I loved the colors, the story and the characters. If it's a bit cringy at times it's only because it's doing a good job at protraying young teenagers. One of the best Pixar movies I've seen in years.

One of the funniest Pixar films, full of energy and heart. So refreshing to enjoy a story that doesn’t need a villain, it’s smarter than that. And of course - as usual with Pixar - a visual treat. Highly recommended to anyone!

That’s your job. The movie was funny, cute, honest to the struggles of adolescent identity, and how much stress there is in growing from childhood into adolescence. Great fun and playful. Not for smaller children. Just because it’s animation does not mean it’s for children. Themes that address a different cultural perspective than most sheltered white people are accustomed to seeing, and easily accessible if you’re not racist. I love the people calling it “woke” because it’s outside of their norm (read sarcasm). Give it an honest viewing and I believe you’ll come to love it. Expand

Deep in my soul, I feel that my 13-year old self with all of her energy, her fears, her hopes, and even her cringey pre-teen imaginative fantasies-- is seen, heard, and acknowledged. The film creatively addresses topics related to adolescence and growing up in a real, yet light-hearted way.

I can see this film grow with the young people of today, and becoming even more appreciated far beyond their awkward pre-teen years. For children, the material in this movie may not be fully understood, yet it foreshadows what is to come and normalizes it as a rite of passage. I envision Turning Red being a powerful conversation starter amongst many families.

It’s a good movie don’t get me wrong but it wasn’t super memorable. It was very sweet though. The characters are fun and it’s a nice story about coming into your own and making your own decisions. The art style is different from Pixar but I did like it. I liked that it was different and that its character designs were unique compared to other Pixar films. The writing isn’t anything too special. It services the story nicely but it doesn’t really stand out in anything other than animation and character designs. The story was nice and sweet but I wasn’t fully engaged with it. The film was also kind of annoying to sit through for the first 30 minutes but it got better as it went along. The voice acting is pretty good. I can’t pinpoint one performance that I loved or hated. Everyone did a good job. The humor definitely was hit or miss. When it landed, it really landed. The film can be REALLY funny sometimes but other times the jokes just didn’t work. The animation is beautiful as always. The environments looked gorgeous. Even though I wasn’t fully engaged with this, it was still a fun time. I would recommend checking this out if you like Pixar or want something a little different from them. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the best Pixar movies I have seen since “Soul”. And actually, it’s better than “Soul”. I went in with very low expectations. Especially after Disney’s recent masterpiece “Encanto”. “Turning Red” is a beautiful and heartwarming film that anyone who has been through puberty should be able to relate to. I did not have a messy puberty. I did not fall out with my family or turn into an angry monster. But I still found this character compelling and relatable. There will definitely be aspects you will relate to more if you are asian or a girl/woman, but I don’t think you need to exist inside that demographic to get something from this movie. It’s just as easily about trying to discover yourself with the knowledge that who you really are may be initially disapproving to your family or friend groups, but you should go be your awesome self and they will still love you. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What I have to say ist that the Animation of Pixar is getting better. From Toy Story to Cars has Turning Red also a good Graphic and Look! The Story was nice, but I saw better Movies from Pixar. The first 10 minutes are unfortunately bad. It look like a "Teenage cringe Moments" BUT after it´s getting better. How the Protagonist is trying to control her emotions is such a good Message. just not for her, it´s the same for everyone in this Movie. If I could delete one thing in this Movie, it will be the "4town"... Just no. Also the final Showdown isn´t amazing, because her Mom as the Panda looks dangerous but she isn´t. she just screaming her daughter to punish for what she did.

But still, I recommend this film anyway. Bye!

Made me think of insideFrom fairytale to furry tail. Much better than expected. Really funny and bold lessons about growing up, the connection between a child becoming teenager and her mother and the rest of the family is very well painted. Made me think of inside out, who was also talking about a young girl going through transformations in a her brain instead of her body in red alert. But here, the rhythm is better, I laughed a lot, the attention to detail is not really in how things look like (it’s Pixar, looks like Pixar) but how all these characters move, the lips, the hips, the eyebrows, the way they walk, the animation is really fantastic and brings another layer to understand the difference between what we say and what we think or how we feel : you don’t have to show how 5 little things in the brain fight to take decisions, you just have to read the face, an ode to non verbal communication. The secondary characters are also very good, for example even the dad is such a loving and fun character finding his place among all those women. All in all, I wish everybody could watch this film, as the message behind it, about how we can respect one another even as we are evolving, how love is shown by accepting that others also can change, how over controlling oneself and others has maybe more down sides than giving some space to our inner energy… life is complicated, latest Pixar may have been messy, but this one finally finds the right balance. Maybe it’s actually about Pixar itself becoming a teenager asking to Mama Disney to let it grow up, and that everything will be ok. Expand

