Starring Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, this rebooted version follows a reluctant and headstrong hero, rather than the over-the-top teenage dream of past years. The story follows Lara as she uncovers the truth about her missing father's work as an intrepid explorer, leading her to a mysterious island in the Devil's Sea where she faces off against a bad archaeologist, Mathias Vogel (Goggins). Though the plot is predictable and the dialogue is flawed, the movie is anchored by Vikander's tireless lead performance and it's one of the better video game adaptations out there. The movie's visual and musical elements are strong, but the ending is rushed and weak.
_____________________________

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This really is a movie that is just as you'd expect - rather formulaic and reliant on CGI/effects and action scenes to keep you watching. Of course im sure that it will have done well from male fans of Jolie who will/will have enjoyed watching gun-toting Jolie in her skimpy skin revealing garb, full of attitude and so on, that will have been the main pull of the movie, although I discovered that actually the case is more varied and interesting, including not just ms Pitt but also Daniel Craig (who I could have sworn had a pretty cringeworthy accent feature in at least one scene, though later on I didn't notice it, which is a bit strange, maybe I mis-heard?) and even Chris Barrie, which I thought was rather random!. I'll admit to having never played the video games that this movie is based on but then I'm reviewing the movie rather than the game, so I suppose it shouldn't matter too much, although I used to be quite a fan of video games, particularly platform games and watching this movie I could see at some points clues as to what the games must be like, with some of Lara's movements and actions, I suppose.

A little bit of trivia thats worth mentioning, I suppose, is that Jon Voight, ie Angeline Jolie-Pitt's father, stars in this movie as Lara Croft's late father. I believe this was the first movie that Angelina starred alongside her father and with him playing her characters father, I suppose there's maybe an irony there, also I know that in real life father and daughter haven't got along too well and in the movie, she wishes that she had more time with her father, so I wonder if this hit home with her at all? probably not, I think it was after this movie was shot when the relationship went a bit sour but anyway, thats not got alot to do with the movie but I thought it may be interesting for any movie fans who weren't aware of it.

Back to my thoughts on the movie and really its a very bog standard action movie that is pretty superficial, as you may expect. It relies mainly on visual aspects to keep you entertained, though I would say that as the movie heads towards its climax with Lara Croft, Alex West (Daniel Craig's character) and Manfred Powell battling it out for the triangle, it is quite entertaining and there are certainly enough CGI/visual effects to make it worth watching. The movie is partly set in Cambodia and there are some nice shots of the jungle based area there with some children playing about which is quite nice to see, plus the action scenes are decent enough, so its not a totally rubbish film but neither is it one that really grabs my attention. I would have thought that fans of movies such as the Indiana Jones movies may be keen to see this, as it has a somewhat similar premise, only that here the 'Tomb raider' aka someone who invades ancient tombs/cave like areas in search of ancient old artefacts etc. (which is surely similar to what Indiana Jones does?) is female. I don't think I've bothered with the Indiana Jones movies so again I apologise but I can't really comment on how it compares but from the clips I've seen of those movies, thats what comes to mind in terms of similar movies.

In this instance, I'd say that this is perhaps more for fans of the video game or otherwise, fans of general action movies looking for an easy watch as this movie certainly doesn't require your brain to be switched on, put it that way, infact it could be a bit of a nuisance as I remember thinking at times that the plot seemed a bit dis-jointed (I thought Lara had under 10 hours to find the two parts of the triangle and later on her colleague seems to say that there's 15 hours left?!) but then its not meant to be about the story really, lets face it. Its all about the effects, the CGI/effects and the cast and the cast I found quite amusing at times and I thought that the effects made it pretty entertaining, so I can't totally dismiss it, as im sure some people (male admirers of Jolie-Pitt for the most part, thougj Daniel Craig fans may also enjoy it - there is one scene where he gets out of the shower in his suite naked and walks around the room but alas not all is actually shown lol...not that he's my type but anywhhoooo) will enjoy it at least in part at least.

I suppose I should say that I like that this movie seems to have a good mix of US and UK acting talent, from Chris Barrie and Daniel Craig to Jon Voight and Angelina Jolie/Jolie-Pitt, although, as I've hinted at already, this is by far an oustanding movie but I suppose it isn't too often that you see a cast like this in such a Hollywood movie (and this is a particularly 'Hollywood' movie).

