the film is excellent and well deserving of all it's oscar nominations particularly Eddie Redmayne's win for best actor. his performance as Stephen Hawking is one unbelievably good and felicity jones is his perfect counterpart and their onthe film is excellent and well deserving of all it's oscar nominations particularly Eddie Redmayne's win for best actor. his performance as Stephen Hawking is one unbelievably good and felicity jones is his perfect counterpart and their on screen chemistry is very well done.the witting and direction are also exceptional delivering stephen Hawking's life in a way that's very accessible to a wide ranging audience. my only complaint if i had to nitpick is that I personally feel it goes on slightly too long and that 10-20 minutes of the film could have been cut despite it's excellent early pacing.… Expand

A beautiful and emotional drama about one of the most brillant people. Eddie Redmayne deserved the Oscar for this portrayal of Stephen Hawking. Music is also beautiful and the whole movie is a pure 10 in my opinion. And yes, buy The BriefA beautiful and emotional drama about one of the most brillant people. The Theory of Everything is basically a very conventional love story at its core. Based on the memoir by Jane Hawking it is at first surprising to find how much the screenplay concentrates on her. It is to the credit of Felicity Jones thatThe Theory of Everything is basically a very conventional love story at its core. Based on the memoir by Jane Hawking it is at first surprising to find how much the screenplay concentrates on her. It is to the credit of Felicity Jones that she becomes the film’s ace card. She truly shines here as Jane and it is almost totally due to her subtly understated performance that the story’s emotions feel honest and not overly manipulated. Eddie Redmayne is also very good, especially with the physicality the role demands, but surprisingly his role seems somewhat underwritten. The screenplay pays scant attention to his professional achievements concentrating instead on his disability and the challenges this posed to the couple’s marriage. Anyone not knowing anything about Stephen Hawking going in to this film would be hard pressed to understand the reverence in which he is held, the tragedy of his physical battles notwithstanding. Ironically, criticism levelled at 'The Imitation Game' and the lack of personal details about Alan Turing's personal life would be more pertinently aimed here at Hawking's professional one. Montages are adopted to delineate time lines to mixed success, but probably the biggest indication of the film’s failure is due to the fact that one is more interested in the love story between Jane and Jonathan than in the one between Jane and Stephen.… Expand

Great acting in a good movie: Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones are terrific. The Theory of Everything is at its best when Stephen Hawking comes down with ALS. The Theory of Everything is an intelligent biographical dramady about the life of Stephen and Jane Hawking depicting the struggles and accomplishments they faced together. Everything from the production design and costumes to the cinematography and editing helped accent the emotional struggle of the characters. With Oscar-worthy performances by Redmayne and Jones and brilliant direction by James Marsh the audience is taken on a charmingly humorous and emotional ride through the life of the Hawkings.

I was a bit disappointed with the story in two aspects. Firstly, I believe that the film was subjected to some restricted narrative construction to appease the still living subjects of the film. In biographies of deceased people the filmmakers tend to push the boundaries and add a bit of controversy or increased tension. If Marsh was going for a more biographical, documentary film than a biographical drama, then he certainly succeeded. However, I feel even with the restrictions that this film delivered. Secondly, I was not pleased with the lack of science in the film. This film is about Stephen Hawking, one of the greatest minds to ever walk this Earth, and yet we are more interested in his personal life? Yes the film is a recount of Stephen's life through the eyes of his ex-wife Jane, but being the only film about Stephen Hawking they could have at least explained some of the interesting theories and research he worked on throughout his life.

