This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unlike the topic 'Being yourself' from other films and television works, discussion about Chinese and women's exploration is taken to the top floor. The seemingly exaggerated expression method integrates the traditional concepts with trendy ideas: one side singing 4town boy's Pop song and the other side the old Cantonese chorus, Pop song finally outweighs Cantonese and became the sound from the heart. If the reminiscence of turning is just a plot, or something that people can't imagine in real life, just let us think about it. After all, nothing stays the same all the time, and we will still miss the past, but so what? We still need to turn into a small panda to twist your fart in front of the old generation. Expand

As someone who is neither Chinese nor Canadian I still find this film so relatable. So reviews claiming the target audience is niche are way off base. One of the best things about this film was the representation of real genuine human beings. From the animated characters to the actual people behind the movie. The characters were representative of the people you see in every day life—different races, different weights, different styles, and the 13 year old characters actually looked liked real 13 year olds braces and freckles and all! Refreshing to see. Then I watched the behind the scenes and got to see the people behind the movie were majority Asian and female (AMAZING). So many movies based on certain races or cultures maybe have a handful of that race or culture actually on staff. I'm so happy this movie was different. This movie deserves to be Pixars highest grossing movie. It is absolutely phenomenal. I don't want to give any spoilers but to see an awkward weird main character who doesn't tone is down is exactly what I wish I could see represented when I was that age. As a current weird girl who has always been "too much" for others I used to be so self conscious about it. I have grown to love it now but this movie is monumental to see that representated in the media in a positive way. Expand

Basically, the parents who take cues from Carrie White’s mother and deny that puberty exists and girls have periods. For everyone else this is a gorgeously made movie with a timeless, yet simple life lesson and delivers that message tactfully and with tons of great humor and visual style. Everyone has messy parts of themselves they try to hide from the world, but we still have to accept and live with those aspects and true friends will still love and care for you even if you show glimpses of that mess. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a 34-year-old Asian man and I find this movie totally dumb and weak. The script and plot are all over the place. After the cliche info-dump at exactly the 30-minute mark, I nearly turned it off. What surprised me is the plot didn't follow or respect its own made-up lore rules. "Turning Red" doesn't know whether it wants to be an allegory for puberty or a character study. Every single character aside from Meiling and Ming is completely one-dimensional. I can't believe this was a Pixar film, as there was evidently no proper quality control involved in this movie. This film's stupid, manic energy actually ends up sinking it. There are like 2 good scenes, and one of them is mostly great because it doesn't have any dialogue (like the director's "Bao" short, which was very good). It seems like this film fell through the cracks during the Chapek takeover, and did not receive proper care and oversight. This was clearly a movie made by Millennial artists with mommy issues for Millennial artists with mommy issues. The early-2000s setting is barely utilized (I was a kid during that time too), whether it's in the dialogue/slang, fashion, trends, or general behaviors (compare to something like "The Wackness", which captures the '90s perfectly).

I haven't even gotten into the myriad problems with the story. Do you want to show your children that reckless, thoughtless selfishness and self-interest is a virtue? Do you want to see a film where children are not only rewarded for lying to their parents, sneaking out at night multiple times, and putting others in danger, but the mother is an overbearing, neurotic, controlling mess? (Not to mention our protagonist puts her friends, family, and tens of thousands at risk multiple times for a ****ing concert, but even after a wildly idiotic grand finale, that point is totally glazed over?!) Is your idea of a good movie one filled with cliches and cookie-cutter characters? Do you think stereotypical portrayals of Asians - both visually and in the script - are "wins" for "diversity" and "inclusion"? Do you enjoy the butt-ugly "CalArts" character design elements - noodle arms, bean mouths, and Mr. Potato Head-style facial expressions that don't squash or stretch faces at all? Then this dumb farce, totally inappropriate for anyone younger than 11, might just be for you.

