The movie is not as good as the last two but still not so bad. The story line is pretty boring, less intense than the previous two. The ending really hit me hard to the ground after the boredom and the end.

A great conclusion for the reboot series. It's action packed, the acting is great, and the story is great. I really hope Andy Serkis gets an Oscar for his performance, because he did an amazing job as Caesar.

"This is our last stand. And if we lose... it will be a Planet of Apes".

"War for the Planet of the Apes" has many intriguing plot points and plenty of great opportunities to shine as a great movie. I mean, with the previous two films that I liked so much and how the effects manage to improve over time is amazing. And this movie is worth seeing just for Andy Serkis performance and the incredible also realistic effects. Unfortunately, the rest is very uneven. While being a decent third installment, but draws the oldest cliches from the books.

Andy Serkis continues to impress us not just by giving us another great performance, but to convey all the emotions with his body and face while being coved with heavy effects. Serkis is the only actor that we think as expressed all of his range, but keeps surprising us with the characters he plays.

Speaking of effects, it's pretty much the stand out of the film. Despite knowing what we are seeing in front of us is CGI, but the illusion is so good, we forgot it's fiction. It really has involved over the years and we are also there to perfection.

The action scene at the beginning was pretty good. A little bit cheesy with all the slow-mo and people dramatically dying everything with music in the background, but I guess you got to start with a bang.

I think Caesar getting captured and locked up in that prison is when the film fell apart for me. Yep, it's a prison break movie and that isn't a bad thing, just needed to be more sharper in terms of its' execution. The movie goes way overboard with the Jesus, Nazi allegories, and Holocaust imagery. Yeah, I'm not making that up. So heavy handed it's impossible to miss. You could add "Apocalypse Now" in the mix with the small references to it, because why not. It's like whoever wrote this kept shouting at me "get it?".

The comedic relief ape character (Bad Ape) and the little girl are the most pointless characters in a movie ever. I didn't laugh at anything the Bad Ape did that was suppose to be funny. The little girl didn't do anything.

Woody Harrelson as the villain was fine. There's a long monologue about him talking this virus and how it involved. What could have been an interesting and also menacing scene, quickly goes on a little too long. I don't have an issue with Harrelson performance, just if the character was written better.

There's a really stupid moment in the movie when a guard gets **** thrown at him by the apes and tries to find who did it. So he literally locks himself in the cage filled with millions of apes and doesn't inform the other guards, just in case they might attack him. Like, how freaking stupid to you have to be? And you can tell what's going to happen. It was written in the movie just for the apes to escape and it's so lazy.

There seem to be a lack of security guards in the prison, because when a little girl manages to walk straight in without anyone see her, now that's questionable. Or notice when the apes escaped. Like how many guards are there? People are calling this a masterpiece?

Overall Rating: While it may seem like I disliked the film, that couldn't be further to the truth. I'm not saying it's a bad movie or anything, because it's not. There are plenty of good and well done scenes that makes me curious what Matt Reeves will bring to "The Batman".

War for the Planet of the Apes didn't capture me like the rest of the films in the trilogy, but it still manages to be a good film even if not on the same level of its predecessors. Unlike Rise or Dawn that tackled current topics in the worldWar for the Planet of the Apes didn't capture me like the rest of the films in the trilogy, but it still manages to be a good film even if not on the same level of its predecessors. Unlike Rise or Dawn that tackled current topics in the world like gun control, War makes symbolic references to the bible and slavery. These aren't subtle references either they're very obvious instead unlike Dawn's were with gun control. This movie also tries to add humor into a series of movies that never really touched humor to begin with. This in turn makes the jokes fall flat, and they rely on one ape that just turns out to be more annoying than funny. There's one thing for sure though, and that is the apes in this movie have never looked so good. The CGI in this film is worth the price of admission alone. Andy Serkis and Woody Harrelson do a fantastic job as the leads in this movie, and you can really feel the tension when these two leaders interact with each other on screen. In the end War for the Planet of the Apes acts as the "swan song" in Cesar's journey. Although it didn't reach the heights of its predecessors it is still a fitting conclusion to one of the best movie trilogies of the decade. Expand

Characters are great, story is great, directing and acting are awesome. It's not all good though, the ending feels lazy, and (sort of personal grudge) while the movie spends a lot of time setting up the original 1968 film, it won't go so far as to destroy the statue of liberty. Also the trailers sell a war, and the movie delivers a stealth mission, so the pacing feels off and the movie feels really slow even though it's not. Bottom line, don't expect action/war movie. There are many aspects of the movie that I am disappointed with. What's with the introduction of Steve Zahn's character? So needless and such a waste of the run time. Same with the mute girl that they find. Both are pretty much used as plot devices to further things along and offer little to no substance to the film. Zahn's character was the Jar Jar Binks of this film, Totally and utterly needless comic relief.