Regardless this film delivers a brilliantly charming biopic about a man whose dynamism was hidden by his overachieving mind. Although Stephen is the star of the film, the true star of the story is Jane whose strength and dedication to Stephen helped bring us The Theory of Everything. His mind changed our world, her love changed his.… Expand

"Theory of Everything" is, as most people know, the story of Stephen Hawking and his adult life-long battle with a motor deficiency disease (ALS). It is also the story of self-sacrifice and dedication as told through the eyes of his wife of"Theory of Everything" is, as most people know, the story of Stephen Hawking and his adult life-long battle with a motor deficiency disease (ALS). It is also the story of self-sacrifice and dedication as told through the eyes of his wife of 25 years, Jane, who, together with Anthony McClaren, co authored the screenplay based on her book "My Life With Stephen". The film was directed by James Marsh and stars Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones. One must approach this film as both a factual summary of the trials and efforts of a genius confined to the prison of his voiceless and motionless body and, also, as an entertainment vehicle. For the former the film serves its purpose well and is made even more believable by Mr. Redmayne’s remarkable likeness to Mr. Hawkng and the performances given by both he and Ms. Jones. As to the latter, the film is certainly not "entertaining" in the true sense of the word but represents one of those "should see" see films because of its biographical data and the efforts of its two stars. This is indeed a difficult film to rate for much depends on the needs and desires of the viewer and whether he or she considers watching Mr. Redmayne’s character struggle with a catastrophic disability for over 2 hours worth the effort. My experience of the film may well have been affected by the fact that I saw a PBS documentary with the real life Hawkings a few days earlier. That being said, I give the film a 7 rating because it basically is locked to the actual story of the subjects with little or no poetic license or interest creating insertions.. Remember, though, as with "My Left Foot",also a fairly difficult film to watch, it did earn Danel Day Lewis an Oscar and I wouldn’t be surprised if the same fate awaited Mr. Redmayne.… Expand

What makes the movie more interesting is the way of approaching his life, not focused in one aspect, it shows the scientific part, the family part and the illness part. The first one is very impressive, starting by the epiphanies that he experiences, how he developed his theories and how he breaks with current knowledge. The family part gives us a more human image of this genius and his relationship with his wife Jane. And finally, the illness and how the couple deals with it is very well achieved. These last two are unknown for the viewer and James Marsh is not afraid to show the most dramatic episodes making it a heartbreaking story but always realistic. This whole thing goes hand by hand with a breathtaking performances of Eddie Redmayne, it is unbelievable what he has created and Felicity Jones is perfect in her role. Then we have the script, the score (so captivating that distracted me from the movie several times) and the work with the cameras; all very coherent with the protagonist obsession: time, and its sublimation in that magnificent sequence at the end.… Expand

Good movie, did not expect this emotional rollercoaster.
I'm a fan on science (whether fiction or non-fiction) and there's not much theory in here, just barely whetting an appetite for knowledge.

Initial reaction is to feel empathy or sympathy for Hawking, but later you realize he's persevering, well past anyone's expectations (even his own, with the help of his wife).
Great biopic of a genius among us, portraying the real struggles we all can relate to.
In summary, good date movie, see it in theaters if nothing else is available, otherwise wait for it on Redbox or rental.… Expand

The Theory of Everything is a very emotional movie. It'll make you be sometimes happy and sometimes sad, as it's revealed in front of your eyes the incredible life of Stephen Hawking, and the especial relationship that he had with his partnerThe Theory of Everything is a very emotional movie. It'll make you be sometimes happy and sometimes sad, as it's revealed in front of your eyes the incredible life of Stephen Hawking, and the especial relationship that he had with his partner Jane Wilde. All the performances in the film are incredibly astonishing, especially by Eddie Redmayne, being by far the best performance in his career, and one of the best performances of the year. The script captures perfectly the emotional essence of Stephen Hawking's life, making you never feel bored (if you like drama, romance movies). It's also really nice how it's filmed in this classical British kind of format. It really helps to capture the essence.
On the bad side, the movie doesn't has that much science as I would expect it to have for being Stephen Hawking's life. It obviously has some, but there's not much protagonism from physics in it, and that's sad.
Real score: 8.5… Expand

Critics should be aware that this is not a biopic of Hawking's work, it's an ADAPTATION of the book Jane Wilde wrote about her marriage to Stephen. Stop saying that this movie should be about science.

the most beautiful part of this movie is the ease with which hawking answers his life ,in my opinion that is the most original way of living ones life ,director has been successful in showing with hawking's life the true beauty of life itself.a unique piece of work , i won't say it to be inspirational as the idea it suggest me is that try to answer the problems of your life in your own unique way, originality.mesmerized by the simplicity of answers for the, so thought massively complicated questions.the only extra thing that i would have wished for would be a little more inclination towards hawking's scientific work.… Expand