Pixar movies were usually the animated movies that everyone was talking about but I barely heard anyone talk aboutPixar returns with another movie that is, unfortunately, going straight to Disney+ with little recognition or fanfare about it. Pixar movies were usually the animated movies that everyone was talking about but I barely heard anyone talk about this one. The premise is "Mei Lee is a 13-year-old girl who is torn between being her mother's obedient daughter and the chaos of her youth. As if that were not enough, when she gets too excited, she turns into a big red panda". Is this a sleeper hit or is this going to be a Pixar movie people forget?

Let's get the obvious out of the way first. This movie is visually great with its phenomenal animation. The character designs, the city and the panda itself are all wonderfully pleasant. There is a lot of anime-inspired influences within the film and it certainly shows in the visuals. It's a mostly grounded movie but when the magical stuff happens, the usual Pixar magic occurs and it is great! For example, there is a nightmare sequence and it is just ridiculously weird, which I love. The cinematography is great as usual with some stellar shots. Ludwig Göransson who is the music composer for Black Panther, Tenet and The Mandalorian is composing for Turning Red (2022). He does a good job with his utilization of Chinese wind instruments, which helps capture the feel of the film. There is also a music segment that combines Cantonese chants with a pop song and Ludwig is somehow able to make that work!

Turning Red is a coming of age story which has been overdone and it is also obvious from the first 10 minutes what the message at the end is going to be. Yet despite that, I came out enjoying the story and being completely satisfied by where the characters end up. The main character, Mei, and her relationship with her mother is the heart of the film. It's a good focus as I found their love for each other very heart-warming. Thus, when there is a conflict between them, it is genuinely quite sad to see which shows how effective the movie was. Likewise, the friendship between Mei and her friends is also very touching. It's also the first Pixar film to focus on Asian culture which I appreciate. There isn't a lot of western films that focus on Asian culture so it was nice that Pixar was willing to do so. It does have a lot of Asian culture in it but I don't think it ever gets to the point that it isolates non-Asian's enjoyment of it.

However, the humour is very cringy and not funny whatsoever. The voice performance of the main character Mei is also a bit of mix bag as she has the same tone in every scene. It is also difficult to connect with the main character because she is so hyperactive and obsessed with boys which makes it hard to sympathize or root for her.

Overall, I am glad that Pixar tried to do something unique. It has a heart-warming family story in it that is unfortunately squandered by how the main character is written. It's great that Asians are getting more representation in western movies but I don't think this was the exact right approach. It is still an enjoyable coming of age story and I think the good elements outweigh the weird negatives of Turning Red.

Technically, I don't understand what the hell is going on with this movie either. The animation is so ridiculously sharp that there's never any contrast between the backgrounds and foregrounds. It hurt my eyes to even watch it.

In line with the strange trajectory of animated films creating unlikable protagonists, the main character is annoying as all hell. I'm also not sure what the message is supposed to be here: Is it about girls reaching adulthood? Is it a commentary about Tiger Parenting? It honestly doesn't matter, because the movie did nothing to make me care either way.

I'd skip this one unless you have small children who would appreciate the vibrant colors and sensory overload animation style. But even they might find this disappointing.

But it’s her mum that isn’t believable. No mum would go out of her way to completely humiliate and socially destroy her daughter the way she does. The reason the girl turns into a giant red panda is because her mother is suppressing her daughter’s sexual desires for teenage boys. Is this movie for adults? Does Disney have the viewpoint I need to know how to educate my kids on the topic of puberty and how not to parent my child? I turned it off after about fifteen minutes because Turning Red is stupid. Totally unrealistic . At no point is this mother and her actions believable. She’s so far from reality I can’t empathise with her at all. I’m out. I lasted about fifteen minutes in so I don’t know how more tragic it becomes. Expand

