This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Much better then the original for sure. Not only was it more action packed and more funny, it also blended so well. We all knew that Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn would be amazing, the rest of the cast was fantastic also. I like how it threw everyone off in the beginning with what happened. I also loved how the main focus wasn't Harley but, in the moments she did have, they were some of the best scenes in the movie. The cast overall was fantastic. Expand

This movie has everything that Warnesr taken from David Ayer`s movie: original director`s idea. I`m a big fan of James Gunn vision and movie is exactly about it. Mad, funny, with strong charaters and interesting story.

Either Darker, Dark comedy, or more serious toned films. Nothing wrong with the family friendly ones but damn i want something different we have been doing these Comic book movies for a very long time now and im craving something different and The Suicide Squad gave me that. Its more along the lines of a Dark comedy. With a great twist at the start which gave me a good laugh. James Gunn is a huge douchebag but hes a talented director for sure. The Story is pretty straight forward of go on a mission that has a low chance of survival. The Movie made me chuckle quit a bit, I enjoyed the action and darker tone of the movie as its very bloody and violent.

Hopefully we see more R rated Comic Book movies

The team that survives heads to a fictional island to put an end to a secret alien experiment. Director James Gunn has brought the self-aware humorous touches and wacky characterizations that he did so well in the Guardians of the Gallaxy series. This lineup includes Margot Robbie (returning as a delightfully wicked Harley Quinn), Idris Elba, John Cena and Sylvester Stallone (as the mumbling voice of King Shark). There are genuinely amusing moments and lots of great action sequences, with the cartoon violence presented in original and cool ways. This is actually more fun the earlier movie…maybe it just needed “The” to make it work. NOTE: As usual, sit thru the credits for one final gag with a previously “dead” character. Expand

Cena and Elba's dynamic was amazing for alot of the movie and they really did a great job playing off each others character dynamics. Harley Quinn had her own stand-alone role here, with nary a mention of the Joker whatsoever. It really did a great job bringing her character into a more self-sufficient role, as opposed to her relying on the ever looming threat of the Joker to give her a role in the story. There's some meta humor here and there and everyone's role really did a great job, all the way until the end. The main bad guy is a massive in-joke to one of the earliest villains for the Justice League, but it really didnt mesh well with the overall story. Stuff kinda went off the rails in a bad way, towards the end. There wasn't as much cohesion with the script and the characters actions went against their already built up motivations built up through the movie. On its own, the ending could have worked pretty well but just didnt work for me. I'd still highly recommend anyone who is interested go watch this on HBO Max at the very least. Really makes me hopeful for another movie in the series and I definitely couldn't say that after the first one. Expand

It definitely brought the movie, which was rather enjoyable up until that point, down.

Putting that aside, Elba and Cena are fantastic here. King Shark, Ratcatcher 2, and Polka Dot Man were shockingly very enjoyable. The comedy is light but it hits when it needs to. All in all, A decent movie but the ending should have been much shorter than it was.

You've got the extreme gore accounted for, the gut-busting hilarity absolutely in play and a **** soundtrack on board as well -- all very welcomed highlights in many a James Gunn project. However, the added tenderness and pathos this time around (namely in the second half), as well as the implementation of some of the most indelible imagery you'll get in a comic book movie this side of 2019's "Joker" are what untimely make this movie worth the look and then some. Also, this sticks the landing better than most comic book movies nowadays. Cannot tell you how many films -- Marvel, DC or otherwise -- end up limping to the finish line on a rather lackluster third act. This one's might just be the best part of the whole flick. A truly gratifying spectacle to behold from start to finish. Expand

Some only seemed to exists for no other reason than to die as idiotically as possible. I suppose that’s what some people wanted to see, but I was bored. I’m not fifteen years old anymore. Blood spatter and body count doesn’t make a good movie for me. I wanted it to be funny but rather than humor, I got dumbed down dialogue and dick jokes. And there were actual good actors in this movie! Idris Elba, you’re character was Wil Smith’s without any good lines! Peter Capaldi, what was the point of your character? You were the dumbest character in this ridiculous excuse for a plot and you were supposed to be the smart guy!

I’m going to say the worst thing I can about this film. The first Suicide Squad was better. Yeah, really.