The film focuses on Hawking's relationship through the years with his first wife, and on his theory of black holes and how time works; this may be leaving some parts of his life out, but the man has done so much that the scope of the film suited itself. Redmayne is amazingly accurate in his portrayal of the physicist, and the rest of the cast, including Felicity Jones and David Thewlis, gave brilliant performances as well. I would not be surprised if it didn't show up at the Oscars in some form.… Expand

We get to see the journey and heartbreak that Stephen and Jane had to go through from the diagnosis of his disease to the crumbling of their marriage in a very smooth transition. The film utilizes music effectively by allowing it to be the narrative. Sometimes just a moving picture and sound can tell a story like in Pixar's "Up" and Michel Hazanavicius' "The Artist," simplicity is at most always better. Throughout the dramatic challenges of their life, the screenplay manages to inject humor and hope. Redmayne transforms himself into an Oscar-worthy performance and the film tells Hawking's story with warmth and honor.… Expand

The movie itself is OK, the acting is what prompts a higher rating. The film did seem a bit top heavy (first half was more intriguing/character development focused) while the second half (although well acted) definitely dragged on.

James Marsh’s THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING is the quintessential archetype of this sort and it is going to give Eddie Redmayne the coveted Oscar for such a taxing mission to imitate Stephen Hawking, the still alive-and-kicking bigwig cosmologist. However, Marsh conducts the film with a fluid pace and it wondrously invigorated by its technical crew, particularly Jóhann Jóhannsson’s engrossing soundtrack and the ever-pervasive subdued light from lighting department.

Ok so let me start of by saying that Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones and Harry lloyd did a wonderful performance in this movie.

The Theory of Everything for the first hour of the film captures an amazing part of Steven's life, but after theOk so let me start of by saying that Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones and Harry lloyd did a wonderful performance in this movie.

The Theory of Everything for the first hour of the film captures an amazing part of Steven's life, but after the first hour you are left feeling disappointed, I know this is what happens but Jane dancing around with this christian man and building a tent together does not qualify as character development, the same goes with Steven's nurse, they fail to gave that charm which an audience needs to connect with, I know this movie it trying to stick with the facts but changing the plot a little would not have hurt at all.

Harry lloyd's character that in the moments we saw him really gave that best friend vibe, and it's really upsetting his character was not given a bigger role because it would've really helped saved this film in the last hour.

Eddie Redmayne was fantastic as Steven but after an hour there was no longer a connection with him, I found myself having to listen really carefully to what he was saying, and I was very upset because his performance was great and then cut short, it's like the final hour of the film was rushed and not thought about at all, and as for the nurse he falls in love with, I did not see how Eddie pretending to be a dalek is enough to announce a break up 5 minutes later. These parts were Steven and Jane had their moments with their future partners felt so cliché it was like watching a Disney movie because it was like they just gave up on trying to make a great final hour as opposed to the first hour which was great.

Finally, Felicity Jones who had such a great start and gave such a great performance, at first her character was shy and coming out and wanting to help Steven even though his condition was worsening, but then she meets a man who can play the piano (Who comes off as very dis-likable, as does Steven's nurse) and 3 minutes of montage time and all that connection that we built up with that character was just ended, making the audience feel for her but dislike the character at the same time.

This film was great seriously, it's just the final hour that becomes unbearable, there is not enough character development, and I don't see why these characters were given more screen time than Harry lloyd's character because I think if they used him instead of the two most annoying characters in this movie then the final hour would've been saved. I don't see why they didn't change the story a little.

The last part I have a problem with is the ending, it's trying to do something phenomenal and great, and that would've worked and became truly emotional if they had not ruined the story after the first hour.

I do recommend people to watch this though, it is a good movie for the first half… Expand

This a well-told, sweet story. The two leads have excellent chemistry and Eddy Redmayne knocks it out of the park Stephen Hawking. He's really fantastic. The plot gets a bit slow here and there, but overall I really liked this movie.