This however, is a new low and might even be worse than Cars 3. The characters were all highly unlikeable and annoying and it’s easy to want to see them suffer. But of course, they get no consequences for their actions. The animation was visually ugly to look at, the jokes were not funny at all. The worst part of this film however, is the lesson it tries to send out; why be a better person when you can embrace your mistakes as part of your personality? Wtf? It’s like saying “I just let a burglar loose, that’s part of who I am now”. There is a reason this film did not make it to theatres which Disney won’t tell us. It’s obvious, it’s because the movie sucks! The critics are trying to get people to believe it’s actually good while it obviously isn’t. Pixar has produced amazing classics like Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, etc, but this is not like the company I grew up with. I’m not too optimistic about their future at this point. Expand

It's fine. I was sick on the couch and it was watchable, but nothing stands out as particularly memorable. People who find it offensive in any way are absolute idiots. It barely tips its toes into saying anything of substance.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Turning Red is an okay movie. I was expecting it to be much worse, thanks to the goofy trailers they showed us, but it's still not enough to shine, yet another proof that movies are currently in a crisis of decline. But let's start talking about the good instead of this nonsense verbiage, okay? Okay. First of all, this movie is full of messages. Pretty good about it, both very subtly and overtly. Some moments of humor are good, and the animation really helps keep several moments entertaining overall. The animation is not too bad in general either, although later I will have to mention something that some may not like.
Already focusing on the bad, because the same as always, it's too cliche and predictable. And when I say too much, I mean TOO MUCH. It doesn't even try, the plot is just too basic. Although they end up saving their messages and humorous situations, some of these scenes are very forced or have nonsense, like when Mei Li enters the stadium with her powers near the end, which makes about half of the movie an amazing padding. Why she and their friends didnt enter on the first place? And how all of the Mei Li parents enter like nothing without paying 200 dollars each one? There´also a lot of cringe situations, and some people may say that "duh, they are 13 year old girls", like if that would fix anything, no, thats not how things work. And for last, although this is something minor, while i said that the animation is good overall, the colour is very saturated sometimes. I had to look around only to take a break. While is not a negative point and it didnt bother me too much, probably it would annoy some people.
Despiteeeeee everything, is a movie worth watching, so anyway, my irrelevant opinion is reflected like always, and if you disagree, i dont care.

Fantastic animation, amazing job pulling you into the time period, and the food shot was outstanding.
Unfortunately the story was mediocre Coming of Age with constant cringe, average music, and little substance below the veneer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you are thinking about watching Turning Red, here's a good review. Personally, I would not have watched a movie that is so sexist, filled with adult jokes like stripper music and twerking, statements like "my panda (body), my choice" and encourages kids to lie and disobey their parents with absolutely zero consequences. Let's also ignore the fact that the first 20 minutes, the girls mom thinks she got her period. (the entire movie though relies heavily on that symbolism , including the title and how the main girl has to control her emotions, only to decide its OK to disobey her parents and get angry and out of control, screw the consequences. This ovie takes place in 2002, so I feel this movie has a limited target audience, mostly girls who were 13 in 2002. It had no good morals, the characters were oe demensional and annoying. Expand

Woke is not the problem with this movie. The problem is the ending, which I imagine is entirely re-written for the Chinese market, in every measurable way our protagonist has become a worse person.

1. She is no longer a good student

2. She never deals with the fact she couldn't communicate with her mom

3. Rather than develop a relationship ala Brave her mom just gives up, "My panda my choice" after all...

4. If a 13-year-old understands the subtext, that 13 year old just heard a mom say - "Have unprotected sex I can't tell you what to do";

5. Tradition is the enemy, rather than the anchor in the end.

6. Moral defects are largely ignored because anger of any sort isn't allowed to have space. Anger isn't just some terrible emotion, I thought Pixar understood this.

7. The mom never deals with the fact her teenager has significant moral failings, its all swept under the rug.

8. At the end of the movie the audience is encouraged to be their unabashed selves - Temperance and prudence are vices, not virtue.

9. Watch Pinocchio deals with the same themes but teaches the lesson to reject the monster within rather than embrace it.

What is got right: 1. Puberty - it's actually a decent story until Act 3 when the writers seem to realize they were headed down a tried and true path and decided to jump off a cliff.

