Not a garbage movie by any means but it's not that original and the writing isn't the best. I wish Gorr the God Butcher was more fleshed out. This movie also doesn't take itself seriously leading to a lack of stake and loss of audience investment.

Absurd doesn't have to be awfully stupid. This is the typical 2020's stupid movie written and directed by untalented woke people, that are on a mission to destroy everything that was created before them to feel better about themselves.

I thought Thor: Ragnarok was crap and I thought this sequel was going to be worse but in the end it ended up being pretty decent.
I don't understand why people label her as the worst of Thor.

All they have to doI don't know what it is, modern feminists or woke equity politics, but how do you do such a bad job with something so easy. The source material has already established a massive fan base, and the story is already written. All they have to do is transcribe it from book to screen, and you'd have the best show of the decade. It's so simple. You have to be a extremely bad writer/director/producer to make something so great so bad. It's also extremely unethical to take someone's life's work and change the source material with such disrespect. Then, just to make everything so much worse, you add on top of that fan baiting. Fan Baiting is done on purpose to not only stir up controversy for publicity but also serves as a barrier to real criticism and ensures that the show will succeed because if anyone has a different opinion, they will just be labeled as a "racist/sexist/transphobe/etc." and their opinion is ignored. It's a method to make everyone think you're virtuous when really you're just a horrible person spreading hate with anyone who has a different opinion than your own. You act like you're fighting fascism by spreading and using fascism. It's hypocrisy in action. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

It is clearly aimed at children with constant jokes throughout the movie. Length is surprisingly long with very few action scenes and the few action scenes there are pale in comparison to the ones from the previous Thor movies. The villain is an interesting idea that was executed very poorly in this movie. For a so-called god killer you really don't see him killing any gods except for one but it was very comical and very child-like like something you'd expect from a kindergarten school play. I feel they wasted so much time on someone's illness that could have been better spent by showing us the villain actually killing some gods. 5/10 a decent watch with your kids, not really worth watching otherwise even if you're a fan of Thor. The next target? New Asgard... Ever since the events of Endgame the MCU has felt rather directionless, and to be honest this movie doesn’t really do anything to change that. There are a handful of funny moments, but the biggest issue with this movie is that it leans into the absurd humour far too often, frequently to the detriment of the characters and plot. It’s not as dull as some of the other entries into the MCU, but it’s not one I’ll bother watching again. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Thor has gotten to silly and goofy. He comes off as just an idiot half the time. Surprise he has now lost someone else he cares for…Jane. The one person and love interest that was still out there and he could possibly end up with. Now Thor has the power to give someone else the power of Thor like he does with the kids at the end??? Tony is probably cussing in his grave bc they could’ve all used that in endgame. This was very disappointing though overall especially since losing Ironman and Cap Thor could be the one to push the avengers forward and help fill that hole. I doubt anyone reads my reviews but I enjoy writing out my feelings. I’ve been away from metacritic awhile. If you do read it thank you it’s just my opinion. The first Thor movie was an okay introduction and the second one was quite bland. In came Taika Waititi with Thor Ragnarok (2017), who made Thor a charismatic and fun character. Thor Ragnarok was no doubt one of the funniest and most enjoyable movies in the Thor franchise so far. It was no wonder that I was looking forward to Thor Love and Thunder when it was revealed Taika was returning as director. So did Thor: Love and Thunder deliver more fun or was this a big thundering step backwards?

Firstly, Christian Bale was phenomenal as Gorr, the antagonist, in this film. He delivered an amazingly unsettling performance that made him incredibly creepy. He also delivers on the sorrowful moments as well that make him very sympathetic. Amazingly, he can be both frightening and yet kind of root for him. Natalie Portman finally returns to the Thor franchise as Jane Foster after being absent in Ragnarok. Her return is very "mighty" as she isn't just a doctor that is around but now a hero in her own right. It was great seeing her return and it's great to see that the chemistry between her and Thor (Chris) is still there. She has her struggles to deal with it and Natalie does an outstanding job of conveying the pain that she is going through. Chris and Tessa return as Thor and Valkyrie respectively and they are still great. Taika is still fun as the rock person Korg. Russell Crowe is pretty enjoyable to watch as Zeus as well. The whole cast did a great job in their performance.