She alwaysWaaaay overused "sprout" nickname, silly overused kiss on the fingers and stretch out hand gesture. Annoying fight scenes where Lara kicks less ass than her opponents even though she is trained in martial arts and they are not. She always gets beaten down again and again, and only when the fight has gone on for a while does she start to overtake even a little bit. Why can't she just be bad-ass!? It's infuriating to watch the bad guys get so much head-room.

I get that this is sort of an origin story for Lara Croft, so she can't be superb at everything she does. But it just doesn't work well in this case.

The overall plot is ok but it's bogged down by clichés. It always does what you guess it will do - quite predictable in a bad way.
It also tries to be witty here and there, but it doesn't really work. It's more like dad-joke witty (which can be fun in other contexts mind you) than clever witty.

Alicia did a good job as Lara and I'd say she's the only reason to watch the movie. Her performance at least raises the movie to a level where it's watchable. Without her it would be a slog-fest. Yes, it manages to be quite boring too. And the predictability is to blame much of the time.

Example: Lara arrives at a port to search for a ship. She carries her bag over one shoulder very loosely. I instantly thought "She gon' get roooobb'd". 10 seconds later 3 lads show up, clearly up to no good. They ask her "Whatcha' doin' in our neighborhood? . . . Do you need help?". What does Lara do? She says "Yeah, actually I do, I need to find this boat" and moves up to them, bag swinging right up under their noses. And yes, they of course grab it and start running off. Cue long boring chase scene...

Some scenes also seems to have been added to make it look like the newer video games. I'd rather just play the game, thank you very much. They don't add anything either, other than being a "Wow, that's just like in the video game!". So I guess it's what they call fan service. I didn't care for it, even though I did like the games.

So, what's good about it? Let me think... I liked the first 20 minutes or so. I think it portrayed a rootless Lara pretty well. I also liked the Lu Ren character, but he's unfortunately only used in a few scenes. They should have spend more time on that. They acted well together and gave the movie some much-needed character substance.

The antagonists are mostly just the boring brute type. No identity other than loving to shoot their guns in the air whenever they are happy about something.

There was more or less always something going on in the beginning, but as time went on the movie picked up a little more pace and I enjoyed that. Mostly it comes down to the change of location and that is of course the island. The action scenes were great. The story was good too. What I still liked was the end of the movie where there was a little reveal the last scene was awesome. For me a good movie that I recommend. Expand

I first saw the movie in cinema when it was released, and now, on a second view, on DVD, I have the same feeling as I'm watching a nice-to-see action movie.

The movie respects the game story and universe, especially the Tomb Raider game released in 2013, from which the plot story is inspired.

It remains to see if a sequel comes at the same scale.

She even CHEATS in a for-money and on-the-streets bike race on the streets of London that would, in reality, have injured or killed several innocent bystanders. Not off to the most sympathetic of starts, for the character OR the movie (at least not in my book)!

Fortunately, things pick up substantially after we leave the early urban environments, and in no time we're launched into a suitably rollicking Indiana Jones-esque adventure with the odd moment of iffy CGI. It's a very decent ride just the same - if more than a bit predictable - and probably about as good as the first Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider movie, and slightly better than the second, so...a perfectly solid modern blockbuster, even if it's barely a patch on Raiders of the Lost Ark. (Hell: even the Brendan Fraser version of The Mummy ain't THAT good!)

They mainly used the well made and received 2013 video game reboot as template for the story. They also made deviations from that story and it surprisingly works well. I played ant enjoyed the game so I was pleased with the setting and surprisingly even more with the changes. It is the story of a young Lara Croft who starts her first adventure. Her father went missing some time ago and is declared dead. She is struggling to accept it and the fortune she will inherit. She believes that her father is alive and wants to find him on her own. I stop here with just the set up and only say that the story is engaging with good twist and menacing obstacles. I like what they created. Especially one menace you will easily know which makes this movie brilliant. For the actors they chose well. Alicia Vikander is excellent and was nominated for the Oscar for the Danish Girl. She delivers the role of a hero in the making or unpolished diamond. It is more grounded and I know that this is a hilarious remark for a video game adaptation but it is fitting here. Walton Goggins is a excellent adversary and shines in his scenes. Daniel Wu and Kristin Scott Thomas have smaller roles but do their best. The interactions are good but I think they could do better. The sets and visuals are really good. I like also the puzzles and obstacles they have to overcome. There are of cause some bad things. One plot twist is generic and out of touch or unbelievable. It harms the movie. Lara / Alicia cant shine as much as she should. She is hold back by the script. Also she makes a dumb move. If she inherited the fortune she would have solved many problems with ease and it changes nothing. A signature under a contract / testament is not the same as admitting your father is dead. At the end I will also praise the resolve and set up for a sequel. You want more and to see how it will continue. Overall a good video game adaptation with some flaws that prevent a 10/10 rating. It is still a really good movie and I just read that a sequel is on the way for 2021. Expand

