an intimate knowledge of the subject genre that frequently exceeds that of its most celebrated exponents, such as Spinal Tap.