The characters have their own unique lovable qualities. The themes they tried to convey are true to life, though some were executed in a way not so relatable to everyone (including me) like the expensive boy band concerts. I'd definitely spend that much money for something else—though I understand the desire to spend money on something you love.

Overall, just a nice watch and heartwarming at the end too. I got drawn in and had difficulty getting up the couch to pee, because I didn't want to miss anything.

This latest features a 13-year-old Asian girl who turns into a giant red panda anytime she gets excited. While her overbearing mother tries to help her cope with the family curse, her friends scheme with her to get to a concert featuring the latest boy band (their appropriately K-pop songs were written by Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell). While it's undeniable that the energy never lags and the animation is lively (and sometimes lovely), the characters are seldom unique, which gives it less comic heft. As Pixar expands their audience to more mature subjects (getting her period is addressed), they're keeping the playful energy, but sacrificing some of the clever fun. For young women, this should certainly appeal. Expand

I love animated films and have absolutely no reservations about family films. Turning Red is now one of my favorite films from this area and now shares here purely with Zoomania and How to train your dragon.

It is clear that the film was made by women for women. With the focus on teenage girls and mothers dealing with the generational conflicts with their mother and their teenage children. The leadership of the production team consisted of four women, here and there a look more from the point of view of a man would certainly not have harmed the film, but it's OK.

More than that. In many negative reviews, the female point of view is punished with zero stars and implied with the reasoning that a girls-only movie should not come from Disney/Pixars or in 2022 sexual development should not be touched upon . But hey, at least in Europe sexual education is already much deeper in elementary school - Not to mention at 13 years old in high school. Maybe one or the other is still a bit prudish here. That being said, with all the predominantly male films, it's also OK to have another boost for films from the female point of view. And if you're a little open-minded and like animated films and/or family films in general, you'll enjoy this film as a male as well.

I also engage with the technology and creativity in movies/games and can see this film's own animation style. The director describes it as omarge to the 90's and 2000's animated series and comics and it often looks like that. It's definitely not a throwback, it's a comic book or cartoony animated film and that's totally OK too. You just have to get into it and not expect photorealism or smooth movements.

The film is about a Canadian girl with Chinese roots. Unlike Mulan, I can't see any consideration for Chinese politics here. It just happens to be a girl with immigrants from China and otherwise it would not work with the story. The film is definitely predominantly Western.

In the end, I'm left with a film whose ending could have been a bit stronger and where a look more from a male point of view certainly wouldn't have hurt. But neither of those two points really pulls the film down, at least not for me.

On the positive side are 91min with a crisply told story without dragging everything out unnecessarily, a successful and consistently persistent animation style, a musical score which carries you through the story from beginning to end, and a modern humor which takes the sometimes difficult seeming puberty and generational conflicts yet again simple and direct.

In short, turning red is a very good animated film for the family and especially probably adolescent young women!

It was cute! It isn’t the best Pixar movie of all time but it was really good, and it’s something new.

Yes, it covers periods, but in a largely abstract way, it isn’t a biology class video like some of these reviews seem to indicate. They do also use the word stripper and I think the word sexy. It’s really not the end of the world.

Honestly I thought the real heart of the film was about the lead character finding herself in her friendships and her relationship with her mother and culture. A very interesting concept in my opinion. The connections felt very genuine and I thought it had valuable thoughts on the above.

As for “wokeness” I’m pretty sure anything that isn’t about a white American Hardee’s burger marrying an apple pie shaped like a Chevy Camaro is going to get criticized as “woke” now days. It’s ok for movies to offer new perspectives or thoughts. In fact, it keeps our movies interesting.

Could have explored more it's themes but you can't expect more from Disney.
Probably better for teenagers and adults than children, not because it will "pervert" anyone, but they won't understand a lot of it.

