Excellent movie with really awesome animation, camera angles, soundtrack. The storyline is really entertaining and funny and it explains some of the changes that teenagers could go through while growing up, mostly for girls. Recommended.

I’m a big fan of Pixar’s catalog up until this point, there have been hits and misses, but mostly hits. But after seeing this atrocity, I have to say, Cars 2 has some competition for worst Pixar film.

The story is about a rebellious young girl who twerks at her mom and discusses periods. Oh, and she often turns into a big red panda and makes sure everyone knows that it’s “her panda, her choice.” There is also an anti-God narrative and involves the spirit realm and worshiping their ancestors. For the second movie in a row, there is a husband who is an absolute dope, who’s wife wears the pants in the family. Need I say more? I haven’t even scratched the surface. If you want your child to turn into some type of crazy person, go ahead and let them soak this one in. Pixar has totally let us down with this movie. The visual quality even looks worse than Luca. The writing is just ridiculous and the characters are not relatable or interesting. In fact, the main character is reprehensible and annoying. I can’t think of many redeeming qualities this film has. I suppose it can be someone’s guilty pleasure…maybe? It feels like a movie that was just phoned in, one that lacks direction or passion. It cares more about sending left-leaning, woke messages to the audience than trying to entertain.

In summary, Turning Red made me turn red with anger. Well, and put me to sleep. I can’t believe I’m saying this about a Pixar film! Is this even reality? With how political Disney has become over recent years, I shouldn’t be that surprised. Looks like it’s happening at Pixar too. Cars 2 no longer has to hold that final spot, so congrats Lightning, you’re now back on the lead lap.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a 34-year-old Asian man and I find this movie totally dumb and weak. The script and plot are all over the place. After the cliche info-dump at exactly the 30-minute mark, I nearly turned it off. What surprised me is the plot didn't follow or respect its own made-up lore rules. "Turning Red" doesn't know whether it wants to be an allegory for puberty or a character study. Every single character aside from Meiling and Ming is completely one-dimensional. I can't believe this was a Pixar film, as there was evidently no proper quality control involved in this movie. This film's stupid, manic energy actually ends up sinking it. There are like 2 good scenes, and one of them is mostly great because it doesn't have any dialogue (like the director's "Bao" short, which was very good). It seems like this film fell through the cracks during the Chapek takeover, and did not receive proper care and oversight. This was clearly a movie made by Millennial artists with mommy issues for Millennial artists with mommy issues. The early-2000s setting is barely utilized (I was a kid during that time too), whether it's in the dialogue/slang, fashion, trends, or general behaviors (compare to something like "The Wackness", which captures the '90s perfectly).

I haven't even gotten into the myriad problems with the story. Do you want to show your children that reckless, thoughtless selfishness and self-interest is a virtue? Do you want to see a film where children are not only rewarded for lying to their parents, sneaking out at night multiple times, and putting others in danger, but the mother is an overbearing, neurotic, controlling mess? (Not to mention our protagonist puts her friends, family, and tens of thousands at risk multiple times for a ****ing concert, but even after a wildly idiotic grand finale, that point is totally glazed over?!) Is your idea of a good movie one filled with cliches and cookie-cutter characters? Do you think stereotypical portrayals of Asians - both visually and in the script - are "wins" for "diversity" and "inclusion"? Do you enjoy the butt-ugly "CalArts" character design elements - noodle arms, bean mouths, and Mr. Potato Head-style facial expressions that don't squash or stretch faces at all? Then this dumb farce, totally inappropriate for anyone younger than 11, might just be for you.

Though I can't really help but cringe at some parts, I also can't help but admire the aesthetics, themes, and characters in the movie. The animation is always so good as expected of Pixar. The characters have their own unique lovable qualities. The themes they tried to convey are true to life, though some were executed in a way not so relatable to everyone (including me) like the expensive boy band concerts. I'd definitely spend that much money for something else—though I understand the desire to spend money on something you love.

Overall, just a nice watch and heartwarming at the end too. I got drawn in and had difficulty getting up the couch to pee, because I didn't want to miss anything.