I have never been one to know much about Stephen Hawking but it is hard not to find a biopic on his life appeal because he overcame such odds. Eddie Redmayne certainly did an excellent job playing Hawking I wouldn't say he is my pick for the best actor Oscar but it is still a worthy performance. His speaking parts start to decrease the longer the movie goes on, but he certainly looked a lot like Hawking. Felicity Jones however I feel should be getting an Oscar for this role. Hawking's wife is basically as responsible for his accomplishments just as much as he is because she allowed him to think critically and she stood by him regardless.… Expand

It's not a film full with science, massive actions and stunning visual effects, it's just a simple story narrating the life of a noble scientist. Not knowing of how true is the screenwriters adapting Stephen Hawking's life to the big screen, but the moderate pacing does not upset the audiences as it fills with a lot of interesting theoretic dialogues which some might be funny and the special yet specific cinematography has successfully crafted a beautiful life full of love. A big applause for Eddie Redmayne who has worked hard to portray a character with motor neuron disease that looks extremely real, nature yet pitiful; while Felicity Jones is doing great to support by building up a charming and emotional chemistry. With amazing and calm scores from Jóhann Jóhannsson to enhance the overall tone of the film, the biopic inspires us that when there is life, there will be hope and so, to be courageous, to be strong in overcoming challenges, it will still be successful in achieving dreams. If you want a film that is going to inspire you, not with fictional stories, but instead with the use of a true one grounded in reality than “The Theory of Everything” is what you should go out and see right now. It is, simply put, aIf you want a film that is going to inspire you, not with fictional stories, but instead with the use of a true one grounded in reality than “The Theory of Everything” is what you should go out and see right now. It is, simply put, a fantastic, life-affirming film that is propelled forward by its story and its leading roles. In that order. And the rest of the film is pretty good too. But “The Theory of Everything” isn’t all about Stephen Hawking (played by Eddie Redmayne) and how incredible his story is. Instead the film is “part biopic, part love story” with the latter telling us about the imperfect marriage between Stephen Hawking and Jane Wilde (played by Felicity Jones).
Eddie Redmayne is fantastic as Stephen Hawking and what is best at how he portrays Hawking getting worse in regards to his Motor Neurone Disease (/ALS). Redmayne starts the film as a young Hawking and we can tell this guy is clever. But it is as the film goes on that Redmayne’s performance gets better. Halfway through the film we are looking at a slouched Redmayne, slurring his words and occasionally smiling and by the end of the film we are looking at Redmayne playing Hawking as he is now. In testament to this the real-life Stephen Hawking commented, on seeing the film, that he felt he was sometimes looking back in time at himself. I’m with him. His performance is again, incredible, as incredible as the story he has the privilege to tell. If I don’t see him in the running for the Best Actor Oscar come February then I will be surprised.
Felicity Jones performance as Jane Wilde is magnificent too. Although on the surface she doesn’t seemingly require the various skills that Redmayne has to delve into, she again does the story and her real-life counterpart justice. Although she starts the film as a student, we come to see her having to raise 3 children as well as look after her husband and you feel that she really is going through all this. Again, the real-life Jane Wilde was impressed with Jones’ performance. When I think about Best Actress potential this year, she should also be in the running for the appropriate Oscar.
Harry Lloyd is brilliant as Stephen’s university friend Brian too. Although Brian is a mere composite character, he is a brilliant one at that. His attitude is drawn from Jane’s descriptions of “Stephen’s fellow lodgers and research students” at Cambridge: “They talked to him in his own intellectual terms, sometimes caustically sarcastic, sometimes crushingly critical, always humorous. In personal terms, however, they treated him with a gentle consideration which was almost loving.” He could also be in for an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
But it is the story that really propels “The Theory of Everything” forward and it provides for half the reason as to why the films leads are fantastic. The film itself is based on Jane Wilde’s 2008 autobiography “Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen”, a flattering account of their initial marriage and a significantly different, revised edition of the 1999 autobiography “Music to Move the Stars: My Life with Stephen”, a less flattering account of their marriage, sparked when Hawking left Wilde for his nurse Elaine Mason in 1990. (It’s worth noting they quietly divorced in 2006 following a 5 year period of rumours over whether Mason abused Hawking, apparently hitting him, throwing him around and even leaving him in the sun to burn for several hours.) The revised edition was sparked by her and Hawking managing to develop a good working relationship with Wilde.
The story of “The Theory of Everything”, as I said earlier, is “part biopic, part love story”. We learn in the film of how clever Hawking was and how he refused to let his disability stop him from being great, initially managing to overcome the 2 years he was given to live and ultimately managing to become a household name. But this isn’t what “The Theory of Everything” is really about. Although the film does give Hawking his due, it’s not as if Eddie Redmayne has a bigger role than Felicity Jones. Their roles are coequal and the film thus focuses on Stephen and Jane’s relationship, in particular how Wilde had to cope with raising 3 children whilst looking after her husband.
“The Theory of Everything” is a fantastic film with a fantastic story and two fantastic leads. The only problem I had with the film, and it’s always there for me when I watch this kind of film, is although it is never boring, you do find yourself occasionally wondering how long is left. But this is not the final thought I want to leave you with. Instead, let me remind you that “The Theory of Everything” is again, a fantastic film and worth seeing if you get the chance. It tells you something that apparently a nurse wiped a tear from Hawking’s eye when he first saw the film.… Expand

