Caesar (Andy Serkis) and the simian community are hiding in the San Francisco woods as the humans close in on them. After an attempt at peace fails, Caesar embarks on a personal mission of vengeance against the human leader, The Colonel (Woody Harrelson), leaving his community behind and accompanied by his closest allies. The film, directed by Matt Reeves and written by Mark Bomback, takes a more introspective approach, focusing on Caesar's internal struggles and sidestepping the pitfalls of previous trilogy closers by not relying on action and spectacle. The stunning imagery, mind-blowing CGI/motion capture, and a powerful score by Michael Giacchino, all contribute to making the film an astounding visual and auditory experience. Andy Serkis delivers a standout performance, and Woody Harrelson is also noteworthy as the Colonel. While the pacing of the film may drag in the second half, and some characters may take time to warm up to, "War for the Planet of the Apes" is a thought-provoking and emotionally-charged film that brings the trilogy to a satisfying conclusion.

"War for the Planet of the Apes" es la tercera entrega de la franquicia reiniciada, ambientada dos años después de los eventos de "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes".

'War for the Planet of the Apes' wraps up a great trilogy strongly.

I enjoyed this installment just as much as its two predecessors, all three films are just supremely entertaining and are very well put together. Caesar is a terrific character and continues to look fantastic in this; the special effects are top notch, even the way the apes are shown in shot is expertly done. The additions of Bad Ape and Nova are neat, too.

I'd personally rank it above 'Dawn' but below 'Rise', though there isn't much between them at all. Intrigued to see where they go with the proposed spin-off(s).

A fine conclusion to this re-booted franchise. For what is in the main an action movie there is a fair amount of depth and character development going on.

There are a lot of heavy, dramatic sequences and I would say this movie compromises entertainment for meaningful content. Everything serves the characters and story. This movie has death, suffering, plight, heroism and empathy. The effects are astonishing..

Apparently this movie requires an active viewer. A person actually has to show up, absorb the content of a film that will not pander to, "give me action" needs. It is surprising to me that the third film in this trilogy would improve so much on the previous two films.

The music both blends in and adds to the drama/action. Beautiful camera work in interesting locations, and several unique characters. This movie is full of great character building, and all the big moments really land where they should.

Overall, you should watch it for yourself and shouldn't believe in negative reviews. Those who gave negative reviews to this movie are those who wanted only fight/ action scenes and those who don't have knowledge of pure cinema.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The third installment of the Planet of the Apes trilogy prequel, War for the Planet of the Apes, is the perfect way to end the trilogy. Sure, Dawn (the previous film) was hard to follow, but this film held on its own. The film now focuses more on the side of the Apes, with Caesar on his quest to avenge his son and wife. The cinematography was indeed amazing, however, there were too many plot holes. One of them was the Simian flu, which was mentioned but was not elaborated well, as the focus was more on the side of the Apes. Andy Serkis' performance was amazing. Woody Harrelson's character was underwritten and unexplored. Focusing on the Apes was not a strong move, and it made the film one-sided, unlike the previous films. But overall, this still is an enjoyable film, and a perfect way to close such an amazing trilogy. Expand

Any fears of the last part of the trilogy being a let down were quickly squashed as the critics gave high praise to the summer’s best intellectual blockbuster.

In War for the Planet of the Apes, we rejoin Caesar and his apes as they are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a merciless Colonel. After the ape family suffer unthinkable losses, Caesar struggles with his darker instincts and his ideas for vengeance against humankind. As the ape’s epic journey brings Caesar and the Colonel face to face, they are drawn into a monumental battle that will determine the fate of the planet.

Not a single frame is wasted by director Matt Reeves. The film is full of stunning cinematography from start to finish; with dazzling sets and locations which transport you deep into the middle of the ape’s world. War for the Planet of the Apes has probably the best use of CGI and motion capture ever committed to film. Caesar’s character has been rapidly developing throughout the series and now in the close ups, you can clearly see Andy Serkis in there more than ever before. All of his facial expressions are realised and you feel exactly how he is feeling. Caesar has become mythical himself and will go down as one of the most compelling characters in modern cinema.