Now as for the plot itself, It makes sense all the way up to the climax. We are cheated out of an epic fight between hero and villain. Everything miraculously works in favor of the apes. That felt like a very cheap way out to me, A watered down ending to carry on the series now that Serkis and Reeves are done with it.

It's gripping story gives rise to possibilities of more franchises in the world of Planet of the Apes than ending the story. This one puts even more emphasis on the drama, almost to the exclusion of any big battles. Caesar fights back against a human army (led by Woody Harrelson), but there's more heart-felt conversation and sneaking around than full out fighting. That being said, the animation of the apes is even more impressively effective in conveying emotions (led by another remarkable performance from Andy Serkis). While much of the interactions are compelling, almost every scene plays out too long. Once again, Michael Seresin's cinematography turns some stunning locations into beautiful images and the simian characterizations are enthralling. While Matt Reeves' distinctive directorial vision is engrossing and at times unique, it's more about emotion than action. (This much ape interaction means lots of subtitles to translate their hairy gestures.) Expand

Did they not check there was a massive tunnel system that goes right under the base that conveniently goes under all the cells ?!?
How can you not see a thousand apes climb out of these cages? What was the disease the little girl had ? Worst woody performance yet he didnt want to be there.
i could go on and on ..

Despite having the title "War for the Planet of the Apes" there really isn't much "War" going on.

Whatever you do, do NOT go to this movie expecting gun shots and explosions every five seconds, because what lies beneath is a very mellow, character driven story thrown together with doses of humor and brief moments of effects driven action. Despite what the title would have you think, this is a very quiet and somber film, with a cold tone to represent humanity in this world of apes vs humans. There are loud moments for sure. Scenes with helicopters shooting stuff and things blowing up. Mostly though, there are heart felt character moments where you really feel the pain of the film's main protagonist, Caesar. On that level, the film succeeds.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Andy Serkis and Woody Harrelson are excellent and the CGI is solid. Those are the positives. The movie just doesn't add anything to the trilogy outside of providing an ending and even then it's just not satisfying. The trailer, poster, and title are all misleading. They frame the story as Caeser seeking revenge, a mysterious young girl, and a desperate final battle between man and ape. That epic showdown between The Colonel's humans and Caeser's apes never comes. The opening scene is strong and makes you think the war is raging, but about half an hour in the human/ape conflict seems to fall by the wayside. Yeah the humans still hate the apes, but the "War for the Planet of the Apes" for this movie is human vs. human with apes around. There are a lot of tight, claustrophobic shots but as the lack of real conflict becomes more apparent, it just comes off as cheap tension. There are also a lot of awkwardly long shots of characters as they stare at each other and make "tough" decisions even though the audience knows exactly how each one will turn out. They're meant to make it more dramatic but you just want it to be done already. Outside of Woody Harrelson's Colonel, the new characters aren't worth the time. The movie would be the same whether or not the little girl was there (minus some shallow philosophical questions) and Bad Ape brings plot holes and is just a groan to watch. He's entertaining if you liked Jar Jar Binks. Very disappointing overall. Expand

The effects are as impressive and engaging as ever, the story is gripping and has plenty of heart and emotion, which many of us have come to expect from this trilogy, and the acting from both human and ape is stellar, with Andy Serkis delivering outstanding work as usual as Caesar. Woody Harrelson is also notable in his villainous turn. Overall, it's undoubtedly exciting, full of heart, and concludes things rather satisfyingly, but by the end, I still found myself preferring the middle chapter (Dawn) slightly more. Nonetheless, this film is right behind that one in my opinion and I couldn't have asked for a stronger or more satisfying conclusion to this solid and memorable trilogy! Expand

