ThisAlready one of my favorite movies this year, so far. 'War for the Planet of the Apes' is a fitting end to a classic trilogy that revitalized the long running "Planet of the Apes" franchise which started as far back as the late 1960s. This movie sees Caesar (another brilliant Andy Serkis performance) still trying to fight for survival with his entire family and friends of apes also looking for ways to survive. Things take an ugly turn when The Colonel (Woody Harrelson) discovers the apes' habitat, and Caesar feels he must take action. There is a lot to talk about in regards to the plot, but things do happen early on that the trailers did not show, so without the fear of spoiling the movie, I'll just review the movie in regards to what I loved so much about it. Director, Matt Reeves takes the personal and poignant (two words you never thought would be used to describe a "Planet of the Apes" movie) aspects of the previous movie, "Dawn", and makes it arguably more emotional here. Some new characters are also a welcome addition to the franchise, particularly Bad Ape (Steven Zahn), who provides just the right amount of comic relief when the movie needs levity, instead of being that funny character who overstays his welcome... in other words, he is nothing like Jar Jar Binks of the "Star Wars" prequels. Serkis is obviously better than ever, playing the emotionally distraught ape, Caesar, who is still horrified after the events of 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' (2014), the CGI looks just as good, if not, better than ever from the previous movie. The human characters are also very well developed, more so than in the previous two movies. This movie reminded me of 'Logan' (2017), in that, it's personal... it's not some colorful, fun blockbuster like 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' (2017) (which I really liked), but it's also not some dumb action extravaganza like the "Transformers" sequels. It's just a small, emotionally stirring and gripping movie that does not feel like a product of a big studio trying to spend their money, and waiting to make it back. 'War for the Planet of the Apes' is the perfect sequel to the surprisingly great "Rise", and the equally entertaining "Dawn". Also, Michael Giacchino's score is as terrific as ever, probably his best work since 'Inside Out' (2015). His music just fits the tone beautifully for the movie, and is sure to get a lot of people thinking once they see this. I cannot stress this enough of how great this movie is, it's one of my favorites this year so far. Expand

I must always keep in mind that this a science fiction movie. The apes seem all too human and must make many choices that are akin to human survival. But these are apes.. with the same wants, needs and interests as humans. Survival and existence without predatory threats. The action, acting and special effects are flawless. The plot was lacking some direction at times... and the villain...woody harrelson... was a bit conflicted ... which we will never know what his deal truly was. Was it Militarily centered... or some biological issue that the film sort of touched on? I guess we will never know. other than that.. good time on the couch. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
Cesar Vs Mechant.

Besides it being funny it has a ton of emotion and significant character moments. Caesar's death at the end was a great and satisfying way to close the book on the trilogy. One of the best movies of 2017.

This was my movie of the year 2017, together with Baby Driver. This is the best movie out of a great triology and a ending i didnt expect. In general the movie isnt really predictable and if you watch it with the regisseurs comments you now how much work and love they put in this movie. I rarely give a 10/10, but this movie really deserve it.

Even theFor starters, this movie is a technological marvel and will hold up for years to come. The CGI of the apes is nothing short of amazing and you never think it’s CGI, you believe those are actual animals with personalities. Even the camerawork makes it even more believable, because you get close ups of these apes and the apes don’t look any less believable which is very hard to do with CGI. The use of real sets and how seamlessly it blends with the CGI is another marvel because in many movies today I can easily see were CGI has been placed, but this movie does a marvelous job of using both practical and digital affects.

Lastly, the king of motion capture, the man, the myth, the legend Andy Serkis! What else can I say about this man that hasn’t already been said about him in these movies. The man gives another Oscar worthy performance as Caesar and shows a totally different dynamic of the character. You see through his performance that Caesar is in a totally different place and has just had it with settling with the humans and fights only to protect his kind. Andy Serkis brings this character to life yet again through his great emotional movements and expressions he brings to life as the king of motion capture. You also see Andy Serkis bring all new, damaged, aspects of the character. You see Caesar still trying to cope with the events of Dawn that Koba caused and him still thinking about what could’ve been if they didn’t happen. You also see a scene where Caesar make a decision that goes against all of his ideals, but you find a way to agree with this decision, and Caesar acknowledges that it’s his own flaw. Andy Serkis deserves an Oscar nomination for this performance, while he probably won’t get one he solidifies himself as one of the best actors in the business. Andy Serkis will forever be the king of all apes only known as Ceasar.

