(Mild spoilers)
This is definitely one of Pixar's most controversial movies, if not the most controversial, and it's not particularly hard to see why, as certain scenes are kind of grown-up, while others are kinda cringe. Still, however, it addresses the topic of growing up, becoming a teenager, wanting to gain independence and having had enough of your parents wanting you to be perfect.

The panda obviously reflects how teenagers can go from happy to upset in just a few seconds (something I can confirm as a fellow teenager), while wanting to keep the identity of the panda instead of getting rid of it signifies that 1) you are a different person from your ancestors, you don't have to get rid of it just because they did and 2) even if you possess a dangerously powerful ability, if you learn how to control it, it can be beneficial rather than harmful (for example the part they took the photos etc).

Of course, the animation and the entire picture is top-tier, as it is most of the fine after all. So yeah there are a few controversial scenes and I get why some people dislike it, but in my opinion it addresses important topics in a fun way, which is why I think it's a great movie. Not the best Pixar movie, but definitely one of the best I've watched this year

The story is yet again, another woke take on the world. It present the men and boys has stupid, weak, and the women like the only strong characters. On top of that, the way the title reference to puberty, the film to menstruation is just downright awkward (to not use other words). It lack good humour and menstrual jokes are not funny (just imagine ejaculation jokes as comparison). The animation is good, but I though the character designs were not that great. Especially the facial animation was kind of stiff. The music was fine. I really like that they use Toronto for the location, but sadly, the family didn't have any Canadian speaking/expressions (even though they suppose to be there from a long time). I give the movie 58%. Sorry Pixar, but I don't think Ghibli made movies for the woke peoples. They made movies for everyone to enjoy. Expand

But the movie itself is not for the majority of the broad Pixar audience. That is to say, this movie is only potentially interesting for girls aged 10-14 who thinks going to a concert with 4 tween-boy idols are "Going to make us women"... It is so cringy. Soooo, soooo cringy.

The characters are so flat that I had zero interest in any of them. They seem to try to incorporate some of the emotion characters from Inside - but as actual humans. Doesn't work well. One character being "the angry one" and another character being "the stoic one" and so on.

Many reviewers here talk about disliking it for being woke. I couldn't care less. I don't dislike the movie for that as it's not something I tend to even notice. The movie is bad in itself.

Turning red is a triumphant coming of age story that's beaming in diversity (with Chinese, Korean and Indian characters) and rooted in cultural representation. People who think Turning red is centred on Asian culture only will be wrong, because the issues that it raises are as universal as they come; Turning red deftly handles the various themes it deals with, and delivers an easy form of humour to keep things gliding smoothly. The 2000s styling is also a beautiful choice. With a heartfelt story, stunning visuals and score, Turning red is undoubtedly one of the best animations of 2022. Expand

It is a heartwarming tale about friendship, family, traditionsI was skeptical first because it was not released in cinema which is normally a huge warning sign. However after the a bit awkwardly first few minutes the movie won me fully over. It is a heartwarming tale about friendship, family, traditions and finding your own way. The charming cast and immersive story are truly excellent. The story stars the 13 year old Meilin Lee (Mei) whose Chinese descendant family runs a temple dedicated to ancestor worship in Toronto (Canada). She is also a bit a child of two worlds as she has interests her parents especially her very traditional and overprotective mother Ming wouldn’t find good like the boygroup 4*Town. However unbeknownst to her there is a family secret involving the red pandas her ancestors loved. I stop here to avoid spoilers but say the movie posters alone spoil a lot. The story is amazing. There are so many elements like family relations, a tale of true friendship, traditions vs your own way, life choices, different world view and more. It is immersive, relatable and heartwarming. Also they do the heroes journey right. There are consequences and character developments. Many modern films fail here miserable. The final act is superb and the conclusion rounds up the great experience. I must praise the whole cats. Be it director Domee Shi who is along Julia Sho also the writer and the fantastic voice actors cast. Rosalie Chiang, Ava Morse, Maitreyi Ramkrishnan and Hyein Park are fully convincing and made you think you want friends like these. Sandra Oh as Ming is amazing and her more silent husband voiced by Orion Lee is sneakingly good too. I find no misstep here and praise the whole cast. The animations won me over too. A unique style and everything looks beautiful. Again no misstep. Overall this movie won me over and it is a shame that it was not released in cinema. I give a bonus point to reach a 10/10 as it felt bad to give a lower rating. Expand

Unfortunately, although the idea was interesting, it became predictable shortly and you started to wait for the end. The graphics were sloppy at some points, looked cheap, really not Pixar's style. Too overrated and overappreciated. PS, idk if their attitude helps the girl team, just saying, i don't think girls at that age do that, so I don't know what they are trying to expose.