Unikaj turning red

Could have explored more it's themes but you can't expect more from Disney.
Probably better for teenagers and adults than children, not because it will "pervert" anyone, but they won't understand a lot of it.

This movie has sexualized content, maxi pads, and other content that many parents of young kids will want to avoid. PG13 might have been a better approach since this is geared for puberty aged kids. But really I’m not sure it’s geared for any kids unless kids arguing with their parents, a Disney staple if the parents aren’t dead, and kids doing stripper dancing shaking their behind bent over at their mom is the norm in their family. It is not in mine. In other words it is cringe. Expand

This latest features a 13-year-old Asian girl who turns into a giant red panda anytime she gets excited. While her overbearing mother tries to help her cope with the family curse, her friends scheme with her to get to a concert featuring the latest boy band (their appropriately K-pop songs were written by Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell). While it's undeniable that the energy never lags and the animation is lively (and sometimes lovely), the characters are seldom unique, which gives it less comic heft. As Pixar expands their audience to more mature subjects (getting her period is addressed), they're keeping the playful energy, but sacrificing some of the clever fun. For young women, this should certainly appeal. Expand

Woke is not the problem with this movie. The problem is the ending, which I imagine is entirely re-written for the Chinese market, in every measurable way our protagonist has become a worse person.

1. She is no longer a good student

2. She never deals with the fact she couldn't communicate with her mom

3. Rather than develop a relationship ala Brave her mom just gives up, "My panda my choice" after all...

4. If a 13-year-old understands the subtext, that 13 year old just heard a mom say - "Have unprotected sex I can't tell you what to do";

5. Tradition is the enemy, rather than the anchor in the end.

6. Moral defects are largely ignored because anger of any sort isn't allowed to have space. Anger isn't just some terrible emotion, I thought Pixar understood this.

7. The mom never deals with the fact her teenager has significant moral failings, its all swept under the rug.

8. At the end of the movie the audience is encouraged to be their unabashed selves - Temperance and prudence are vices, not virtue.

9. Watch Pinocchio deals with the same themes but teaches the lesson to reject the monster within rather than embrace it.

What is got right: 1. Puberty - it's actually a decent story until Act 3 when the writers seem to realize they were headed down a tried and true path and decided to jump off a cliff.

2. Funny- There are several funny parts

3. The animation style and call back to Anime movies

Other notes: This is not a movie for kids under 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What I have to say ist that the Animation of Pixar is getting better. From Toy Story to Cars has Turning Red also a good Graphic and Look! The Story was nice, but I saw better Movies from Pixar. The first 10 minutes are unfortunately bad. It look like a "Teenage cringe Moments" BUT after it´s getting better. How the Protagonist is trying to control her emotions is such a good Message. just not for her, it´s the same for everyone in this Movie. If I could delete one thing in this Movie, it will be the "4town"... Just no. Also the final Showdown isn´t amazing, because her Mom as the Panda looks dangerous but she isn´t. she just screaming her daughter to punish for what she did.

But still, I recommend this film anyway. Bye!

Unlike the topic 'Being yourself' from other films and television works, discussion about Chinese and women's exploration is taken to the top floor. The seemingly exaggerated expression method integrates the traditional concepts with trendy ideas: one side singing 4town boy's Pop song and the other side the old Cantonese chorus, Pop song finally outweighs Cantonese and became the sound from the heart. If the reminiscence of turning is just a plot, or something that people can't imagine in real life, just let us think about it. After all, nothing stays the same all the time, and we will still miss the past, but so what? We still need to turn into a small panda to twist your fart in front of the old generation. Expand