I was really pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this movie. I was expecting a cringe-inducing, inspiration-porn style depiction of disability, which the film did slip into at times (such as the pen scene toward the end), but overall II was really pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this movie. The overwhelming impression I had of Stephen and Jane's life together is that it was fairly normal--in particular, I loved the scenes of the children naturally and curiously climbing all over Hawking's wheelchair and riding it around the house. The Theory of Everything seamlessly shows their life, the personal side of thing, and it's no romantic comedy. The film tells a great deal of what this brilliant man and his wife had to endure. Jane married this genius man, on borrowed time, planning to cherish the little time they had but in time found herself with a husband, whose slowly crumbling body, demands a lot of her. Stephen, this brilliant young man, who had a bright future in front of him, found himself faced with a hurdle he can't possibly overcome and only live with. Their story is beautifully told, fascinating but also cruel.

The Theory of Everything is subtle and clever. Like I said, it's not an overly sugar-coated and romanticized story of Stephen and Jane Hawking. They are portrayed as strong and determined people but they're also flawed, which makes them human and very likable. I was touched all the way through, immersed into the story and into their lives, but I did not pity them I admired them. The immersion into the story is wonderfully accompanied by the score. It gives an extra layer to such a beautiful story.

The cast is just superb, Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones really deserve the nominations and awards they got because they carried the movie. Redmayne was incredible and once you fathom the amount of work and details that went into this performance, you realize how impressive Eddie Redmayne's performance is. Felicity Jones, though, is the cherry on top the movie wouldn't have been as good without her in it. She's sweet and incredibly good as Jane Hawking her eyes speak for themselves in the movie. She's brilliant.

As Biopics go, The Theory of Everything is a great one among the many we had this year with Unbroken, and The Imitation Game, or Selma. When the story's great and you have a very talented cast, the director is often overlooked James March did a stellar job.

I now understand what all the fuss is about. The Theory of everything as a great script, talented cast, is believable and touching.

Ever since I saw the first trailer, I was wanting to see this film. I am a very big Stephen Hawking fan, & I saw this film on New Year's Eve. Eddie Redmayne was not in the movie. Linda Blair got nominated for her role in "The Exorcist", but she sucked in everything else. I think Eddie Redmayne is a fine actor, but really, what did he do that was so special? The role is what won him the award, not his acting. I thought Bradley Cooper in "American Sniper" and Michael Keaton in "Birdman" were better. However, you couldn't always "see" them acting. You can definitely see Redmayne acting because the character he plays is so much more different than Redmayne is in real life. I think it is much harder to play Al Pacino's Michael Corleone than it is to play Jack Nicholson's two dimensional role in "One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" (Nicholson didn't even have to act), but tell that to award voters. They always seem to preferred the extreme. "The Theory of Everything is a decent movie, nothing spectacular. Its worth a look. Yet, in three years most of us will forget that this movie was ever made.… Expand

The problem is that the two theories contradict each other, but since they are employed in completely different realms, there is usually no conflict; however, there are a few situations where the two theories are both applicable and stand in opposition to each other. Therefore, another more integrating and all-encompassing mathematical equation is needed to unify the two theories and reconcile all the forces of the universe, and this is called the Theory of Everything, sought in vain by Albert Einstein himself for the last thirty years of his life.