The stunning musical score by Michael Giacchino is completely wonderful. It heightens the experience, enhances moments of silence, captures the tension and suspense and overall suits the material to a T. Giacchino is quickly cementing himself as one of the all time great film score composers.

Like the other previous entries, there are many Easter-eggs and links to the series. But this time the links are much more accessible to casual fans. The script expertly sets up the state of the humans in the original 1968 film while also setting up one of the original characters in a charming way.

There is much-needed humour injected into the film with the addition of the new character Bad Ape. Throughout the film’s sombre tone and dark setting, he provides some uplift. While being a hilarious and endearing character, he also surprisingly gives some of the most touching moments.

War for the Planet of the Apes is a stunning conclusion to Caesar’s story but also an incredible film in its own right. It’s the completion of a masterful trilogy which works extremely well as a whole story linking together. The Apes prequel series can now be added to the list of the greatest film trilogies of all time after pulling off the near impossible of not featuring one bad film.

Even theFor starters, this movie is a technological marvel and will hold up for years to come. The CGI of the apes is nothing short of amazing and you never think it’s CGI, you believe those are actual animals with personalities. Even the camerawork makes it even more believable, because you get close ups of these apes and the apes don’t look any less believable which is very hard to do with CGI. The use of real sets and how seamlessly it blends with the CGI is another marvel because in many movies today I can easily see were CGI has been placed, but this movie does a marvelous job of using both practical and digital affects.

Lastly, the king of motion capture, the man, the myth, the legend Andy Serkis! What else can I say about this man that hasn’t already been said about him in these movies. The man gives another Oscar worthy performance as Caesar and shows a totally different dynamic of the character. You see through his performance that Caesar is in a totally different place and has just had it with settling with the humans and fights only to protect his kind. Andy Serkis brings this character to life yet again through his great emotional movements and expressions he brings to life as the king of motion capture. You also see Andy Serkis bring all new, damaged, aspects of the character. You see Caesar still trying to cope with the events of Dawn that Koba caused and him still thinking about what could’ve been if they didn’t happen. You also see a scene where Caesar make a decision that goes against all of his ideals, but you find a way to agree with this decision, and Caesar acknowledges that it’s his own flaw. Andy Serkis deserves an Oscar nomination for this performance, while he probably won’t get one he solidifies himself as one of the best actors in the business. Andy Serkis will forever be the king of all apes only known as Ceasar.

I thought that this movie was a compete masterpiece, but I did have to nitpick some things for the sake of this review. To start off, towards the end while the apes are attempting a mission a lot of conveniences happened so the plan is taking shape. While that cliche is used in almost every movie, it was a little too obvious while I watching the movie. Secondly, the little girl in the movie, while she did a fine job I couldn’t say she was irreplaceable. This being because a kid actor who has to speak with the performance is, to me, automatically compared to Dafne Keen in Logan. When I compared the two performances, Keen’s performance kills the other girls performance, she did do a good job but didn’t shine as much as Keen did in Logan for a child actor. Lastly, I would have to say that Battle for the Planet of the Apes would’ve been a better title because war isn’t the main focus of the story, more like a significant part in the third act that the movie led to.

The last little problem I had with this movie was the act of a good human character in the movie. Don’t get me wrong, I love being with Caesar more than with humans. But, in the first two, you saw certain human characters that made the decision of siding with either the apes or humans harder for me as I was watching the movies. In this movie, it is a little more black and white on who you should side with because there aren’t any humans that you see have compassion for the apes and try to help them besides the little girl. The story could’ve benefited just from a simple look of a soldier that thinks maybe what they’re doing is wrong.

I don’t want to go into huge depth about the movie because I want you to experience the movie yourself. All I say is that War for the Planet of the Apes is a masterpiece of a movie and gives you the conclusion to what now will be considered the best trilogy of the decade. You connect with Caesar more than ever, the story is investing and the performances are all great. Along with being a great action movie, the drama is in the forefront and is a great thought provoking movie.

Cesar Vs Mechant.

Much better than I expected. I didn't want to see another war movie even if it was apes and humans killing each other non-stop. A much more resonant story unfolds than my expectation.