But it’s her mum that isn’t believable. No mum would go out of her way to completely humiliate and socially destroy her daughter the way she does. The reason the girl turns into a giant red panda is because her mother is suppressing her daughter’s sexual desires for teenage boys. Is this movie for adults? Does Disney have the viewpoint I need to know how to educate my kids on the topic of puberty and how not to parent my child? I turned it off after about fifteen minutes because Turning Red is stupid. Totally unrealistic . At no point is this mother and her actions believable. She’s so far from reality I can’t empathise with her at all. I’m out. I lasted about fifteen minutes in so I don’t know how more tragic it becomes. Expand

I have to stop and think about anything positive I could possibly say about this diaper dumpster fire. There was maybe twice in the entire movie I smiled so there's that. Absolute Teen Wolf rip off. Otherwise I can't figure out who this movie was made for. Massive Asian stereotypes. If you're male you're going to pull a muscle with how many times you're going to cringe. If you're between 15 and 105 you're going to be aghast that this script was ever green lit. There is no chance in hell 90% of these positive reviews aren't Disney paid reviews. (Look up the 10/10 reviews and they're obviously fakes.) What mentally defunct executive sees a 13yr old girl twerking in front of her mom and thinks "kids movie"?!?! Twerking LITERALLY means "I want a you to f*** me in the a**.

Story: All adults are stupid and only the children "get it." The only coming of age trope cliche that wasn't used was SHE NEVER EVEN LEARNED ANYTHING. She decides she really is so much smarter than all the adults and decides to stay a panda. Also, boy bands are SOOO sweet and ANY price is not too high to go to a concert. There was nothing learned here in any way, shape, or form. You need to tiptoe just so you don't fall into any of the massive plot holes.

This is absolutely a show teen girls SHOULDN'T be watching cause it tells them they're right, your priorities should be about boys, instant gratification, and everyone else is clueless.

It's really sad how far Pixar has fallen. I thought they'd hit rock bottom but with this it's apparent they started digging a hole. The animation was sub-90s Nickelodeon quality and the art style has less effort put into it than a laxative commercial with bean mouths and heads. This surpasses bad, passes "so bad it's good", and reaches so bad no one should watch it even to laugh at it.

I can't imagine anything being worse this entire decade and we're only in 2022.

It was noticeable to me that all the male characters were arbitrary and when shown were emasculated throughout. Not sure I felt comfortable with this new direction Pixar are taking with their newer films. Scenes filled with unnecessary levels of woke-ness aside this is basically a Ranma1/2 inspired anime style female version of teen wolf without the superior storyline. As entertaining as it was, this was not a scratch on Pixar's best. Expand

I loved the colors, the story and the characters. If it's a bit cringy at times it's only because it's doing a good job at protraying young teenagers. One of the best Pixar movies I've seen in years.

The writing was exceptional, it was such a funny and touching movie with a beautiful story about family, finding out who you are as an individual away from your family, being true to yourself, and realizing being perfect isn't a thing; I loved how they used the red panda to symbolize going through puberty and the emotions and things that people though that come with it. That, or it's the RACIAL & CULTURAL DIVERSITY in Toronto. Was it too much for u that she only has 1 white friend, likes the black kid in 4 Town & the security guard was Sikh? Toronto is one of the MOST DIVERSE cities on the planet & the film accurately depicts that. AND WE LOVE IT.

Growing up with an Asian mom who STIFLED my hopes & dreams as a kid & teen WAS ROUGH. This film connected with so many of us who went thru that. I was over 30 years old before she finally said "It's ok to pursue what makes u happy" after she essentially had a mid-life crisis.

Our twin 5 year olds LOVED THE FILM, have watched it COUNTLESS TIMES & have been singing the songs for WEEKS NOW.

It's so sad that a segment of our community is so OBSESSED with their culture war grievances that they have to TRASH DISNEY/PIXAR FILMS...ur kids would be ASHAMED OF YOU.