I thought that this movie was a compete masterpiece, but I did have to nitpick some things for the sake of this review. To start off, towards the end while the apes are attempting a mission a lot of conveniences happened so the plan is taking shape. While that cliche is used in almost every movie, it was a little too obvious while I watching the movie. Secondly, the little girl in the movie, while she did a fine job I couldn’t say she was irreplaceable. This being because a kid actor who has to speak with the performance is, to me, automatically compared to Dafne Keen in Logan. When I compared the two performances, Keen’s performance kills the other girls performance, she did do a good job but didn’t shine as much as Keen did in Logan for a child actor. Lastly, I would have to say that Battle for the Planet of the Apes would’ve been a better title because war isn’t the main focus of the story, more like a significant part in the third act that the movie led to.

The last little problem I had with this movie was the act of a good human character in the movie. Don’t get me wrong, I love being with Caesar more than with humans. But, in the first two, you saw certain human characters that made the decision of siding with either the apes or humans harder for me as I was watching the movies. In this movie, it is a little more black and white on who you should side with because there aren’t any humans that you see have compassion for the apes and try to help them besides the little girl. The story could’ve benefited just from a simple look of a soldier that thinks maybe what they’re doing is wrong.

I don’t want to go into huge depth about the movie because I want you to experience the movie yourself. All I say is that War for the Planet of the Apes is a masterpiece of a movie and gives you the conclusion to what now will be considered the best trilogy of the decade. You connect with Caesar more than ever, the story is investing and the performances are all great. Along with being a great action movie, the drama is in the forefront and is a great thought provoking movie.

It is very rare that a modern film trilogy doesn’t have a bad entry in the series but it is even rarer that every film in the series is brilliant in its own right. Any fears of the last part of the trilogy being a let down were quickly squashed as the critics gave high praise to the summer’s best intellectual blockbuster.

In War for the Planet of the Apes, we rejoin Caesar and his apes as they are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a merciless Colonel. After the ape family suffer unthinkable losses, Caesar struggles with his darker instincts and his ideas for vengeance against humankind. As the ape’s epic journey brings Caesar and the Colonel face to face, they are drawn into a monumental battle that will determine the fate of the planet.

Not a single frame is wasted by director Matt Reeves. The film is full of stunning cinematography from start to finish; with dazzling sets and locations which transport you deep into the middle of the ape’s world. War for the Planet of the Apes has probably the best use of CGI and motion capture ever committed to film. Caesar’s character has been rapidly developing throughout the series and now in the close ups, you can clearly see Andy Serkis in there more than ever before. All of his facial expressions are realised and you feel exactly how he is feeling. Caesar has become mythical himself and will go down as one of the most compelling characters in modern cinema.

The stunning musical score by Michael Giacchino is completely wonderful. It heightens the experience, enhances moments of silence, captures the tension and suspense and overall suits the material to a T. Giacchino is quickly cementing himself as one of the all time great film score composers.

Like the other previous entries, there are many Easter-eggs and links to the series. But this time the links are much more accessible to casual fans. The script expertly sets up the state of the humans in the original 1968 film while also setting up one of the original characters in a charming way.

There is much-needed humour injected into the film with the addition of the new character Bad Ape. Throughout the film’s sombre tone and dark setting, he provides some uplift. While being a hilarious and endearing character, he also surprisingly gives some of the most touching moments.

War for the Planet of the Apes is a stunning conclusion to Caesar’s story but also an incredible film in its own right. It’s the completion of a masterful trilogy which works extremely well as a whole story linking together. The Apes prequel series can now be added to the list of the greatest film trilogies of all time after pulling off the near impossible of not featuring one bad film.