I also like the themes that are explored in the film. The exploration of love is a running arc for Thor throughout and I liked seeing him try to find "himself". There is also the theme of death in both Gorr and Jane's arc. It is handled wonderfully in both and I liked the resolution to it all as well. Legendary composer, Michael Giacchino, gives a colourful and bombastic score that works well for the movie. He also incorporates some great use of songs, similar to Guardians of the Galaxy, such as "Sweet Child o' Mine" by Guns N' Roses that just mesh well in the film. There are some pretty enjoyable action sequences but the most memorable is in the second act. There is a fight scene in the shadow realm that is just visually oozing with style.

Unfortunately, the comedy in this movie does not work. I just found the comedy in this movie to not be that funny. Ragnarok had some laugh-out-loud moments but Love and Thunder just never get those types of moments. Additionally, a lot of the humour comes from Thor being an idiot. In Ragnarok, he was a lot more comedic but he had an arc and an important decision near the end. Here he is just a comedic idiot throughout and he never gets that sort of big decision as he did in Ragnarok. He does have an arc but it's very weak. It's genuinely a shame that the titular character has been reduced to a joke in his film. On that note, the comedy isn't as prevalent as it was in Ragnarok. Ragnarok was a comedy throughout with some strong serious moments sprinkled in. Love and Thunder mesh half a comedy and half serious and this tonal clash hurt the movie. The serious moments are when the movie is at its best but then a dumb gag happens and damages the moment.

Christian Bale is the standout in this film but his character Gorr is barely even in the film. There is a whole middle act where he just isn't even there. He is also called the God butcherer but we don't even see him on screen actually butchering a god which is such a shame. Gorr needed more screen time to flesh out his character and show why he is a threat to the gods. They also don't show why Gorr killing gods is bad. There is one scene implying negative consequences but we don't see it either. This creates a problem where it feels like there isn't much at stake in the film even though there is supposed to be. The film just doesn't have much weight to it. In Ragnarok, Odin's death was meaningful, the brother's conversation was meaningful, Valkyrie's decision to help was meaningful, Thor embracing the God of Thunder was meaningful, and Thor letting Asgard blow up was meaningful. Love and Thunder just lacks a lot of these apart from one thing at the end that isn't even Thor. Overall, Love and Thunder is pretty disappointing. I expected something that was like Ragnarok but instead got something that felt like an attempt at Ragnarok. The comedy wasn't as funny this time and there are a lot more serious moments this time that is great but makes the comedy feel more jarring as it interrupts the moment. However, it is not downright terrible as there is enjoyment to be had here. It's just not a great Thor movie and definitely not as good as its predecessor. It's just okay and after over 20 MCU movies, okay just isn't good enough.

My wife and I are big MCU fans. We've seen every one of the films, in theaters, together and have had varying opinions on a few of them. For the most part, however, we've enjoyed everything Marvel Studios has produced. That is until Love and Thunder stormed into cinemas. It is the first MCU film that we watched and felt had close to no redeeming qualities, generating an acute urge to leave the theater. We didn't, however, and here are my thoughts. Any notion of a compelling plot point was horrendously undercut by the film's inconsistent tone. The machine gun approach to humor shot so many holes into the narrative that it caused any semblance of weight or severity to come draining out in rivulets.

Gorr, for example, had the makings of such an intriguing villain but he had a stark lack of screen time in which to earn the title "God Butcher" and his potential was washed away in a deluge of joke after joke after tired joke. Don't get it twisted though. Christian Bale's performance was fantastic. Whenever his underutilized villain was allotted a segment on-screen, I could feel the anguish and hatred as the emotions traced furrows across his pained brow, his dialogue dripping with palpability. But with every goat screech, slapstick bit or suggestion of a love triangle between Thor, his former hammer Mjolnir and his most recent weapon Stormbreaker, I felt as if Gorr was out of place, tonally speaking. Even established characters such as Jane and Valkyrie felt unrecognizable from themselves with their usual personalities swapped out for generic, goofy lines. Our titular character simply became a parody of himself as the script overcapitalized on his ponderous penchant for oafishness. The only character that truly felt at home in the morass of endless quips and levity was Korg considering he’s never been presented as a particularly solemn entity.

