While I'm glad some people enjoyed it, I cannot recommend it. Give it a try, you might like it, but probably won't.

McCarthy and Spencer have no chemistry. That may be in large part do to Octavia absolutely phoning in this performance. She's a FAR better actor than she is in this. 1/3 in and still no fights or laughs, which as an "action comedy" you'd kind of expect. McCarthy does her best, but her FAT-LADY-FALL-DOWN running gag stopped being funny a long time ago. The film also has a serious issue with logic too. The "miscreants" that get powers activated are also violent psychopaths... okay, but that doesn't really explain why they're a problem? Like, they have powers sure, but it's not like they're bulletproof. Why can't the police just, you know, shoot them. The movie is full of logical inconsistencies like this.

The costume design is also, let's be real, is just terrible.

A lot of people in these reviews are very much coming from dishonest people who straight up do not want movies staring plus size women and women of colour. The reality is though... it's just bad. It's just really, REALLY bad.… Expand

I cannot find any amusement on an obese person trying to make us laugh (let alone two of them).
Melissa needs help to regain a healthy body, so does the other chick that plays the scientist. The visuals are nice and the dialogue is acceptableI cannot find any amusement on an obese person trying to make us laugh (let alone two of them).
Melissa needs help to regain a healthy body, so does the other chick that plays the scientist. The visuals are nice and the dialogue is acceptable for a family movie on Netflix. But It is not funny to laugh at obese people, in the same way it is not funny to laugh at blind or disabled people.

Complete waste of time. No logic in these characters having multi-million dollar genetic treatments to give a couple overweight 50 year old women superpowers. Thunder force has no thunder for a comedy about improbable heroes. The story just copy older McCarthy movies but with unfunny humour. The jokes are childish, sometimes of bad taste. The best part of the movie is when they're kids right at the start. It goes downhill after that. The acting is unbelievable bad. Even Octavia Spencer doesn't believe in this movie, and she's in it. This isn't the next great Marvel movie (thank god) it's me needing a quick laugh on a Tuesday and this delivers the way streaming services have for this whole pandemic. It was fun, under 2 hours, a good laugh, and what I needed. Nuf said. Simple.… Expand

Ben Falcone cannot write or direct a film. Melissa McCarthy has proven she is capable of being a good actress and funny, and needs to stand up to her husband. This was rough.

He’s helmed most of the recent films starring his wife Melissa McCarthy and they’ve all been mediocre. This one co-stars Octavia Spencer, who plays McCarthy’s best friend since elementary school. They end up with super powers. In addition to McCarthy playing her usual bumbling loser, there’s lots of potential for physical humor. Sadly, neither of these opportunities is especially realized. There are some mildly amusing moments for McCarthy, but no situations or lines are especially funny. Spencer just plays the straight woman without any potential for comedy. The action revolves around encounters with villains, but it’s mostly just bodies flying thru the air. McCarthy needs to break out of her husband’s mediocre abilities if she ever wants her movies to get better.… Expand

Or, have they been locked away in their high rise condos because of the pandemic, and have become jaded and complacent?

Melissa McCarthy gives us a fun romp in Thunder Force, a chuckle at the serious 6-part mega-epics that never end! She really is a fair writer, a good actress, and a fine entertainer! Enjoy the movie!
