At the same time I feel its certainly not the worst of the Thor movies sorry Dark World. Was interesting that Marvel didn't take the easy way out I was expecting them to with Jane near the end. Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman were great in this. Where the movie falls down is it gets very cartoonish with its humor there were some parts that made laugh admittedly but unfortunately a lot more parts that made me cringe and took me out of the story. Christian Bale did what he could with Gore but his arc felt a bit rushed and not fleshed out. Zeus felt like more of a punchline rather than a powerful god it was like the parts that should have been serious in the movie couldn't be as the movie was sort of stuck in cartoon mode. Overall there is certainly enough to enjoy in this movie but it struggles to balance humor with serious parts was great to see the guardians though. Expand

The movie is criminally unserious it’s a **** joke. Gorr knocks it out the park from the jump but as soon as the Marvel Studios logo rolls it’s all downhill from there, tonally. Thor and co. are written like an actual Muppets skit, complete with fighting literal Muppets within the first 10 minutes. Star-Lord gives this unusually out of character and frankly garbage pep talk to Thor that doesn’t really pay off at all when Thor recants it to Jane later in the movie.

For the great execution Christian Bale gives Gorr, he does ZERO God-Butchering in this film outside of the 5 minute prologue. They literally find out about this guy from a space Fox 5 broadcast labeling him Gorr The God Butcher while cutting through slides of dead god bodies.

Janes’ handling is great overall I think, but Marvel clearly cannot keep things interesting inflicting trauma on woman characters. Post-credit stuff was great though so I’m cautiously optimistic.

Overall this movie felt entirely disrespectful to Thor fans, like a parody Monty Python-ification of the typical slate of MCU one-liners and gags. Decent action sets and rare moments held intensely together by Christian Bale alone don’t save what is otherwise the weakest entry of Phase 4 without a doubt and possibly my least favorite MCU movie of all time.

With the exception of Loki, it doesn't seem like it's going to be very clear where this story is headed and Thor: Love and Thunder won't be the one to explain it to you.

This is a story that stands on its own, but that has caused it to fall short in that regard and also fall short for the long run because it doesn't seem that it has any kind of usefulness in the grand scheme of things.

I've never had a problem with the humor in the MCU, I'm not a sourpuss, but Taika Waititi turned this film into nothing more than a succession of gags that make of Thor a joke and all the other characters, have to follow his stupidity.

Natalie Portman shines in her best moments, but her story arc is only a step for the climax and closure of Thor's storyline.
Tessa Thompson is only there because the story cast her as the King of Asgard while once again Marvel wastes an excellent actor like Christian Bale on a villain who in the comics was epic, but in the film gets severely overlooked.

Thor: Love and Thunder is colorful piece of work that functions more as a comedy than a superhero film and gets lost in the grandiloquence of its own conceit, while offering nothing for the character or the rest of the MCU.
It's one of the weakest entries of the franchise and a major disappointment for the character.

At the end of the credits we find the usual caption: ''Thor will return''. If so, what Marvel desperately needs to do is take him off Waititi's hands

Love and Thunder is the result of trying to be funny no matter the costs - be it character development or even the plot. It has a few laughs, but nothing that would justify the lengths it takes to get there.

