With a lot of money, and complete creative control, James Gunn made one of the best comic book movies of all times.

You've got the extreme gore accounted for, the gut-busting hilarity absolutely in play and a **** soundtrack on board as well -- all very welcomed highlights in many a James Gunn project. However, the added tenderness and pathos this time around (namely in the second half), as well as the implementation of some of the most indelible imagery you'll get in a comic book movie this side of 2019's "Joker" are what untimely make this movie worth the look and then some. Also, this sticks the landing better than most comic book movies nowadays. Cannot tell you how many films -- Marvel, DC or otherwise -- end up limping to the finish line on a rather lackluster third act. This one's might just be the best part of the whole flick. A truly gratifying spectacle to behold from start to finish. Expand

I hope Warner/DC will try this formula by picking talented crew and not second-guessing them, then the DCEU will have a better chance (and an alternative approach) against the MCU.
I am worried that the pandemic will make The Suicide Squad look like a lesser success than 2016's Suicide Squad. That first movie is NOT the way to make a movie. But money talks loudest in Hollywood. We'll have to wait and see. And maybe a simultaneous theatrical and streaming release is not the best approach. F9 seems to be doing great because Universal released theatrically in June 25, then on streaming on July 30, over a month later. By August, worldwide box office is $643 million. Finally, there's a factor Warner Bros. could not have predicted, the Delta variant will likely depress theatrical screenings. F9 and A Quiet Place 2 both didn't have to cope with the variant.

The movie is worth the watcg for Daniela Melchior alone.. Its a good story of villans coming togeather, with great action. This version of Harley Quin was as cringe as ever, but it dosent distract from how good the rest of the film is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well....this movie was insane, I mean really insane, but I thoroughly enjoyed this film. This is more of a comparison than a review, but I will kinda of review it. I'm gonna start with what I think this film did better than David Ayer's Suicide Squad and then say what I think David Ayer's Suicide Squad did better than James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

What I think it did better than David Ayer's film:
The Cinematography and the action sequences: By the looks of it the action sequences were done more practically than in Ayer's version, takes were longer and more of the action was visible than Ayer's. The action sequences were beautifully shot, the camera was always following the action so you wouldn't miss much.
The Visual Effects & Costume Design: Surprisingly the visual effects in this film was phenomenal, I wasn't expecting it to look as good as it did, especially the CGI character of King Shark, the detail on his skin was mind-blowingly good, he really look real, yes I know he really isn't a regular shark given that he's walking around like a human but that's how good it was to me, plus the big baddie at the end Starro, once you were able to see what it looked like I was stunned at how well it blended in the live action elements, like King Shark the detail on Starro was insanely good. Now the costumes are exactly as I was expecting, when you have characters like Polka Dot Man, TDK, Javelin, and Peacemaker who are some the lesser known DC villain's who you consider C, D, or even lower grade villains of course their costumes are going to be absolutely ridiculous, and they totally are, but they looked amazing, some of them were vibrant with color as given so much detail that they looked awesome. Bloodsport and Harley Quinn's costumes were the standouts for me, I thought Bloodsports mask was freaking awesome, I got a Xenomorph vibe from it which was cool as hell, and Harley's costume felt like it was ripped from the comic pages itself, especially the two tone color scheme.
Some of the Lead and "Some of the" Supporting Cast: Idris Elba's Bloodsport and John Cena's Peacemaker were real standout among this ridiculously massive and star packed cast, especially how funny the two of them were especially when the two were trying to kill people in a more creative way as a way to prove who's better at killing. Daniela Melchior and David Dastmalchian as Ratcatcher 2 and Polka Dot Man were the emotional core of the film, Gunn really did a great job getting you to really feel for these characters and their backstories. Viola Davis as expected did a fantastic job as Amanda Waller, and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag made a HUGE improvement from the previous film, he wasn't as wooden as he was before.
Gunn's Signature Style: This film is very reminiscent of Gunn's Style of film from before he did Guardians of the Galaxy, they were screwed up and gory as hell, the fact that Warner Bros let him use that for a comic book movie is actually refreshing in the massive market of comic movies and shows, every now and then you have to change things up to keep it interesting and I'm happy he could let loose with this movie.