This is movie making as decapitation footage, building demolition footage, snuff video footage, bad traffic accident footage--over and over, until the end. One pro critic said, "too much of nothing and not enuf of something better." Gunn's Guardians movie was not like this, why it's a better effort. This Suicide Squad actually is most resonant with Hardcore Henry (2015), simply known as Hardcore in some countries. This was a failed Russian attempt at movie making as decapitation footage, building demolition footage, snuff video footage, bad traffic accident footage--over and over, until the end.
I do agree with the pro critic who says the best parts of SS are the parts with Margot Robbie; and, this points to how the movie as a whole could have gone.

As music progresses over the decades, these tonal changes appear more and more in modern music to give listeners a novel, unexpected experience. Suicide Squad is what happens when you do too many changes too quickly. With the exception of some weak writing here and there, there are some extremely satisfying scenes in this movie. The problem is that the movie identity is stretched and changed so suddenly from scene to scene that it creates what others have described as "Tonal Confusion." There is one scene late in the movie that is supposed to be heartfelt, but it's so out of place it completely missed it's mark for me. This movie is a mad scientist experiment of sewn together pieces that had some truly great moments, but it stumbled enough in it's transitions (with a few jokes that also fell flat) that I walked away somewhat disappointed. Which is a shame, because I really wanted to love this movie. But... there are a few scenes I keep looking back on and wishing they captured the spirit of the movie as a whole. I hope James Gunn sees enough of these kind of reviews to tweak future projects. Gunn displayed some really cool ideas/scenes that unfortunately, in the end, fell short of being the sum of it's parts. Expand

Better action, good humor, lots of blood, easter eggs, good fx.
Watchable by audience of different ages (but not suitable for children...this isn't a classic superheroes movie...there is violence, gore and mature thematic) Enjoyable if you didn't see the first one or even if you didn't read one super-heroes comics (or videogame, or cartoon) in your life.
Good Job.
Batman fans will be a little upset by some character revamp (like King Shark dumbness) but it's not a big deal.
It isn't an oscar movie of course...it feels like a b movie of the 80's...Just relax and end enjoy a good unpretentious entertainment

David Ayer's Suicide Squad was Warner/DC's answer to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, and we all know what that was like.

It's ironic that due to the circumstances, James Gunn ended up directing this film. A sequel/reboot of something that tried to copy his work.

But is The Suicide Squad the wonder that was going to shake up the decaying DC movie universe?
To be honest, it wasn't for me, but the rest will depend on who you ask.

The Suicide Squad is Guardians of the Galaxy Rated R. Just that.
It may be more edgy or more ''provocative'' for some audiences to see blood and **** without moderation, but that in my opinion doesn't help the story at all, nor does it add personality to it.
And considering the weaknesses of the script, Gunn goes so far as to abuse of that resource.

Gunn plays the art of repetition, and adds some moments of comedy to try to lighten the atmosphere when he can't fill it with something more satisfying.
You can see that in Harley's scene with the President, and King Shark in the aquarium.

I don't deny this film is entertaining, although it has plenty of minutes to spare, but in overall delivers, even if it never gets out of the mold.

A lot of people would say that Gunn came to stir the pot, but ultimately, he never risks anything.

How ever the entire story was just bad. REAL bad. Also we get some pretty good backstory and science into why everyone can do what they can do... but then there is Robbie as Harley Quinn who has no powers, no special abilities, she literally just prances around with a gun or blunt object. Her only possible super power is to infect all her enemies to have the aiming skills of a storm trooper. She literally comes face to face with an assault rifle wielding squad in a hallway and not one can land a shot against her while she stands dead center. Again though this isn't Margot's fault, it is the writing. The more I think of this movie the lower the score I want to give it. Expand

Beautiful. Gross. Fun.

Uses its R rating to full effect without becoming gratuitous.