Because War For The Planet Of The Apes, aside from being the best movie of this rebooted extravaganza, has shown me things i didn't expect a reboot could do,and that is being a magnificent,if not also emotional, conclusion of the trilogy. The story is probably one the more serious i saw in a long time, with unexpectedly poignant moments and some of the most remarkable action scenes of 2017. With each passing year, the motion capture gets phenomenal every time, and so does this one, being a little bit more detailed. The acting was terrific: Andy Serkis as Caesar is strong as always,Woody Harrelson as the nefarious Colonel is,well, nefarious, and luckily,Steve Zahn as Bad Ape didn't ruin the movie. You could have some funny moments here and there, but honestly,i expected worse. And let's not forget about the astounding score by Michael Giacchino...I can talk for hours about that piece of musical wonder. I was also impressed by how the cinematography worked in this movie. In the end,if you thought Logan was the best movie of the year, well, you can think again. War For The Planet Of The Apes is a delightful conclusion to an already solid trilogy, with breathtaking visual effects,an unexpectedly dark and poignant story and a score by Michael Giacchino that puts the webhead in silence (and that will probably become part of your nightmares...) Unlike many trilogies though this third film actually comes out as the best in my opinion. The film features an oscar worthy performance by Andy Serkis as the ape protagonist Caesar, great characters (new and old), a powerful message, engaging action, stunning directing, a beautiful soundtrack, and inarguably the best CG effects and motion capture in a film to date. My only nitpick is a somewhat slow second act in comparison to the great first and third acts. Overall, War for the Planet of the Apes is arguably the best movie of the summer, best of the Planet of the Apes movies, and even the best of the year so far. Expand

The entire movie is top-notch quality. The writing was fairly predictable, but it had its moments that shine. Especially how they give the Apes more human or emotional qualities so that you can relate to their struggle. Its a little odd, that by the time the movie is finished, you're wishing for humanity's (or at least the antagonist's) death. The movie does end well, but seems as though there needed to be a transition towards the old movies. (I know enough to remember that the old ones take place way into the future)

Now that I've officially seen one of the films, it has piqued my interest into watching the rest. Good flick and only falls short, with there being too much focus on drama and less on action. After all, this movie is called "WAR for the Planet of the Apes".

Those types of films are timeless masterpieces that move you infinitely and change you after witnessing their triumphant immensity. I can assure you, War For The Planet Of The Apes belongs in that untouchable/unrateable category imo. When this prequel franchise started in 2011, I was intrigued yet somewhat cautious at the time. After witnessing Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, I was thoroughly impressed but yearning for more action as it was more of an intro and development into Caesar's character and the franchise overall and when looking back, it needed to be slower in that aspect for plotting/franchise building. Then in 2014 when Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes blew my expectations away with fast paced intensity, insane action sequences, as well as some very emotional dramatic moments, I hailed it as one of the best films to come out in quite some time which i still believe true. Koba's character was one of the best villain portrayals I've ever seen, and Andy Serkis as Ceasar was impeccable as he is in everything he does. Enter 2017 with War For The Planet Of The Apes as the epic finale to the trilogy. From the beginning to end it is the epitome of an emotionally triumphant journey full of twists and turns along the way with every single emotion and feeling you can experience as a viewer. Every shot and every scene was executed flawlessly and acted to perfection. It's the most beautifully scenic film I've seen with a wide array of visuals ranging from mountains, wilderness, and tragedy. The CGI and motion capture work on the apes is the best and most realistic of all time without question. Andy Serkis proves once again that he could quite possibly be the greatest yet one of the most unknown actors ever playing the role of the iconic Caesar. The soundtrack is completely and utterly fantastic and sets the sonic tone throughout in an homage manner to the original films. There is an amazing dichotomy between what's animal and what's human in morality throughout and it was fascinating. All in all this phenomenal classic conclusion encapsulates this particular rise/dawn/war ape trilogy as one of the greatest if not the greatest of all time. A harrowing and adventurous tale of unity and honor through all obstacles, staying strong together. APES TOGETHER STRONG!!! Expand

While there is certainly style to appreciate here, some impressive cinematography and special effects, War for the Planet of the Apes is not a "great" movie. After seeing the first two movies in the series, and the critical reception leading up to the third's release, I was expecting great things. But instead, I found myself incredibly bored and disappointed by a 2.5 hour runtime with frequent filler, constant failed attempts at emotional investment, and a painfully shallow philosophical component. I really hate saying stuff like this at the risk of coming across as pretentious, but this movie is trying to be an accessible Apocalypse Now or 2001: A Space Odyssey, and instead it is bland, predictable and does not deserve the praise it has been getting. I will note that it isn't an outright bad movie, we have enough of those nowadays for me to know the difference. But it definitely isn't special. Expand

ApesAre apes really better than people? Ever since the groundbreaking science-fiction novel was written by French author Pierre Boulle, we have questioned whether evolution will come to bite back at our dysfunctional political structure. Apes have yet to outsmart us idiotic humans, but now the last addition to the widely-praised reboot makes our future clearer.

