I can't believe this is a "Pixar" movie, the animation super company that made my childhood and never disappointed me. I never thought one day i would say this but unfortunately today is the day: Pixar made a "garbage" movie!

The animation style and graphics can't compare to the achievement of their latest efforts like "Soul" etc. It looks a 2nd-rate Asian animated movie that Netflix would only give them a chance and broadcast it.
The story and characters are very forgettable, unoriginal and uninspired and these adjectives are unlike anything Pixar normally is.
How on earth did they come from Woody and WALL.E to this annoying girl? How the hell their challenging and breaking-you-down-in-tears stories become so average and predictable? Well I might have an answer: the only thing Hollywood matters in recent years is being politically correct, respectful to the movements, Hashtags etc. and in one word "Woke". Just watch it and you will find out what I mean, or don't waste your time and go see Toy Story again.… Expand

I would give it a 3 but I feel like I need to pull its undeserved score down as far as I possibly can. Pixar has been ruined by left wing politics. I know this because woke politics ruin everything; after all, the entire purpose of wokeness is to "deconstruct" and rebuild things in their image. Well, it looks like Pixar was deconstructed and what was built in its place is a hollow, shallow, shell of what used to be. Keep hiring based on race and sex, Disney, because that seems to be working out real well for your intellectual properties. LOL. This movie sucks BAD. My girlfriend and I shut it off halfway through. I felt like it had no stakes. Just an insane mother, a weak father, and an obnoxious children. But they have to get to the concert! I kept asking myself, why is the concert this important? I understand that being a child can come with obsessions, but holy cow, this concert is like life or death to these kids and it just doesn't translate to audiences. There is no good villain other than the insane mother. It's just a really bad film.… Expand

I'd heard bad things about this movie but good Lord I didn't expect it to be THIS bad. I have to stop and think about anything positive I could possibly say about this diaper dumpster fire. Otherwise I can't figure out who this movie was made for. Massive Asian stereotypes. If you're male you're going to pull a muscle with how many times you're going to cringe. If you're between 15 and 105 you're going to be aghast that this script was ever green lit. There is no chance in hell 90% of these positive reviews aren't Disney paid reviews. (Look up the 10/10 reviews and they're obviously fakes.) What mentally defunct executive sees a 13yr old girl twerking in front of her mom and thinks "kids movie"?!?! Twerking LITERALLY means "I want a you to f*** me in the a**.

Story: All adults are stupid and only the children "get it." The only coming of age trope cliche that wasn't used was SHE NEVER EVEN LEARNED ANYTHING. She decides she really is so much smarter than all the adults and decides to stay a panda. Also, boy bands are SOOO sweet and ANY price is not too high to go to a concert. There was nothing learned here in any way, shape, or form. You need to tiptoe just so you don't fall into any of the massive plot holes.

This is absolutely a show teen girls SHOULDN'T be watching cause it tells them they're right, your priorities should be about boys, instant gratification, and everyone else is clueless.

It's really sad how far Pixar has fallen. I thought they'd hit rock bottom but with this it's apparent they started digging a hole. The animation was sub-90s Nickelodeon quality and the art style has less effort put into it than a laxative commercial with bean mouths and heads. This surpasses bad, passes "so bad it's good", and reaches so bad no one should watch it even to laugh at it.

I can't imagine anything being worse this entire decade and we're only in 2022.… Expand

I watched Turning Red when it premiered on Disney+ Friday night. I’m a big fan of Pixar’s catalog up until this point, there have been hits and misses, but mostly hits. But after seeing this atrocity, I have to say, Cars 2 has someI watched Turning Red when it premiered on Disney+ Friday night. I’m a big fan of Pixar’s catalog up until this point, there have been hits and misses, but mostly hits. But after seeing this atrocity, I have to say, Cars 2 has some competition for worst Pixar film.

The story is about a rebellious young girl who twerks at her mom and discusses periods. Oh, and she often turns into a big red panda and makes sure everyone knows that it’s “her panda, her choice.” There is also an anti-God narrative and involves the spirit realm and worshiping their ancestors. For the second movie in a row, there is a husband who is an absolute dope, who’s wife wears the pants in the family. Need I say more? I haven’t even scratched the surface. If you want your child to turn into some type of crazy person, go ahead and let them soak this one in. Pixar has totally let us down with this movie. The visual quality even looks worse than Luca. The writing is just ridiculous and the characters are not relatable or interesting. In fact, the main character is reprehensible and annoying. I can’t think of many redeeming qualities this film has. I suppose it can be someone’s guilty pleasure…maybe? It feels like a movie that was just phoned in, one that lacks direction or passion. It cares more about sending left-leaning, woke messages to the audience than trying to entertain.