Gunn strikes a good balance between the expectations of modern superhero franchises and the humour of his early Troma days.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Suicide Squad was epic, one of my top 5 favorite movies I've ever seen I loved ever second. James Gunn's direction and writing was impeccable, the stylistic choices like for instance the flowers exploding when Harley killed the guards or the environment being used to make the on scene subtitles that said things like "8 minutes earlier" and the hilarious and dark humor and jokes but stilling having some more serious and touching moments everything he did with this movie was perfection but it was no surprise cause he is one of the most talented film makers out there. The performances were exceptional, one of the best ensembles I've ever seen, especially from Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Daniela Melchior, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, and Viola Davis also though their performances were lesser or short-lived Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Michael Rooker, and Mayling Ng gave great performances too. The action sequences and fight choreography were awesome. The visual effects were spectacular especially Starro. The costumes were outstanding. The makeup and hairstyling was superb. Also the music was terrific. An A+ movie. Expand

Despite the critical failure of the 2016’s Suicide Squad, the tenth instalment in DC Extended Universe featured the return of Suicide Squad consisting of new team members along with few returning characters from the first movie as a standalone sequel under the helm of well-known director, James Gunn, who have previously directed two Guardians of the Galaxy movies before his firing from Marvel Studios and eventual reinstatement. The Suicide Squad is currently available in cinemas and HBO Max at the same.

After the events of Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey, Amanda Waller (Davis) assemble Task Force X aka Suicide Squad once again and this time, the squad is split into two teams which Team One is led by Colonel Rick Flag while Team Two is led by Robert DuBois/Bloodsport (Elba). Their mission is to destroy a Nazi-era laboratory called Jotunheim which holds a secret experimentation called Project Starfish in Corto Maltese.

During the mission, Team One suffer heavy casualties which all team members are kill in action except Rick Flag and Harley Quinn (Robbie), which the latter get capture by Corto Maltese soldiers. Meanwhile, Team Two manage to sneak into the country undetected and later found Rick Flag, who was rescued by Sol Soria, leader of the freedom fighters to take down Corto Maltese government. Not wanting to leave Harley behind as captive, Team Two devise a plan to rescue her before they can continue their mission.

Comparing this movie to the first one, this movie is a huge improvement although for the benefit of the doubt, the theatrical cut of the first movie is not exactly what director, David Ayer, intended. For one, the editing of this movie is better and not messy like the first movie. Not only the editing is better, the pacing now flows better from the beginning to the end. James Gunn have done a great job in redeeming Suicide Squad with his directing style and his writing. It really fits his style of directing and the humours he utilised are even better and not forced like the first movie. Since the movie is R rated, James Gunn took a great advantage of the rating to make the movie even more gory and violent than 2020’s Birds of Prey.

The cast have done an amazing performance in this movie. Among the casts are Joel Kinnaman who played Rick Flag, have done better job in portraying the character in this movie. He has a good character developement unlike in the first movie where he is more of a generic soldier character. As usual, Margot Robbie is still great at portraying Harley Quinn just like in the first movie and Birds of Prey. Let’s not forget about John Cena. Not only he gave an amazing performance as Peacemaker, his acting skills is so much better now and he definitely improved a lot. David Dastmalchian who played Polka-Dot Man, have done a great job in the movie especially in providing comic relief moments in the movie and turn the character from being a joke to being a badass. King Shark is great as well in providing comic relief moments and his lines are pretty funny especially the lines is done by Slyvester Stallone and credits goes to him on the way he delivered it. Although her screentime is lesser in this movie, Viola Davis still manage to play her character well like how she have done in the first movie.

Although not really a big disappointment, I felt that many characters especially the ones in Team One got killed off way too early in the movie without any character development. Not even a little development at all. Still, I have to give James Gunn some credits for about not to get too attach to the characters. Thanks to Gunn’s direction, this movie really live up to its title and being worthy to the name of Suicide Squad. As I mentioned earlier, this movie is a standalone sequel which means you do not have to watch the first movie to understand this one as there are very little connection to the first one. Last but not least, stay back for post credits scene.

Scenes have good framing and the inventive title cards give the movie the feeling of chapters similar to how a comic book run would be laid out. Some people will not appreciate the gore and violence but damn if it doesn't look glorious. The action can feel very staged at times but didn't pull me out of the movie. People complain about the pacing but even in its slow moments it never feels dull. The main cast are some of the better fleshed out and unique characters to grace the DCEU, reminding me of James Gunn's past work with the Guardians series. King Shark steals the show, as well as a suprisingly great performance from John Cena. Somehow James Gunn made a huge cgi starfish into a simpathetic villain. (that last line holds so much weight) Overall a stylish romp that doesn't always hit with the humour but I'll be damned if it wasn't enjoyable. Expand

Sigh. It's good.
Sure, it's the kind of murder porn you'd expect from an R-rated film by a director who got his start at Troma Entertainment.
The thing is, it's just well made. The characters are well developed and you might actually care what happens to them. The story isn't deep, but a great framework for the film. The action is definitely exciting and the humor had me actually LOL at least once.
I don't like Gunn personally, but I can't deny this is a well made film by a man with serious film making skills.
I can find little to nitpick. It's not Casablanca or Citizen Kane, so it's not a 10, but it is excellent.
I still think everyone should try not to let them get your money, but catch this if you can. A fun ride (if you can handle _REALLY_ icky gore).

