It feels like a powerful analog to Gladiator, telling a story that resonated heavily in the modern world. Viola Davis was **** incredible. On top of justifying herself as a bonafide action star, she brought the raw emotionality that has won her Oscar’s before. The supporting cast was stellar as well, unbelievable turns all around, you can feel the passion of the performers burning through the screen.

Don’t believe the reactionary man babies who are triggered by anything that doesn’t validate their worldview. This movie is a powerhouse.

Of course, Viola Davis is great, John Boyega is a pleasure to watch, as are the other actors. The score is beautiful, costumes are fabulous. Storyline is completely different than expected. It was really very good. Do not listen to these negative reviews; they’re mostly by people who never saw the film. Or by racists, or sexists, take your pick. They all say, "This tribe were slave traders, look it up." Well, yeah...that's what the movie is about, which you'd have known if you'd seen it. Expand

Just left the movie and I must say that #thewomanking is a great movie!

Solid story, awesome battle scenes, great character build, gorgeous photography and way above the avarage actors.

I strongly recommend fantasy and historical lovers to watch it. It was indeed a great surprise just to be off a bit of mainstream comedy behavior of action thrillers nowadays.

#violadavis as Nanisca is a giant as usual, but Izogie is freaking awesome and the young Nawi is pretty good too.

The battles are believeble, the woman most of the time make uses of their speed to win fights and you see the danger when they are fighting other trained warrior males.

I'm sorry to see so much hate around the movie. It surely does not deserves it.

When I first saw it I thought it was going to be your typical wokified feminist flick, till I saw some of the reviews from some of me favorite reviewers. I’m really surprised to see these user ratings on this one . I know user ratings have become basically useless these days. My guess is some people have gotten offended for some unknown reason without seeing the film . I’d say watch the film for yourself and decide . It’s extremely well acted . The cast did a phenomenal job. All of them , from the main to supporting cast . The film is absolutely gorgeous from start to finish . The action is good and on top of that the story was entertaining and engaging from start to finish. I was always engaged in the story and above all else , I cared about the characters. I feel like the film tells exactly the story it wants to tell the way it wants to tell it . This isn’t a story about noble characters without flaws, it’s much more complex then that . For the final hour of this film , I found myself on the edge of my seat. When the credits roll I was definitely satisfied. One of the better films I’ve seen this year for sure . I’d say it’s a 9/10 but when I’m still giving it a 10 because viola Davis was incredible and she deserves that extra point. My only nitpick is , I think this film would of been even better with the R rating . Expand

Review bombing it because it takes creative liberties makes no sense because taking creative liberties to craft a compelling story is the name of the game. The goal of this movie isn't to educate or mislead about historical events. It's to get people to think about the scenarios that were crafted and the way they relate to the grander picture of slavery. In fact, I'd argue that these negative reviews only play into creator's goals, as it urges people to look up and familiarize themselves with these occurrences. Besides, the significance of the historical inaccuracy is grossly overstated in these user reviews. The Dahomey's own involvement in slave trade and cruelty in warfare is addressed on multiple occasions. Y'all were just too blinded by your racism and sexism to take note of these aspects even when they're right in front of you. Or did you just happen to miss all the gruesome fight scenes, beheadings and mutilations? For ef's sake the movie *starts* with the Agojie -- the highly trained military women -- mercilessly killing an entire village chiefly comprised of relatively defenseless farmers! Expand

The movie events take place in the 1820's, when their determined general (Viola Davis) leads the fight against another tribe that captures their fellow Africans to sell into slavery. The settings and design create a picturesque world, while the intense performances give the film it's heft (of course, Davis is richly nuanced). It's sometimes hard to follow the fights, but they ultimately add some decent action moments. For that human touch is a tender story of love and redemption. There are slow portions, but the movie is sufficiently interesting and the subject is fascinating enough to make it sometimes stirring Expand

Director Gina Prince-Bythewood, story writer Maria Bello and screenwriter Dana Stevens take up the Agojie tales to make a vibrant story about independence and ferocity. Viola Davis is great as the ruthless Nanisca, but Thuso Mbedu and Lashana Lynch steal the show with their formidable yet tender performances. "The Woman King" is a good movie. It's brilliantly staged, with fun set pieces and a bevy of terrific performances. However, in choosing not to tackle some of the more controversial elements within the history that it's based on, it all ultimately feels like a bit of a fast one is being pulled on the audience. Make no mistake, there's no shame in liking a movie. Seemingly no external harm will likely come from people enjoying "The Woman King." I just think an even better movie could have come about if the filmmakers in question chose to confront certain historical actualities from a more post-modern perspective. That being said, it's still a feat as a film. Just not necessarily as a representation of facts. Expand