In total honesty, gone are the days where I'd become excited and overjoyed for the newest MCU film. In my eyes, the MCU's golden age ended with 'Avengers: Endgame' and it just hasn't been the same since. For the most part, we've been plagued with films that simply feel like obvious afterthoughts or expertly-written epilogue fanfiction at best, and this one is no exception. Riddled with an absurd amount of corny moments including but not limited to flying/screeching Taylor Swift goats, Thor riding his Stormbreaker axe like a witch on a broomstick, Thor caught in a jealousy love triangle with his old hammer MjoInir and his Stormbreaker axe and talking to them quite often throughout the film, random accents galore (Valkyrie now suddenly has a British accent and Russell Crowe's Zeus's accent is beyond silly, all over the place, and impossible to pinpoint), etc. The list goes on and on. Not even the performances can really save this one, as Hemsworth remains charming yet goofy to a fault in this one, and Bale's Gorr simply loooked and felt like a Voldemort ripoff. For me, the film's biggest standout star was Portman's Mighty Thor. Watching her carry the hammer and kicking ass was incredibly fun and satisfying to watch. The Guardians of the Galaxy also make a brief appearance at the beginning of the film that felt fun but mostly rushed and wasted unfortunately. Like I said before, the story and writing simply feels like fanfiction material at this point in the MCU and the stakes and emotions never feel as high anymore. So overall, while it's big, bright, and does have its fair share of enjoyable action sequences and a solid action performance from Portman in particular, this 'Thor' still feels like too much of a burnout like the rest of Phase 4 of the MCU has felt so far for the most part and is simply just a jumbled and corny mess. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Spoilers: If you haven't seen a marvel movie about a character who is corrupted by an ambiguously ancient evil that uses them for their own goals of destroying the universe in the last month, this movie might be worth a watch. Bringing back Natalie Portman just to have her be a former/current love interest and die so Thor learns a lesson feels like a misplay. Gorr as a character is utterly wasted and putting his quest tied to a universal threat takes away from what could have been an interesting revenge story that was teased by Thor and Eteri's interaction in Infinity War. Some of the 80s metal homages are cool but it's not enough to save the movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Thor has gotten to silly and goofy. He comes off as just an idiot half the time. Surprise he has now lost someone else he cares for…Jane. The one person and love interest that was still out there and he could possibly end up with. Now Thor has the power to give someone else the power of Thor like he does with the kids at the end??? Tony is probably cussing in his grave bc they could’ve all used that in endgame. This was very disappointing though overall especially since losing Ironman and Cap Thor could be the one to push the avengers forward and help fill that hole. I doubt anyone reads my reviews but I enjoy writing out my feelings. I’ve been away from metacritic awhile. If you do read it thank you it’s just my opinion. (Side note: Janes female Thor with mjlnoir is better than I predicted) Expand

The movie was fun but disappointing. It tries to be a comedy but fails miserably. Some jokes are funny but most of them are forced, reused and some just made me cringe.

The story writing is just badly executed. Gorr could easily have a whole phase dedicated to him. I dont know who thought mixing Gorr's storyline (one of marvel's darkest storylines) with a comedy would be a great idea. It does not fit at all. The movie made Gorr look like a complete joke. We dont even see him slaying a god in the entire movie... They barely scratch the surface of his potential. You immediately forget about him when you leave the theatre.

Just when I thought the movie would get serious, they shove more forced comedy down your throat. I thought Zeus would be epic. Oh boy was I disappointed. They also made him look like a total joke. The space orgy joke was just cringe. The character had no charisma and was boring. The version of Zeus in DCU had barely any screentime but still looked 100x more epic than the Zeus we got in this movie.

By the way, Chris and Natalie have 0 chemistry together. Not a great recipe for success in a ''love'' movie. Im still looking for the love parts in the movie. Most of Thor and Jane's interactions feel forced and empty because they lack any chemistry.

Overall, the movie was fun but disappointing and annoying. The worst of all 4.

My wife and I are big MCU fans. We've seen every one of the films, in theaters, together and have had varying opinions on a few of them. For the most part, however, we've enjoyed everything Marvel Studios has produced. That is until Love and Thunder stormed into cinemas. It is the first MCU film that we watched and felt had close to no redeeming qualities, generating an acute urge to leave the theater. We didn't, however, and here are my thoughts. Any notion of a compelling plot point was horrendously undercut by the film's inconsistent tone. The machine gun approach to humor shot so many holes into the narrative that it caused any semblance of weight or severity to come draining out in rivulets.