Now I really didn't like David Ayer's Suicide Squad but I'll admit there are some things I think it did a little better:
The Soundtrack: I know it's weird to start this off with that, but to be honest the music in Ayer's version is superior by quite a margin, I listen to a lot it's music still 5 years later, I mean come on, Skrillex, Lil Wayne, Twenty One Pilots, War, CCR, Rolling Stones, Wiz Khalifa, Imagine Dragons, Queen, Eminem! So many artists, it was a little disappointing but I'll admit that a good chunk of the budget for Gunn's version went to that ridiculously massive cast, so this a bit of nit pick.
Pacing, The off-putting Animal Cruelty, and Unnecessary Character Deaths: Ok, before I start, the whole Animal Cruelty thing, it's a nitpick also, i just didn't really understand why it needed to in the film, but this is coming from James Gunn's twisted mind, so I guess i should've expected it, but it just a tad too much. Now the pacing was a little slow when it came to the 2nd act of Gunn's version, but there was a lot of character development that needed to happen, but Ayer's version flowed better in my honest opinion given it was shorter. Finally, them character deaths, when they killed Slipknot in Ayer's version it sucked but it needed to happen, but when Boomerang, Flagg, and Polka Dot Man were killed off, it really didn't make much sense to me, especially Boomerang and Polka Dot Man.
Overall, I loved The Suicide Squad, it was an insanely fun and hilarious film packed to the brim with some awesome bloody and gorey action sequences some surprisingly outstanding VFX and a great cast with some awesome on screen chemistry was damn near perfect, but that second act slowed it a tad too much and some of the characters should of have more screen time, but James Gunn delivers it in style.

The major issue was that Peacemaker didn't smash the item (trying to stay spoiler free) and then the plot continue on based on that fact. The smaller issue was the gore. I don't have a problem with gore, but like many things in life, moderation and timing is key. Gunn seemed to use it more freely which watered it down and made it less "cool." Uses its R rating to full effect without becoming gratuitous.

Gunn strikes a good balance between the expectations of modern superhero franchises and the humour of his early Troma days.

Despite the critical failure of the 2016’s Suicide Squad, the tenth instalment in DC Extended Universe featured the return of Suicide Squad consisting of new team members along with few returning characters from the first movie as a standalone sequel under the helm of well-known director, James Gunn, who have previously directed two Guardians of the Galaxy movies before his firing from Marvel Studios and eventual reinstatement. The Suicide Squad is currently available in cinemas and HBO Max at the same.

After the events of Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey, Amanda Waller (Davis) assemble Task Force X aka Suicide Squad once again and this time, the squad is split into two teams which Team One is led by Colonel Rick Flag while Team Two is led by Robert DuBois/Bloodsport (Elba). Their mission is to destroy a Nazi-era laboratory called Jotunheim which holds a secret experimentation called Project Starfish in Corto Maltese.

During the mission, Team One suffer heavy casualties which all team members are kill in action except Rick Flag and Harley Quinn (Robbie), which the latter get capture by Corto Maltese soldiers. Meanwhile, Team Two manage to sneak into the country undetected and later found Rick Flag, who was rescued by Sol Soria, leader of the freedom fighters to take down Corto Maltese government. Not wanting to leave Harley behind as captive, Team Two devise a plan to rescue her before they can continue their mission.

Comparing this movie to the first one, this movie is a huge improvement although for the benefit of the doubt, the theatrical cut of the first movie is not exactly what director, David Ayer, intended. For one, the editing of this movie is better and not messy like the first movie. Not only the editing is better, the pacing now flows better from the beginning to the end. James Gunn have done a great job in redeeming Suicide Squad with his directing style and his writing. It really fits his style of directing and the humours he utilised are even better and not forced like the first movie. Since the movie is R rated, James Gunn took a great advantage of the rating to make the movie even more gory and violent than 2020’s Birds of Prey.

The cast have done an amazing performance in this movie. Among the casts are Joel Kinnaman who played Rick Flag, have done better job in portraying the character in this movie. He has a good character developement unlike in the first movie where he is more of a generic soldier character. As usual, Margot Robbie is still great at portraying Harley Quinn just like in the first movie and Birds of Prey. Let’s not forget about John Cena. Not only he gave an amazing performance as Peacemaker, his acting skills is so much better now and he definitely improved a lot. David Dastmalchian who played Polka-Dot Man, have done a great job in the movie especially in providing comic relief moments in the movie and turn the character from being a joke to being a badass. King Shark is great as well in providing comic relief moments and his lines are pretty funny especially the lines is done by Slyvester Stallone and credits goes to him on the way he delivered it. Although her screentime is lesser in this movie, Viola Davis still manage to play her character well like how she have done in the first movie.