I practice using Josh Whedon's rubric of "which genre does the script draw its power from?" In this case Matt Reves draws on three movie genres/stories: Apocalypse now war movies, Sergio Leone/Kurosawa western movies and the Bible story of Moses leading his people out of Egypt to the promised land. Matt says almost as much in the first half hour of the director's commentary. What makes this possible to cement the power from three different genre sources into one script is finding the emotional richness in each scene, in the shooting process and enhancing the emotional richness in the editing-revising. Matt talks about this in the director's commentary also. Quite a striking writing-directing effort, high art.

It may not be the bombastically action-packed finale that would be expected from a title like "War for the Planet of the Apes," but this film finishes the Apes origins saga in a way that's far more gripping, intelligent, and thought-provoking than a blockbuster could ever be expected to be.

Caesar ought to be cemented as one of cinema's most memorable characters. This movie completes his arc so powerfully as he--for the first time in the trilogy--confronts his demons and learns what it truly means to lead. The motion-capture is perhaps the best ever put to film as the apes' emotions are so effectively portrayed. Caesar is old, tired, and battle-hardened, as are his primate companions, and it shows. The human characters here are also arguably the best of the three films as the morality of all sides of the conflict are explored. Rather than painting this war as a black-and-white good ape vs. evil human sort of struggle, the story shows it to be a psychological war. It's a deeply complex political tragedy where evil deeds are done with the best intentions. It's thought-provoking in a way that is rarely seen in cinema today

Although it is the most effective of the trilogy, War does suffer from some very sluggish pacing. Slow-burning stories are not always bad, but this one does not have enough locations or differing events to keep it engaging throughout the entire runtime. The dialogue is sufficiently intelligent to mostly make up for it, but the film seems to end in a disappointingly abrupt way that doesn't quite serve as a payoff for the long, bleak drama that led up to it.

Nitpicks aside, War for the Planet of the Apes is an emotionally exhausting sci-fi tale that adds the perfect cap to the provocative themes and poignant character arcs of its predecessors and makes this trilogy one of the best sci-fi series ever put to screen.

How do they make me get so many feels for CGI apes? How?

I won't go into a lot of details about the plot of the movie itself. I will say however that the trailers are misleading... as in a lot misleading. Don't get me wrong, there is action, there is adventure, there is laughter and sadness. Yes that little girl is in the movie and she has an impactful role, but it isn't what the trailer implies.

Woody Harrelson does awesome as the cray cray commander of the humans. The fact that he emotes so well with a CGI character just means he is as good as I remember him.

The movie itself I doubt will win any Oscars except maybe for effects, and probably not that with so many Marvel/Star Wars movies this year. However, it is good enough that I didn't get dragged out of my suspension of belief. Also, this movie is a great way to wrap up the trilogy, and sets it up for future movies if they want.

Oh, and don't mind the tears, the husband is cutting onions.

The good: Almost everything is good, especially if you watch it as what it is, a Planet of the Apes movie. Acting, effects, story, etc. It is a great journey into the world of the Apes, and I definitely could come back to it.

The bad: Seriously though, attack choppers don't do strafing runs normally. They are quite capable of standing off in a distance and laying down death. Just saying that was my one annoyance (and probably one break from suspension of disbelief).

But these are apes.. with the same wants, needs and interests as humans. Survival and existence without predatory threats. The action, acting and special effects are flawless. The plot was lacking some direction at times... and the villain...woody harrelson... was a bit conflicted ... which we will never know what his deal truly was. Was it Militarily centered... or some biological issue that the film sort of touched on? I guess we will never know. other than that.. good time on the couch. Expand

Besides it being funny it has a ton of emotion and significant character moments. Caesar's death at the end was a great and satisfying way to close the book on the trilogy. One of the best movies of 2017.

