Peele preserves the magic that show in prima opus Get out. The idea of a evil twin that came from nowhere produce enough shivers until the last minute. A plot inspired on Twilight Zone with an epilogue that tributes the Twilight Zone.

It's almost impossible not to compare with Get Out. It's almost as good as Get Out, but it felt more shallow. The amazing analogies and double meaning actions couldn't hold the hype. Also, amazing soundtrack.

The plot twist was greatly played out, however made some earlier scenes confusing and incorrect (although it may align in a second watch through) other than that the movie was generally good from the eerie music and well thought out camera angles (for most of the film) the movie although not scary brought tension and a sense of curiosity to the watcher. Overall if you are looking for a scary and adrenaline rush film this definitely isn't for you, but if you are looking for an intriguing and tension filled film requiring you to think and figure out what is going on, I definitely recommend you give this one a try. We are still recovering from when the World Trade Center was attacked. We are also still recovering from “Hands Across America.” Yeah, that “happy, lively” event advertised through cheesy commercials in truth left a nasty effect on Us. Don’t believe that accusation? Jordan Peele proves so with his newest instant-classic.

Before analyzing its brilliance, here comes a little “tough love” on the film’s poor screenplay, which is packed with coincidences. Several laughs come from the father in a Marvel fashion—that being, inappropriate comic relief thrown into serious moments. There are a couple other slightly offensive jokes that a few audience members could deem pretty dumb. It’s not just the inconsistent humor though that hinders the script’s addressed questions to our existential crisis, but too many crucial details don’t go into enough depth to make sense out of the situations; that particularly goes to the antagonists: doppelgangers of people named “shadows” who call themselves “Americans.” Where did they originally come from? It doesn’t quite explain.

In the world of regular people, little modes of affect upon the mother’s terror don’t reach their intended impact, mostly the frequent use of a man brandishing Jeremiah 11:11 on a handheld sign. It’s not clear how someone trying to play the role of a prophet isn’t warning of an upcoming tragedy that will tear the nation further apart against itself. The role of the media could particularly have been used from that free motif’s advantage to do something besides oppress our progression, but the media instead creates a poor picture of itself to raise our self-esteem, as if it’s reflecting back on those Watergate days of corrupt news outlets.

Okay, enough negativity, everything else about Jordan Peele’s new work of art projects the same disruptive power of Heaven’s Gate. The opening text informs of how North America sits above derelict underground tunnels, some without any known use, leading into a very slow dolly in at a cheerful “Hands Across America” ad on an old TV. Then comes a fearful flashback to justify the mom/protagonist’s trauma, who wanders onto the lightning-lit beach, until stuck in a maze of mirrors after the exit sign. Now, she fears Santa Cruz as her memory is overlapped by buzzing carnival music. Then the opening credits dolly out of a red, furry eye to reveal rabbits caged up to an ominous children’s choir. With the haunting intro to a true experience done with, it sparks back your permanent effects from the nation’s roller coaster history, as if any optimism the 1980s gave to counteract the 1950s-1970s has now dissipated.

The new millennium has already been no stranger to calamity, hence why we must ask ourselves, “What do we have to anticipate in the 2020’s?” Easy: A new decade, a new culture, a whole new set of expectations based on the failures of the 2010’s. The kids in this feature portray that answer, as the son, Jason, mask and magic trick in hand, finds trouble concentrating, but not as much as his sister, Zora, who stays on her phone at all times. This look of submission that the Gen Alpha characters fall victim to turns them susceptible to danger.

The mystery remains subtle enough to make Martin Scorsese proud. At first, a traumatized little girl lines up sandbox toys, then once inside a long, bleak square hallway, why she lines those toys up makes perfect sense.

It displays the media spelling out our doom based on the sound mixers’ perfect song usage. It takes little cheap trends, particularly one stick figure family focused on before the real family, to impress upon our flatness. Frustration through Dad’s humor represents humanity’s whole insecurity comparable to whenever religious groups call hurricane tragedies, “God’s wrath.” Using creepy daylight imagery of a large-scale cult, a wonderful thing turns into something scary, much like how a hurricane turns a bright, tropical vacation into death flooding around at every block.

Yet that metaphorical hurricane was actually a record-breaking fundraiser originally intended to raise up to 100 million for poverty in Africa, but only made 15 million in bank. That’s why it’s high-time Jordan Peele tells the hard truth: despite Hands Across America, “Nobody cares about the end of the world.” That’s why we need to remember that the people’s mindset tops priority over money raised; together, palm in palm, observing our commonalities, so not to relive our shortcomings. It’s incredible how Peele’s hot streak thus far can be either simply enjoyed by the typical moviegoer or thoroughly analyzed by the cinema artists, carrying a deceptive amount of heart in the process of the hilarity and screams. Give this horror film a chance, then you for certain will want to do your part in removing the traps that separate us.