Even though I am a fan of James Gunn and this movie is leagues better than Snyderverse it was still overstuffed with too much pointless meandering going on. It needed a better edit, maybe shaving off about 30 minutes would make the film flow better.

The Good:

The characters are great everyone gets to do a little bit of something and watching them bounce off each other was the highlight of the film.

Will Smith not returning was a bit sad and I love that Idris Alba was not in as a replacement, he has his own personality, and if Will ever returns they will have a great vibe.

M. Robbie is now the definitive live-action Harley little by little getting more into the role over every film she has starred in, this film truly made me want to see this Harley with a Joker sadly they blew their load on that already.

Rat Catcher 2, Polka dot man had slightly more humanizing roles even though they do not have a lot of dialogue. Cena is a great entertainer as always and he borderlines on cringe but does not go fully into that territory. King Shark, Groot and Hulk in a bar is a film I wanna see make it happen please !!!

The premise is great and true to a suicide squad story nothing is what it seems and the plot unfolds and changes in unexpected ways and villains die a lot. Although the final main antagonist will not be much of a surprise for most DC animated fans, the movie is aimed at the masses and works well the way it is written. On a side note this was a great first live screen appearance of the final antagonist.

The Bad:

Every individual element of the film works well and is fun as a whole, it still does not justify the above 2-hour runtime. The opening act and the climax are perfect and I would not change anything, everything was tight and streamlined. Not too sure what happened in the middle section.

Harley's side plot was fun but way too long for the way the plotline is resolved. Not just Harley plotline but a lot can be edited out of the whole second act and still keep and resolve every story beat we have in the final cut that was streamed. I do not think this is a film-specific issue but rather the 'it's on streaming service so we can just keep everything in' mentality to allow films to pointlessly meander instead of editing it for a more smoother experience.

Final Words;

This movie was a better watch than 2016, but DC as a whole has evolved since then shows like Doom Patrol and Superman and Lois and the excellent DC animations prove that DC is capable of giving us great stuff.

This was a great and fun watch, although editing about 30 minutes from it would have made it an amazing and fun watch. Collapse.

There are some logical errors here and there and sometimes the story takes a back seat but I excuse it a little bit because the information and jokes they present more than make up for the slow pacing most of the time. All of the characters are interesting, even the ones that only show up for 5-10 minutes. They may not get a ton of development but their interactions with other characters is great and their dialogue is snappy and funny. The characters that get a lot of development and time on screen are all great. While there are definitely characters I like more than others, I really liked all of them with Harley Quinn, King Shark, Polka Dot Man, and Ratcatcher 2 being standouts. My only minor nitpick is that I do wish Peter Capaldi’s Thinker was in the movie more but that’s mostly because I adore Capaldi. All of the performances are great even from John Cena which I was kinda surprised about. The humor hits pretty hard a majority of the time. I found myself laughing out loud at points because the film knows how to use its comedy properly. The use of gore is incredibly over the top and I think it makes the film better. It helps it stand out from other hard R superhero gore fest films like Joker and Deadpool because of Gunn’s directorial style. The soundtrack here works a million times better than the original film. It works with the scenes and adds to the comedy and tone. The visual effects are pretty great most of the time with some awkward moments here and there and the cinematography was surprisingly great. You could definitely tear apart this movies flaws in terms of story but it doesn’t bother me that much. This film is too much fun to hate. I would definitely recommend checking this out as soon as you can. Expand

James Gunn and Suicide Squad? It has to fit and it does! Phenomenally good and funny action entertainment with a very charmingly selected team or teams?

The beginning is brilliant and I was literally overwhelmed by the consequences of the film. Sometimes a brutality stands out that I didn't expect at all, and yet the film always remains funny and is told in a well-structured way.
It's not just crazy psychos who are now shooting everything away: the characters have been given soul and depth and the troupe grows on you as the film progresses.