And speaking of, Korg's overused, ham-fisted exposition washed over any hopes of subtly or subtext and many subplots were either totally ignored or relegated to a brief mention with no payoff. The power struggle for leadership of the Guardians of the Galaxy between Starlord and Thor (hinted at in the closing act of Endgame) was reduced to a gag. Valkyrie made a mere utterance on the weariness she felt for the responsibilities of being king which gets glossed over before moving on to the next joke. Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, Thor’s legendary goats, were distilled into a one-note running gag based on a more than decade old meme. Jane's quest for Mjolnir consisted of an absurdly brief overview of Asgard becoming a tourist attraction (more missed potential). Sif’s short reunion with Thor was hijacked by the notion that she, one of the greatest warriors Asgard has ever seen, doesn’t understand the requirements to get into Valhalla for the sake of a jape. Then, a character’s passing on to Valhalla as one of the few emotional beats in the film swiftly had the rug pulled out from beneath it when said character was greeted by a cheerful former ally, thought lost, boasting a "Hey, you're dead too" line. The list goes on. The thing that sucks regarding the humor, other than it drowning out the plot and overstaying its welcome, is that even the jokes I would normally find humorous fell flat because I had already been beaten into a sense of numbness by the incessant torrent of jokes that didn't land.

I could go on for several paragraphs more about what I felt was wrong with the film but it isn't necessary and would just devolve into a pity party of complaints (hasn't it already?). I will just end it by saying: Either Waititi needs a shorter leash or Marvel needs to hand the next Thor film to someone that will do the franchise and characters justice.

But the relationship between Thor and Jane feels a bit forced still, however. I don't really believe there's love here, but it's very much on par with Thor 1 and Thor 2 and I give it a pass, because I enjoyed seeing her again. A couple of jokes felt flat, and that's a shame. The movie sometimes feels like it's trying too hard, sometimes even not being serious enough during important scenes. But all in all, I liked this.

They do ditch the guardians rather quickly. Based on the trailer, I had imagined they would play a bigger part. But in the end, this might be for the best. The butcher has a great design, and Christian Bale is great in this. But perhaps the god butcher does not really do a whole lot of god butchering after all. Perhaps a lot of wasted potential right there.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gute Unterhaltung.

Ansonsten Top! Gute Unterhaltung :)

--

Good entertainment. It bothers me that you don't actually kill Zeus and just steal his 'tools' just like that, but the whole popcorn drama seems infinitely approachable and wonderfully warm-hearted. Another kudos to Kevin Feige for creating yet another fine digital flick from the Marvel Comics.

A bit more tech: The German streaming soundtrack may work well on a tablet, cell phone or mid-range soundbar, but it seems a bit too 'compressed' for a noble high-end home cinema (Arcam - Dynaudio) (Note: Here is another test, when the standard UHD is released). You need a lot of power amplifiers to let it 'rip' halfway here. Furthermore, the picture format of 21:9 is extremely outdated and requires up-to-date scanning (16:9 or better IMAX). Finally, I feel that this Marvel film doesn't mesh very well with the rest of the films. Otherwise great! Good entertainment :) (Google Translate form german)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. E-Value: 7

The adventures of Thor Odinson continues with the twenty-ninth instalment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In addition to characters returning from 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, Jane Foster who previously appeared in 2011’s Thor and 2013’s Thor: The Dark World and absent in the previous movie, made a return in this movie with the power of Thor.

After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Thor (Hemsworth) and the Guardians of the Galaxy received a distress signal from Sif, who fought against Gorr the God Butcher (Bale). Going their separate ways, Thor finds her where he learns that Gorr has the Necrosword which has the power to slay a God like Thor himself and his goal is to kill all Gods.

Meanwhile, Jane Foster (Portman) have been diagnose with a terminal cancer and do not much time left to live. Hoping to find a cure, she travel to New Asgard where she finds the broken Mjolnir. Later that night, Gorr and his Shadow Monster attacks New Asgard and Thor arrives in time to battle him. During the battle, Jane, who now has the power of Thor and wielding the Mjolnir, joins the battle with Thor but Gorr successfully kidnap the children of New Asgard and escape.

Thor along with Jane, Valkyrie and Korg travel to Omnipotence City to seek help from Zeus and the other Gods to help create an army to fight against Gorr before he kills more Gods and end their entire existence.

If I were to compare this movie with Thor: Ragnarok, this movie is kind of a letdown but still not too bad. For one, the pacing is not really good and I felt the movie is rushed which kind of explain why the movie is on nearly two hours. Although the plot is fine but I felt it could use some improvement. The humours in this movie is also a letdown. There are not many funny scenes in this movie like in the previous movie which is kind of disappointed.

Due to shorter runtime, some of the characters did not have enough time for character developments. For example, Gorr is supposed to be a threatening main villain in the movie where he kills Gods but the movie only shown very little of it. There are not much of screentime for him either. Jaime Alexander who reprised her role as Sif, return in this movie but she is totally underused in this movie and have very little screentime.