That’s your job. The movie was funny, cute, honest to the struggles of adolescent identity, and how much stress there is in growing from childhood into adolescence. Great fun and playful. Not for smaller children. Just because it’s animation does not mean it’s for children. Themes that address a different cultural perspective than most sheltered white people are accustomed to seeing, and easily accessible if you’re not racist. Made me think of insideFrom fairytale to furry tail. Much better than expected. Really funny and bold lessons about growing up, the connection between a child becoming teenager and her mother and the rest of the family is very well painted. Made me think of inside out, who was also talking about a young girl going through transformations in a her brain instead of her body in red alert. But here, the rhythm is better, I laughed a lot, the attention to detail is not really in how things look like (it’s Pixar, looks like Pixar) but how all these characters move, the lips, the hips, the eyebrows, the way they walk, the animation is really fantastic and brings another layer to understand the difference between what we say and what we think or how we feel : you don’t have to show how 5 little things in the brain fight to take decisions, you just have to read the face, an ode to non verbal communication. The secondary characters are also very good, for example even the dad is such a loving and fun character finding his place among all those women. All in all, I wish everybody could watch this film, as the message behind it, about how we can respect one another even as we are evolving, how love is shown by accepting that others also can change, how over controlling oneself and others has maybe more down sides than giving some space to our inner energy… life is complicated, latest Pixar may have been messy, but this one finally finds the right balance. Maybe it’s actually about Pixar itself becoming a teenager asking to Mama Disney to let it grow up, and that everything will be ok. Expand

It was cute! It isn’t the best Pixar movie of all time but it was really good, and it’s something new.

Yes, it covers periods, but in a largely abstract way, it isn’t a biology class video like some of these reviews seem to indicate. They do also use the word stripper and I think the word sexy. It’s really not the end of the world.

Honestly I thought the real heart of the film was about the lead character finding herself in her friendships and her relationship with her mother and culture. A very interesting concept in my opinion. The connections felt very genuine and I thought it had valuable thoughts on the above.

As for “wokeness” I’m pretty sure anything that isn’t about a white American Hardee’s burger marrying an apple pie shaped like a Chevy Camaro is going to get criticized as “woke” now days. It’s ok for movies to offer new perspectives or thoughts. In fact, it keeps our movies interesting.

The panda-persona is our 13-year-old-girl protagonist's pent-up emotions pushing to the surface at the onset of puberty, including but not limited to humorously innocent "sexy thoughts", Tina Belcher style. At first I was surprised they'd make a kids movie about a sexual awakening, but really, why not? It happens to all of us. Kids who are too young to understand won't care, and now when it happens they'll have a familiar, harmless, low-stakes launching point for understanding and conversation. For the movie alone, I'd give it a 7.5, but I'm giving it a 9 because serving this age and gender an adventure on the reality of their upcoming sexuality is risky. And, considering how controversial it is proving, it was a risk that maybe should've been taken a long time ago. Expand

Pixar returns with another movie that is, unfortunately, going straight to Disney+ with little recognition or fanfare about it. Pixar movies were usually the animated movies that everyone was talking about but I barely heard anyone talk aboutPixar returns with another movie that is, unfortunately, going straight to Disney+ with little recognition or fanfare about it. Pixar movies were usually the animated movies that everyone was talking about but I barely heard anyone talk about this one. The premise is "Mei Lee is a 13-year-old girl who is torn between being her mother's obedient daughter and the chaos of her youth. As if that were not enough, when she gets too excited, she turns into a big red panda". Is this a sleeper hit or is this going to be a Pixar movie people forget?

Let's get the obvious out of the way first. This movie is visually great with its phenomenal animation. The character designs, the city and the panda itself are all wonderfully pleasant. There is a lot of anime-inspired influences within the film and it certainly shows in the visuals. It's a mostly grounded movie but when the magical stuff happens, the usual Pixar magic occurs and it is great! For example, there is a nightmare sequence and it is just ridiculously weird, which I love. The cinematography is great as usual with some stellar shots. Ludwig Göransson who is the music composer for Black Panther, Tenet and The Mandalorian is composing for Turning Red (2022). He does a good job with his utilization of Chinese wind instruments, which helps capture the feel of the film. There is also a music segment that combines Cantonese chants with a pop song and Ludwig is somehow able to make that work!