Gorr, for example, had the makings of such an intriguing villain but he had a stark lack of screen time in which to earn the title "God Butcher" and his potential was washed away in a deluge of joke after joke after tired joke. Don't get it twisted though. Christian Bale's performance was fantastic. Whenever his underutilized villain was allotted a segment on-screen, I could feel the anguish and hatred as the emotions traced furrows across his pained brow, his dialogue dripping with palpability. But with every goat screech, slapstick bit or suggestion of a love triangle between Thor, his former hammer Mjolnir and his most recent weapon Stormbreaker, I felt as if Gorr was out of place, tonally speaking. Even established characters such as Jane and Valkyrie felt unrecognizable from themselves with their usual personalities swapped out for generic, goofy lines. Our titular character simply became a parody of himself as the script overcapitalized on his ponderous penchant for oafishness. The only character that truly felt at home in the morass of endless quips and levity was Korg considering he’s never been presented as a particularly solemn entity.

And speaking of, Korg's overused, ham-fisted exposition washed over any hopes of subtly or subtext and many subplots were either totally ignored or relegated to a brief mention with no payoff. The power struggle for leadership of the Guardians of the Galaxy between Starlord and Thor (hinted at in the closing act of Endgame) was reduced to a gag. Valkyrie made a mere utterance on the weariness she felt for the responsibilities of being king which gets glossed over before moving on to the next joke. Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, Thor’s legendary goats, were distilled into a one-note running gag based on a more than decade old meme. Jane's quest for Mjolnir consisted of an absurdly brief overview of Asgard becoming a tourist attraction (more missed potential). Sif’s short reunion with Thor was hijacked by the notion that she, one of the greatest warriors Asgard has ever seen, doesn’t understand the requirements to get into Valhalla for the sake of a jape. Then, a character’s passing on to Valhalla as one of the few emotional beats in the film swiftly had the rug pulled out from beneath it when said character was greeted by a cheerful former ally, thought lost, boasting a "Hey, you're dead too" line. The list goes on. The thing that sucks regarding the humor, other than it drowning out the plot and overstaying its welcome, is that even the jokes I would normally find humorous fell flat because I had already been beaten into a sense of numbness by the incessant torrent of jokes that didn't land.

I could go on for several paragraphs more about what I felt was wrong with the film but it isn't necessary and would just devolve into a pity party of complaints (hasn't it already?). I will just end it by saying: Either Waititi needs a shorter leash or Marvel needs to hand the next Thor film to someone that will do the franchise and characters justice.

If some of you are starting to feel a little jaded with the endless stream of Marvel movies, you are not alone.

After the events that took place in Avengers: Endgame, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) now embarks on a journey to find inner peace. This lasts all of about five minutes before Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) shows up, with the sole purpose of destroying all the gods. In order to fight the threat to their existence, Thor seeks help from Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and Dr Jane Foster (Natalie Portman).

Thor: Love and Thunder is clearly dividing fans but for me, Thor 4 just didn't feel as good or as funny as it should have been. I very nearly gave up on the Thor franchise after The Dark World but the positive reviews for Thor: Ragnarok eventually persuaded me to give it another chance and well I wasn't the only one who was surprised at how funny and entertaining Ragnarok was. That right there is where the bar was set and to dip beneath it could not be allowed to happen. With Taika Waititi remaining as the director, the last thing I expected was for Love and Thunder to go hurtling towards Thor 2 levels of bad. This is tonally all over the place and normally I'd expect Waititi to get the blend between serious topics and humour right but in this case it's a mess. The jokes were constantly being thrown at you with only a handful of them getting any laughs at all. Not only that but they also repeated the same unfunny jokes over and over again, even if you did laugh the first time by the third and fourth it all gets a bit tedious. Overall the cinema was not laughing, and I understand every experience is not like this but when the majority of the jokes are met with cricket noises you have a problem.

So what else has Thor 4 got going for it? Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie is great but she's underused, Natalie Portman gave a better performance in this compared to Thor 1 & 2 combined. The CGI is messy, the script is messy and can someone please tell me what the hell accent Russell Crowe was trying to do? What accent was that supposed to be? Watch out Jared Leto, it seems Crowe is trying to outdo you for worst accent in a motion picture. Give him the award already, he deserves it for that horrendous portrayal of Zeus.