It may not be the bombastically action-packed finale that would be expected from a title like "War for the Planet of the Apes," but this film finishes the Apes origins saga in a way that's far more gripping, intelligent, and thought-provoking than a blockbuster could ever be expected to be.

Caesar ought to be cemented as one of cinema's most memorable characters. This movie completes his arc so powerfully as he--for the first time in the trilogy--confronts his demons and learns what it truly means to lead. The motion-capture is perhaps the best ever put to film as the apes' emotions are so effectively portrayed. Caesar is old, tired, and battle-hardened, as are his primate companions, and it shows. The human characters here are also arguably the best of the three films as the morality of all sides of the conflict are explored. Rather than painting this war as a black-and-white good ape vs. evil human sort of struggle, the story shows it to be a psychological war. It's a deeply complex political tragedy where evil deeds are done with the best intentions. It's thought-provoking in a way that is rarely seen in cinema today

Although it is the most effective of the trilogy, War does suffer from some very sluggish pacing. Slow-burning stories are not always bad, but this one does not have enough locations or differing events to keep it engaging throughout the entire runtime. The dialogue is sufficiently intelligent to mostly make up for it, but the film seems to end in a disappointingly abrupt way that doesn't quite serve as a payoff for the long, bleak drama that led up to it.

Nitpicks aside, War for the Planet of the Apes is an emotionally exhausting sci-fi tale that adds the perfect cap to the provocative themes and poignant character arcs of its predecessors and makes this trilogy one of the best sci-fi series ever put to screen.

Unlike many trilogies though this third film actually comes out as the best in my opinion. The film features an oscar worthy performance by Andy Serkis as the ape protagonist Caesar, great characters (new and old), a powerful message, engaging action, stunning directing, a beautiful soundtrack, and inarguably the best CG effects and motion capture in a film to date. My only nitpick is a somewhat slow second act in comparison to the great first and third acts. Overall, War for the Planet of the Apes is arguably the best movie of the summer, best of the Planet of the Apes movies, and even the best of the year so far. Expand

I am so blown-away by this series. I get so into it, like "Yes, apes - crush the humans!!" Andy Serkis is like one of my favorite actors. I never think they'll be able to come up with a new one that's as good as the first, but they keep doing it.

The effects are as impressive and engaging as ever, the story is gripping and has plenty of heart and emotion, which many of us have come to expect from this trilogy, and the acting from both human and ape is stellar, with Andy Serkis delivering outstanding work as usual as Caesar. Woody Harrelson is also notable in his villainous turn. Overall, it's undoubtedly exciting, full of heart, and concludes things rather satisfyingly, but by the end, I still found myself preferring the middle chapter (Dawn) slightly more. Nonetheless, this film is right behind that one in my opinion and I couldn't have asked for a stronger or more satisfying conclusion to this solid and memorable trilogy! Expand

Planet of the Apes is a trilogy of prequels I never expected to love but with each and every movie the story gets better and better. The tone changes and now we’re here. The darkest of the three. War. And make no mistake this is very much a war movie throughout, the relationship between humans and apes beyond the breaking point. It’s violent, intense and complete with a powerful soundtrack. If you’re a fan of the previous movies then under no circumstance should you miss this. Andy Serkis has well and truly established himself as a master of motion capture. His performance is captivating, Caesar is up there with Gollum and King Kong. I could go on and on so somebody please just give the man an Oscar already. Highly recommended and if you can wait patiently like I didn’t make sure to catch it in 2D not 3D. One of the best trilogies you’ll ever watch. Expand