War for the Planet of the Apes first gives us a recap of the last two films, explaining the RISE and the DAWN that led us to the WAR between apes and humans. Like most summer movies, CGI composes basically every single frame here. Although comparatively speaking, each ape design is distinctly detailed to move in the proper ape mannerism. From a distance, the apes look more like they belong in the PS4; up close, the light hits their skin perfectly: you could almost reach out to wipe the orangutan’s tears.

Many cast members here have returned from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes; while computers cloak their entire figure, the power in their eyes remain untouched to communicate true sincere pain. They speak either one word at a time or using American Sign Language, greeting one another with pressed foreheads rather than a familiar hug. The little actions they make will make you wonder how you could understand so much about another species apart from your own.

The rebellious species’ familiar leader, Caesar, continues being the most powerful asset of the franchise thanks to the stern performance by Andy Serkis. Now, Caesar can speak in mostly complete sentences, further motivating his fear for his own followers. However, his motivation to fight as revenge for the death of his family comes off rather weak; we’ve seen the scenario countless times before to much greater effect. Aside from Caesar, plenty of other complex characters hold the story up on its two-pawed feet, even if some key roles feel more underused than the smaller roles.
One of the smaller characters who gets a little more screen-time than he deserves is one of the few speaking apes, “Bad Ape,” terrifically played by Steve Zahn as he moves us one minute and cracks us up the next; the tension he adds grounds us into reality. Yet he also leans too much upon comic relief and too little upon being an actual character in a war movie. Think K-2SO in Rogue One, except a bit more useful.

As a war movie, director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) compromises the real brutality of a holocaust concentration camp for a suitable PG-13 rating. The true horrific moments come out from the details: several ape traitors join the humans as they rally up the other apes into cages to starve, the words “Ape-pocalypse Now” deface the underground chambers, an X-shaped torture device reminiscing crucifixion taunts the apes daily—it all lands on Caesar as he takes a whipping by his own kind just because he stood up for the apes’ rights.

Unfortunately, no perfection exists in this interpretation of a potential future, as it is ruled under a stereotypically evil ruler who likes to monologue about his past. It also makes no sense why the end of mankind would only affect the US. Considering these ape species originated from Africa and Southeast Asia, adding those governments into the scheme would have added some realism to a potential WWIII.

But one new character does bring out the deepest hope for humanity despite our inability to communicate. We get to meet Nova as a child, unable to speak, and brought alongside Caesar’s colleagues. Her introduction alone mesmerizes you: After breaking into a human’s home, one of these apes, the orangutan, notices Nova asleep in her bed. He returns her doll to her, slowly, keeping a curious gaze upon her gentle nature. Their silent eye-to-eye exchange brings the needed tension breaker during the endless line of heat. Her spectacular moments do not stop there, as she sees beauty in the harsh tribulation blind to her new ape friends. She looks past the snow to glance at the beauty of pink blossoms in the tree above. More characters like her need to be made for the screen, as someone so young of so few words can teach us grown men more than we realize about reconsidering our actions.

So in conclusion, War for the Planet of the Apes gives the Planet of the Apes franchise what it needed all along. It unrighteously continues to be detrimental to the humanity we can produce, yet still gives a satisfactory exploration of the value in communication much like what Arrival masterfully explored. Even if we already know how this movie will end, the impact of what so far is the best movie of the summer stands clear. You will be shocked from how much in common you share with these nonhumans fighting against ourselves, just further proof why apes are the most beautiful creatures in the animal kingdom.

War for the Planet of the Apes is a film loaded with dramatic, emotional and action moments making a balance rarely seen before in film history. The story is much deeper than the title "War" presents us as it is not limited to show us absurd fights and explosions but on the contrary, gives us a small dose of action and most of the story is a War but an internal war mainly that undergoes Ceasar, who is magnificently interpreted by Andy Serkis. Finally, excellent story, magnificent performance and direction, music at the level of the tape, action dose, drama and emotion, hyper-realistic CGI technology, evolving to the level of each tape of this renewed franchise, which closes with a touch of gold this acclaimed prequel. A visual and emotional show unique in its kind, which will not be so valued in these times but that over the years will become cult films. Expand