The original source in quality was below average. Except in the film there is no third of what was in the game. Ultimately, the film slips into a parody altogether, in which it is unclear whether the film originally wanted to be shot as cheaper and easier as possible or whether the film is counted strictly on fans of the series. The main antagonist is devoted to less than 5 minutes of timing, the conflict is not revealed. Judging by the installation, the action of the film unfolds on a small island, where there is nothing except the tomb. And the end of the film, in which the hint of a sequel causes longing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Game is top and the film is flop.

This Film doesnt have much good to talk about. I liked some parts and some direct adaptions from the Game are very cool to look at, but thats it. Everything else is replacable and they just put all action standards in the film but lacking anything interesting.

The Characters are all complete lifeless figures and didnt played very well. Lara Croft is from her looking a good fitting choice but she also couldnt bring Life to her Character. The enemy is just boring.

The Scenery is just bad, all CGI scenes are horrible, it just doesnt look good. It tries to copy so much of other good films in the genre but missed everything which made other films special.

So just play the game and forget that there is a Film about it.

Alicia Vikander plays a great part and you are rooting for her all the way. Tense and action packed, but does not quite hit the mark for me to give it a higher score.

Tomb Raider is a good attempt to adapt the videogame, but in the end it's just a movie that Alicia Vikander takes behind her back to save her.

Vikander is hired to attract the boys and she does it well going by the reviews but that's it. After just over a half an hour the movie turns into a cheap action movie made by a student. She barely can't lift her legs (or even her arms) in fight scenes. Lot's of cuts needed to make a fight coherent. And so on and so on.

Conclusion: if you're a seventeen year old boy then you could download this movie and get off on Vikander and b-movie action - don't pay for it - otherwise forget about it and move on.

Dose anyone remember when this came out? Because I didn't until now.

'Tomb Raider' isn't a terrible movie, especially considering it's based on a video game which is usually poison with adaptions.

However, film making wise it's pretty bland and looks like a Netflix movie at times. The dialogue is patchy with some laughable line delivery. The visual effects are terrible and painfully noticeable during action scenes. The villains are just whatever - the only thing worth mentioning is their bad facial hair.

Honestly, Alicia Vikander is the saving grace, as I thought she was solid as Lara Croft, but shes too good for this movie.

The directing style started off interesting and it managed to create interest in the first half on the movie with amazingly shot scenes and very good music, creative dialog choices and good script mixed with proper acting skills. In the second half of the movie everything changed. Like the whole crew and cast was fired and replaced. The movie's plot started to drag and had pacing issues. The acting was overdone due to Hollywood effect, and the script was totally and down right trash, with the cheesy and meaningless one liners and the non existent character dialog. God awful CGI at times and no music or high quality sound effects for a movie at this budget and magnitude. Terrible fake scenery which wasn't even exploited to the limit when it would have been acceptable. The plot was shallow, and cliche. Given the fact that they had so much potential with the Tomb Raider title, they went for the complete and utter lazy plot with the generic villain, easily predictable plot twists and superficial meaningless character motivation and emotions. Overall it felt like the biggest failure of video game adaptation (but we all know that is not true). It's a bad movie, which wasn't supposed to be made! Expand

TheThis was a potentially great video game adaption but the pieces just didn't come together. I would say the biggest problem with the movie was the tone switching and the consistency of the movie not being as good as it could've been. The film starts out strong but fades as it falls into the generic action movie category. The lead actress playing Croft is the perfect fit for the role and I would like to see her come back with a better writer and director for the franchise. So, this is a usual, generic, action movie with nothing really special to make it stand out from other action movies that came out before it. But, this does show some potential for video game movies if they are handled by the right people. But, this film just wasn't able to break through and set itself apart from other films. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dear writers of TombRaider the movie.. YOU SUCK.

