I already sensed P.T. Anderson's hackneyed and puerile affectations in Magnolia, and even hints of it in the otherwise compelling Boogie Nights, but this film makes it painfully obvious that Anderson totally misses the potential depth of his own film (!) and instead leans on camp or soap opera pathos. For this film - it's all about the camp, which in a wierd way kinda makes, it cool (I gave it a 7 for glorious camp). Especially the gothic type film title before the final credits - what was he thinking? total camp!… Expand

heres a film that take you on a ride with minimal information and stunning characterization by ...lewis and a score that just keep pushing you perfecting Andersons craft and narrating a course that unlike many films seem to be out of this world ..

This movie reminded me so much of Stanley Kubrick - especially the opening and closing scenes - except that it may be better than anything Kubrick ever did (which is saying a hell of a lot). The humanity in this movie is definitely there - it just doesn't ram it down your throat like 99% of movies - which makes it all the more affecting in the long run. The intense focus of "There Will Be Blood" only makes Daniel Day-Lewis' performace even more astonishing. Day-Lewis' subtle, intimate intensity is mirrored and magnified by the surrounding cast.

I absolutely loved this movie. I had doubts about watching this movie but since the first scene it trapped me until the very end. I think the most important thing that this movie show us is the fact that not everything in life is money, I absolutely loved this movie. I had doubts about watching this movie but since the first scene it trapped me until the very end. I think the most important thing that this movie show us is the fact that not everything in life is money, success cannot be achieved only by earning a lot of money as we can see with Mr. Plainview (which now i can see why the academy gave Lewis the award). The performance by Duno was very good too and i came to hate the character. The music gives it a great atmosphere and what can you say about the art decoration, outstanding. One of the best movies i have seen this year (2008).… Expand

One of the most intense movies I've seen. Daniel Day Lewis is great; but equally as great is Paul Dano(the silent kid in Little Miss Sunshine). Epic battle between good and evil, but hard to tell which is which.

No doubt about it: TWBB is better than 99% of the trash that comes out of Hollywood. It isn't perfect, but for an intense and vivid drama, you won't find much better. It's prophetic - but only because it refers to the here and now. And like it or not Daniel Plainview is the good ol' U.S.A. (maybe I should say the current administration). He has become warped by power and greed - to the point where he will deceive, cheat, and go close to insane. It all culminates in an act of unprovoked and pointless violence against an old foe. I'll let you all guess what that represents. Oh yeah, and oil represents oil. No metaphor there! C'mon people, Paul Thomas Anderson makes a movie in the year 2007 about oil! It's not that hard to figure out! It's a cautionary tale - and a pretty great one at that.… Expand

TWBB is a magnificent film with strokes of genius. The incredible performance of DDLewis and the tantalizing and unnerving soundtrack of Johnny Greenwood is just amazing. Fantastic movie. I was worried about whether I liked it or not, but it enthralled me, and I actually saw past what some call a bad ending and saw a great moral lesson. Greed and selfihness lead to misery and despair in the end. The musical Fantastic movie. The musical scores were fantastic, done by none other than the genius Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead (my favorite musician ever is Greenwood, favorite band is Radiohead). People like Jeff B. obviously don't know what the intentins of the scores were. It wasn't supposed to be music, but more a backing to support the escalation of the film's suspense. … Expand

Only thing bad about this movie is that it's very slow paced and takes quite some time to really get into. By the end of it however, You will love it. It is definitely a slow movie, but that's life - some things are fast and some things are slow. But both can have an equal impact. I have seen it 3 or 4 times now - I find it is quite mesmorising and the story compelling. It is more bizarre than anything else, with the story taking some odd turns at times and playing strange scenarios which you don't expect. Which maybe why I enjoyed it so much - it seemed fresh, it didn't spoon feed me the standard film format and put all it's A,Bs ad Cs in the right order. It was 2 years after release that I watched this, and I didn't read any reviews before I did watch it. Just because it is long and slow with odd music and even stranger dialogue, doesn't necessarily mean it is pretentious - but if you look for it to be, you will most likely find it will be. I did not, I just found it interesting and enjoyable. But then I found the hangover boring so what do I know.… Expand