The first half hour is breathtaking. The cinematography is crazy (special mention to the shots with the apes and the girl riding horses on the beach). Tense start of the film. The first encounter between Caesar and the coronel comes so soon and is so explosive. Then the pacing becomes slower, but never boring, in an attempt at explaining things and develop the story. By the time the film ends one is an emotional mess. It is the perfect closure to the trilogy that also gives space to more stories, but don´t worry, it is an ending. In all senses. A tremendous journey for an oppressed group of sentient beings that earn their freedom. Tremendous. The level of detail of the film is pretty amazing too. And it also has a nice reminder of what the old films gave us when it comes to humans (I had totally forgoten than in the old Planet films humans didn´t...). The apes seem more real than ever. It´s absolutely breathtaking. This time, I would consider the film for an oscar nomination even if with no chances. Andy Sherkins would probably deserve a nomination too. Score very on point too. Like I said, the ending is deserving of getting emotional for all the right reasons. Earned. Expand

This is Reeves' Ape series at it's most emotional and powerful. The performances and motion capture are still in top form. There's even Steve Zahn this time around to give Andy Serkis a run for his money in both categories. It's got the bombastic energy of an action film, the brutality of a serious war movie, and the heart and soul of a compelling human drama. This conclusion to the Reeves trilogy is excellent and hands down the best of the reboots. While the door is left open for more to potentially come from the series in the future, War is good enough to serve as the conclusion of the Apes films. It's satisfying and a whole heck of a lot deeper than what typically comes to theaters these days. It does a lot you wouldn't expect. The one sour note is that Woody Harrelson's villain feel a bit underused. Yet, he's still given a satisfying arc. This has been one heck of a ride.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A fitting and altogether satisfying conclusion to the new Apes trilogy and the most complete and thematically satisfying one yet. Harrelson is a pure nutjob villain but he at least starts to hint at the some of the broader questions the characters in this universe should be asking more of - namely what does this do to the evolutionary ladder/food chain and what exactly does it mean for God and souls? (this still gets short shrift, probably to avoid alienating audiences). He sees himself as a messiah delivering the human race from a scourge of its own making - he doesn't seem to hate the apes so much as understand objectively what they mean for the human race. He's more complex this way.

There are some homages to the original Planet here too - the little girl is named Nova and the flu has mutated causing humans to become less intelligent (this is not what is meant in the original film but sure - it does can explain why humans don't fight back and can't read). Some of the final scenes are a little too on the nose and ham-handed. Caesar as the real messiah leading his people to the promised land. The gorilla that finally turns good at the end (this scene could have worked but is dumb in execution - Caesar almost dies anyway). The apes survive an avalanche because they climb trees - this is what is meant by an evolutionary advantage apparently. Between that, the mutated flu and the old version of it, this explains how the Planet becomes one of Apes. It works but feels a bit over-engineered.

I really appreciate how this trilogy of Apes films is a character and theme based work first. These films use state of the art CGI in order to create more believable characters and tell a tale not possible any other way (I mean, yeah makeup, which I do miss, but still for the new films this is what works). There aren't many overblown action scenes that dominate and wear down the film. This is what franchise big budget moviemaking should look like.

Flying audaicuously above the need for explosions, gunshots, and giant, CGI-laden set pieces to help tell its story, "War For The Planet Of The Apes" - much like how this year's "Logan" was so different from other comic book movies - sets itself apart from other, more traditional "summer blockbusters" by simply having a good story at its heart that's sopping wet in its director's own, unique vision. Dont get me wrong the ending in my opinion makes up for the horribly boring scenes in the middle. Perhaps the best reason to watch this movie is the incomparable acting by Andy Serkis, who again rises above anything else in the movie and proves to be the most essential asset of this franchise. A sweet surprise is also the direction of Matt Reeves who truly takes us back to old fashioned film making with beautiful shots and amazing performances. War for the Planet of the Apes didn't capture me like the rest of the films in the trilogy, but it still manages to be a good film even if not on the same level of its predecessors. Unlike Rise or Dawn that tackled current topics in the worldWar for the Planet of the Apes didn't capture me like the rest of the films in the trilogy, but it still manages to be a good film even if not on the same level of its predecessors. Unlike Rise or Dawn that tackled current topics in the world like gun control, War makes symbolic references to the bible and slavery. These aren't subtle references either they're very obvious instead unlike Dawn's were with gun control. This movie also tries to add humor into a series of movies that never really touched humor to begin with. This in turn makes the jokes fall flat, and they rely on one ape that just turns out to be more annoying than funny. There's one thing for sure though, and that is the apes in this movie have never looked so good. The CGI in this film is worth the price of admission alone. Andy Serkis and Woody Harrelson do a fantastic job as the leads in this movie, and you can really feel the tension when these two leaders interact with each other on screen. In the end War for the Planet of the Apes acts as the "swan song" in Cesar's journey. Although it didn't reach the heights of its predecessors it is still a fitting conclusion to one of the best movie trilogies of the decade. Expand