Although not really a big disappointment, I felt that many characters especially the ones in Team One got killed off way too early in the movie without any character development. Not even a little development at all. Still, I have to give James Gunn some credits for about not to get too attach to the characters. Thanks to Gunn’s direction, this movie really live up to its title and being worthy to the name of Suicide Squad. As I mentioned earlier, this movie is a standalone sequel which means you do not have to watch the first movie to understand this one as there are very little connection to the first one. Last but not least, stay back for post credits scene.

Scenes have good framing and the inventive title cards give the movie the feeling of chapters similar to how a comic book run would be laid out. Some people will not appreciate the gore and violence but damn if it doesn't look glorious. The action can feel very staged at times but didn't pull me out of the movie. People complain about the pacing but even in its slow moments it never feels dull. The main cast are some of the better fleshed out and unique characters to grace the DCEU, reminding me of James Gunn's past work with the Guardians series. King Shark steals the show, as well as a suprisingly great performance from John Cena. Somehow James Gunn made a huge cgi starfish into a simpathetic villain. (that last line holds so much weight) Overall a stylish romp that doesn't always hit with the humour but I'll be damned if it wasn't enjoyable. Expand

The Suicide Squad is a sequel/semi-reboot to the critically panned Suicide Squad (2016). The 2016 movie tried to replicate James Gunn's Guardian of the Galaxy but failed miserably. So for the second Suicide Squad movie, why not just hiredThe Suicide Squad is a sequel/semi-reboot to the critically panned Suicide Squad (2016). The 2016 movie tried to replicate James Gunn's Guardian of the Galaxy but failed miserably. So for the second Suicide Squad movie, why not just hired James Gunn himself? The premise is "The government sends the most dangerous supervillains in the world -- Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and others -- to the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Armed with high-tech weapons, they trek through the dangerous jungle on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Col. Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave". So is this a failed mission or is it one to remember?

Firstly, The Suicide Squad is an absolute blast to watch as it contains all of James Gunn's iconic charm from GoTG. There are the characters with their vibrant and distinct personalities, even for characters of limited screen time. The visuals are stylistic, from war looking jungles to colourful fever dreams that are contrasting but mesh well together. The pounding and awesome soundtrack returns but are utilized more effectively here than the 2016 version. The action scenes range from cool to even downright bonkers which is just so entertaining. Of course, The Suicide Squad is also very hilarious with a lot of laughs.

One thing in The Suicide Squad that is different from GoTG is the hard R Rating which James embraces. The action scenes are ultra-violent in their blood and gore with the destruction feeling very impactful. James Gunn also uses the R rating to allow for some dark humour which just really works. The characters in The Suicide Squad are mostly composed of B-tier villains but James manages to make us take some of them relatively seriously by giving them some depth. The biggest surprises have got to be Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Polka dot man (David Dastmalchian) and Peacemaker (John Cena). Ratcatcher 2 is the heart of this film as she is the one with the kindest nature in the team and her powers of controlling rats are made more interesting and cooler thanks to James Gunn. Polka dot man sounds incredibly stupid but is made very sympathetic in a weird way. Peacemaker is a douche but I do love his rivalry with Bloodsport (Idris Elba).

On that note, the actors all do an excellent job. Margot Robbie was already great as Harley but she has embodied the character perfectly to the point I can't see any other actress as Harley. Idris Elba is still charming as the gruff guy and while it is a role he played many times before, he is still great at it. John Cena isn't an actor I am fond of but he puts a lot more acting chops in The Suicide Squad which was surprising to see. The others are also great and it is very clear that they are having a real fun time in the role including returning actors from Suicide Squad (2016). The story of The Suicide Squad is very simple but engaging thanks to the characters and the unexpected twist and turns. It also explores some interesting themes including corrupt governments. The Suicide Squad is advertised as anyone can die and there are some surprising deaths for sure.