The whole thing is paired with a great comic look feeling, which James Gunn has implemented very strongly. I always found the transitions to scenes in particular to be cool and creative. But exactly the same when instead of blood squirting flowers just sprout.

I wouldn't have expected the way the antagonists were dealt with either, but it makes the film totally unpredictable and well worth seeing. The final showdown is then the icing on the cake. All of the characters have their moments, and John Cena made me think of Homelander all the time.

There are also really crazy looking characters, especially the Weazel.

Absolute recommendation from me.

First, Zack Snyder is the executive producer of this movie. Second, Snyder, Ayer and Gunn are good friends. Dawn of the Dead, was written by James Gunn himself. And third, James Gunn supports the Snyderverse. He himself said he wants to see the Ayer Cut. And this is Suicide Squad. It's always going to be a different team. So both can coexist. With all that said, let's move on to the actual review.
The thing I like about James Gunn's movies is that he doesn't take anything seriously. This is the reason why we get to see many weird things happening which we won't normally see in any other director's movies. There are many such instances in this movie itself, most particularly in the beginning where TDK uses his detachable arms to slap the enemy soldiers. There are also King Shark, whom Gunn manages to make terrifying and cute at the same time, there's Harley Quinn of course, who imagines weird things and then acts accordingly, and there's Bloodsport who acts all tough but gets scared of a rat.
The comic timing is what makes this movie so good. All the characters have something unique to offer, and all of them are making the scene more exciting. I really liked that part where Harley Quinn comes out of the building and sees everyone coming in to save her. There are also other scenes where I couldn't hold my laughter, like King Shark raising his arm and saying "Hand!" (for that matter all King Shark scenes were great). Many deaths come up unexpected, and the movie gives us enough reasons to care. So it's always a flinching moment whenever someone dies.
My favourite character in this movie, which must have become obvious by now, is King Shark. Whenever he is on the scene we know something good is going to happen. Even when he is not doing anything he just stands there adorably. I also like Peacemaker. His dialogues are great, and every time he speaks it's something funny. Bloodshot also has some really great action scenes along with him. Ratcatcher II and Harley Quinn were also hilarious when needed. The team that comes in the start really sets the mood and I really hope they do something great with Weasel. He looked interesting.
I have only read one Suicide Squad comic (Rebirth) and watched three movies (the 2016 one, this and Hell To Pay). So I won't call myself an expert on the franchise. But seeing how Kill the Justice League is also seeming to be in similar tone, I believe Suicide Squad is supposed to be this hilarious rollercoaster. And this movie absolutely stands by it. I'd really hope we get to see at least like, ten Suicide Squad movies and shows in this decade.

I was honestly worried that it was going to be like the 2016 suicide squad, but man James Gunn did some amazing work on this film

Awfully disappointing as I used to love James Gunn's movies. This is written perhaps too quickly: the humor often falls flat, actor performances are very poor (apart for Dastmalchian), the story is unconsequential and pointless. VisuallyAwfully disappointing as I used to love James Gunn's movies. This is written perhaps too quickly: the humor often falls flat, actor performances are very poor (apart for Dastmalchian), the story is unconsequential and pointless. Visually distastful, action scenes are boring. The redundance of "chapters" to help give some sort of structure ends up being quite ridiculous. The location of 'Corto Maltese' is badly depicted both visually and in writing. Behind the adolescent humor, the emotional scenes never work and all the character arks of "surviving" heroes are unoriginal. I genuinely do not understand the hype of this movie. Please revisit SUPER by J. Gunn which is far better. Expand

Just a meh movie. Effects weren't great, no great performances, and Cena is terrible. Outside of Elba nothing notable about it.

What a great year for DC, released some of their best movies this year with this and the Snyder cut. This is James Gunn's magnum opus, way better than those overrated Guardians movies imo. James Gunn is at his best when he's rated R.

Wow, this movie was so much better than the first Suicide Squad, by all accounts.

Starts off strong and just drags. The violence becomes boring and it runs out of ideas early on

First movie I paid to see this year. I give 10 when entertained, laugh & come away not feeling like I wasted money on expensive popcorn! Plus, I wasn't angry that my entertainment had been polluted with social issues. This was just for fun. IFirst movie I paid to see this year.