While I agree with most of what everyone who loves this movie says about it, I do feel that it doesn't succeed in a couple of areas where the true greats do. If there is such a thing as too much ambiguity, Blood has it. If there is such a thing as too much ambiguity, Blood has it. We learn so little of Plainview that when he does interact with other characters it is impossible to know when he is lying or telling the truth. This gives Plainview little motivation as a character. In contrast to the people who love this movie I feel this is why some people find this movie boring. If we had just the smallest amount of back story on Plainview I think what he does would make this movie much more interesting to those that find it boring. Although Anderson does give us very small glimpses into his characters motivation in his movies, we fail to get even that small glimpse with Plainview. Of course on the positive side Anderson has created another set of characters that stay with you for weeks after viewing the movie. He moves his characters through these worlds he creates in such a way that we become entranced with the characters and the atmosphere. Of course Lewis is brilliant and deserves every bit of recognition he has received for this role. Last but not least the final scene in this movie is mesmerizing. The final confrontation between these two characters is brilliantly written and brilliantly acted. This is one of my top 5 endings for a movie ever, from the much hyped bowling pin, to the less talked about line. "I'm done".… Expand

Paul Thomas Anderson's epic masterpiece "There will be Blood" is a steadfast reflection of the very essence of capitalism in America, where domination, not gain, is the ultimate objective, and by any means necessary.

When we first meet Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) in 1898, he's mining for gold in a shaft he has dug into the ground of his Texas property. He finds what he's looking for, and perhaps more. Several years later, he has shifted his focus from gold to oil and he has been able to hire some hands. When an accident results in a death, Daniel finds himself with an infant orphan to care for. He raises the child, known as H.W., to be his own. By 1912, Daniel has become a well-known oilman, and he his looking to expand his empire. Accompanied by his partner, Fletcher (Ciarán Hinds), and his son (Dillon Freasier), he travels to California to follow a promising lead. What he finds there astonishes him. He seeks to buy large parcels of property, but he is impeded in his goal by the evangelist preacher Eli Sunday (Paul Dano), who wants Daniel to donate $10,000 to the local church before he sells. After the contract is signed, however, Daniel reneges on the deal. Shortly thereafter, once the first drill has become operational, there is an accident that results in an explosion that fuels a major oil fire and costs H.W. his hearing.

For most of the film, Daniel is a fascinating character. He's a mass of contradictions: charismatic, ugly, easygoing, ruthless, silver-tongued, plain-spoken, gentle, violent. He's smart and understands how to manipulate every situation to his advantage. He understands the business of oil and transforms himself from a poor miner into a wealthy businessman. Unfortunately, the more power Daniel amasses, the more corrupt and dissolute he becomes. Anderson chronicles Daniel's personality decay intelligently. He establishes the character as an admirable individual, but eventually his morality slowly erodes. The lives of these two, Daniel and Eli, are self-centered, cunning, and ruthless men who collide and lead us into the dark, unpaved path of madness of self-destruction driven by their unrelenting greed.

“There Will Be Blood” is a rich character study of a fascinating individual who is by turns likable, loathsome, admirable, monstrous, and driven. Set in the early 20th century, it depicts oilman Daniel Plainview's relentless quest for wealth, and how this quest for wealth eventually changes him for the worst. This movie is more of a slow burner, but the pace fits well for the story which it tells. One doesn't simply become a soulless capitalist overnight; Plainview's moral decline plays out over the course of nearly three decades. Despite the movie's slow pace, it will still absorb you with its compelling story, as well as with Daniel Day-Lewis' scintillating performance as the merciless oilman. Paul Dano also shines as the charismatic preacher, Eli, who buts heads with Plainview. The technical aspects of this film are brilliant as well. The soundtrack is quite fitting, and the cinematography is captivating too. Overall, There Will Be Blood is undoubtedly a masterpiece.… Expand

Paul Thomas Anderson's 'There Will Be Blood' deservingly won 2 Oscars and was nominated for 6 more. Daniel Day-Lewis was given an entire year to prepare for the role of Daniel Plainview and it shows. Even more incredible is the fact thatPaul Thomas Anderson's 'There Will Be Blood' deservingly won 2 Oscars and was nominated for 6 more. Daniel Day-Lewis was given an entire year to prepare for the role of Daniel Plainview and it shows. Even more incredible is the fact that Paul Dano was given just 4 days (!) to prepare for his breakout role as Eli Sunday after he was originally cast to just play the smaller part of Paul Sunday (the script was quickly re-written to make the brothers twins so that Dano could pull double duty). While the Oscar for Day-Lewis' performance is a no-brainer, the other--for cinematography--is actually quite debatable. Sure, the Texas locations and landscapes were quite remarkable, but there were also plenty of times when the images on the screen were unnecessarily dark. I would've preferred if the film won the Oscar for best sound editing (for which it was indeed nominated) as the use of sound--including distinct moments of silence--heightened the overall viewing experience to an even greater degree.… Expand