However, due to the huge amount of characters and cast, some get killed off without really getting to do anything significant which is a shame. There are also a lot of shots where it is just a lot of grey and dullness to it. We got grey buildings, grey rooms and grey offices which are just not that interesting to look at. There is also one plot thread that was disappointing which is Bloodsport and his relationship with his daughter. His relationship with his daughter is very sour but his daughter being threatened by Waller is the reason for him joining the squad. Yet we don't get a proper resolution to this apart from one line that kind of resolves it but in a very unsatisfying way. Additionally, Bloodsport's character arc just sort of happens. I wish they gave him more scenes or flashbacks to build it up instead of just one conversation with Ratcatcher 2.

Overall, The Suicide Squad is everything Suicide Squad (2016) should've been. It's fun, joyful and off the walls crazy in the most entertaining of ways. James Gunn and WB succeed in delivering a successful DCEU entry and this makes me very hopeful for this cinematic universe.

Been so excited for this movie for a while and it did not disappoint. Easily my favourite film in the DCEU. Almost everything about it was great in my opinion, and I just had a total blast the entire time. First off the characters were great here, far better than the ones in the first movie. It’s hard to choose a favourite because I felt that they all offered a ton to the movie. I’d probably say Ratcatcher was one of the main highlights for me, she was definitely the heart of the movie and I did feel for her character, she was just so sweet and innocent. Idris Elba as Bloodsport was great as the leader of the group, Rick Flag was far better than last time, King Shark was hilarious, John Cena as Peacemaker was awesome, and so on. Again I enjoyed everyone here. The action was phenomenal as well. The movie uses the R rating so well with tons of gruesome moments) and there’s a lot of badass scenes (one of the highlights for me was with Harley Quinn) who I forgot to mention was really good here, still debating if it’s my favourite interpretation of her in the DCEU though. I also loved the style of the movie. The way it would transition between scenes with text pop ups was really smart, and I loved the way they integrated them into the scenery. Cinematography wise it was great as well. Loved the look of everything, and I found the CGI to have no weak spots, unlike a lot of the other DCEU films. If there was one negative I had, it would be the humour. There’s a lot of funny stuff here, but for James Gunn, I thought there would have been more laugh out loud moments. So comparing this to the GOTG movies, I’d say they’re funnier to me (definitely smarter with their humour.) Overall I loved this film and I can’t wait to see it a second time, which I’ll be sure to do in IMAX again. Definitely my favourite DCEU film and probably one of my favourite CMB movies of all time. (With a second viewing, I could easily see this going up to a 10) I have a small second negative which is kind of a spoiler, so don’t read further, just know that I loved this! Expand

Sure, it's the kind of murder porn you'd expect from an R-rated film by a director who got his start at Troma Entertainment.
The thing is, it's just well made. The characters are well developed and you might actually care what happens to them. The story isn't deep, but a great framework for the film. The action is definitely exciting and the humor had me actually LOL at least once.
I don't like Gunn personally, but I can't deny this is a well made film by a man with serious film making skills.
I can find little to nitpick. It's not Casablanca or Citizen Kane, so it's not a 10, but it is excellent.
I still think everyone should try not to let them get your money, but catch this if you can. A fun ride (if you can handle _REALLY_ icky gore).

This movie is fun from the beginning, throws huge curveballs, and doesn't bore the socks out of you in the last 20 minutes of the movie like so many superhero movies do. WB execs have FINALLY learned to butt out & just let creatives like James Gunn who love and understand the source material do their thing.

Imagine if David Ayer had been given that freedom back in 2016?

James Gunn and Suicide Squad? It has to fit and it does! Phenomenally good and funny action entertainment with a very charmingly selected team or teams?

The beginning is brilliant and I was literally overwhelmed by the consequences of the film. Sometimes a brutality stands out that I didn't expect at all, and yet the film always remains funny and is told in a well-structured way.
It's not just crazy psychos who are now shooting everything away: the characters have been given soul and depth and the troupe grows on you as the film progresses.

The whole thing is paired with a great comic look feeling, which James Gunn has implemented very strongly. I always found the transitions to scenes in particular to be cool and creative. But exactly the same when instead of blood squirting flowers just sprout.

I wouldn't have expected the way the antagonists were dealt with either, but it makes the film totally unpredictable and well worth seeing. The final showdown is then the icing on the cake. All of the characters have their moments, and John Cena made me think of Homelander all the time.

There are also really crazy looking characters, especially the Weazel.

Absolute recommendation from me.

