Well done. Impossible to do the subject justice in one film but what was done was informative and well done.

However, the mix of religious cultures and political machinations resulted in one of the country's great tragedies. This is a fascinating epic that's presented with long, dry debates and a trite romance that's supposed to add heart. The locale is impressive and the scope is grand, but there's too much effort to present all sides of the issues. It's essentially dull until the final post-independence sequence, which brings the full effect of the tragedy to the fore. Only true history buffs are liable to be entertained. Expand

First of all, there is no introduction to the situation in India at the time of the British withdrawal. If you do not know anything about the era, and I didn’t, the film is extremely dull and just a lot of pretty sets and costumes with an interesting, although somewhat forced performance by Gillian Anderson. The film becomes a little more interesting towards the end when you find out how Churchill duped Mountbatten, but the Indian love story falls flat. I was eager to learn or to be entertained by this film, but I was just very bored. By the way, Mountbatten and his wife had very colorful personal lives, but none of that was hinted at in this film because the director/screenwriter had her own agenda, which overwhelmed any respect for or attention to her audience. However, I did come away with even greater respect for the talents of Indian actors. Expand