I didn't think much of this one based off the posters and previews initially. It just honestly looked like nothing we haven't really seen before, but the rave reviews and apparent A+ Cinemascore it received convinced me. And while Davis is as excellent as always, the film's storyline and plot beats really are all too familiar territory. And with the exception of Davis, the lack of character development for most of the supporting characters made them feel all too one dimensional. However, the film also does contain some epic and entertaining battles scattered throughout, and it's hard not to admire the film's extensive production values and design. But overall, Davis is is top form here and carries a commanding presence from start to finish, along with some epic and expertly-choreographed battle sequences that make up for a familiar-feeling story that lacks character development. Perhaps it pushes the message too much and makes a basic mistake when stories like these try to project powerful women.
And by this, I mean that, in the urgency to show them as wonderful and amazing women, it forgets to give them a true identity.
This is not to say this film is bad in any way, but a problem does exist.

Granted it has the negative historical aspect on its side, but even though this film is extolling these warriors, the fact that there are people still beating themselves up about what happened centuries ago doesn't deepen that discourse at all.

Now speaking of the film itself, even with the distinct premise and how convoluted it can feel, the spectacle makes up for it enough to keep your attention and while it never quite lives up to the promised epic, it's far from disappointing in that aspect as well.
Along with great production work and design, this story immerses you well enough to provide the audience with an entertaining moment. Which I believe it aspired to it more, than even the resonance of its message.

Accuracy has been compromised to create a blockbuster, which is nothing new to my opinion (Titanic, Marie Antoinette, etc). To claim that this is a feminist or woke move is to claim that cinema can't change its point of view. But they could have chosen to change some names to make it more fictional. Expand

It's only a symptom that's been consistently appearing in film reception and criticism where black stories are told. An uncomfortable pattern of accusations of wokeness, reverse racism or pandering flooding conversations of a fictional story. What I find interesting is how absent these complaints are in media that gives watered-down depictions of European history, colonialism, segregation, greek/roman age etc. How in those aforementioned examples creative licenses are rarely used to discredit the entire medium. Nonetheless Woman king is a failure in its own right. As film independent of political criticisms its a wasted effort. Boasting an astonishing cast of black actors its weak script and lackluster cinematography leave a lot to be designed. It feels formulaic and the stakes don't really land as intended. It's as if we're watching parts of a complete movie ,like it's been badly edited for time. Which is unfortunate. It's idealism though wrongly criticized for being propaganda and dishonest us mostly just a barrier for the telling of a more complicated tale of survival, power, gender roles, slavery, Africa and womanhood. It instead feels like an action movie rather than the complex historical fiction drama it wants you to think it is. Expand

Historical revisionism aside (and hoo boy was the movie pretty much based on rewriting history), this is one of those movies where it could have been entertaining... if only everyone else had the main lead's talent.

Viola Davis tries to salvage the film at great effort, but can't quite manage to carry it on her back alone, though anyone who says she didn't try is lying.

An interesting premise that could have been done much, much better than it was. Nothing was stopping them from inventing a fake fantasy country like wakanda. Or even better: from spending that big budget on actors who were closer to Viola's level (IE not boyega). Sadly, they did neither.

In the course of frequently checking my watch, I was subjected to 2+ hours of sloppy writing attempting to cover historical fuzziness, despite the film’s contention that it’s a historic epic set in an alternate historical timeline (which is kind of like claiming that someone is almost a virgin or just a little pregnant). On top of this, the endless saga is peppered with too many extraneous subplots that detract from the protagonist’s narrative, silly story elements that don’t make sense, far too many repetitive war dances, corny dialogue, frequently gratuitous and credibility-stretching fight sequences, and a disappointing performance by Viola Davis who tries to come off as a badass African-American female version of John Wick. The finished product thus ends up playing like a project put together by a committee of producers. To its credit, the picture includes historical material that some might find uncomfortable, a few noteworthy and heartfelt scenes in the home stretch run, and modestly entertaining touches of comic relief, but that’s small compensation for everything else this one gets wrong. I’m sure politically correct viewers will eat this one up, especially when it comes to addressing matters of female empowerment, but I also can’t help but wonder how any enlightened woman would look at this and say that the secret to being a better individual is to act more like male macho schmucks. Because of all this, I’m truly at a loss to understand what so many critics see in this release. Even as a pure entertainment vehicle, it just doesn’t measure up compared to many of the other action-adventure offerings out there. Wait till this one comes to streaming – and only then if you have nothing better to do. Expand

I could dismiss it by quoting Silvio Danese: "Amazons against slavers: the [militarist] action movie in the time of #meToo". I could aggravate the criticism by adding that the epic cancels the sentimental melò and vice versa. But the situation is even more serious: a culture of the ephemeral that deliberately leaves no traces of itself since it builds eternal reboots on the desertification of memory (as for "Avatar 2").