Despite the bad parts of the movie, the casts did a splendid performance especially Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Christian Bale. Natalie’s performance in this movie is a huge improvement and better than her performance in the first two Thor movies. It is really great to see her character again and Natalie still got it. For Christian Bale, he played a really great villain which reminds me of his role as Patrick Bateman in 2000’s American Psycho. Chris Hemsworth still plays Thor well without any sign of degrading.

This may not be the best Thor movie but at least, it is not like Thor: The Dark World. The movie is not too bad but not too good either. It is still an enjoyable and good entry into this movie franchise. Do stay back for mid-credits and post-credits scene. There is one underrated character from the comics shows up which I do not expect at all.

This actually made me tired of all the 80s throwbacks that are force fed into your faces. Felt like a kids movie, and if that was the case, then it is fine, but I think even kids will think this is too corny of a rendition. This wasn't even funny as a parody. Christian Bale as Gorr was a too generic of a villain, seen it before in dozens of movies and was a dime in a dozen. Marvel has become a money hogging scam and trying to milk this franchise as much as possible with nonsensical storylines. We should rate this honestly lower as to give a signal the audience is not dumb, we know what quality is and script writers needs to be more creative. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Each new film Marvel rely solely on the actors performances when the script is awful. This unsecure Thor weights too heavy on Chris Hemsworth to the point you can't take him seriously when he acts or says something with wisdom. Killing Zeus (to later on you know he is alive) in that weak scene really throws the script out of the window. Thor equals Gorr by killing a god after not getting their help. Taika even goes in a gag of "killing" Korg to "justify" Thor's rage in mortaly wound Zeus. Jane Foster is not bad but the whole cancer drama its damaged by the script and the occasional "Im not lady" BS or Valkirie is a "king" stuff. I'm not even gonna mention the whole kids kidnapping and getting powers later on, that sh.. talks for itself. Despite the good Ragnarok film by Taika W. this one is of the worst Thor's film. Expand

Oh. My. F#%$%ing. Thunder God...

After reading the initial reviews, where some had painted it better than Ragnarok (which I loved), I was expecting to be thoroughly entertained: I love Chris Hemsworth's portrayal of the character; Same director as Ragnarok; Familiar, likable returning characters; What could go wrong? Honestly? Everything. It was smarmy. Totally and undefendably overconfident. Characters were not funny OR likable. By the time I was 30 minutes in, I couldn't take any more. I gave up. You couldn't pay me a year's salary to finish watching it. The banter between Thor and Star-Lord –normally nothing short of sheer comic joy – was cringeworthy. I found absolutely no redeeming qualities in this trash. Maybe it gets better. It couldn't get any worse!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Thor series of movies was never my favorite, but I felt like it held its own, until now. Gorr was no butcher, but the writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson certainly is. It seems co-writer and director Taika Waititi was unable to damage control her awful writing sufficiently.

It takes a special kind of inept to manage to make an encounter with a cosmic entity feel completely unremarkable. Gorr felt like he had no weight. Zeus was a joke. A pair of celestials just hanging out? The only silver lining I can glean from this is the hope that this was a career destroying blunder so that we may be spared further butchery.

Jane suddenly has Thor's powers and they fight bad guys like a power couple in a rom-com...BARF! But she has cancer, but the hammer is keeping her alive until she dies in his arms (rom-com) BARF! The Zeus scene looked like it shoe-horned in as a filler. All they could do was make crude jokes and show Thor's butt. They apparently ran out of ideas at that point. Then they faced the villain...OH No...a TRAP! Seriously, who DIDN'T see that coming? Good guys fight bad guys. Girl dies in arms of good guy.

The movie looks like it belongs on the Hallmark channel. It isn't worth the $10 and $50 worth of snacks you pay for a good movie.

I didn't like it. The story, the character dev, none of it. No idea why everyone thought Thor being weird creepy and flirty with his old Hammer and current weapon was a good idea, **** was painful everytime.

I loved the Jane Foster Thor,

I loved the Jane Foster Thor, only reason I didn't give it a zero. Wish they just dropped all the dumb side **** and showed Gorr actually tearing through Gods and Jane Foster becoming this full fledged God of Thunder.

Eh, I liked it all right, but it kinda didn't know what it wanted to be.
Also, Thor's girlfriend died just when she was becoming an interesting character. Why?

Not even Chris can save this from the absolutely amateurish writing, constant bad "jokes" that the lame direction forced into this. Every minute there has to be a lame unfunny "joke".. I've seen Strange and the multiverse not long ago, I thought that was bad, but this sets a new low.. Taika Waititi should never in the future should be allowed near movies in any capacity, because he creates incredibly bad movies. Expand