As critic Mike Scott pointed out about the film, Hawking’s preoccupation with the Theory of Everything appears as a background process, superficially discussed in conversations and occasionally depicted on blackboards filled with mathematical formulas. A layman’s version of the theoretical quest is given by Hawking’s wife, Jane (Felicity Jones) when she tells a dinner guest that there are two major theories of physics to be reconciled, one dealing with the large objects (“potatoes”) and one dealing with the small objects (“peas”).

Since the film is based on Jane Hawking’s autobiography (Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen), the emphasis is on the romance between Jane and Stephen Hawking (played by Eddie Redmayne), their subsequent marriage and raising of children, their heartbreaking but in many ways triumphant struggle with his ALS, and their ultimate break-up. It is actually a fascinating aspect of his life, perhaps almost as fascinating as the Theory of Everything. Through sheer determination, a young man who was given two years to live not only survived for fifty years (and counting), but he resolutely sought to have all the experiences he would have had as an able-bodied adult—career, romance, marriage, children, and even divorce and remarriage, and then another divorce. As a friend who picks up the young Hawking to carry him up a flight of stairs asks rather pointedly, “Stephen, is everything affected?” And Hawking replies, “No, it’s a different system—it’s automatic.” Eddie Redmayne comes as close to becoming his subject as is possible for any actor to get.

Despite the intrigue and complications in his personal life, Hawking was always obsessively at work on brilliant ideas that included the discovery of Hawking radiation, his theories about the origin and boundaries of the universe, and his best-selling popular science books, among other projects and theories, making him one of the most famous physicists in the world. The details of this ongoing intellectual process would have made for an interesting portrayal in the film, since his work is the most fascinating and most important part of the miracle of Stephen Hawking’s life.… Expand

A good biopic on Hawking, the film also manages to be a phenomenal romance film with some elements of period pieces involved in it as well. Additionally, the costume and production design are very good, as is the sequence of Hawking's decline. Each stage is appropriately handled and given its due weight. Though I do not care for the man, he is undeniably brilliant and this shines through in the film and you feel a sort of sense of awe watching his mind work. Overall, The Theory of Everything is not a great film, but it is very close and was very much deserving of its recognition as such.… Expand

As expected, the film focuses far less on Hawking's work than on his relationships and the deterioration of his health. But what makes the film a triumph is the moving screenplay, and Redmayne's startlingly accurate portrayal of Hawking.

The movie tells the origins of the great genius today Stephen Hawking. He falls deeply in love with fellow Cambridge student Jane Wilde. Once a healthy, active young man, Hawking received an earth-shattering diagnosis at 21 years of age. With Jane fighting tirelessly by his side, Stephen embarks on his most ambitious scientific work, studying the very thing he now has precious little of - time. Together, they defy impossible odds, breaking new ground in medicine and science, and achieving more than they could ever have dreamed.

I have seen many actors in the past taking on roles where their play people based on real life with have a serious disease or a disability which involves a lot of training to get the body movement and the speaking spot on, many actors nailed that and so dose Eddie Redmayne.

Theory of Everything is a movie that get's straight to the point and doesn't waste your time with scenes that could have felt unneeded or filler like the TV show The Walking Dead dose all the time.

Eddie Redmayne did the most spectacular, flawlessly brilliant performance I've seen in him in... well in small roles really, this is his actually big role and I hear some Oscar buzz about his performance and I wouldn't be surprise if he get's nominated because he was fantastic in this movie. He got the look, the movement and the speaking like Hawking.

If I had to compare the score to this movie it would be The King's Speech, you know the piano music that so relaxing and peaceful to listen to. Music like that for some strange reason makes my feel more life inside of me, and the people who did the music I give them two thumbs up for that.