Atmospheric, creepy, scary, and downright tense, "Us" is a great follow-up to Peele's "Get Out" that will leave you sufficiently entertained, and most likely a little disturbed.

I liked the perspective of inequality taken from the film, specifically economic and social class inequality, and some truly thrilling moments. However, the film's third act seems to detour leaving a lot more questions than answers with a lot of unset circumstances that could have been done more eloquently. In addition, the twist was relatively predictable based on the first act setup. Overall, this is a fine sophomore effort from Peele, but doesn't capture the success he found in Get Out. I'm fascinated to see if Peele will break into new genres in the future or end up being typecast as this social horror director. Expand

But unlike many movies from that era, the conclusion isn't wrapped up nicely for the audience. Instead it leaves the audience hanging with some questions. And I think this will prove divisive. Personally I found it more haunting than if everything had been explained. But likely some people will not enjoy this and feel like they were teased all along. It really is a story that's begging the viewer to interpret it.

I highly recommend you take a chance on this film. Jordan Peele has really surprised me as a director of horror, but as a fan of the genre I couldn't be happier with his work.

The direction, most of the edit work,I really wanted to like this. I really, really did. I was super excited for it after the trailer release, but it ended up being something completely and utterly different from what I was expecting. The direction, most of the edit work, cinematography, acting, all great. Unfortunately, a great movie also needs a great story, and this is where “Us” falls flat. It looks like Peele just wanted to do too much at once and as a result we are left with a patchwork quilt of a film that isn’t truly horror or thriller or comedy. I don’t want to go into details that would spoil anything, but the plot has massive, stadium-sized holes in it and that’s for the bits the movie actually decides to explain. As for the rest? Well let’s just say that vague, openendedness doesn’t work when there wasn’t even enough to encourage imagination or thought out of the audience. Also, the ending could be seen more than a mile away; there are a couple lines spoken by characters (one in the first 10 or so minutes) that straight up spoonfeed you the final twist. Not great.

Let me preface this other part by getting this out there, as I’m sure many are wondering - No, there really is nothing racial about this film, unless you think having most (not all) major characters played by black people constitutes “racial stuff”, in which case you have other troubling issues that require attention. There aren’t really even any “good” or “bad” people; it’s all relative/subjective based on the situation, which is one of the points of the movie that actually holds up well. Anyway, coming to a related topic, yes, we are now in an era of overcompensation for the historically unjust mistreatment of others, which can lead to certain movies ending up with inflated scores...However, I for one would much rather see this than go back to how it used to be, and seeing the made up nonsense in some of these user reviews, it seems that the people who are upset are exactly the ones you’d think.

So, where does all that leave us? “Us” is worth seeing for its atmosphere and many other positives related to its technical construction, including the actors’ performances. However, don’t go in expecting some intense horror film NOR some super politically charged anti-establishment and/or race relations piece. Jordan Peele will one day probably be one of our greatest directorial voices, he’s just not quite there yet.

The box office smash Us is proves that great movies don’t come easy, but there is a lot of talent and passion that makes a film like this work. Warning there will be some spoilers in this synopsis, but the ending will not be revealed for those who do want to read it. So, dear reader, read at your own risk.

The film opens with text about how several tunnels running underground in America. Afterwords, an ad on an old television comes on for a Hands Across America and how we can be tethered together, more on that later, to stop poverty. We are then showed our lead at Santa Cruz as a young girl Adelaide, performed by Madison Curry, walking away from her parents and into a house of mirrors labeled Vision Quest. She sees a version of herself that is real but it’s not quite her. She runs away and is in shock of what happened. Cut to present day and Adelaide all grown up, played by Lupita Nyong’o, is going on a vacation with her family to relax. But when her husband wants to go to the boardwalk, but she declines at first. But after much convincing she goes back. From there things are not as they seem.

Get Out, his previous film, was a film that no one saw coming. It won an Academy Award for best original screenplay. It has gained massive accolades and is considered one of the best horror films ever made. After I saw the film personally, I wanted to know what his next project was. Cut to December 25, 2018, when the trailer was released for Us. I was ecstatic to when the film was coming out and I went and saw it in the theatre.

Jordan Peele's second film is a triumph in cinematic horror. I feel I am not being hyperbolic when I say this, but he not only made a great movie but he cultivated an experience that can't be replicated. Jordan Peele is the modern auteur. He is in full control of these projects and as a unique vision that isn't shown in mainstream storytelling. When you see Us, you know that there is passion in what he makes even if the symbolism is not very clear. For me, I would like to see movies in where everyone is giving it their all which makes an entertaining movie.