Oh and spoiler warning, the film was a mockery of the incredible work, thought and effort that went into the rebooted game franchise.

The game (as created by SquareEnix) was a story about an arrogant young girl trying to prove herself better than her father who’d committed suicide. Through numerous tribulations she was slowly broken, humbled and found the inner will to become what she was destined to be. Through sheer determination and grit, she began to discover the truth about her family and unlearned all that she took for granted in terms of faith and trust. With powerful dialogue and criticism of organised religion, Lara found in herself the resolve and strength to stop an ancient evil and set herself on the path to become the Tomb Raider.

The new Lara was the antithesis of the original video game. No tight shorts, pistols or pointy boobs, the new Lara was real - a relatable heroine who needed no man to get **** done. Just watch the behind the scenes videos. They knew Lara had become a sex symbol for horny boys and wanted to turn her into something that could inspire a new generation of gamers.

Sounds awesome, right? But let's talk about the movie. How did Hollywood handle all the depth of the new Lara? They turned it into a mockery of about a weak heroine with intense daddy issues who constantly needs to be rescued.

You trivialised her trials and pain, instead taking a visual symbol from each conquest and turning it into a bizarre, unrelated plot element. You destroyed the important scene where she was forced to kill for the first time and all the pain and mental anguish that was portrayed so perfectly by the voice actress was pissed away in two seconds of screen time before daddy dances onto the set like some kind of demented garden gnome.

You turned one of the best reboots into a sad shadow of a film where Lara can’t do anything without crying for her father. Oh, and to make it worse, you took all of the supernatural themes out and turned it into something mundane - stripping it of the fantasy and incredibly, the reality.

But hey, let’s just end it by showing the guns that tie this heap of steaming **** with the even ****tier movies starring Angelina and make all those fans happy, eh?

Alicia Vikander portrays a young Lara who is more vulnerable, similar to the 2013 game, except her spin on Lara is definitely distinctive. While my only complaint is that the beginning delves too much into the backstory of Lara before she undertakes her first adventure, to learn so much about this version of Lara allowed for a deeper connection to her character. It was filled with action, and some of the sequences were reminiscent of what happened in the 2013 game, which was done so well. I do hope that we get a sequel with this Lara, because I feel that there is so much potential. Expand

Expand

The characters are generally uninteresting and forgettable. This is most notably attributable to main protagonist, Lara, which acts as the typical generic, and bratty kid you can expect to find in most action films. Plot points are not emphasized nearly enough for the typical viewer to bat even a single eye. Though its concept did seem promising throughout the movie's first couple of minutes, the execution of the story was unfortunately very poor. Additionally, due to the overbearing amount of vices presented as opposed to virtues, the concluding resolution felt very fabricated when reached.

All in all, Tomb Raider has showcased an impressive blueprint and conceptualization for its plot, though the way said blue print was utilized came out as more or less underwhelming. This film is tough to enjoy, casually or through a critical eye. For a better experience, its best to simply play the video games it is based off of.

She's still difficult to relate to as her heritage doesn't just magically fade away despite the fact that the film finds her choosing to live below her means. It was a pretty hokey idea anyway if you ask me. Especially since it doesn't make sense for her to not use the Croft fortune as a means fund the adventure when you consider she was already in the process of accepting it before finding out about the island where her father was last known to be. Watching her get pummeled in the boxing ring was way more effective at humanizing her.

None of this would have mattered though if it weren't for Vikander as it's her that makes the character so intensely likable and not the change in lifestyle. She may not have the same sex appeal Jolie had back in 2001, but she manages to bring her own charm to the role and displays a remarkable physicality that lends itself well to the action sequences. All in all I'd say she's a fine heir to the Croft mantle and fits this new take on the source material by effectively matching Angelina's original performance without emulating it.

The movie follows in the same direction as the recent video games. This trial by fire origin story has a more grounded, desperate tone and gives some added brutality to the fights and stunts. Things are a lot of fun, but I do feel that the plot gets bogged down with too much exploration of Lara's daddy issues. This is really only a problem because the necessary emotion just isn't there. When they finally get to the actual tomb things play out like your standard Indiana Jones flick, only without the same level of urgency. Before that our time on the island is spent watching Lara try to survive her captors and the various dangers present in the environment itself. Those parts are much more interesting. The set-pieces are suitably entertaining ensuring that the movie is a solid bit of popcorn entertainment all the way through.