But what the movie dose lack on is that they didn't really sell the fact that Hawking is a genius, and we know that he is but in this movie everybody didn't really seem all that filled with his mind blowing work, everybody was all like "Yeah great job man, that's some good stuff". but really they should be losing their sh't over how smart Hawking was.

Theory of Everything is a well made Biography movie with fantastic performers from Eddie and Felicity, excellent directing and a pretty nice score.… Expand

I am a science enthusiast. I went into the movie knowing that this film did not focus on the science that Dr. Hawking studied, but rather the relationship between him and his wife. Nonetheless I genuinely enjoyed the movie. The movie wastesI am a science enthusiast. I went into the movie knowing that this film did not focus on the science that Dr. Hawking studied, but rather the relationship between him and his wife. Nonetheless I genuinely enjoyed the movie. The movie wastes no time setting things up between Stephen and Jane. They are introduced to each other a couple of minutes into the movie, and from there, their story continues to develop. It also showcases the severity of Stephen's illness, and the emotional toll it takes on himself and Jane. Stephen and Jane's relationship isn't sunshine throughout. There are plenty of rocky moments they go through, many of which stem from Stephen's behavior and his suffering. Throughout the movie, their relationship is like a rollercoaster; rising and falling suddenly and often. The movie doesn't shy away from being a bit funny as well. There are moments in the movie that may make someone laugh, and those sections are well placed. The best part of the movie is by far the acting. Eddie Redmayne does amazing as Dr. Stephen Hawking. I feel that there isn't a better fit for the role than him. He portrays Hawking in a manner that isn't offensive, and really stays true to Hawking in real life. Felicity Jones as Jane Hawking is the show stealer. I have always been a huge fan of Felicity Jones, and this movie showcases her brilliant acting skills. Overall, I loved this movie. Although it isn't a science movie like I hoped, I really do like the portrayal of Stephen and Jane's relationship as they struggle with Stephen's condition.… Expand

The emotion feels so real and the story is beautiful, and condensing one man's life story into 2 hours is an incredible achievement. Plus the beautiful cinematography and the way in which themes were protrayed were excellent.
WHAT I DIND'T LIKE: Perhaps this film's weight falls onto the main two cast members a little to much, and the soundtrack was a little cheesy.
VERDICT: One of the best emotional tales of 2014, 'The Theory of Everything,' pays tribute in an amazing way to an amazing man.… Expand

In the interest of fairness, it's always easy to pick on a history or biography film because of inaccuracies that it may have, and in the case of the Theory of Everything, that certainly feels a little bit in some parts, but on the otherIn the interest of fairness, it's always easy to pick on a history or biography film because of inaccuracies that it may have, and in the case of the Theory of Everything, that certainly feels a little bit in some parts, but on the other hand, as an emotional journey into the life of such a brilliant and celebrated person, it is a fascinating study and great inspirational tale for everyone. With a couple of excellent performances, a superb screenplay and cinematography, and a soundtrack that works very effective with the topic and mood of the film, I can definitely say that this movie really in a brief moment in time pulls your heartstrings quite enough to win you over. Generally recommended, although be warned that there is not much science explanation nor expect too much detail in the story if you are a big fan of the professor. Final Verdict: 8.2… Expand

At the start I thought I will only see an annoying film with cosmology formulas ecc... I actually enjoy this film a lot more than the rating I'm giving it, but that's mostly because Eddie Redmayne's performance is so damn good.

Sure, it's formulaic and there's some corny moments here and there, but this is a really emotionallyI actually enjoy this film a lot more than the rating I'm giving it, but that's mostly because Eddie Redmayne's performance is so damn good.

Sure, it's formulaic and there's some corny moments here and there, but this is a really emotionally moving biopic that would make a great double-feature with A Beautiful Mind.

I found this to be a very emotive watch - its quite saddening to see how quickly Dr. Hawking's motor skills deteriorated due to MND. Of course I was aware of him prior to seeing the film and indeed because of that, I was really quiteI found this to be a very emotive watch - its quite saddening to see how quickly Dr. Hawking's motor skills deteriorated due to MND. Of course I was aware of him prior to seeing the film and indeed because of that, I was really quite surprised by how 'normal' he appeared at the very start of the film, when he first started seeing Jane. Both his curiosity to understand the beginnings of the world and his passion for science in general came across clearly, as he seems a very eager student, although he does come across as somewhat naive but then given his relatively young age at the time, this is hardly surprising I suppose.