This film is not about war, it's about revenge, about survival. The first part of the rebooted franchise came out wonderful, the second turned into a movie about war and has lost a lot in the story and the characters. The third part of the work done on the bugs. It's not a massive blockbuster about the war, but rather a drama. This is not a mindless summer movie, there is a very strong story. Revenge, survival, family, decisions — that's what the movie's about. Caesar for the third time beautifully played by Andy Serkis. Nowadays technology has reached the point that we can see the smallest emotions on the faces of the computer model, and Andy Serkis is laid out! You believe him, sorry and worried about him. We watched Caesar from infancy, his character developed before our eyes. Therefore, in order to better emotionally to feel the movie you need to watch the previous two. The finale for this character, the most correct that could be. Other monkeys, too, you remember, and worry about, it would seem that computer models, like the real people. There are no unnecessary characters, unlike the second part, and each is remembered. Antagonist of Caesar was played by equally talented Woody Harrelson. For the trailers, I thought it would be flat evil villain, and Woody Harrelson is here so he pressed his charisma. But all went not so. Yes, he is charismatic and looks cool, but he can play, his character is not so simple, and it will be a strong scene. This film is surprising. To view it you think you know everything beforehand, that's just typical opposition of brave Americans, only now against the monkeys, not the Russians or other enemies. I think that there will not be strong characters, and the whole film will occupy the shooting and explosions. But it's not. It's a smart movie, touching. In the plot, "War for the Planet of the Apes" and gives us plot twists. You don't know what will happen next, I don't know what the outcome of this story. While similar, predictable movies it's really worth it. The film is amazing. It is beautiful, and you can't see where the graphics are, and where nature. But Director Matt Reeves has shown his talent. If the Director can make you cry an over drawn by monkeys, he has the talent. The few, the chamber of the battle scenes is also shot nice. But the film is not about that. There is no war here, here the confrontation of two charismatic representatives of the two types. Each of them wants to survive, and empathize with both man and the apes. Because both those and others there is a strong motivation. "War for the Planet of the Apes" is for me the movie was a surprise. I got more than expected and it is wonderful! This film carries the thought. It's not just a pretty shell, it is filling and tasty. Expand

This isWar of the planet of the Apes was a great conclusion to this Ape trilogy, and a must see for fans of the series. The heart and dedication to detail that went into the motion capture of the apes, is the best cinema has to offer. This is partly due to the amazing performance given by Andy Serkis as the main protagonist Caesar and the rest of the ape cast. When I first watched the prequel film back in 2011, I was a little biased as I wasn’t a fan of the Tim Burton remake that came prior to its release. I am so glad I took a chance on this reimaging of the series, as I was shocked at the depth of these films. Matt Reeves and writers took a series that can come across as extremely campy, and turned it into a modern day epic. The story of Caesar and his apes is one of the most compelling trilogies I have ever watched. I highly recommend watching this trilogy in its entirety as the weight of some early consequences echo through to the later films. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A fitting and altogether satisfying conclusion to the new Apes trilogy and the most complete and thematically satisfying one yet. Harrelson is a pure nutjob villain but he at least starts to hint at the some of the broader questions the characters in this universe should be asking more of - namely what does this do to the evolutionary ladder/food chain and what exactly does it mean for God and souls? (this still gets short shrift, probably to avoid alienating audiences). He sees himself as a messiah delivering the human race from a scourge of its own making - he doesn't seem to hate the apes so much as understand objectively what they mean for the human race. He's more complex this way.

There are some homages to the original Planet here too - the little girl is named Nova and the flu has mutated causing humans to become less intelligent (this is not what is meant in the original film but sure - it does can explain why humans don't fight back and can't read). Some of the final scenes are a little too on the nose and ham-handed. Caesar as the real messiah leading his people to the promised land. The gorilla that finally turns good at the end (this scene could have worked but is dumb in execution - Caesar almost dies anyway). The apes survive an avalanche because they climb trees - this is what is meant by an evolutionary advantage apparently. Between that, the mutated flu and the old version of it, this explains how the Planet becomes one of Apes. It works but feels a bit over-engineered.

I really appreciate how this trilogy of Apes films is a character and theme based work first. These films use state of the art CGI in order to create more believable characters and tell a tale not possible any other way (I mean, yeah makeup, which I do miss, but still for the new films this is what works). There aren't many overblown action scenes that dominate and wear down the film. This is what franchise big budget moviemaking should look like.

