Say no to Netflix BS historical revisionism! And, for the record, there is a word for "woman king" - it's "queen".

Woman King," a film marred by its forced adherence to a misguided "woke agenda," ultimately derails any chance of delivering an authentic portrayal of historical events. The filmmakers' ill-conceived attempt to inject contemporary ideologiesWoman King," a film marred by its forced adherence to a misguided "woke agenda," ultimately derails any chance of delivering an authentic portrayal of historical events. The filmmakers' ill-conceived attempt to inject contemporary ideologies into a narrative steeped in the past only serves to undermine the film's credibility and betray the rich history it purports to represent.

Right from the opening scenes, it becomes painfully evident that "Woman King" is more interested in promoting a specific political ideology than in accurately depicting the tribe's history. The narrative forcefully shoehorns modern concepts and agendas into a bygone era, sacrificing genuine historical integrity in the process. This heavy-handed approach does a disservice to both the subject matter and the audience's desire for a faithful account.

The film's characters suffer greatly due to this imposed "woke agenda." Rather than presenting them as authentic individuals with their own complexities and motivations, the script reduces them to mere vessels for pushing an agenda. This reductionist approach strips away any semblance of depth or realism, robbing the audience of the opportunity to engage with the characters on a meaningful level.

Furthermore, the blatant disregard for historical accuracy in favor of pushing a predetermined narrative is not only disrespectful but also insulting to the intelligence of viewers. "Woman King" trivializes the struggles and triumphs of the tribe it claims to represent, relegating them to a backdrop for promoting contemporary social and political viewpoints. By doing so, the film manipulates history to fit an agenda, distorting the true essence of the tribe's heritage.

The inclusion of the "woke agenda" in "Woman King" becomes increasingly apparent as the film progresses. Subtle nuances, cultural complexities, and historical context are sacrificed in favor of superficial and often polarizing messaging. Rather than encouraging a nuanced understanding of the tribe's experiences, the movie serves as a mouthpiece for a predetermined ideology, alienating those seeking a genuine exploration of history.

While some may argue that introducing contemporary themes into historical narratives can be thought-provoking and relevant, "Woman King" fails to strike a balance between historical accuracy and modern perspectives. Instead, it serves as a cautionary tale of how an imposed "woke agenda" can overshadow and undermine the very essence of a story, leading to a shallow and disingenuous portrayal.

In conclusion, "Woman King" succumbs to the pressures of an imposed "woke agenda," sacrificing historical integrity in favor of promoting contemporary ideologies. This misguided approach diminishes the authenticity of the film's narrative and reduces the characters to mere vessels for pushing a predetermined agenda. Ultimately, it leaves audiences yearning for a genuine exploration of history rather than a shallow and politically motivated interpretation.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Does it count a spoiler to try and make sure everyone knows this is about as historically accurate as "Paranormal Activity"? The dahomey tribe was a main proponent to the slave trade near the founding of our country. Lionizing that tribe is a bad look. With as race-baitey Hollywood is, youd think actors like bottega, who cry racism at every turn, would do some research. I guess he also gets paid to act and does a **** job at that too so... smh. When I first saw it I thought it was going to be your typical wokified feminist flick, till I saw some of the reviews from some of me favorite reviewers. I’m really surprised to see these user ratings on this one . I know user ratings have become basically useless these days. My guess is some people have gotten offended for some unknown reason without seeing the film . I’d say watch the film for yourself and decide . It’s extremely well acted . The cast did a phenomenal job. All of them , from the main to supporting cast . The film is absolutely gorgeous from start to finish . The action is good and on top of that the story was entertaining and engaging from start to finish. I was always engaged in the story and above all else , I cared about the characters. I feel like the film tells exactly the story it wants to tell the way it wants to tell it . This isn’t a story about noble characters without flaws, it’s much more complex then that . For the final hour of this film , I found myself on the edge of my seat. When the credits roll I was definitely satisfied. One of the better films I’ve seen this year for sure . I’d say it’s a 9/10 but when I’m still giving it a 10 because viola Davis was incredible and she deserves that extra point. My only nitpick is , I think this film would of been even better with the R rating . Expand

I Was Scrolling Through Rotten Tomatoes And I Found This Movie, First I Was Under The Impression That This Was Just A "Women Are Amazing And Man Suck" Movie Type, Until I Looked In The Ratings And They Were Pretty Good So I (Guy That Had Nothing Better To Do) Decided To Watch The Movie. After All, Rotten Tomatoes Wouldn't Lie To Me Right??? After The THREE **** HOURS I Spent Sitted Down Watching This **** Hollywood Made, I've Come To The Conclusion Of A Few Things.
1) Whoever Directed This Propaganda Clearly Had NO **** CLUE Of What They Were Doing As If You Search The Tribe That Is The So Called "Hero" You Can See That They **** SLAVED BLACK PEOPLE And The French DESTROYED THEM TO STOP THE SLAVERY MAKING THIS SO CALLED "Based On Real Events" Be A Complete **** Lie.
2) The Actors Who Worked On This Are Terrible, Their Acting Just Made Me Lose Even More Intrest In The Movie, It Just Feels Too Artificial To Make Me Even Bother To Try To Form Some Sort Of Connection To The Characters.
3) The Agenda This Movie Contains Just Feels Like They're Shoving Their View On The World With No Consent Or No Trouble With Yours, Pretty Much Putting That If You Think Something On Their View Is Wrong, You're Something That Ends In "Cist" Or "Phobic" And We Can't Forget About The Women Are Wonderfull And Men Are Disgusting Pieces Of **** And Shouldn't Exist Stereotype.