Turning Red is a coming of age story which has been overdone and it is also obvious from the first 10 minutes what the message at the end is going to be. Yet despite that, I came out enjoying the story and being completely satisfied by where the characters end up. The main character, Mei, and her relationship with her mother is the heart of the film. It's a good focus as I found their love for each other very heart-warming. Thus, when there is a conflict between them, it is genuinely quite sad to see which shows how effective the movie was. Likewise, the friendship between Mei and her friends is also very touching. It's also the first Pixar film to focus on Asian culture which I appreciate. There isn't a lot of western films that focus on Asian culture so it was nice that Pixar was willing to do so. It does have a lot of Asian culture in it but I don't think it ever gets to the point that it isolates non-Asian's enjoyment of it.

However, the humour is very cringy and not funny whatsoever. The voice performance of the main character Mei is also a bit of mix bag as she has the same tone in every scene. It is also difficult to connect with the main character because she is so hyperactive and obsessed with boys which makes it hard to sympathize or root for her.

Overall, I am glad that Pixar tried to do something unique. It has a heart-warming family story in it that is unfortunately squandered by how the main character is written. It's great that Asians are getting more representation in western movies but I don't think this was the exact right approach. It is still an enjoyable coming of age story and I think the good elements outweigh the weird negatives of Turning Red.

A movie about a girl who is coming of age who turns into a red panda with mood swings and who’s mother thinks has also started menstruating. Didn’t expect Disney to do such a gross and on the nose innuendo by calling it ‘Turning red’.
It also seems to exclude a male audience by focusing on young girls obsessing (in quite an inappropriate way for young viewers) about pre-pubescent pop stars in the 90’s. Disney has usually got the balance right these last few years but the is just felt off.
Also a strong anime style influence which is interesting but seems out of place in a Disney film.
The submissive males is also an odd take.

I love animated films and have absolutely no reservations about family films. Turning Red is now one of my favorite films from this area and now shares here purely with Zoomania and How to train your dragon.

It is clear that the film was made by women for women. With the focus on teenage girls and mothers dealing with the generational conflicts with their mother and their teenage children. The leadership of the production team consisted of four women, here and there a look more from the point of view of a man would certainly not have harmed the film, but it's OK.

More than that. In many negative reviews, the female point of view is punished with zero stars and implied with the reasoning that a girls-only movie should not come from Disney/Pixars or in 2022 sexual development should not be touched upon . But hey, at least in Europe sexual education is already much deeper in elementary school - Not to mention at 13 years old in high school. Maybe one or the other is still a bit prudish here. That being said, with all the predominantly male films, it's also OK to have another boost for films from the female point of view. And if you're a little open-minded and like animated films and/or family films in general, you'll enjoy this film as a male as well.

I also engage with the technology and creativity in movies/games and can see this film's own animation style. The director describes it as omarge to the 90's and 2000's animated series and comics and it often looks like that. It's definitely not a throwback, it's a comic book or cartoony animated film and that's totally OK too. You just have to get into it and not expect photorealism or smooth movements.

The film is about a Canadian girl with Chinese roots. Unlike Mulan, I can't see any consideration for Chinese politics here. It just happens to be a girl with immigrants from China and otherwise it would not work with the story. The film is definitely predominantly Western.

In the end, I'm left with a film whose ending could have been a bit stronger and where a look more from a male point of view certainly wouldn't have hurt. But neither of those two points really pulls the film down, at least not for me.

On the positive side are 91min with a crisply told story without dragging everything out unnecessarily, a successful and consistently persistent animation style, a musical score which carries you through the story from beginning to end, and a modern humor which takes the sometimes difficult seeming puberty and generational conflicts yet again simple and direct.

In short, turning red is a very good animated film for the family and especially probably adolescent young women!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the best Pixar movies I have seen since “Soul”. And actually, it’s better than “Soul”. I went in with very low expectations. Especially after Disney’s recent masterpiece “Encanto”. “Turning Red” is a beautiful and heartwarming film that anyone who has been through puberty should be able to relate to. I did not have a messy puberty. I did not fall out with my family or turn into an angry monster. But I still found this character compelling and relatable. There will definitely be aspects you will relate to more if you are asian or a girl/woman, but I don’t think you need to exist inside that demographic to get something from this movie. It’s just as easily about trying to discover yourself with the knowledge that who you really are may be initially disapproving to your family or friend groups, but you should go be your awesome self and they will still love you. Technically, I don't understand what the hell is going on with this movie either. The animation is so ridiculously sharp that there's never any contrast between the backgrounds and foregrounds. It hurt my eyes to even watch it.

