First of all, there is no introduction to the situation in India at the time of the British withdrawal. If you do not know anything about the era, and I didn’t, the film is extremely dull and just a lot of pretty sets and costumes with an interesting, although somewhat forced performance by Gillian Anderson. The film becomes a little more interesting towards the end when you find out how Churchill duped Mountbatten, but the Indian love story falls flat. I was eager to learn or to be entertained by this film, but I was just very bored. By the way, Mountbatten and his wife had very colorful personal lives, but none of that was hinted at in this film because the director/screenwriter had her own agenda, which overwhelmed any respect for or attention to her audience. However, I did come away with even greater respect for the talents of Indian actors. Expand
