The first third of this film features the trio in a rapid-fire, expletive-filled tribute to the Blaxpoitation films of the 70s, complete with retro looks, film grain and cue dots*. It's often funny with Foxx continually dropping hilarious off-kilter observations. The 2nd third introduces the conspiracy and their attempts to find the truth, which creates an interesting mystery. The final third falls apart with mediocre action scenes. What started out with lots of satirical promise, loses momentum, but it's still a raunchy romp thanx to the 3 leads and their delightfully outrageous characters. * In the film projection days, the film had a literal dot in the upper right corner to signal time for a reel change. This became unnecessary with the advent of digital projection, but the threw it in just as a fun Easter egg for buffs. Expand

I enjoyed this fun and crazy romp. Part exploitation films from the 70s, a little Get Out, Boondocks and Blac Dynamite but still original it was a wild ride

Great movie, characters and story. At the same time a blast because of the wild characters, funny dialogue and outlandish story, it stayed with me because of the disturbing underlying societal issues it cheekily addresses. Will watch it again.

That’s particularly true for twoWhen a drug dealer (John Boyega) in a predominantly African-American inner city neighborhood dies in a revenge killing, his friends and colleagues are stunned to find him alive and healthy the following day. That’s particularly true for two of his regular associates, a pimp (Jamie Foxx) and one of his ladies of the evening (Teyonah Parris). Together, the unlikely trio proceeds to investigate what’s going on, only to soon find themselves in the midst of a fiendish social experiment involving cloning, mind control and behavior modification targeting their entire neighborhood, a clandestine initiative operated by an evil organization headed by a bigoted mastermind (Kiefer Sutherland). As intriguing as that narrative may sound, however, the picture’s execution leaves much to be desired. For starters, the film is trying way too hard to imitate the works of writer-director Jordan Peele, with more than a few thinly veiled elements that echo “Get Out” (2017) and “Us” (2019). Then there are a number of serious technical issues, most notably the picture’s truly horrendous sound quality (generally throughout, but especially in the first 30 often-undecipherable minutes) and its needlessly dark cinematography (there’s a big difference between atmospheric and incomprehensible). To top that off, many of this release’s attempts at humor fall flat and/or lazily rely on shamelessly milking well-worn stereotypes, often verging on insulting. To its credit, “They Cloned Tyrone” does offer some valuable (if a bit overly obvious) pieces of social commentary, making the second half more watchable than the first. It also features a fine performance by Parris, who often steals scenes and leaves her co-stars in the dust. Nevertheless, writer-director Juel Taylor’s second big screen feature fails on so many fronts that the shortcomings undermine what could have been a hilarious sci-fi thriller if left in more skilled hands (like Jordan Peele, perhaps?). Take a pass on this one. Expand

Entertaining? Yes. Original? Not really.

The plot has enough intrigue, and its leading trio sustains the story properly, but there comes a point where the plot itself wants to emphasize the social theme so much that the rest gets lost, and instead of focusing on entertainment, the filmmaker seems more interested in delivering some sort of lecture.

They Cloned Tyrone primarily feeds on the paranoia that abounds in conspiracy theories. Above all else, it highlights the central point that the government and corporations conspire to keep things from us, concealing a sinister and tantalizing truth we are not allowed to see. Ironically, people often believe they are too smart to fall for such deception, not realizing that they themselves are creating their own versions of the truth.

But the undercurrent of paranoia is what fuels this movie. It starts with the familiarity of everyday life in the characters' existence and the reality they embody as stereotypical drug dealers. However, everything changes when the protagonist dies in one scene and then reappears alive in the next. That's where this movie really begins.

The conspiracy that unfolds makes Get Out seem tame by comparison, yet the sinister and intriguing premise doesn't lead to more satisfying results because instead of flowing like the thriller it purports to be, almost the entire third act focuses more on explaining stuff rather than providing thrills.

In essence, the film becomes excessively elaborate instead of intuitive and relaxed. It strives to overemphasize a concept rather than letting it unfold naturally.
It's not that viewers don't understand the concept, but rather the plot insists on constantly reiterating it, as if assuming the audience can't grasp it on their own. This approach ultimately weakens the overall impact of the film.

It's not the average junk with which Netflix usually fills its catalog, but it doesn't succeed in demonstrating anything outstanding either.