The only redeeming quality I can pull from this mess is Bale's terrifying performance as Gorr the God Butcher. A scene stealer every moment he's on screen and the only character with any real depth. He should have been used more because he is without a doubt the best thing about Thor: Love and Thunder. Hemsworth is just cashing it in at this point and after four solo Thor movies and eight total appearances as Thor I can't blame him for getting a little bored with the character. God knows I am. He definitely looks even bigger and better than ever before and as a casting choice for Thor he's perfect but looks aren't everything. As for Taika Waititi, dude you're better than this so if you've also lost interest in these movies then enough already, call it a day and move on to something else. The audience doesn't need to be subjected to cheap jokes and screaming goats.

Hemsworth said Thor: Love and Thunder is "the kind of film a seven-year-old would make" and that's certainly true. It's all over the place and did not manage to pull itself together and it's not like I had high expectations. To all the people saying Love and Thunder is better than Ragnarok, I'm glad you thought so but I respectfully disagree. If Marvel's Phase 4 is more of this then I'm going to start skipping new releases. It's better to have quality over quantity and more effort and imagination is needed. Superhero films don't need to be an endless stream of cash grabs. Yet like every other superhero fan I still went to see the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I stayed for the obligatory post credit scenes. I have also contributed to the 300+ million Thor: Love and Thunder has made on it's opening weekend, which also means I'm partly the reason we probably haven't seen the last of Thor. You can either skip this or make up your own mind, if you are going to see it, I suggest you lower your expectations. Recommended for the Thor fans or for anyone who wants to stare at Chris Hemsworth for two hours.

Hemsworth, Bale, and Thompson all kill it with their performances, although Natalie Portman's is a mixed bag overall, succeeding far more as Jane Foster than Mighty Thor. Additionally, the new worlds explored and the color palette used in the film are bright and fun to look at, while the soundtrack rocks like it did in Ragnarok. However, the major problems shine brighter than all of that. The script is just really poor and feels like it was written by a child in many respects, particularly in the joke department. The film has no idea how to balance its tone, feeling far too immature towards its more serious subject matters like genocide and cancer, and misses far more than it hits on its jokes (namely the screaming goats joke, which was arguably the MCU's worst in any movie and felt ripped from ten years ago). A more troubling trend for the MCU as a whole, though, that this movie showcases blatantly is just how much was cut out. There are multiple scenes where it was clear a cut was put in to end a scene before it was intended to keep the runtime down. While this cutting was more subtle in Multiverse of Madness, it was so blatant in Love and Thunder and Marvel needs to let its directors do what they want, rather than keep the runtime down to under 2 hours to get more screenings in. It also works to the movies detriment as Gorr deserved much more screen time than he was given and some character development for the rest of the crew felt so rushed. While not an absolute bore like The Dark World, Love and Thunder is far inferior to both the original film and especially Ragnarok, as well as most of the MCU's other offerings. Expand

The film is obsessed with being "gay" and saying absolutely nothing about that concept. Characters don't have arcs as much as they have "declaration of gayness"... and then that's it. In Ragnarok we learned that Valkyrie was part of an elite warrior squad who was slaughtered and she was the only one left alive. In this film she's exactly the same... except definitively states that she's gay, which I would SWEAR we already knew. Nothing BECOMES of that. That's, apparently, enough as it is. The same goes for Korg, who goes nowhere in the film except to definitely state that he's gay. Like... okay? 50 percent of the films running time is wasted on vague sillyness that doesn't further the plot and aren't even "jokes" per say. Just madcap silliness. This is especially egregious because the film has a FEW great ideas in the "god butcher" concept and the "dying of cancer and in superheroic denial". Even the "Thor has lost everyone he loved" meat is left on the bone.

We got a crappy movie instead of the good one that this has every right to be, and it's all due to not asking more out of Waititi.

The visuals are ok most of the times but god sometimes they are awful. Gorr the god butcher started of well with a sneak peek of his backstory (which was the best part of the movie btw). After that he is pretty your typical marvel villain i have grown tired of.In the end he also has a great scene.
The movie def has a better 2nd half because it get's more serious. Still some stupid jokes but it also has some good moments. This movie might have actually been solid if a lot of the jokes got cut out. It ruins the flow of the movie . The movie also feels strangely tied together imo , i have a feeling a lot of scenes got cut out.
It's time for marvel to give more time for their visuals , plus give a more serious tone for the story because you are ruining source material.

