Absolutely awesome in every way. There was nothing i would change about this movie. The forced Baptism scene was one of the greatest moments of cinema in the past century.

While it is one of the more overt and slow paced movies of out times, it is one of the most subtle and interrogative. I do have some problems with its length(I think PT could have filled some areas with something of interest) and I do not have yet any conviction on its ending I admire it for the degrees it reaches. The allegory is so self referential and all encompassing and yet it achieves nothing but poignancy. PT is a subtle master of building the drama-he is very patient and very crafty and I often think he intends to test his audience (Magnolia with the frogs-why? I hated that decision at first and as time went on I began to admire it for his brazen decision, which has no parallel in cinema) I was underwhelmed when I first left the movie and as the days went on it propagated throughout my bones and I felt like I had to see it again, and did, and while it might not be my favorite movie, I have never been so thankful for a piece of art. PT and DDl seem to have invented emotions, however, the do not. They uncover things that I don not believe anyone has ever expressed at least not with a comparable eloquence. DDL's performance is BIG, and thats why I think some people think it is over the top. His presence is big when he doesn't bat an eye. The most memorable part of the movie is his stare right before he threatens to slice the mans throat. The whole production is big and subtle-typically an either or concept, however not here. Its is the execution of an exquisite and surreal histrionics that is needed to enrapture a part in our history that reveals a timelessness in our soul with an acuity and honesty that I is without analogy, save the allusions in found in music. If your attention span has been shortened by our world of instant gratification, don't go see it, but it gripped my attention from beginning to end. If you are one of the hollywood sheeple, you will simply expect to have everything laid out for you to follow so that you won't have to use that space between your ears. I know it is hard you big babies, but c'mon. As for overacting ..... have you ever seen an episode of "Cops?" People can act pretty crazy, and I thought DDL did a great job of portraying a guy who spends most of his life repressing his emotions only to suddenly let them burst forth from time to time. The music .... hello it is supposed to be creepy. As for the supposed indictment of capitalism, oil, the gilded age, etc, I just didn't really see it that way. That was just the setting, and though it was a great one, the story that was being told could have taken place elsewhere and in another time. Go see it and form your own opinion, but see it again after you have some different life experience, and see if you don't get something else out of it. I usually say to each their own, but if you can't dig past the surface of this film, well yes indeed, you are pretty stupid. And deep inside, I think you know it. Expand

Anderson's prior films, Boogie Nights was humourous but I could only enjoy it once. Magnolia had a powerful replay value and moved its images through pity, weakness, sadness, and beautiful cinematography in its vignette of personalities. Punch-Drunk Love was unexpectedly enjoyable, yet it also weighed on pity, sadness, weakness, in other words, the very common, all-too human, pathologies with an injection of splendid, raw humor. Emotionally, There Will Be Blood was unlike anything P.T. Anderson had ever done before; and, in comparison to other films, something most directs would never dare. This film's emotional foundation is a cold and gleaming gold, a sense of power, a depreciation of everything egalitarian, handicap, and democratic. I was blown away, he is the best living director and this particular film affirmed this rank. However, in terms of this rarely used emotion of esoterism and power, Ingmar Bergman will always remain both father and master. Expand

Daniel Day-Lewis gives a intriguing performance as Daniel Plainview, constantly allowing the viewer to be torn between excitement for his success and business flair, and sickness at his greed and cold-heartedness. The movie tackles many social values as it winds its course through history, including religion, prophecy (or the lack thereof), and trust. At almost three hours long, the movie begins at some points to border on excess, yet each time pulls the viewer back through the use of gritty action, tense dialogue, and an excellent soundtrack. It may leave readers of Upton Sinclair's "Oil!" slightly confused, but does capture points from the book most relevant (and understandable) in today's world. The final three minutes of the movie leave audiences scratching their heads if they are interpreting much of the movie correctly, but this is a small price to pay for an excellent showcase of the American experience. It will most likely not win best picture, due largely to its massive scope and strongly suggestive subject matter, but Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano both deserve Oscars for their performances. This movie shines as not just a movie experience, but as an achievement in cinematography as well. Expand

The film is not constructed An American classic. There has been a lot of complaining that the film is boring, pointless, and the ending: horrendous; but what those that think that fail to realize is that this is a definitive character study. The film is not constructed on the basis of telling a linear story, it is merely a 2.5 hour analysis on the deranged persona of Daniel Plainview. The running time, for me, is enough time to fully flesh out this strange character and director P.T. Anderson doesn't waste his directorial skills on doing so. As a result, we get a relentless, at times sadistic, tragic American-dream-tale of a film. By all means, the film comes out strange and offbeat at times, but that does not deny the brilliance of the acting, directing and cinematography -- all of which are wisely used in this landmark of a film. and then the film began. i'm not someone who gives a synopsis of a film in my reviews since i feel it can infringe on the viewer's experience. i prefer to explore the various creative elements of the piece and my experience/reaction to those elements. i had no doubt going into 'there will be blood' that daniel-day lewis would be incredible as a nihilistic oil magnate driven by ambition and greed. i was also not worried about the direction since i really enjoyed paul thomas anderson's previous three films ('boogie nights', 'magnolia' and 'punch-drunk love'). i had no way of knowing that this film would not only be both anderson's and lewis' best film to date, but also a master work in music (radiohead's jonny greenwood), cinematography (robert elswit - 'good night, and good luck', 'syriana'), editing, art direction, sound editing, costumes and makeup. no other film in recent memory has impressed me on every level as this film has.