It has a very witty and fun script with an exceptionally strong chemistry between our main trio. John Boyega gives a great performance as the main character, Jamie Foxx and Teyonah Parris are both very charismatic and funny. There is also a strong visual and costume direction with a great score as well. It does unfortunately get very predictable in the 3rd act and feels a bit of a sudden rush to the end. Nevertheless, a very charming and fresh take on the mystery genre. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Did they actually shoot this on film? Was it just Netflix encoding making it look pixelated and blurry? Were the grain effects etc fake? All irritating questions I had on the back of my mind, I must have hit alt+ctrl+shift+d a dozen times during the movie to try and figure out if it was still in 4k. Which is a shame because the cinematography, set pieces, costumes, and lighting are AMAZING in this movie. Jamie Foxx giving quite possibly my favorite performance of his career yet, and making an incredibly fun team with Boyega and Parris. In a way this reminds me of the movie Palm Springs, it starts off as one thing then quickly morphs into a fun scifi romp. There are some logical inconsistencies here and there, possibly some of it is intentional, but one aspect of the movie "the three words" really bothered me since in the real world it would have unraveled the entire ending of the movie. However none of my complaints are enough to take away from how fun the movie is, how original it is, how well acted it is, how well shot it is, etc. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Expand

The Truman Show meets Get Out. An ode to blacksploitation films of old. Good for a few laughs and almost genuine mystery in the first 1/2, but it’s ultimately a rinse and repeat of modern race politics. It’s full of violence but there’s a clear distinction between how it portrays black on black violence (as sad, tragic consequence only induced by outside, ie white, forces) and black on white crime (as necessary and cathartic). When sci-fi begins to reaffirm the mainstream narratives to justify violence then it’s time to question whether it’s actually sci-fi and not just budget propaganda Expand

They cloned Tyrone

This blaxploitation flick tells the story of a Black trio trying to uncover a government cloning project.

They cloned Tyrone is a creative and thrilling ride, with several twists and turns. The trio of John Boyega, Jamie Foxx and Teyonah Parris are bursting with great chemistry, confidently leading this movie. The brilliance of this movie is mostly tied to this trio.

They cloned Tyrone's biggest flaw is its plot. It's bold and expansive but needs ample explanation which isn't always done satisfyingly. The movie starts well but as the twists and turns begin to unfold, it losses its cohesiveness; plot holes and untasteful cases of convenience show up. In a world of other recent blaxploitation flicks like Jordan Peele's Get Out, They cloned Tyrone pales in comparison solely because of how its plot is wrapped up, but it's a good entry for the genre especially with the performance of its leads.

They Cloned Tyrone is one of the best movies I've seen in awhile. They filled up those two hours with so much fun, comedy, drama, suspense and action! This movie Felt like a great mashup of Black Dynamite and Us.

I thought the cinematography was on point, it wasnt the typical normal settings on a camera. It looks like they put some thought to it being that it was like a sci fi horror flick, I think that the grainy hazy dark filters capture that mood.

The social commentary was hilarious and tragic at the same time, but never felt ham-fisted or overbearing. Exposed some real life issues.

I think this film was executed well and the plot never felt force. Definitely worth watching.

It's been a while since I was invested in a movie that's different to what we've seen. Now granted that this film does make use of Stereotypes, Racism and to be honest some truth about black communities to create comedic and quite effective scenes in this movie.

Not only that but the music, the cinematography, the action scenes and the sense of mystery are well implemented in this film.
While it does have some shortcomings such as the way them N***** Speak.
You will be hearing a lot of, how would I put it, African American Slang? Sometimes it's hard to understand what they are saying so I recommend Subtitles for this.

Other flaws are some logic in the film, you might notice some, but the main one of concern is the one used twice(Olympia Black). It doesn't make sense considering the implications but I get what they were going for.

Other than that this film is solid, new, and fresh, something we haven't really seen before, or in a while and most likely will never see again for a while.

Let's see them Ratings, N****:
Visuals: 9/10, So close to perfection.

Music: 9/10, I dig the music.

Plot and Logic: 8/10, There are problems but besides that a really good time.

Story: 9/10, Outstanding use of, well you know.

Characters: 8/10, Needs some more spice in the chicken, but it's good.

N*****:10/10, I don't see a problem with the word, though Metacritic just might.

It's an 8/10, I'm thinking of other flaws but I can't think of any, the characters are relatable enough given their roles, oh and John Boyega shines in this film.
Jamie Foxx is a little on the side, and Teyonah Parris did a good job.

Huh, I honestly thought this film was going to be throw-away, but I'm shocked, I like this.
If you like the hood stuff, with a good balance of dark, comedy, and Satire, this may indeed be the film you need to watch.
You know what, Watch it, it deserves attention.

The movie has great directing, amazing production and costume design, and incredible performances from Jamie Foxx and John Boyega but the film does have some flaws. The movie is supposedly set in the 70s but it references Michael Jackson’s Thriller which was released in the 80s and SpongeBob which was released in the 90s but overall the film is very enjoyable and hilarious.