Characters are great, story is great, directing and acting are awesome. It's not all good though, the ending feels lazy, and (sort of personal grudge) while the movie spends a lot of time setting up the original 1968 film, it won't go so far as to destroy the statue of liberty. Also the trailers sell a war, and the movie delivers a stealth mission, so the pacing feels off and the movie feels really slow even though it's not. Bottom line, don't expect action/war movie. The CGI is absolutely astonishing, and has improved greatly in the six years since the original. Of course this helps make the action sequences look all the more realistic but it also allows the actors playing the motion captured roles to give real performances, and Andy Serkis in particular deserves to win an Oscar for his performance as Caesar. Nuanced director Matt Reeves has constructed a beautiful character arc that manages to juggle both drama and intense action perfectly. The power and emotion is there, of course, full volume, and Serkis is bound to win every award possible for his portrayal of Caesar. All other performances are brilliant as well, the music is incredible, the visuals stunning, and the characters utterly heartbreaking. A wondrous end, yet one that still seems to make us want more. It surely is a good finishing for the Planet of the Apes trilogy. Andy Serkis and other actors did brilliant job on Performance Capture and they do deserve highest of awards.

It's gripping story gives rise to possibilities of more franchises in the world of Planet of the Apes than ending the story. I was lucky enough to catch the Dhaka Premier of this film, and experienced it on Dolby Atmos hall, it was amazing, I had a great time, specially the fight and battle scenes although not very long. I loved it and I would suggest all to watch this film.

All hail Caesar!

This one puts even more emphasis on the drama, almost to the exclusion of any big battles. Caesar fights back against a human army (led by Woody Harrelson), but there's more heart-felt conversation and sneaking around than full out fighting. That being said, the animation of the apes is even more impressively effective in conveying emotions (led by another remarkable performance from Andy Serkis). While much of the interactions are compelling, almost every scene plays out too long. Once again, Michael Seresin's cinematography turns some stunning locations into beautiful images and the simian characterizations are enthralling. While Matt Reeves' distinctive directorial vision is engrossing and at times unique, it's more about emotion than action. (This much ape interaction means lots of subtitles to translate their hairy gestures.) Expand

This film seemed more of an allegory with the problems of humanity rather than a war per-se. Overall well done, but there were far too many movie tropes as well an underwhelming third act. I left feeling that there should have been more.

Despite having the title "War for the Planet of the Apes" there really isn't much "War" going on.

Whatever you do, do NOT go to this movie expecting gun shots and explosions every five seconds, because what lies beneath is a very mellow, character driven story thrown together with doses of humor and brief moments of effects driven action. Despite what the title would have you think, this is a very quiet and somber film, with a cold tone to represent humanity in this world of apes vs humans. There are loud moments for sure. Scenes with helicopters shooting stuff and things blowing up. Mostly though, there are heart felt character moments where you really feel the pain of the film's main protagonist, Caesar. On that level, the film succeeds.

The effects are as impressive and engaging as ever, the story is gripping and has plenty of heart and emotion, which many of us have come to expect from this trilogy, and the acting from both human and ape is stellar, with Andy Serkis delivering outstanding work as usual as Caesar. Woody Harrelson is also notable in his villainous turn. Overall, it's undoubtedly exciting, full of heart, and concludes things rather satisfyingly, but by the end, I still found myself preferring the middle chapter (Dawn) slightly more. Nonetheless, this film is right behind that one in my opinion and I couldn't have asked for a stronger or more satisfying conclusion to this solid and memorable trilogy! Expand