But the situation is even more serious: a culture of the ephemeral that deliberately leaves no traces of itself since it builds eternal reboots on the desertification of memory (as for "Avatar 2").

It's only a symptom that's been consistently appearing in film reception and criticism where black stories are told. An uncomfortable pattern of accusations of wokeness, reverse racism or pandering flooding conversations of a fictional story. What I find interesting is how absent these complaints are in media that gives watered-down depictions of European history, colonialism, segregation, greek/roman age etc. How in those aforementioned examples creative licenses are rarely used to discredit the entire medium. Nonetheless Woman king is a failure in its own right. As film independent of political criticisms its a wasted effort. Boasting an astonishing cast of black actors its weak script and lackluster cinematography leave a lot to be designed. It feels formulaic and the stakes don't really land as intended. It's as if we're watching parts of a complete movie ,like it's been badly edited for time. Which is unfortunate. It's idealism though wrongly criticized for being propaganda and dishonest us mostly just a barrier for the telling of a more complicated tale of survival, power, gender roles, slavery, Africa and womanhood. It instead feels like an action movie rather than the complex historical fiction drama it wants you to think it is. Expand

Forget the fact that this tribe sold their own people and slaves from other tribes into slavery to the white man. It's whitey who is evil. I could have a bowel movement and produce a more interesting movie than this. It would actually resemble many of the characters in the film too. I have no more thoughts on this garbage film so now I leave you with Shakespeare's Macbeth scene 1 act 1. Thunder and lightning; three witches enter.

First Witch When shall we three meet again - In thunder, lightning, or in rain?

Second Witch When the hurlyburly's done,

When the battle's lost, and won.

Third Witch That will be ere the set of sun.

First Witch Where the place?

Second Witch Upon the heath.

Third Witch There to meet with Macbeth.

First Witch I come, Graymalkin.

Second Witch Paddock calls.

Third Witch Anon.

Review bombing it because it takes creative liberties makes no sense because taking creative liberties to craft a compelling story is the name of the game. The goal of this movie isn't to educate or mislead about historical events. It's to get people to think about the scenarios that were crafted and the way they relate to the grander picture of slavery. In fact, I'd argue that these negative reviews only play into creator's goals, as it urges people to look up and familiarize themselves with these occurrences. Besides, the significance of the historical inaccuracy is grossly overstated in these user reviews. The Dahomey's own involvement in slave trade and cruelty in warfare is addressed on multiple occasions. Y'all were just too blinded by your racism and sexism to take note of these aspects even when they're right in front of you. Or did you just happen to miss all the gruesome fight scenes, beheadings and mutilations? For ef's sake the movie *starts* with the Agojie -- the highly trained military women -- mercilessly killing an entire village chiefly comprised of relatively defenseless farmers! Expand

Accuracy has been compromised to create a blockbuster, which is nothing new to my opinion (Titanic, Marie Antoinette, etc). To claim that this is a feminist or woke move is to claim that cinema can't change its point of view. But they could have chosen to change some names to make it more fictional. Expand

Dahomey was enslaving Africans before the intercontinental slave trade began and they continued to do so even after Britain outlawed it in 1840. The Agojie were not heroes by any measure. They killed slaves as part of their training. There are accounts of them executing hundreds of men women and children during royal funerals and religious rites. Historical revisionism aside (and hoo boy was the movie pretty much based on rewriting history), this is one of those movies where it could have been entertaining... if only everyone else had the main lead's talent.

Viola Davis tries to salvage the film at great effort, but can't quite manage to carry it on her back alone, though anyone who says she didn't try is lying.

An interesting premise that could have been done much, much better than it was. Nothing was stopping them from inventing a fake fantasy country like wakanda. Or even better: from spending that big budget on actors who were closer to Viola's level (IE not boyega). Sadly, they did neither.

I am prone to berating movies that take culture out of context.. For example, a movie where English is spoken in Japan would always score less than one where Japanese is spoken in Japan..

This movie is not only culturally inappropriate (speaking English in African nation) but it is terribly historically inappropriate.. It baffles me that black Americans would star in a movie that basically shames the pains that their ancestors went through at the hands of slave traders.. For this reason, it deserves to feature a ZERO..

This is like Jews starring as Nazis and depicting a group of female Nazi guards at a concentration camps as heroes who brought about the end of the concentration camp - rather than depict the camp as truly being liberated by Russian men fighting for the Red Army..

Utter garbage.

They were cannibals and the ones who raided, pillage and raped other villages for their needs and they were the one who sold off other tribes as slaves to the new world called the United States of America. When the world decided to get rid of slaves they denied the change and the patriarch or the leader said they would fight for a hundred years to keep slaves. This made the French people go to war with them and in turn very quickly lose and had to stop slavery and their cruel ways. The movie events take place in the 1820's, when their determined general (Viola Davis) leads the fight against another tribe that captures their fellow Africans to sell into slavery. The settings and design create a picturesque world, while the intense performances give the film it's heft (of course, Davis is richly nuanced). It's sometimes hard to follow the fights, but they ultimately add some decent action moments. For that human touch is a tender story of love and redemption. There are slow portions, but the movie is sufficiently interesting and the subject is fascinating enough to make it sometimes stirring Expand