Something's not quite right with Tomb Raider's visuals. Everything looks kind of cheap, giving the whole thing much more of a B-movie feel than it otherwise would have had. Sometimes this works in it's favor as it reminds us that this is just meant to be a bit of dopey fun. Other times, not so much.

As far as the supporting cast goes, there's a real standout performance from Daniel Wu. While he wasn't portrayed as Lara's love interest, one might not have minded if he had of been. He's got a natural charisma and would make an excellent Wei Shen in a Sleeping Dogs adaptation should Square Enix ever choose to go that route. Walton Goggins as the film's villain is a surprising letdown. He's forced to give a really restrained performance and it doesn't suit him. Based on the works I've seen him in, he's at his best when allowed to cut loose and let the craziness fly. Dominic West is fine, but isn't really given much to do. That Nick Frost cameo is pretty nice.

The Tomb Raider film reboot adapts the game reboot, effectively letting both sides of the franchise take the classic heroine to some harsher places. Even with a compelling new lead in the role, the question still remains; does this actually make for a better movie than the one we got back in 2001? In my opinion, not really. It's hits a lot of the same notes. The final showdown between Vikander and Goggins mirrors that of Jolie and Ian Glen's in a lot of ways. Even a lot of the flaws are the same like a slow opening before getting to the real meat of the experience (a bike chase helps the pacing out in this one a bit). The new direction does allow the formula to feel at least somewhat fresh again though. Plus the action is solidly executed which helps the film stay afloat when things aren't delivering narrative-wise. Ultimately however, whether or not you'll find the character and concept worth revisiting is going to depend on your enjoyment of the original movie. I personally found it flawed yet passable then, and so I find it flawed yet passable now.

She seemed as she is just a well-trained girl who is fit and has some good fighting skills, but as the movie proceeds and Lara becomes at risk, we see that she is more like a superhero rather than a good fighter, and that didn't work for me at all. Also, she is implausibly smart and quick-witted, and that saves a lot of time that should have been spent on putting some puzzle pieces and discovering important things.

Surprisingly, Lara Croft wasn't likable at the beginning, but as the movie goes forward she became more and more interesting, and that, in large part, due to Alicia Vikander appealing performance, she really nailed it! Alicia Vikander proved that was the right cast choice for Lara Croft, whether from her appearance, or her acting abilities in the dramatic moments. Speaking of drama, I am so happy that this movie didn't try to be a tearjerker movie, specially at displaying Lara's past and her father. But, that doesn't mean that we got a good origin story of Lara, actually everything else about Lara's past and her story with her father was terrible! The origin story here is not just uninspired, but it's a total mess.

There are some plot holes in the movie. In addition, there are a lot of exposition, and a lot of explaining. And the dialogue in general isn't very good. The plot itself is somewhat muddled. Also, there is a stupid plot-twist. The action sequences are by no means special or inventive, but what makes up for it is the camera work in these action sequences that resembles the video games. All the camera movements and the camera angles are pretty much look like those of video games, and that was really cool! While I didn't the action isn't intense, I was very entertained by it. That being said, The movie still has a cinematic feel, and it looked very nice. Thankfully, this movie is not CGI-heavy, as I mentioned above that it didn't rely so much on fantasy, but when there are some scenes that require using special effects, the CGI looked a bit poor. The humor isn't so great, but Nick Frost has two cameos, and he was hilarious as usual.

The villain is clichéd and very weak. Of course, there is a sequel bait ending Despite all its major flaws, I enjoyed Tomb Raider!

Tomb Raider is the only movie that based on a video game that feels like a video game, for better or worse!

I think this film just goes to show the critics once again can get it wrong and like some other user reviews have said, this game to film adaptation is likely to be one of the best ones yet. It follows the Tomb Raider game released in 2013 but with many differences. I honestly felt Vikander held a striking resemblance to the new Lara and I really fell for her performance. I could feel in every action scene how the game would have played out, such as having to repeatedly tap a button on the controller just to get out of some intense or dramatic scenario. I felt the pacing of the story was reasonable, the acting in general was pretty good too.