The film should be studied for its structure and symbolic nature. It not only will give people conversations for a long time but will entertain everyone for years to come. Us, to quote another iconic auteur, may be his masterpiece.

“US” against us

“Us” by Jordan Peele, the once comedian and actor transitioned to innovative/revolutionary horror/suspense movie creator. Much acclaim could be given to this movie but I expect some will be taken away from the brilliance of this film purely based on comparison to his first film “Get Out”.

Nevertheless, this film gives you exactly what you want in a horror film. It has you watching behind your back, looking around the corner, and looking in the mirror differently. On a completely different spectrum, this film is capable of inspiring dialogue and discussion among friends, family, co-workers and allows you to share some laughs. Peele has struck gold again with this film in the way he’s played into people’s conscious and subconscious fears and the actual reality we live. Peele also found a way to tie biblical context to current reality seamlessly, further adding to the quality of this film. All of the above makes this a well-rounded film.

Now this film isn’t perfect by any stretch. If I have to nitpick, there is some predictability. Also the explanation in the ending, even for a fantasy movie, is unrealistic. It leaves you saying, “huh?” and “how’d they do that again?”. But all in all, that doesn’t make me tell a person to not see this movie in the theater. I wouldn’t be surprised if this movie gets some Oscar chatter, especially if it can gain a following similar to “Get Out”.

Either way, go see this in the theater and I’d even say get yourself some popcorn to smack on to ease the suspense he leaves you in.

In my opinion Jordan Peele is very good at provoking your mind and making you think, so to the casual viewer "Us"(2019) will definitley get your mind going but to me I saw a lot of elements from things i've already seen. In Summary this is gonna be a lot for most people but to me it was A horror twis on a National Lampoon's Vacation series family dynamic with Black Swan(2010) and Invasion of the body snatchers(1978) as fundamentals and a nice Monster(1994) twist in there, thats how I percieved this movie at least in a raw point of view of it without looking at it from those perspectives "Us" was enjoyable because I could see how the director was leading the viewer throughout the movie with his style of filmmaking this movie will make you ask and it shows you things in detail like hiding the answers in plain sight but without giving you the whole thing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite some troublesome plot holes, this was a pretty solid movie. I do agree that it suffers a little because it's choosing to make a political statement. A slightly different choice around the origins of the movie main villains would be all that I needed. However, my origin story would undercut the moral of this tale.

This is a thinking person's horror movie on par with the extremely underrated but still haunting "Event Horizon."

We are introduced to the Wilsons, led by jovial patriarch Gabe (Winston Duke) and his reserved wife Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o), on a vacation to the beaches of Santa Cruz with their two kids (Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex). Gabe’s enthusiasm for holiday hobbies is unshared by Adelaide, a victim of childhood trauma who begins to feel uneasy after a series of unnerving coincidences start to plague their idyllic trip. Her fears are not unfounded, as the family are soon terrorised by doppelgangers in what proves to be a horror thrill-ride, thoughtfully executed by Jordan Peele.
Peele is a maestro of the genre; he has an uncanny way of knowing both when to play into horror tropes and when to subvert them completely, resulting in a film that grips the audience in its unpredictability. So many elements are combined in Us; there’s old-fashioned slasher horror and classic home invasion, accompanied by the suspense and sharp comedy of Get Out. Even more satisfying, however, is Peele’s inclusion of underlying social commentary, a subtle satire perhaps echoed in the film’s title (are we talking about the pronoun or looking at a critique of U.S society?). Us may lack the deft narrative control of Get Out, but in some ways it’s an even more impressive feat of filmmaking, equally thought-provoking and thematically complex, yet more ambitious and inventive. The entire movie is shrouded in a layer of ambiguity; Peele is giving us the freedom to interpret it in whatever way we wish. Some will see Us as more of a metaphor, others as a social statement… many will also see it as simply a gorily entertaining crowd-pleaser and the film functions gloriously even as just that. It’s not without the occasional plot-hole, but if these inspire Peele to return to the ‘Us-verse’ for another film to clear up the gaps, they will all have been worth it. Us is elevated by a selection of fantastic performances, notable by the fact that every actor plays two roles, that of their character and their throat-slitting counterpart. Lupita Nyong’o is a force of silent determination as Adelaide and oozes steely creepiness as the leader of the subterranean “Tethered”, Red. Winston Duke’s Gabe is the soft-hearted master of the dad joke, yet his twin is wonderfully menacing. The two kids are fantastic and Elisabeth Moss is brilliant as always. In the third act, the film becomes slightly more unfocused, but the cast keep it buoyant with spirited performances.
Visually, the film is absolutely gorgeous, Mike Gioulakis’ cinematography making expert use of reflections as a terrifying motif to keep us on the edge of our seats. Homage is paid to other horror classics; an overhead car shot reminds one of the Torrances arriving at the Overlook in ‘The Shining’ and haunting dance interludes echo of Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Black Swan’. Even with this, Us feels like an original product, unapologetically strange and stylish. Michael Abels’ score is also a gem, an amalgamation of itchy strings, taiko drums and Satanic choirs. Jukebox choices in certain scenes are also well-judged (let’s just say, Luniz’s I Got 5 On It will have a whole new meaning).
With Us, Jordan Peele seems to have broken the sophomore curse, cementing his status as one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. It’s the kind of film where, with every return viewing, you will notice more and more clever touches that lie hidden in its rich textures. Horrifying, trenchant and unique, Us is another success from Jordan Peele.