In line with the strange trajectory of animated films creating unlikable protagonists, the main character is annoying as all hell. I'm also not sure what the message is supposed to be here: Is it about girls reaching adulthood? Is it a commentary about Tiger Parenting? It honestly doesn't matter, because the movie did nothing to make me care either way.

I'd skip this one unless you have small children who would appreciate the vibrant colors and sensory overload animation style. But even they might find this disappointing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you are thinking about watching Turning Red, here's a good review. Personally, I would not have watched a movie that is so sexist, filled with adult jokes like stripper music and twerking, statements like "my panda (body), my choice" and encourages kids to lie and disobey their parents with absolutely zero consequences. Let's also ignore the fact that the first 20 minutes, the girls mom thinks she got her period. (the entire movie though relies heavily on that symbolism , including the title and how the main girl has to control her emotions, only to decide its OK to disobey her parents and get angry and out of control, screw the consequences. This ovie takes place in 2002, so I feel this movie has a limited target audience, mostly girls who were 13 in 2002. It had no good morals, the characters were oe demensional and annoying. Expand

Turning Red is fun, humorous and has an excellent animation quality, as always the case with Pixar. It's of course their trademark and still works great, but I really think this will be one of the studio's most forgettable films by far.

As someone who is neither Chinese nor Canadian I still find this film so relatable. So reviews claiming the target audience is niche are way off base. One of the best things about this film was the representation of real genuine human beings. From the animated characters to the actual people behind the movie. The characters were representative of the people you see in every day life—different races, different weights, different styles, and the 13 year old characters actually looked liked real 13 year olds braces and freckles and all! Refreshing to see. Then I watched the behind the scenes and got to see the people behind the movie were majority Asian and female (AMAZING). So many movies based on certain races or cultures maybe have a handful of that race or culture actually on staff. I'm so happy this movie was different. This movie deserves to be Pixars highest grossing movie. It is absolutely phenomenal. I don't want to give any spoilers but to see an awkward weird main character who doesn't tone is down is exactly what I wish I could see represented when I was that age. As a current weird girl who has always been "too much" for others I used to be so self conscious about it. I have grown to love it now but this movie is monumental to see that representated in the media in a positive way. Expand

I can't believe this is a "Pixar" movie, the animation super company that made my childhood and never disappointed me. I never thought one day i would say this but unfortunately today is the day: Pixar made a "garbage" movie!
The animation style and graphics can't compare to the achievement of their latest efforts like "Soul" etc. It looks a 2nd-rate Asian animated movie that Netflix would only give them a chance and broadcast it.
The story and characters are very forgettable, unoriginal and uninspired and these adjectives are unlike anything Pixar normally is.
How on earth did they come from Woody and WALL.E to this annoying girl? How the hell their challenging and breaking-you-down-in-tears stories become so average and predictable? Well I might have an answer: the only thing Hollywood matters in recent years is being politically correct, respectful to the movements, Hashtags etc. and in one word "Woke". Just watch it and you will find out what I mean, or don't waste your time and go see Toy Story again.

'Turning Red' is a very good flick from Disney/Pixar. It's different in a way, I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out based on the first few minutes but by the end it provides the required and expected amount of entertainment and meaning.

The voice cast are excellent, I have no faults with them. Rosalie Chiang gives a performance full of energy in the lead role, while Sandra Oh puts in a strong display alongside Chiang. The rest of them are good too, as I also recognised James Hong and Lori Tan Chinn. Us UK viewers also have the bonus of a small role for Anne-Marie.

Disney Pixar's Turning Red is an amazing film about family and letting go of children when they come of age and be themselves. The main lead of the movie is so charming and good and also the emotional moments are very effective too.