I have agonised for years, obsessing about what actor in history was the best in a single movie. There are others that are equally perfect, Brando in On the Waterfront (1954), Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Ledger in The Dark Knight (2008), De Niro in Raging Bull (1980), Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs (1991), Pacino in The Godfather (1972), Spacey in American Beauty (1999), Streep in Sophie's Choice (1982), Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Olivier in Hamlet (1948), the list goes on... However, no role has required the same level of character transformation and method acting that DDL did as Daniel Plainview. This was a masterpiece in creating nuances, changing speech and inflections, body language and raw acting ability. Day-Lewis is a chameleon that somehow completely morphed himself into another individual, especially one as complex and unique as this one. He stands as one of the best actors of all time with the likes of Nicholson and Brando.… Expand

Paul Thomas Anderson is incomparable with his direction, detailed and authentic yo a point of non fiction. An analysis of the allure and trappings of greed and ambition, set near a time where such egotism would collide with post war optimism into a cataclysmic stock market crash. It's script is bare in that it doesn't try to say much and places most effort on the subtleties of the actors body language. Daniel Day Lewis is a centerpiece in this drama and captivates with a demure grandeur that constantly feels on the verge of madness, until the epic moment it finally gives way. Paul Dano is nondescript in his duel performance as twins Eli & Paul. Eli simmers with a madness anchored in religious self righteousness that casts a condescending veil of ego that corrodes against the thinning sanity of Daniel Plainview closing the movie is a bloody pulp. Watching these perspective spirals leaves you breathless not out of sympathy, I don't think anyone of the characters inspire that kind of attachment, but out of apprehension.… Expand

This is quite a long drawn out movie at over two and a half hours long, one which clearly and unsurprisingly focuses on the presumed need for power and effect of greed and financial motive on people, local communities caught up in the oilThis is quite a long drawn out movie at over two and a half hours long, one which clearly and unsurprisingly focuses on the presumed need for power and effect of greed and financial motive on people, local communities caught up in the oil game, prospectors etc. it has quite a haunting musical score, with what sounds like almost ghostly wail noises present around three quarters of an hour in. It really felt quite claustrophobic in parts with the low key yet somewhat spooky soundtrack, with heavy use of stringed instruments and low beat drumming creating a very tense feel at key points. Also featured are elements of one up manship, highlighting the competitive aspects of bidding for oil and as well as this, religion strongly plays a part, when a man dies in an accident while down one of the wells, a local priest come supposed healer warns that it could have been avoided, had the well been allowed to be given a simple blessing but he's told that this would have only slowed down the process of extracting the oil, so it was never going to be allowed. He also mentions having seen some of the men involved drinking, stating that it can't be a good idea when they need to be alert on site but again his worries are overlooked. Things get particularly heated as the plot develops and I couldn't help feeling sorry for him.

Paranoia also plays a part and I have to say it is a pretty gritty watch in parts, seeing how various characters react to set situations, getting an idea of how they interpret things as they see it, often (presumably) in a much different way to the way we'd see things. Its quite sad to see the toll thats paid in different forms, what such people went through but I suppose it has to be remembered that there was more poverty in those days - this being set in the past of course, it having quite a rural Wild West type feel to it. I suppose it is a case of every man for his own (hence the element of paranoia present), so that would make sense. Given the motives and even actions of the main cast, you'd be forgiven for thinking their pretty selfish and not especially caring but after another accident occurs, Daniels emotions really come in to play and he's faced with a tough decision, having to play different roles as a parent and a prospctor or site manager I suppose - anyway, his more caring nature is brought out. This makes it a more interesting watch, as I always find it difficult to stay keen on a movie that goes on for a long time when the characters don't appear to be particularly likeable.

I found this quite engrossing and atmospheric, almost too much so, being quite claustrophobic due to the camerawork (some quick changes of shot and interesting angles used at times) and the sinister score playing in the background. Among the spookiest and perhaps most atmospheric scenes, are those of Daniel and a previously unknown acquaintance he gives the benefit of the doubt to, who spend time together alone, the spookiest scenes being set at a campfire and indeed fire is very much present throughout the movie, in different scenes.

There was some interesting dialogue in this movie, although it could be seen to be a little bit bland in parts. The scenes involving the healer carrying out ceremonies in a local makeshift church are quite moving - indeed at first you'd think the locals mock the idea of religion but later on it becomes clear that those in need of healing rely on that as a form of obviously hope to them. Given the plot that develops, its quite a bleak movie but I liked how the different characters, family members and others adapted - things do change in time but I wouldn't call it necessarily a very Hollywood movie in the classical sense of that term.

The character portrayals really made this what it is - if the script was different or performances perhaps more wooden then it would be different but as it is, I thought this was a quality movie.