Adding another twenty to thirty minutes to the films runtime could've helped add more context to the story and ease the previously mentioned pacing problem, but instead we have a movie that is too short to tell a fully realized Marvel storyline. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed it, but I think it had some major plot flaws, likewise some terrible decisions re characterisation. Like by the mid-point of the film, they know where Gorr is, and that he's set a trap for them. So they go to the other gods for help, to have an army to fight Gorr. But when the other gods refuse them, it doesn't occur to them to ask anyone else for help! Like earth has a whole planet full of superheroes! Their goat-boat definitely could have fitted a few more people. Literally anyone would have been a big help, as when they go there's only three of them to fight Gorr.

I think another major decision mistake that is going to have consequences down the line is Zeus' stupid (and vaguely racist) comedic Greek accent. Like it is funny in a dumb sort of way, but it's a joke that gets old fast. And the post-credits scene implies that Zeus is being set up as one of the next major villains for Thor/the MCU. Imagine if Thanos had spoken in a stupid accent the entire time! You wouldn't be able to take him seriously... Any films he appears in in future will necessarily have a totally unserious tone. I feel like they've sacrificed the tone of a whole future film for a stupid joke that only lasts one scene in this one.

Anyway, in general I enjoyed it. I think the tone could have been better at times. Sometimes there is too much humour - but in general it was fine. I think some of the plot really just does not make sense though if you think about it even briefly, and they've dug themselves into a hole re the portrayel of Zeus.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A disappointment. There seems a total disconnect between the comedy scenes with Thor and the heavy dramatic scenes with Gorr the God Butcher (including child kidnapping) and Jane Foster (battling cancer). It definitely feels like the success of Ragnarok went to Taika Waititi’s head and no-one had the power to tell him that a lot of the jokes he has in Love and Thunder aren’t funny and too often undermine the Thor character who comes across as a bit of a dill by the end. The one actor who shines is Russell Crowe who is fantastic as Zeus. The CGI is very ordinary too. Expand

It was interesting seeing a female version of Thor in Natalie Portman's Jane who becomes the Mighty Thor after she seeks out Thor's old hammer when she is diagnosed with stage-four cancer. Of course, the original male Thor is still the main character in the film. Jane and Thor rekindle their old romance in the movie. The movie is fast-paced, as I already established it can be silly, and there is a lot of action and pretty realistic cgi. The movie attempts to gain political points by featuring some LGBT side characters, though this is a minor feature of the film and not very distracting fortunately. Expand

But the relationship between Thor and Jane feels a bit forced still, however. I don't really believe there's love here, but it's very much on par with Thor 1 and Thor 2 and I give it a pass, because I enjoyed seeing her again. A couple of jokes felt flat, and that's a shame. The movie sometimes feels like it's trying too hard, sometimes even not being serious enough during important scenes. But all in all, I liked this.

They do ditch the guardians rather quickly. Based on the trailer, I had imagined they would play a bigger part. But in the end, this might be for the best. The butcher has a great design, and Christian Bale is great in this. But perhaps the god butcher does not really do a whole lot of god butchering after all. Perhaps a lot of wasted potential right there.

The next target? New Asgard... Ever since the events of Endgame the MCU has felt rather directionless, and to be honest this movie doesn’t really do anything to change that. There are a handful of funny moments, but the biggest issue with this movie is that it leans into the absurd humour far too often, frequently to the detriment of the characters and plot. It’s not as dull as some of the other entries into the MCU, but it’s not one I’ll bother watching again. Expand

Watching this made me realize how much of Ragnarok was an accidental success. Taika has made a mess here throwing a mass of sketch comedy ideas at the audience in the early first half. With marvel no longer riding the coattails of a successful run of films, the weak effort in the writing of this film this really stand out. Also throw in a tonal mess flipping from ridiculous to serious and add in some woke-ness for good measure (is it really necessary to sexualise so many characters in an action adventure film?). Add this to the growing list of poorly written marvel production s. Expand