Flying audaicuously above the need for explosions, gunshots, and giant, CGI-laden set pieces to help tell its story, "War For The Planet Of The Apes" - much like how this year's "Logan" was so different from other comic book movies - sets itself apart from other, more traditional "summer blockbusters" by simply having a good story at its heart that's sopping wet in its director's own, unique vision. Featuring a stunning lead performance from Andy Serkis and some truly taut, PG-13-film-tropes-be-damned drama, this piece really is the sendoff that this noteworthy franchise deserved and needed. The entire movie is top-notch quality. The writing was fairly predictable, but it had its moments that shine. Especially how they give the Apes more human or emotional qualities so that you can relate to their struggle. Its a little odd, that by the time the movie is finished, you're wishing for humanity's (or at least the antagonist's) death. The movie does end well, but seems as though there needed to be a transition towards the old movies. (I know enough to remember that the old ones take place way into the future)

Now that I've officially seen one of the films, it has piqued my interest into watching the rest. Good flick and only falls short, with there being too much focus on drama and less on action. After all, this movie is called "WAR for the Planet of the Apes".

Because War For The Planet Of The Apes, aside from being the best movie of this rebooted extravaganza, has shown me things i didn't expect a reboot could do,and that is being a magnificent,if not also emotional, conclusion of the trilogy. The story is probably one the more serious i saw in a long time, with unexpectedly poignant moments and some of the most remarkable action scenes of 2017. With each passing year, the motion capture gets phenomenal every time, and so does this one, being a little bit more detailed. The acting was terrific: Andy Serkis as Caesar is strong as always,Woody Harrelson as the nefarious Colonel is,well, nefarious, and luckily,Steve Zahn as Bad Ape didn't ruin the movie. You could have some funny moments here and there, but honestly,i expected worse. And let's not forget about the astounding score by Michael Giacchino...I can talk for hours about that piece of musical wonder. I was also impressed by how the cinematography worked in this movie. In the end,if you thought Logan was the best movie of the year, well, you can think again. War For The Planet Of The Apes is a delightful conclusion to an already solid trilogy, with breathtaking visual effects,an unexpectedly dark and poignant story and a score by Michael Giacchino that puts the webhead in silence (and that will probably become part of your nightmares...) War for the Planet of the Apes is a film loaded with dramatic, emotional and action moments making a balance rarely seen before in film history. The story is much deeper than the title "War" presents us as it is not limited to show us absurd fights and explosions but on the contrary, gives us a small dose of action and most of the story is a War but an internal war mainly that undergoes Ceasar, who is magnificently interpreted by Andy Serkis. Finally, excellent story, magnificent performance and direction, music at the level of the tape, action dose, drama and emotion, hyper-realistic CGI technology, evolving to the level of each tape of this renewed franchise, which closes with a touch of gold this acclaimed prequel. A visual and emotional show unique in its kind, which will not be so valued in these times but that over the years will become cult films. Expand

This film seemed more of an allegory with the problems of humanity rather than a war per-se. Overall well done, but there were far too many movie tropes as well an underwhelming third act. I left feeling that there should have been more.

The first half hour is breathtaking. The cinematography is crazy (special mention to the shots with the apes and the girl riding horses on the beach). Tense start of the film. The first encounter between Caesar and the coronel comes so soon and is so explosive. Then the pacing becomes slower, but never boring, in an attempt at explaining things and develop the story. By the time the film ends one is an emotional mess. It is the perfect closure to the trilogy that also gives space to more stories, but don´t worry, it is an ending. In all senses. A tremendous journey for an oppressed group of sentient beings that earn their freedom. Tremendous. The level of detail of the film is pretty amazing too. And it also has a nice reminder of what the old films gave us when it comes to humans (I had totally forgoten than in the old Planet films humans didn´t...). The apes seem more real than ever. It´s absolutely breathtaking. This time, I would consider the film for an oscar nomination even if with no chances. Andy Sherkins would probably deserve a nomination too. Score very on point too. Like I said, the ending is deserving of getting emotional for all the right reasons. Earned. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As much as certain elements of this film were truly above and beyond, I definitely feel like Dawn (the previous movie) was better. It was quite disappointing that there wasn't even a war between the humans and the apes. Also, the "epic" ape dialogue in it was even more obviously mundane sentences slowed down for dramatic effect. The CGI was great and the story overall was well done but I honestly enjoyed this movie around a 7.5/10 score due to its shortcomings. Still worth a watch for sure, though. Expand