So I decided to look this tribe up on Wikipedia; this is what I found: The growth of Dahomey coincided with the growth of the Atlantic slave trade, and it became known to Europeans as a major supplier of slaves.[2] As a highly militaristic kingdom constantly organised for warfare, it captured children, women, and men during wars and raids against neighboring societies, and sold them into the Atlantic slave trade in exchange for European goods such as rifles, gunpowder, fabrics, cowrie shells, tobacco, pipes, and alcohol.[5][6] I don't expect perfect history from Hollywood, bit we don't need to like slavers either. But because I've almost always appreciated and liked the roles that Viola Davis chooses, I gave it a try.

After Viola Davis declarations about what it would mean if people didn't went to see the movie, a big part of me wanted nothing more than to not even see the movie. But I took her statements, as her making a huge mistake, that might hurt an actual good movie.

And as it turned out, I wouldn't have lost anything if I hadn't watched this movie.

From Viola Davis, to Lashana Lynch Izogie and others. The performances were for the most part solid, and the natural beauty of the African continent all helped to make the movie tolerable.

However try as they might, and they did try, history didn't happened that way. Not exactly. The Woman King gives you the Hollywood edited version of history, but it doesn't give you the actual history. The ugly side of the tribe that Nanisca (Davis) is portraying.

It's understandable why they did what they did, seeing the times they were living, and the movie should've owned that, instead of trying to embellish the truth. Anyone with an ounce of common sense would've understood, or at least tried to understand what was happening historically in that period of African history.

But apparently they are too ashamed to own to their own history. Maybe because the actresses and actors, didn't even bother to study the history of what they were going to be portraying.

The movie is not good, not really. It's watchable, not just because of the performances but also because of the beauty of the African continent, and also in part the culture as well. However they could've cut twenty minutes to the movie and you'd have lost nothing.

It has too many moments that are slow paced, and then it just puts in the fifth gear and doesn't slow down. To the viewer that doesn't know anything about what they're watching, they might be deceived into thinking they saw a a movie about female empowerment, and how to fight against oppression to preserve one's freedom. Because that's what the movie tries to sell.

And it's really because of the embellishment of a hard reality, that was the reality of those times, that I couldn't really appreciate this movie. It would be like applauding inaccuracy for the sake of creating a nice story, instead of owning the truth and show how many times sacrifices and hard choices need to be made.

I completely understand how some people might be more than willing to close their eyes to those things, but the dual standard isn't lost considering other historical movies were also a target of great scrutiny. And if memory fails you, then remember the criticism done about Kingdom of Heaven for not accurately portraying the Islamic side of history.

So if all other historical movies have been subjected to critic of their historical accuracy, then The Woman King doesn't get a free pass. At least not from me.

And then there's the story of the movie itself. Completely predicable from beginning to end, some of the dialogues were cringe as cringe can be, and some actresses like Viola Davis tried to sell their roles so hard that it came out as far over the top.

Twelve Years a Slave was a great movie, however The Woman King is not. It's watchable in a way that you can see it and pass the time, but without ever getting pulled into the story.

This movie will add nothing to the career of the actresses and actors in it. And it will add little to viewer, that spends the 135 minutes watching it.

And so there's no doubts, this movie lost me because a) the story isn't good enough b) the story is too predictable c) some performances are just too over the top and d) the historical inaccuracy is unforgivable.

The tribe that is being represented are real villains not heroes. They were cannibals and the ones who raided, pillage and raped other villages for their needs and they were the one who sold off other tribes as slaves to the new world called the United States of America. When the world decided to get rid of slaves they denied the change and the patriarch or the leader said they would fight for a hundred years to keep slaves. This made the French people go to war with them and in turn very quickly lose and had to stop slavery and their cruel ways. This movie is fine but it is not a second black panther or a good representation of African people pertaining to history. Expand

These where slave traders. Also the only reason that women and children are used in warfare is as a diversion and confusion tactic to hurt morale for the opposing side. If you honestly think that a group of women could put up a fight against male warriors you are probably also a sheep who thinks that men and women should compete in boxing and mma with disastrous results. We even have to divide the genders in banal things like soccer for that matter to give the women a chance to compete. You need to look in the mirror and realize that the person who stares back is a foolish sheep who swallows any modern lie that is told to you.