The panda-persona is our 13-year-old-girl protagonist's pent-up emotions pushing to the surface at the onset of puberty, including but not limited to humorously innocent "sexy thoughts", Tina Belcher style. At first I was surprised they'd make a kids movie about a sexual awakening, but really, why not? It happens to all of us. Kids who are too young to understand won't care, and now when it happens they'll have a familiar, harmless, low-stakes launching point for understanding and conversation. For the movie alone, I'd give it a 7.5, but I'm giving it a 9 because serving this age and gender an adventure on the reality of their upcoming sexuality is risky. And, considering how controversial it is proving, it was a risk that maybe should've been taken a long time ago. Expand

This whole movie was pretty fun, the early stages of the movie was pretty slow, but we get to know the characters and understand their relationship, afterwards the movie gets really fun with good jokes and engaging story. This movie was beautiful as always, Disney doesn't give up on upgrading their animation and searching for new styles, I'm glad this movie weren't just Raya's and Encanto style like always, we all know that Pixar is much more versatile and creative and they should definitely keep it up. Overall GREAT movie, if you didn't like it watch this again goodbye have a good day people

That, or it's the RACIAL & CULTURAL DIVERSITY in Toronto. Was it too much for u that she only has 1 white friend, likes the black kid in 4 Town & the security guard was Sikh? Toronto is one of the MOST DIVERSE cities on the planet & the film accurately depicts that. AND WE LOVE IT.

Growing up with an Asian mom who STIFLED my hopes & dreams as a kid & teen WAS ROUGH. This film connected with so many of us who went thru that. I was over 30 years old before she finally said "It's ok to pursue what makes u happy" after she essentially had a mid-life crisis.

Our twin 5 year olds LOVED THE FILM, have watched it COUNTLESS TIMES & have been singing the songs for WEEKS NOW.

It's so sad that a segment of our community is so OBSESSED with their culture war grievances that they have to TRASH DISNEY/PIXAR FILMS...ur kids would be ASHAMED OF YOU.

Turning Red is one of Pixar’s most controversial films to date and you can definitely see why. The story is basically an allegory about puberty, There’s many not so subtle non-family friendly references like Stripper Music, Erotic fanart, And Tampons. That out of the way (And those aren’t criticisms of mine), Turning Red while on the high tier of Middle-Tier Pixar, Is another strong entry into Pixar’s lineup with Beautiful animation, Likeable characters, Absolutely hilarious humor, And a great handling of the subject of puberty and growing up.

The voice cast are excellent, I have no faults with them. Rosalie Chiang gives a performance full of energy in the lead role, while Sandra Oh puts in a strong display alongside Chiang. The rest of them are good too, as I also recognised James Hong and Lori Tan Chinn. Us UK viewers also have the bonus of a small role for Anne-Marie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unlike the topic 'Being yourself' from other films and television works, discussion about Chinese and women's exploration is taken to the top floor. The seemingly exaggerated expression method integrates the traditional concepts with trendy ideas: one side singing 4town boy's Pop song and the other side the old Cantonese chorus, Pop song finally outweighs Cantonese and became the sound from the heart. If the reminiscence of turning is just a plot, or something that people can't imagine in real life, just let us think about it. After all, nothing stays the same all the time, and we will still miss the past, but so what? We still need to turn into a small panda to twist your fart in front of the old generation. Expand

As someone who is neither Chinese nor Canadian I still find this film so relatable. So reviews claiming the target audience is niche are way off base. One of the best things about this film was the representation of real genuine human beings. From the animated characters to the actual people behind the movie. The characters were representative of the people you see in every day life—different races, different weights, different styles, and the 13 year old characters actually looked liked real 13 year olds braces and freckles and all! Refreshing to see. Then I watched the behind the scenes and got to see the people behind the movie were majority Asian and female (AMAZING). So many movies based on certain races or cultures maybe have a handful of that race or culture actually on staff. I'm so happy this movie was different. This movie deserves to be Pixars highest grossing movie. It is absolutely phenomenal. I don't want to give any spoilers but to see an awkward weird main character who doesn't tone is down is exactly what I wish I could see represented when I was that age. As a current weird girl who has always been "too much" for others I used to be so self conscious about it. I have grown to love it now but this movie is monumental to see that representated in the media in a positive way. Expand

Pixar movies were usually the animated movies that everyone was talking about but I barely heard anyone talk aboutPixar returns with another movie that is, unfortunately, going straight to Disney+ with little recognition or fanfare about it. Pixar movies were usually the animated movies that everyone was talking about but I barely heard anyone talk about this one. The premise is "Mei Lee is a 13-year-old girl who is torn between being her mother's obedient daughter and the chaos of her youth. As if that were not enough, when she gets too excited, she turns into a big red panda". Is this a sleeper hit or is this going to be a Pixar movie people forget?