The short review: A good, not great, horror/thriller that did not fully succeed due to the lack of plausibility (for me). Related media: There's no related media to this film (but I have seen the excellent Get Out).

What's it like?: The film asks what would happen if there is doppelganger out there for each of us that wants to kill us to take over our lives.

Positives:

1) As with Get Out, this film is an edge-fo-the-seat horror/thriller that has an interesting plot. 2)The twist at the end is good stuff.

Negatives: 1) However, the twist at the end does not match up with how Lupita's character had been behaving for some parts of the story. A main question is, why did she have a holiday home, or allow her husband to buy a holiday home in Santa Cruz, considering what she knows, and I am referring to the twist?

2) Several questions on the creation of the clones, such as who, why and how, need to be explained to make the plot plausible.

3) More questions on why the clones are so murderous, how did they know where to find their doppelgangers (the 'real' people), as well as what they are doing at the end of the film needs answering.

How would the different age groups rate it?

Children: (Not rated for kids)

Teens: Excellent

Young adults: Excellent Medium age adults: Good

Old adults: Good Rating: 4/5 (no half scores). It is worth it to watch it in the cinema.

This movie, just like Get Out, is incredibly surreal and could pass as an X Files feature. Decent watch I guess? Expand

A wildly entertaining film, with strong performances and a unique visual style, that also offers much to unpack about the shifting dynamics of privilege and oppression.

Slightly Disappointing
Us should’ve been a masterpiece and it shows masterpiece like tendencies at times, but it still should’ve been better.

This is the second film directed by Jordan Peele after his hit directorial debut, Get Out. I think that film was stronger overall, but Us was very entertaining! It is a horror-comedy about a family that is being attacked by...themselves. This movie had me on the edge of my seat and laughing at the same time! Some might think the movie is tonally inconsistent, but I think the mix of horror and comedy worked very well. I thought it was genuinely really funny and scary. The soundtrack was pretty cool, the performances were excellent, it looked great, and there are many surprises and twists! This movie has received kind of a mixed reaction, but I think people’s expectations are too high. Get Out was so good, it’s gonna be hard to top it. Just take this movie for what it is, a smart, scary, fun and funny horror movie! Check it out, you’ll have fun! Expand

Jordan Peele has struck gold a second time. The movie is fantastically direction and phenomenally acted. The movie isn't as complex with social commentary as Get Out, but what does exist in the movie will leave you thinking for days afterwards.

A thing of beauty - with a major flaw that reveals itself in the final act and then ripples back, revealing a fault line that runs through the whole story.

You’re going to have to decide if that flaw will ruin this for you or if you can ignore it and enjoy the ride. The level of disbelief that Mr. Peele asks the audience to suspend, all the questions that the big reveal leaves us with and that Peele asks us not to wonder about - it left me feeling frustrated. But I’ve watched it a few times now, and the riveting performances within it, the masterfully fluid shifts in tone; I can’t help but love this.

I’ve decided to love it for what it is instead of resenting it for what it might’ve been.

The film affects the viewer at a different mental level. Until the middle of the film, nothing is clear at all, and only towards the end do the motives and actions of the clones become clear. The main plot twist is so perfectly inscribed in the plot that some details become clear only at the end of the film. Yes, Jordan Peele knows how to shoot psedochorrors, but personally I liked Us more than Get Out. Maybe because there's no BLM subpoena here. Expand

I was content with my enjoyment of the movie, but then I saw all these negative reviews that all said the same thing: that the movie was confusing or illogical. Really? A HORROR MOVIE, THAT IS! Does Freddie Krueger make sense? Jeremy Vorhees? a pet cemetery No. In order to frighten us, most horror movies begin and end in fantasy terms that have some basis in truth. It was the first time a villain assaulted us in a dream, which is why Freddie Krueger frightened the living daylights out of people in the 1980s. Reality and fantasy collide. Expand