I found myself feeling very sorry for Jane, given the obvious dire situation she finds herself in, unaware initially that this situation was to become more long-term than had been originally estimated (for want of a better phrase). At one point, relatives (presumably in-laws) of the couple question Jane, effectively questioning her dedication to their relationship, which seemed rather harsh. I was pleased to see to what extent she supported Dr. Hawking, despite the questions and the nay-saying. As far as the films lighting is concerned, I noticed the majority of it was shot in quite a yellow-y hue, with some scenes featuring a light, or mild, blur or softness around the screen. I suppose you could argue that given the serious nature of the film, particularly knowing its very much based on a true story, then you could argue there is a need for it to have a lighter side to it perhaps. It would be quite a grim watch otherwise, I suppose, although it is still a film that you ought to watch with tissues by your side. The film covers numerous issues, as well as Hawking's deterioration with MND, his love of science and desire to prove the history of time and his relationship with Jane, it also covers the thorny/controversial issue of faith (can a man who seems so genuinely keen on and who fully believes in science, have an ability to believe in a God?), which I thought was an interesting issue. Plus, it may challenge your perception of disabled people, their intellectual potential for one.

There are numerous pieces of orchestral or instrumental music played during the film, which give it somewhat of an uplifting 'feel' to it, in appropriate scenes. I thought that generally it was a very thought provoking film and the two main performances were particularly well portrayed, as I couldn't help but feel sorry for Jane (played by Felicity Jones) and also feel the intense frustration Dr. Hawking (played by Eddie Redmayne) clearly had when realising he was to be in such a physically debilitating condition, dependent on others to take care of him from day to day, while wondering about the most complicated scientific questions and issues at the same time. I felt that Dr. Hawking's determination and tenacity really came across well in Redmayne's performance - its hard to precisely explain why but I certainly felt that it did.

There is something of a fairy tale feel or aspect to this film, in both the soft, semi-blurry lighting used at times and there's a scene right at the end whereby the films events are re-shown at speed, which made me think of a fairy tale type narrative somehow. Of course the film is based on a true story, its based on a biography by Jane Hawking herself but there's something somewhat magical about it, which came across well. I can imagine some people may feel this film was, or is, a bit too 'Hollywood', having a bit too much of a positive spin perhaps? if your a complete 100% realist, I could kind of agree up to a point but I thought that the film, while having some lighthearted aspects, didn't hide from the main, difficult subjects present in his life and I did feel that it gave, what I believe to be a roughly realistic insight in to Dr. Hawkings mind at certain times.

I learnt a few things from this film, such as the fact that there's a type of tea called builders tea! in all seriousness though, I found it a quite engrossing watch, if perhaps a little bit sugary sweet but not quite enough so to make me feel like it was a ruined film by any means. It may not suit people who are purely interested in his science genius, as I'd say this is much more romance focussed (I believe Dr. Hawking himself has seen it and commented that he wished more emphasis was given to his scientific theories) but otherwise its a decent film. It may not be for everyone but for what it is, its pretty decent.

I'd recommend this film as its quite enthralling and engrossing, with great performances from the main cast, namely Felicity Jones as Jane and Eddie Redmayne as Dr. Hawking. It covers numerous issues and makes good use of the musical score, although if your purely interested in the story as far as Dr. Hawking's theories are concerned, then you may find this film to be a bit too 'Hollywood-ised' due to its main focus being on the emotional relationship between Jane and himself.… Expand

But it really worked for me. I was moved by come of the extremely emotional and memorable scenes in the move, especially when Stephen and Jane decide to divorce. Bonus points goes towards the British sheen of production value and Eddie Redmayne's very good performance as the late doctor. In retrospect, I think Hawking would've enjoyed this film just fine since it (thankfully) doesn't act as an ego trip.… Expand