Let's get the obvious out of the way first. This movie is visually great with its phenomenal animation. The character designs, the city and the panda itself are all wonderfully pleasant. There is a lot of anime-inspired influences within the film and it certainly shows in the visuals. It's a mostly grounded movie but when the magical stuff happens, the usual Pixar magic occurs and it is great! For example, there is a nightmare sequence and it is just ridiculously weird, which I love. The cinematography is great as usual with some stellar shots. Ludwig Göransson who is the music composer for Black Panther, Tenet and The Mandalorian is composing for Turning Red (2022). He does a good job with his utilization of Chinese wind instruments, which helps capture the feel of the film. There is also a music segment that combines Cantonese chants with a pop song and Ludwig is somehow able to make that work!

Turning Red is a coming of age story which has been overdone and it is also obvious from the first 10 minutes what the message at the end is going to be. Yet despite that, I came out enjoying the story and being completely satisfied by where the characters end up. The main character, Mei, and her relationship with her mother is the heart of the film. It's a good focus as I found their love for each other very heart-warming. Thus, when there is a conflict between them, it is genuinely quite sad to see which shows how effective the movie was. Likewise, the friendship between Mei and her friends is also very touching. It's also the first Pixar film to focus on Asian culture which I appreciate. There isn't a lot of western films that focus on Asian culture so it was nice that Pixar was willing to do so. It does have a lot of Asian culture in it but I don't think it ever gets to the point that it isolates non-Asian's enjoyment of it.

However, the humour is very cringy and not funny whatsoever. The voice performance of the main character Mei is also a bit of mix bag as she has the same tone in every scene. It is also difficult to connect with the main character because she is so hyperactive and obsessed with boys which makes it hard to sympathize or root for her.

Overall, I am glad that Pixar tried to do something unique. It has a heart-warming family story in it that is unfortunately squandered by how the main character is written. It's great that Asians are getting more representation in western movies but I don't think this was the exact right approach. It is still an enjoyable coming of age story and I think the good elements outweigh the weird negatives of Turning Red.

This film is animated gorgeously with strong voice acting, and is hilariously charming. Expand

Świetna animacja o dojrzewaniu i kwestiach z tym związanych - relacjach z przyjaciółmi oraz rodziną. Panda na ekranie wygląda świetnie wraz z resztą stylu

However after the a bit awkwardly first few minutes the movie won me fully over. It is a heartwarming tale about friendship, family, traditions and finding your own way. The charming cast and immersive story are truly excellent. The story stars the 13 year old Meilin Lee (Mei) whose Chinese descendant family runs a temple dedicated to ancestor worship in Toronto (Canada). She is also a bit a child of two worlds as she has interests her parents especially her very traditional and overprotective mother Ming wouldn’t find good like the boygroup 4*Town. However unbeknownst to her there is a family secret involving the red pandas her ancestors loved. I stop here to avoid spoilers but say the movie posters alone spoil a lot. The story is amazing. There are so many elements like family relations, a tale of true friendship, traditions vs your own way, life choices, different world view and more. It is immersive, relatable and heartwarming. Also they do the heroes journey right. There are consequences and character developments. Many modern films fail here miserable. The final act is superb and the conclusion rounds up the great experience. I must praise the whole cats. Be it director Domee Shi who is along Julia Sho also the writer and the fantastic voice actors cast. Rosalie Chiang, Ava Morse, Maitreyi Ramkrishnan and Hyein Park are fully convincing and made you think you want friends like these. Sandra Oh as Ming is amazing and her more silent husband voiced by Orion Lee is sneakingly good too. I find no misstep here and praise the whole cast. The animations won me over too. A unique style and everything looks beautiful. Again no misstep. Overall this movie won me over and it is a shame that it was not released in cinema. I give a bonus point to reach a 10/10 as it felt bad to give a lower rating. Expand