This film is not about war, it's about revenge, about survival. The first part of the rebooted franchise came out wonderful, the second turned into a movie about war and has lost a lot in the story and the characters. The third part of the work done on the bugs. It's not a massive blockbuster about the war, but rather a drama. This is not a mindless summer movie, there is a very strong story. Revenge, survival, family, decisions — that's what the movie's about. Caesar for the third time beautifully played by Andy Serkis. Nowadays technology has reached the point that we can see the smallest emotions on the faces of the computer model, and Andy Serkis is laid out! You believe him, sorry and worried about him. We watched Caesar from infancy, his character developed before our eyes. Therefore, in order to better emotionally to feel the movie you need to watch the previous two. The finale for this character, the most correct that could be. Other monkeys, too, you remember, and worry about, it would seem that computer models, like the real people. There are no unnecessary characters, unlike the second part, and each is remembered. Antagonist of Caesar was played by equally talented Woody Harrelson. For the trailers, I thought it would be flat evil villain, and Woody Harrelson is here so he pressed his charisma. But all went not so. Yes, he is charismatic and looks cool, but he can play, his character is not so simple, and it will be a strong scene. This film is surprising. To view it you think you know everything beforehand, that's just typical opposition of brave Americans, only now against the monkeys, not the Russians or other enemies. I think that there will not be strong characters, and the whole film will occupy the shooting and explosions. But it's not. It's a smart movie, touching. In the plot, "War for the Planet of the Apes" and gives us plot twists. You don't know what will happen next, I don't know what the outcome of this story. While similar, predictable movies it's really worth it. The film is amazing. It is beautiful, and you can't see where the graphics are, and where nature. But Director Matt Reeves has shown his talent. If the Director can make you cry an over drawn by monkeys, he has the talent. The few, the chamber of the battle scenes is also shot nice. But the film is not about that. There is no war here, here the confrontation of two charismatic representatives of the two types. Each of them wants to survive, and empathize with both man and the apes. Because both those and others there is a strong motivation. "War for the Planet of the Apes" is for me the movie was a surprise. I got more than expected and it is wonderful! This film carries the thought. It's not just a pretty shell, it is filling and tasty. Expand

This isWar of the planet of the Apes was a great conclusion to this Ape trilogy, and a must see for fans of the series. The heart and dedication to detail that went into the motion capture of the apes, is the best cinema has to offer. This is partly due to the amazing performance given by Andy Serkis as the main protagonist Caesar and the rest of the ape cast. When I first watched the prequel film back in 2011, I was a little biased as I wasn’t a fan of the Tim Burton remake that came prior to its release. I am so glad I took a chance on this reimaging of the series, as I was shocked at the depth of these films. Matt Reeves and writers took a series that can come across as extremely campy, and turned it into a modern day epic. The story of Caesar and his apes is one of the most compelling trilogies I have ever watched. I highly recommend watching this trilogy in its entirety as the weight of some early consequences echo through to the later films. Expand

ThisAlready one of my favorite movies this year, so far. 'War for the Planet of the Apes' is a fitting end to a classic trilogy that revitalized the long running "Planet of the Apes" franchise which started as far back as the late 1960s. This movie sees Caesar (another brilliant Andy Serkis performance) still trying to fight for survival with his entire family and friends of apes also looking for ways to survive. Things take an ugly turn when The Colonel (Woody Harrelson) discovers the apes' habitat, and Caesar feels he must take action. There is a lot to talk about in regards to the plot, but things do happen early on that the trailers did not show, so without the fear of spoiling the movie, I'll just review the movie in regards to what I loved so much about it. Director, Matt Reeves takes the personal and poignant (two words you never thought would be used to describe a "Planet of the Apes" movie) aspects of the previous movie, "Dawn", and makes it arguably more emotional here. Some new characters are also a welcome addition to the franchise, particularly Bad Ape (Steven Zahn), who provides just the right amount of comic relief when the movie needs levity, instead of being that funny character who overstays his welcome... in other words, he is nothing like Jar Jar Binks of the "Star Wars" prequels. Serkis is obviously better than ever, playing the emotionally distraught ape, Caesar, who is still horrified after the events of 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' (2014), the CGI looks just as good, if not, better than ever from the previous movie. The human characters are also very well developed, more so than in the previous two movies. This movie reminded me of 'Logan' (2017), in that, it's personal... it's not some colorful, fun blockbuster like 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' (2017) (which I really liked), but it's also not some dumb action extravaganza like the "Transformers" sequels. It's just a small, emotionally stirring and gripping movie that does not feel like a product of a big studio trying to spend their money, and waiting to make it back. 'War for the Planet of the Apes' is the perfect sequel to the surprisingly great "Rise", and the equally entertaining "Dawn". Also, Michael Giacchino's score is as terrific as ever, probably his best work since 'Inside Out' (2015). His music just fits the tone beautifully for the movie, and is sure to get a lot of people thinking once they see this. I cannot stress this enough of how great this movie is, it's one of my favorites this year so far. Expand