2. Funny- There are several funny parts

3. The animation style and call back to Anime movies

Other notes: This is not a movie for kids under 10.

It was noticeable to me that all the male characters were arbitrary and when shown were emasculated throughout. Not sure I felt comfortable with this new direction Pixar are taking with their newer films. Scenes filled with unnecessary levels of woke-ness aside this is basically a Ranma1/2 inspired anime style female version of teen wolf without the superior storyline. As entertaining as it was, this was not a scratch on Pixar's best. Expand

It is a heartwarming tale about friendship, family, traditionsI was skeptical first because it was not released in cinema which is normally a huge warning sign. However after the a bit awkwardly first few minutes the movie won me fully over. It is a heartwarming tale about friendship, family, traditions and finding your own way. The charming cast and immersive story are truly excellent. The story stars the 13 year old Meilin Lee (Mei) whose Chinese descendant family runs a temple dedicated to ancestor worship in Toronto (Canada). She is also a bit a child of two worlds as she has interests her parents especially her very traditional and overprotective mother Ming wouldn’t find good like the boygroup 4*Town. However unbeknownst to her there is a family secret involving the red pandas her ancestors loved. I stop here to avoid spoilers but say the movie posters alone spoil a lot. The story is amazing. There are so many elements like family relations, a tale of true friendship, traditions vs your own way, life choices, different world view and more. It is immersive, relatable and heartwarming. Also they do the heroes journey right. There are consequences and character developments. Many modern films fail here miserable. The final act is superb and the conclusion rounds up the great experience. I must praise the whole cats. Be it director Domee Shi who is along Julia Sho also the writer and the fantastic voice actors cast. Rosalie Chiang, Ava Morse, Maitreyi Ramkrishnan and Hyein Park are fully convincing and made you think you want friends like these. Sandra Oh as Ming is amazing and her more silent husband voiced by Orion Lee is sneakingly good too. I find no misstep here and praise the whole cast. The animations won me over too. A unique style and everything looks beautiful. Again no misstep. Overall this movie won me over and it is a shame that it was not released in cinema. I give a bonus point to reach a 10/10 as it felt bad to give a lower rating. Expand

Turning red is a triumphant coming of age story that's beaming in diversity (with Chinese, Korean and Indian characters) and rooted in cultural representation. People who think Turning red is centred on Asian culture only will be wrong, because the issues that it raises are as universal as they come; Turning red deftly handles the various themes it deals with, and delivers an easy form of humour to keep things gliding smoothly. The 2000s styling is also a beautiful choice. With a heartfelt story, stunning visuals and score, Turning red is undoubtedly one of the best animations of 2022. Expand

Soooo, soooo cringy.

The characters are so flat that I had zero interest in any of them. They seem to try to incorporate some of the emotion characters from Inside - but as actual humans. Doesn't work well. One character being "the angry one" and another character being "the stoic one" and so on.

Many reviewers here talk about disliking it for being woke. I couldn't care less. I don't dislike the movie for that as it's not something I tend to even notice. The movie is bad in itself.

(Mild spoilers)
This is definitely one of Pixar's most controversial movies, if not the most controversial, and it's not particularly hard to see why, as certain scenes are kind of grown-up, while others are kinda cringe. Still, however, it addresses the topic of growing up, becoming a teenager, wanting to gain independence and having had enough of your parents wanting you to be perfect.

The panda obviously reflects how teenagers can go from happy to upset in just a few seconds (something I can confirm as a fellow teenager), while wanting to keep the identity of the panda instead of getting rid of it signifies that 1) you are a different person from your ancestors, you don't have to get rid of it just because they did and 2) even if you possess a dangerously powerful ability, if you learn how to control it, it can be beneficial rather than harmful (for example the part they took the photos etc).

Of course, the animation and the entire picture is top-tier, as it is most of the fine after all. So yeah there are a few controversial scenes and I get why some people dislike it, but in my opinion it addresses important topics in a fun way, which is why I think it's a great movie. Not the best Pixar movie, but definitely one of the best I've watched this year