We know that Disney has become political but we set aside those facts and just wanted to enjoy this new film. But good god this was terrible. How does it have a 6.4 score? Disney bots? I would give it a 3 but I feel like I need to pull its undeserved score down as far as I possibly can. Pixar has been ruined by left wing politics. I know this because woke politics ruin everything; after all, the entire purpose of wokeness is to "deconstruct" and rebuild things in their image. Well, it looks like Pixar was deconstructed and what was built in its place is a hollow, shallow, shell of what used to be. Keep hiring based on race and sex, Disney, because that seems to be working out real well for your intellectual properties. LOL. This movie sucks BAD. My girlfriend and I shut it off halfway through. I felt like it had no stakes. Just an insane mother, a weak father, and an obnoxious children. But they have to get to the concert! I kept asking myself, why is the concert this important? I understand that being a child can come with obsessions, but holy cow, this concert is like life or death to these kids and it just doesn't translate to audiences. There is no good villain other than the insane mother. It's just a really bad film. Expand

This however, is a new low and might even be worse than Cars 3. The characters were all highly unlikeable and annoying and it’s easy to want to see them suffer. But of course, they get no consequences for their actions. The animation was visually ugly to look at, the jokes were not funny at all. The worst part of this film however, is the lesson it tries to send out; why be a better person when you can embrace your mistakes as part of your personality? Wtf? It’s like saying “I just let a burglar loose, that’s part of who I am now”. There is a reason this film did not make it to theatres which Disney won’t tell us. It’s obvious, it’s because the movie sucks! The critics are trying to get people to believe it’s actually good while it obviously isn’t. Pixar has produced amazing classics like Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, etc, but this is not like the company I grew up with. I’m not too optimistic about their future at this point. Expand

Deep in my soul, I feel that my 13-year old self with all of her energy, her fears, her hopes, and even her cringey pre-teen imaginative fantasies-- is seen, heard, and acknowledged. The film creatively addresses topics related to adolescence and growing up in a real, yet light-hearted way.

I can see this film grow with the young people of today, and becoming even more appreciated far beyond their awkward pre-teen years. For children, the material in this movie may not be fully understood, yet it foreshadows what is to come and normalizes it as a rite of passage. I envision Turning Red being a powerful conversation starter amongst many families.

It’s a good movie don’t get me wrong but it wasn’t super memorable. It was very sweet though. The characters are fun and it’s a nice story about coming into your own and making your own decisions. The art style is different from Pixar but I did like it. I liked that it was different and that its character designs were unique compared to other Pixar films. The writing isn’t anything too special. It services the story nicely but it doesn’t really stand out in anything other than animation and character designs. The story was nice and sweet but I wasn’t fully engaged with it. The film was also kind of annoying to sit through for the first 30 minutes but it got better as it went along. The voice acting is pretty good. I can’t pinpoint one performance that I loved or hated. Everyone did a good job. The humor definitely was hit or miss. When it landed, it really landed. The film can be REALLY funny sometimes but other times the jokes just didn’t work. The animation is beautiful as always. The environments looked gorgeous. Even though I wasn’t fully engaged with this, it was still a fun time. I would recommend checking this out if you like Pixar or want something a little different from them. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Turning Red is an okay movie. I was expecting it to be much worse, thanks to the goofy trailers they showed us, but it's still not enough to shine, yet another proof that movies are currently in a crisis of decline. But let's start talking about the good instead of this nonsense verbiage, okay? Okay. First of all, this movie is full of messages. Pretty good about it, both very subtly and overtly. Some moments of humor are good, and the animation really helps keep several moments entertaining overall. The animation is not too bad in general either, although later I will have to mention something that some may not like.
Already focusing on the bad, because the same as always, it's too cliche and predictable. And when I say too much, I mean TOO MUCH. It doesn't even try, the plot is just too basic. Although they end up saving their messages and humorous situations, some of these scenes are very forced or have nonsense, like when Mei Li enters the stadium with her powers near the end, which makes about half of the movie an amazing padding. Why she and their friends didnt enter on the first place? And how all of the Mei Li parents enter like nothing without paying 200 dollars each one? There´also a lot of cringe situations, and some people may say that "duh, they are 13 year old girls", like if that would fix anything, no, thats not how things work. And for last, although this is something minor, while i said that the animation is good overall, the colour is very saturated sometimes. I had to look around only to take a break. While is not a negative point and it didnt bother me too much, probably it would annoy some people.
Despiteeeeee everything, is a movie worth watching, so anyway, my irrelevant opinion is reflected like always, and if you disagree, i dont care.