I actually liked it first and was leaning towards an 8/10. Then I noticed more and more flaws. Lets start at the beginning. The Thor movies were a staple and the previous movie Thor Ragnarök was the best of them. So we all were happy that director Taika Waititi returns. However phase 4 of Marvel is a bit divisive to say it mildly. It taught me and my friends not to watch the movies in the cinema without consulting reviews by trustworthy critics first. As the reviews came in it looked like a disaster. So I waited until it came to Disney+. After the introduction of a character I wont spoil it follows the set up of Avengers Endgame were Thor travels alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy. However he has some sort of a midlife crisis when he gets an emergency message. Someone is on a quite successful journey to kill all gods in the universe. This is the set up. They use a famous story arc from the comics for this and I hesitate only to say the comics are better because of Christian Bales great performance. While the story is decent to good the characters feel a bit weird. Thor behaves a bit strange and also Jane and Valkyrie feel sometimes forced into character changes that are not explained well. Don't get me wrong I like both the characters and actors. The cast with Chris Hemswort, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale and, Tessa Thomson are great. Also I like all the children and cameos in the theatre scene. The fights are amazing and the final battle is quite entertaining. Never underestimate a bunch of …. The humour was the most divisive part in other reviews. A lot of people say the use too much humour and it drags the movie down. I disagree as it was not that overburdened for me. However not all jokes are good and this drags it down a little but to be fair there are some incredible humorous and entertaining scenes. The special effects are top notch as always. The sets and costumes mostly deliver and I would praise the movie in this regard. The negatives are that like I said the characters are a bit strange compared to before, the story they follow from the comics is better and I do not like a bit of the arcs and developments. Overall I am a bit divided. The more I think about the movie the lower my rating goes. It tricked me not enough into making me believe its awesome. I give a 6/10. Expand

I rate it 5.5. The first part was ok even though many hit and miss jokes and plot much more boring than in previous, but second part just got stale and even for me, who watched it for Waititi type jokes as in previous Thor, this was not good.

For a 6 rating, this movie was actually very entertaining and definitely had its funny moments. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fui assistir o filme e assim estava MUITO haypado.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If i'm honest, the end is the thing that justifies this rating, it's amazing how from the black and White parte to the ending there are the only that's good, and I was so satisfied when the movie ended. The villian is the best thing from the movie, and it's taken seriously from almost all the movie. But, the fest of the movie is absolute dogsh*t, the humor is trash and the other best character (Jane) is flirting with Thor ffs they were couple for 2 datos man, how can they be so annoying. The other caracteres that interested me were the GotG, and they only are on the first 10 minutes even thou they were on the trailers. Also, special mention to the **** goats they are the most unfunny, stupid and annoying thing on the film, all because the people un Marvel thinks that **** is what makes people laugh. Also, I don't know why people say that Jane should live, because it's a message to Gorr seeing someone related to a god dying that made a good thing for her daughter, that is the opposite to the god from the start, and it would difficult the development of the MCU with such powerful Hero (also It happens the same in the comics). Honestly, I think that you should try to not to rage with the ****ty humor because, overall, the good thing outstand the bad things, and the música they choosed is just epic. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was a nice movie, a fun one even, but it felt more like a comedy than an action movie, the props looked like they were toys, the jokes were way too much and way too cringe, Christian really did good potraying Gorr but I wish we saw more of him in his glory, and atleast saw some of the Gods being actually butchered that would've been fun to experience and also the villain turning good at the end of the movie is really boring..The fight scenes were good but the visual effects felt more like a CW show, 6/10. It is clearly aimed at children with constant jokes throughout the movie. Length is surprisingly long with very few action scenes and the few action scenes there are pale in comparison to the ones from the previous Thor movies. The villain is an interesting idea that was executed very poorly in this movie. For a so-called god killer you really don't see him killing any gods except for one but it was very comical and very child-like like something you'd expect from a kindergarten school play. I feel they wasted so much time on someone's illness that could have been better spent by showing us the villain actually killing some gods. 5/10 a decent watch with your kids, not really worth watching otherwise even if you're a fan of Thor.