Overall a pretty entertaining movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolute worst piece of SJW garbage I have ever seen. This movie is NOT a Tomb Raider movie. The original with Angelina Jolie opens with Lara Croft battling a robot trying to kill her. This movie opens with dozens of teenage boys trying to catch a fox tail off the back of Lara's bike while she tries to outrun them in some stupid game. THIS Lara Croft acts like a spoiled little brat. No maturity at all. Women are supposed to want to BE Lara Croft, but what woman wants to actually be like this. Even towards the end, where Lara is supposed to be finding herself, she still acts like a little girl. Certainly no tomb raider that's for sure. Also, you can barely understand the dialogue due to the over emphasis on everyone's accent apparently to try to make the movie more authentic. Avoid at all cost. We need to stop supporting movies like this that force a political agenda on the audience. Enough is Enough. Expand

The writing is bare-bones and the shot selections get ugly at times but Tomb Raider counterbalances those missteps with moments of emotion and adventure. Driven by Alicia Vikander, who pulls off both swagger and vulnerability, this journey takes time to build its climax and earns its moments. Meanwhile, the variety of action sequences and character interactions throughout contribute to a steady flow of engagement.

While this film does fall victim to going overboard with special effects, the steady pace of the journey should warrant viewer investment. Like many broad action movies lately, Tomb Raider tries too hard at times but, it also accomplishes the smaller moments that many of those same action movies are missing. Tomb Raider may not strike many as a favorite but it should be mildly enjoyable for most.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played all the TR games, and for me the intro and the general story of the new reboot game was vastly superior to that movie. First I don't think Alicia was the right choice. She don't seems at ease in an action movie, yet she undeniably have talents for acting. The story was just ok, and I think the element of the Trinity founded by the Croft should have been included from the start. The story would have been so much more richer that way. The action is good but the camera angles are just horrible 50% of the time. So most of them just feels distant. There is no beautiful landscape settings, and archaeology findings are almost in the background, no sens of discovery. At her first kill, Lara forgets to pick up a gun...in a survival story, that's a bad start. I didn't find the role of the father convincing. Not because of the actor, but his act revolves around 2-3 lines of thinking. I found the villain to be credible for once. The music was good on certain key points, but very generic otherwise. Some CGI weren't very well mixed together. I give it a 60%. I think the credibility of the characters and the action just wasn't there. In my view, that particular Lara would fit so much better in a TV series because of the survival and exploring aspects, who takes time to show and develop. Expand

But as soon as they get to the island, it flips on you and turns in to "generic bad action movie". The pacing gets all wonky, the plot turns to mush, character's motivations are uncertain and action sequences become ridiculous. It's too bad, I wanted to like it, as I like Tomb Raider in general. In the end to me it just felt like a rushed out origin story so they can reboot the franchise... again. Oh, and there's scenes where they clearly are making callbacks to moments in the games. Which felt odd. I like the games, but I expect more from the movies, not a re-enacted game. Member that one time in that one game?? Yeah, I member! I have watched my husband play the game and some of the scenes from the movie are similar to scenes from the game. Much of the movie is very badly acted, especially by Vikander and there is no real father daughter chemistry between her and her father, played by Dominic West. I have to say that I was sorely disappointed by the film. The only real bright spot were some of the scenes that involved some kind of action. The music was heavily implemented to carry some of the scenes or at least to give them more of a punch. I can and have been able to suspend any attachment to reality but for this film it was rather difficult as my mind would wander back to certain holes in the story-line. Over all I'd say it gets a 3 for atmosphere and somewhat decent production values because the story and the acting were terrible. Expand

Some events in this movie are so ludicrous that it completely redefines the expression "jumping the shark".

On top of that, the script feels like an intern's dissertation project for his Film Studies B.A.

Verdict: Get a Real Job

This should not have been a 2-hour film, It should have been an hour and 40 minutes at best. The introduction, which took about 40 minutes for her to get on the island and to really start the adventure, was just utter nonsense. There was no real story set up, Just a bunch of poorly written and acted scenes that did nothing to even get you remotely interested in the events to come. And it didn't help that the plot is so freaking generic, You can pretty much predict it from start to finish.

Another big issue for me would have to be the heavy reliance on CG. It's painfully obvious that pretty much every action scene is CG and that's such a huge disappointment to me. It doesn't just look painfully obvious but it looks fake and cheesy. I wish they had done a better job with it, Maybe make for a bit more realistic movie rather than a bunch of weak "action" scenes made from CG that stick out like sore thumbs.

