'The Void' was clearly influenced by the work of HP Lovecraft and John Carpenter in terms of story and style. But manages to be it's own thing rather than reference their work.

It's a weird and flawed little gem.

There were so many nonsensical moments just for sheer shock value, even though they had great practical effects on a low budget. The entire cast and crew must have left positive reviews, because I can't imagine anyone in the audience thinking this movie was decent. Most people must have felt like they wasted their time with this movie and didn't want to waste any more by leaving a review. I'll be the guy to waste a little more time to prevent other people from wasting theirs. The acting was okay, not gonna slam any of the actors, but theyre not likely to win any awards either. The practical effects were okay. You could tell it was low budget since it didn't show any stabbing or cutting. Most of the monsters only appeared in flashing or low light conditions where you couldn't notice detail or lackthereof. That made it a little interesting, I guess. Now for the script... One of the worst movies I've ever seen. No substance, no backstories...I was just waiting for all the characters to die so I could go back to living my life. Save your time and money, this movie is awful Expand

For me, I need to give this movie a perfect 10. Sure I can nit-pick the story, etc., but that was one hell of a ride. I had no clue what was going on, but didn't care. Movies rarely freak me out, but I'll be thinking about this one for a long time.

Grandes efectos practicos y buena premisa, aunque se pierde tributando sus influencias. Lo que queda es como cuando quieres resumirle Lovecraft a un millenial.

A lot of people get pulled in by the nostalgia factor the moviemakers were clearly going for in the trailer, but this movie has only the most superficial connections to classic horror movies. It stars a small-town cop, there's practical monster effects... and that's it. If you want a movie that only has this and absolutely nothing else going for it, this movie was made for you.

For the rest of us, there's just nothing there. There's no story to speak of. The acting is bad, particularly the lead guy who is just terrible. The non-story is that a small-town cop finds a hurt guy in the middle of nowhere, takes him to the hospital, and... monsters happen. It's cliche after cliche. There's a bad guy doctor experimenting on people, there's tentacle monsters, there's monster pregnancy scares... none of this is a spoiler because you can just throw darts at other horror movies and they'll land on all the plot points.

Even the good reviews admit they have no clue what's going on with the plot, because NOTHING IS GOING ON. The actual plot is that the people who made this movie really like the triangle image you see in the trailer. I'm not kidding. The opening of the movie is a triangle, the climax of the movie is a triangle, the end of the movie is a triangle. Whoa, three triangles, deep symbolism bro.

The pacing is the very worst part. The very first scene of the film is a murder. After that the movie never goes more than 15 minutes between action scenes. You don't get time to know your characters, you don't get time to know your setting, so the monsters are running around who knows where attacking who knows who. Who cares?

My summary is: Money isn't the only thing separating mediocre filmmakers from good ones. If you stripped the budget out of a really good horror movie, you'd still have a good horror movie. The original Halloween is a great example- the main special effect is they painted a William Shatner mask white (and yes that's the real story of that iconic mask). The Void has tons of money, they spend it on a ton of special effects, and I was yawning for most of the runtime. Would Halloween have been better if they'd thrown in a dozen gloopy, bloody monsters? I don't think so. Maybe you do. But this just isn't for me.

But I'm afraid to say, this film is nothing like its predecessors and will eventually be forgotten as another mediocre horror film. The acting is serviceable, not great, but it's really the special effects we came here to see, and they are nothing compared to the genius of what Rob Botin did in The Thing. Darkness and flashing strobe lights are used to hide the prosthetics, and even then you just can't tell what you're looking it, it's just a blob of something fast edited. The plot itself is good, but there's no scary stuff here, not really, it's just a shadow of what it could have been. I have to recommend skipping it. Expand

Masterpiece! It's not often that movies come along that really push the eerie creep factor. This movie is not trying to hold back in any regard. Whether it be imagination, or gore, or scare factor, it has it all. It's not perfect, however, IMasterpiece! It's not often that movies come along that really push the eerie creep factor. This movie is not trying to hold back in any regard. Whether it be imagination, or gore, or scare factor, it has it all. It's not perfect, however, I think there is so much content and lore that it needed more time to really convey it all. But what it does, it does with a beautiful flare that certain horror masterpieces have, such as Event Horizon, or In the Mouth of Madness. All it needs is Sam Neil and it would be great! Expand

Technically well made, decent photography, detailed practical effects and no specifically bad performances. i get the sense that the director micromanaged everyone, all the performances and really every element of the movie has a monotone of attention. I think more patient characters should get longer shots, the more disorganized the subject, the more erratic the camera. it's a thought. I also think they should try people taking turns being megalomaniacal or level headed, like if at any given time one character could portray these traits but trade off who. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The practical effects were good, and that's about all this movie had going for it. The plot is one of those vague, half-formed odes to cosmic horror that doesn't have much of an explanation for anything. Mystery is fine, but this entire plot seemed more like a fever-dream than an actual plot - things were happening, the Bad Guy had his "I saw some weird stuff and now I am enlightened" speech, some characters had backstories crammed into 5 minute flashbacks that may or may not have been relevant to their inclusion in the endgame plot, monsters popped up and then promptly faded back into nothing ... I don't know. I saw nods to Lovecraft, the Hellraiser series, Re-Animator ... but no actual substance aside from monster gore and shaky, unexplained philosophy. Expand