Just to add that cast and content wise, first off content - of course there's moderate violence present, quite bloody violence at times and there's also strong language present, as well as perhaps one or two sexual references but thats about all I can think of thats probably worth mentioning. Onto the cast, which give very good performances and Daniel Day-Lewis plays the main character, Daniel Plainview - coming across as a stern, no nonsense man who at times also isn't afraid to show his deeper side when battling emotions, while Paul Dano plays the religious healer, Eli Sunday. He seems quite plain by way of physical appearance but becomes very animated in certain scenes and the interaction between both of these key members of cast as their relevant characters, works well.… Expand

I fell in love with this movie in the first 20 minutes when not a single word was spoken yet I was just entranced by the whole thing. It pulled me in so quickly. The music is so undeniably beautiful I find myself listening to it off of Spotify all the time and I was amazed to find out it was Johnny Greenwood’s first major film. There are not enough words to talk about DDL he is himself which is someone who respects his craft to the utmost and handles every role like it’s his life. Paul Dano steals the show in a couple scenes which really does say something and he truly is underrated in this movie. Every scene in this movie feels purposeful and driven. This is perfection. Then I wanted to re-watch it.
And that was a perfect judgement.

The reason for that is that Daniel character represents the modern personality sickness in a so subtle form.
- He wants to be rich more than anyone around him, and he does not want to deal with anybody.
- He does not give a damn about people. They are just tools, means for him to reach his own goals.
- He hates everyone.
- He is angry inside.
- He is envious inside.
- He believes everyone can be manipulated.
- He does not have a faith, but he can be Christian, can be Muslim, or a Jew at a finger snap, no problem.
- Same goes in politics, he can be leftist, rightist, feminist, environmentalist, communist, BLMist, racist.. you name it..
Bottom line is that whatever he choose to be should be serving his grandiosity among others.
- But in the mean time he wants to love people, and to be loved. Deep inside he is empty, longing for all those feelings.

He wants to fill his emptiness with a normal human being, but that is something he can not do it.
That is not his nature, so he is in a continues suffering state.

Another great sphere of the movie is that you hardly notice these personality traits on Daniel for the first half of the movie.
And this is exactly about these psychos in reality; deception.

In the first half of the movie, Daniel appears like a poor countryman man striving to be a self made millionaire.
But his dialogues, his facial gestures, his body language are so subtle in presenting the modern psychopath I described above.
Daniel starts his own oil drilling adventures in late 19th century in New Mexico.
One of his workers dies in an accident. And he adapts his son, H. W.
Daniel is also single.
Viewer feels the oddness of this adaptation because Daniel is not type of man who has empathy, care for anyone.
I think this is one of the best part of the story, because viewer is always kept in a suspicion on true character of Daniel.
And answer to this adaptation comes at the end of the movie, may be in the best scene, and dialogue of the movie.
It is the best articulation of the Daniel's psychopath.

Movie goes on with Daniels rising about his Oil business together H. W. by buying some poor and religious farmers' land in California.
Although movie concentrated on Daniel, in my view, it takes a twist after half of it concentrating on preacher of the village church, Eli.
Eli is the son of the farmer from whom Daniel bought the land.
Eli asks for money for the church, he wants to have a bigger, better church.
Though Daniel hates Eli's money ripping of him for Church, he still does all those payments.
Even in in his dealings with Christian farmers, he comes to a point he gets baptised and confesses his sins.
Deception is his normal part of life.

But movie, portrays the Eli no less deceptive and sick than Daniel.
This Paradoxical appearance of sick minds of Daniel, and the Preacher is so captivating..
It is a social paradox between "good" and "evil".
And both are suffering inside themselves, their paradoxical sick personalities.

Both characters of Daniel, and Eli dominates the movie.
Daniel Plainview, and Paul Dano casting these characters are magnificent.… Expand

An intense, brutal and uncompromising look at greed, religion, ambition and the corruption of morals.
The P.T. Anderson and Daniel Day Lewis collaboration is a match made in heaven and here they have produced one of the best movies of the decade.

The production design, costumes and, of course, photography are out of this world. Nevertheless, Daniel Day-Lewis' performance and Paul Thomas Anderson's direction can't be described with any adjective but PERFECT

There Will Be Blood is along with Pulp Fiction my all time favourite movie. This film is superb. But this film is much more than that. It is the most beautiful film ever created on the relationship between church and capitalism and it is an understatement to call it an absolute masterpiece. Daniel Day Lewis here gives the greatest performance that an actor has ever given in the history of cinema. Everything is so perfect in this film that a 10/10 rating can't be enough.