Overall, This isn't even worthy of a rental because there isn't a single redeemable thing about this film. Sorry to put it so bluntly but they need to stop bringing back this franchise, It's never going to be good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was an incredible disappointment if you come in expecting Tomb Raider related to the series of games (or even previous movies). It made a so-so action movie with a bland taste and unoriginal story.

The acting was fine, there wasn’t a lot to show off the acting chops of anyone, but it wasn’t so horrible you cringe like you would on a straight to DVD movie. The story was bland, no real surprises and sadly no supernatural.

The lack of supernatural aspect was the most surprising part. It is the one thing that makes Tomb Raider the Tomb Raider you grew up with. Boss monsters, a bit of supernatural end of the world, etc was completely removed from the world. This was a straight forward action movie with no actual magic, or person locked in a tomb.

I really was disappointed they didn’t really stay with the video game reboot story. They kept a lot of chunks but left out most of the NPCs and all the cool portions of the story. The end result was a dry movie that was so bland and “meh” that I even now don’t remember everything.

The good: The acting was ok, but thats it – just ok.

The bad: The story was butchered and details of Lara Croft’s world so cut down that you wouldn’t recognize it as that world, even if some of the scenes were straight out of the video game.

It'sTomb Raider is a reboot of a franchise from the early 2000s that was based on a series of video games. This reboot also comes out not long after the video game series was rebooted, and it clearly is meant to emulate the newer games. It's directed by Roar Uthaug and stars Alicia Vikander, Dominic West, and Walton Goggins. Story: The story is loosely based on the story of the newer video games, but it's a lot less interesting as they had to water it down quite a bit to fit it into a two-hour movie. The gist of it is that Lara has not been able to accept that her father is dead, and therefore refuses to sign the papers certifying that he's dead. Eventually, though, she is convinced to sign them by her dad's friend and the lawyer who is walking her through the process gives her a puzzle, that she then solves and finds her dad's secret lair. Based on what she finds in his lair, a bunch of research about an island that was supposedly cursed, she decides to set out to the island and find out what happened to her father. Lots of action and craziness ensues. I don't think it'll surprise any of you when I say that the story of this movie is nothing spectacular. They definitely could have cut down on the early movie set up (there's a bike sequence that goes on entirely too long) and given us more of what we actually want: watching her have an adventure on the island. Also, beckoning back to my earlier statement that it was watered down, I'm serious when I said that. The story of this movie is similar to that of the newer video games, but it is very, very loosely connected. Even the way that it ends isn't the same as the video games. In the end, it felt like that I watched a summarized version of the story I wanted to see. I still enjoyed myself for most of the movie, but it definitely had a lot more potential.

Script: Yeah, this is by far the weakest part of the movie. The dialogue is extremely weak, and because of that there are some cringe-worthy moments. Luckily, this movie doesn't rely on dialogue too much. Acting: All of the actors involved with this movie give solid performances, but when the script they have to work with isn't super awesome, they don't shine as bright as they could. Cinematography: For the most part, the cinematography was pretty unmemorable. There are no shots that are particularly impressive or outside of the norm for this kind of movie. I will say that there are a couple of action sequences where there is entirely too much cutting, though. Overall: Tomb Raider is an alright popcorn flick to watch and enjoy yourself. Just don't expect strong dialogue and don't expect too much out of the story.

The movie's plot follows loosely that of the 2013 game, but it offers some surprises, both good and bad. The story is a slight disappointment, but the action is great and in line with the 2013 game. I disliked the videogamey puzzles in the end because they don't make any sense at all in a movie format.

Tomb Raider 2018 is a bit of a let down, as this movie could have been so much better. Still, I'd like to see a proper sequel done right.

Alicia Vikander is the most capable actress to play Lara Croft as of yet. She gives it her all, but her performance is the only one that is not cringe-inducing and it does not help to elevate the script that's unintentionally comedic at parts. The action is fun, as is to be expected from the genre, but the story just leaves too much room for blatantly idiotic decision-making that, if avoided, would have cleaned up inconsistency but also would have severely truncated the film's length. That being said, there is quite a plot twist that is sure to satidfy most viewers. This is a movie for fans of the franchise. Tomb raider fans will be well-served by the story, but newcomers will find little enjoyable in this reboot.