Those types of films are timeless masterpieces that move you infinitely and change you after witnessing their triumphant immensity. I can assure you, War For The Planet Of The Apes belongs in that untouchable/unrateable category imo. When this prequel franchise started in 2011, I was intrigued yet somewhat cautious at the time. After witnessing Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, I was thoroughly impressed but yearning for more action as it was more of an intro and development into Caesar's character and the franchise overall and when looking back, it needed to be slower in that aspect for plotting/franchise building. Then in 2014 when Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes blew my expectations away with fast paced intensity, insane action sequences, as well as some very emotional dramatic moments, I hailed it as one of the best films to come out in quite some time which i still believe true. Koba's character was one of the best villain portrayals I've ever seen, and Andy Serkis as Ceasar was impeccable as he is in everything he does. Enter 2017 with War For The Planet Of The Apes as the epic finale to the trilogy. From the beginning to end it is the epitome of an emotionally triumphant journey full of twists and turns along the way with every single emotion and feeling you can experience as a viewer. Every shot and every scene was executed flawlessly and acted to perfection. It's the most beautifully scenic film I've seen with a wide array of visuals ranging from mountains, wilderness, and tragedy. The CGI and motion capture work on the apes is the best and most realistic of all time without question. Andy Serkis proves once again that he could quite possibly be the greatest yet one of the most unknown actors ever playing the role of the iconic Caesar. The soundtrack is completely and utterly fantastic and sets the sonic tone throughout in an homage manner to the original films. There is an amazing dichotomy between what's animal and what's human in morality throughout and it was fascinating. All in all this phenomenal classic conclusion encapsulates this particular rise/dawn/war ape trilogy as one of the greatest if not the greatest of all time. A harrowing and adventurous tale of unity and honor through all obstacles, staying strong together. APES TOGETHER STRONG!!! Expand

Despite having the title "War for the Planet of the Apes" there really isn't much "War" going on.

Whatever you do, do NOT go to this movie expecting gun shots and explosions every five seconds, because what lies beneath is a very mellow, character driven story thrown together with doses of humor and brief moments of effects driven action. Despite what the title would have you think, this is a very quiet and somber film, with a cold tone to represent humanity in this world of apes vs humans. There are loud moments for sure. Scenes with helicopters shooting stuff and things blowing up. Mostly though, there are heart felt character moments where you really feel the pain of the film's main protagonist, Caesar. On that level, the film succeeds.

The reboot launch from 2011, "Rise" (10 rating here, and best movie of the year) was excellent because it was a compelling, very clever origin prequel and it had something called dynamics: big story arc, variety of locations and scenery, unpredictability despite the audience knowing where ultimately it was leading, and a wildly good action climax while not totally original, about as much so as these franchise tent pole Hollywood blockbusters get these days. The follow up, "Dawn" (8 rating here) was very good, but not as clever or dynamic as it was a more typical dystopian sci-fi entry lodged in the same dark muddy woods most of the picture. What it had in spades was suspenseful moral conflict making it highly watchable.
Now "War" is just more of the same but not nearly as well plotted, original or unpredictable. It's another overlong slog put out by passionless, spineless studio execs who no longer challenge self-indulgent directors! Its formal filmmaking style is welcome and the VFX are good once again but nothing amazing or visibly new.

Much better than I expected. I didn't want to see another war movie even if it was apes and humans killing each other non-stop. A much more resonant story unfolds than my expectation.

I practice using Josh Whedon's rubric of "which genre does the script draw its power from?" In this case Matt Reves draws on three movie genres/stories: Apocalypse now war movies, Sergio Leone/Kurosawa western movies and the Bible story of Moses leading his people out of Egypt to the promised land. Matt says almost as much in the first half hour of the director's commentary. What makes this possible to cement the power from three different genre sources into one script is finding the emotional richness in each scene, in the shooting process and enhancing the emotional richness in the editing-revising. Matt talks about this in the director's commentary also. Quite a striking writing-directing effort, high art.