In summary, Turning Red made me turn red with anger. Well, and put me to sleep. I can’t believe I’m saying this about a Pixar film! Is this even reality? With how political Disney has become over recent years, I shouldn’t be that surprised. Looks like it’s happening at Pixar too. Cars 2 no longer has to hold that final spot, so congrats Lightning, you’re now back on the lead lap.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a 34-year-old Asian man and I find this movie totally dumb and weak. The script and plot are all over the place. After the cliche info-dump at exactly the 30-minute mark, I nearly turned it off. What surprised me is the plot didn't follow or respect its own made-up lore rules. "Turning Red" doesn't know whether it wants to be an allegory for puberty or a character study. Every single character aside from Meiling and Ming is completely one-dimensional. I can't believe this was a Pixar film, as there was evidently no proper quality control involved in this movie. This film's stupid, manic energy actually ends up sinking it. There are like 2 good scenes, and one of them is mostly great because it doesn't have any dialogue (like the director's "Bao" short, which was very good). It seems like this film fell through the cracks during the Chapek takeover, and did not receive proper care and oversight. This was clearly a movie made by Millennial artists with mommy issues for Millennial artists with mommy issues. The early-2000s setting is barely utilized (I was a kid during that time too), whether it's in the dialogue/slang, fashion, trends, or general behaviors (compare to something like "The Wackness", which captures the '90s perfectly).

I haven't even gotten into the myriad problems with the story. Do you want to show your children that reckless, thoughtless selfishness and self-interest is a virtue? Do you want to see a film where children are not only rewarded for lying to their parents, sneaking out at night multiple times, and putting others in danger, but the mother is an overbearing, neurotic, controlling mess? (Not to mention our protagonist puts her friends, family, and tens of thousands at risk multiple times for a ****ing concert, but even after a wildly idiotic grand finale, that point is totally glazed over?!) Is your idea of a good movie one filled with cliches and cookie-cutter characters? Do you think stereotypical portrayals of Asians - both visually and in the script - are "wins" for "diversity" and "inclusion"? Do you enjoy the butt-ugly "CalArts" character design elements - noodle arms, bean mouths, and Mr. Potato Head-style facial expressions that don't squash or stretch faces at all? Then this dumb farce, totally inappropriate for anyone younger than 11, might just be for you.… Expand

Technically, I don't understand what the hell is going on with this movie either. The animation is so ridiculously sharp that there's never any contrast between the backgrounds and foregrounds. It hurt my eyes to even watch it.

In line with the strange trajectory of animated films creating unlikable protagonists, the main character is annoying as all hell. I'm also not sure what the message is supposed to be here: Is it about girls reaching adulthood? Is it a commentary about Tiger Parenting? It honestly doesn't matter, because the movie did nothing to make me care either way.

I'd skip this one unless you have small children who would appreciate the vibrant colors and sensory overload animation style. But even they might find this disappointing.… Expand

Totally unrealistic . At no point is this mother and her actions believable. She’s so far from reality I can’t empathise with her at all. I’m out. The worst part of this film however, is the lesson it tries to send out; why be a better person when you can embrace your mistakes as part of your personality? Wtf? It’s like saying “I just let a burglar loose, that’s part of who I am now”. There is a reason this film did not make it to theatres which Disney won’t tell us. It’s obvious, it’s because the movie sucks! The critics are trying to get people to believe it’s actually good while it obviously isn’t. Pixar has produced amazing classics like Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, etc, but this is not like the company I grew up with. I’m not too optimistic about their future at this point.… Expand

Could only make it through 20 min of this movie. Once the mom busted out the maxi pads I was done. Didn't think I could sit through another hour and twenty minutes of period jokes and a girl going through puberty. No thanks.

It's bad, ok yes, the animation is nice but the message is horrible. Personally, I would not have watched a movie that is so sexist, filled with adult jokes like stripper music and twerking, statements like "my panda (body), my choice" and encourages kids to lie and disobey their parents with absolutely zero consequences. Let's also ignore the fact that the first 20 minutes, the girls mom thinks she got her period. (the entire movie though relies heavily on that symbolism , including the title and how the main girl has to control her emotions, only to decide its OK to disobey her parents and get angry and out of control, screw the consequences. This ovie takes place in 2002, so I feel this movie has a limited target audience, mostly girls who were 13 in 2002. It had no good morals, the characters were oe demensional and annoying.… Expand

Woke is not the problem with this movie. The problem is the ending, which I imagine is entirely re-written for the Chinese market, in every measurable way our protagonist has become a worse person.

1. She is no longer a good student

2. She never deals with the fact she couldn't communicate with her mom

3. Rather than develop a relationship ala Brave her mom just gives up, "My panda my choice" after all...

4. If a 13-year-old understands the subtext, that 13 year old just heard a mom say - "Have unprotected sex I can't tell you what to do";

5. Tradition is the enemy, rather than the anchor in the end.

6. Moral defects are largely ignored because anger of any sort isn't allowed to have space. Anger isn't just some terrible emotion, I thought Pixar understood this.

7. The mom never deals with the fact her teenager has significant moral failings, its all swept under the rug.

8. At the end of the movie the audience is encouraged to be their unabashed selves - Temperance and prudence are vices, not virtue.

9. Watch Pinocchio deals with the same themes but teaches the lesson to reject the monster within rather than embrace it.

What is got right: 1. Puberty - it's actually a decent story until Act 3 when the writers seem to realize they were headed down a tried and true path and decided to jump off a cliff.

2. Funny- There are several funny parts

Disney ratings are off. Literally uses words like sexy and crap. I would’nt mind this if warned ahead because my kids is too young for this. Should’ve been PG13. A terrible cartoon. Instead of a kind and beautiful cartoon and pleasant sensations, I got a bunch of slop. For 20 years, anime has degraded and now this modern nonsense has been made 3d.

Somehow worse than Encanto. I will say that the music is better than Encanto even though Turning Red is not a musical. I will say that it pretty accurately depicts the chaos that is middle school.