i also want to specially recognise paul dano who plays a young preacher and is lewis' only real adversary in the film. dano orginally had only a small role and another actor was initially cast in the role of the preacher [http://www.calendarlive.com/movies/cl-en-dano2jan02,0,924101.story?coll=cl-movies]. dano stepped in at the last minute due partially to his previous work with lewis and i am grateful that he was up for the task. since winning best debut performance at the independent spirit awards back in 2001 for playing howie blitzer in l.i.e., dano has had memorable roles in 'the girl next door', 'the king', 'fast food nation' and of course 2006's 'little miss sunshine'. this is one young actor that deserves to be watched and i hope he at least gets a nomination for his incredible work in 'there will be blood'.

So please let an Average Joe explain it to you. The title of the film refers to the future (our present) and the effect almighty oil will have on man. "There WILL BE Blood". It's prophetic - but only because it refers to the here and now. And like it or not Daniel Plainview is the good ol' U.S.A. (maybe I should say the current administration). He has become warped by power and greed - to the point where he will deceive, cheat, and go close to insane. It all culminates in an act of unprovoked and pointless violence against an old foe. I'll let you all guess what that represents. Oh yeah, and oil represents oil. No metaphor there! C'mon people, Paul Thomas Anderson makes a movie in the year 2007 about oil! Two days in a row, and two days of incredible movies that portray humans at their most raw. Still afflicted with Oscar fever, I followed up my viewing of The Reader with There Will Be Blood, which won Daniel Day-Lewis an Oscar for Best Actor last year.

Gritty, cold and, at times, cruel, this period piece set in the late 1800s through the Great Depression, There Will Be Blood is, at its core, about the business of...well, business, versus the business of salvation. Neither are proven to be better, or worse, as the case may be, than the other except for maybe, in the end, Daniel Day-Lewis' character is shown to be more exact in his evil, while his moral counterpart, Eli, is shown to be naive in his selfishness.

Paul Thomas Anderson continues his track record of unique and heavily character-driven films, in the vein of Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Punch-Drunk Love. As usual, his characters are immensely flawed and capable of the most atrocious of actions. He's quickly becoming a master of creating characters who actually do what only our darkest moments think of doing, if then.

As usual, Daniel Day-Lewis is outstanding in his role, commanding immense strength on the screen. The Oscar was well-deserved.

My only real criticism of the film is that the portrayal of Eli's religious con-man being made into the weak, whiny hypocrite that he becomes, comes across more as a personal indictment of Anderson's rather than an necessary element of the movie, specifically Eli's senseless murder in the end. Unlike the seemingly objectivity of The Reader, There Will Be Blood shamelessly overexaggerates the stupidity of the congregation (and, believe me, I cannot believe I'm saying that since I generally believe Christianity to be silly). If Eli is proven to be a great fool, what then of the congregation who put such faith in him? It rubbed me the wrong way, but didn't make me enjoy the film less. Perhaps portraying Daniel as an empty, soul-less man is meant to counter the naivete of his enemy.

He played a staggering roleThere Will Be Blood has to be the best movie of the decade, and an all-time favorite, and the man who helps the movie be as brilliant is Daniel Day-Lewis. He's that kind of actor that makes any film worth seeing. He played a staggering role in Scorsese's "Gangs of New York", and then makes an even better attempt in this. Paul Dano plays the supporting character as a young preacher, and boy was he perfect for that role. He should of won "best supporting actor", but at least Day-Lewis won. There Will Be Blood is a story about an oil man named Daniel Plainview and his adopted son, H.W, who make their way across California, trying to dig out every last bit of oil they can find. Having met by a young man, saying that there was loads of oil on their land. Having to travel miles to their small home, they lied and said that they were hunting for quail. After a while of the hunting, H.W found the oil. Then, when having dinner with the family, Plainview brings up the oil found on their land and asks if he could buy the land for three thousand dollars, and the family immediately says yes. But one of the family's sons, named Eliot, who's a young preacher for the towns church, disagrees and asks for ten thousand. This starts a rival between the oil man and the preacher, which will create loads of problems for both, that will also cause murder.

This film may be my favorite movie of all time. This also had some parts that gives the movie resemblance to Kubrik's classic, "2001: A Space Odyssey", but like a western version, with the long stretch of the violin, and everything else quiet. I don't really find this slow at all, the whole time it was exciting and really interesting to watch. I bought the DVD without ever watching it before (though I knew it was going to be good), and now I can easily say that I made a great decision. Please watch this movie! I guarantee that if you have a passion for film or a huge fan of Day-Lewis, you'll love it!

For me, it's Anderson's best, and one of the best films of recent years, because it combines realism (which some people mistake for lack of plot) with intensity, action with meditation, and amazing performances and settings. Jonny Greenwood contributes a haunting but earthy score, whose rawness often plays off the characteristic intensity of Day-Lewis' antiheroic protagonist.