The 10th movie in the DCEU and Sequel to 2016 Suicide Squad by WB (Not David Ayer)

Some people will class this as a reboot when in actual fact it isnt, it is very much a sequel, still references the first movie, still carries on the arcs of the original characters while also bringing in new one into task force x and going on a new mission (Just like in the comics)

As a snyder fan I found this movie fun to watch, R rated the way it should be, the squad still act like a bunch of crazed misfits while trying to save the world.

That being said after seeing James Gunn untouched vision I really want to see David Ayer's true movie of HIS Suicide Squad before WB butchered it with 10 week reshoot, much like the infamous WB/Whedon Josstice League we finally got the REAL, TRUE, ACTUAL movie by Snyder.....Zack Snyder's Justice League, and I want the same for Suicide Squad 2016......#ReleaseTheAyerCut #RestoreTheSnyderverse

James Gunns Suicide Squad is a zany gore fest that tells a enjoyable story with some of DC most obscure villains as well as some more popular ones such as Harley Quin and Shark king.

For me at least the humour landed, the action was mostly good with one scene being the exception and the archs and character development for Polkadot Man, Bloodsport and rat catcher 2 all being satisfying and Silvester Stallones King Shark served as a comedic relief that never felt out of place and the dynamic between characters was particularly good.

The film has far more stakes then most movies in the genre with characters dying left and right which makes it all the more enjoyable. It's a good film all around as long as you're okay with a film being a little quirky and crazy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To be honest I walked into this movie ready to ridicule it and have a fun time just laughing at how bad it is. Instead I got major whip lash from the unexpected and extremely pleasant surprise of an equally hilarious, visually fun and experimental, heartfelt, and politically dark and audacious movie. The comedy is fresh and realistic, there is no good guys or bad guys, just a mess of morally ambiguous characters and the realistic twist of what is truly evil in this world....I enjoyed the shade thrown at governments. Especially the hypocrisy of American imperialism. The movie didn't shy away from making that a huge important turn in plot. Besides that the characters are treated as individuals and the sappy moments that I would normally find cheesy and irritating were treated with such caricaturic fun that.....it was effective. It didn't take itself too seriously and that let the movie drive home its message about the complexity of humans. Not your average hero nor villain movie. Very **** fun and definitely worth the watch and rarely does a sequel beat the original but as the original was so horrid....this sequel demolished it and can stand on its own as an independent movie lol I gave it a 9 instead of a 10 only bc i reserve my 10s and bc that legend weasel deserved way more screen time. Whimsical. **** Bloody. Hysterical. Did I mention the gore? The Suicide Squad is exactly what happens when a studio lets a creative do their thing with little to no interference. The Suicide Squad is exactly what happens when a studio lets a creative do their thing with little to no interference. James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is not going to be for everyone - and you should know that up front. It’s very niche and 100% Gunn, so if you’re a fan of his previous work and projects I think you’ll like it. If you’re not, good luck, cause it’s a lot.

The story is fun. It makes sense and what’s great is every single character (mostly) gets their chance to shine. Personally, I fell in love with Polka Dot Man, but every single character was absolutely brilliant.

It’s fun. And it’s also actually a good movie, unlike the disastrous, studio meddled 2016 film. If you’re a fan of DC, Gunn, and/or superheroes, this is most definitely up your alley, but if you’re not a “nerd” than I would approach this film with caution. 2nd best film of 2021 IMO so far.

This is probably the most "gunnish" James Gunn film.
Inspirations from 70s war adventure flicks and body horror Troma movies.
The thing is - Gunn not only uses all of it to create great entertaining film, because you see Gunn is kind of artist.
He puts a lot of love, depth and sensitivity into his characters,
script here is like perfect.
Action and actor directing is on very high level too, problem begins with the pacing.
Structurally this movie is not referring into acts and it's coming with idea of something like chapters, which work perfect in final result, but creates problems with pacing.
Instead of this film is really, really close to perfection.
Greatest blockbuster of 2021?
For now, surely yeah.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a really amazing, funny movie. The opening was great, the whole **** team dies (except for Harley) to tell the viewer: "We're done with the old Suicide Squad ****." It was nice to see how Captain Boomerang kicked the bucket. However, it was clear to see that they copied Deadpool 2 with that. The film is just a hilarious, gory mess. Like Deadpool, but only the good parts. The jokes and the action are top notch, and the story is ridiculously stupid, yet never takes itself seriously. It often feels retro, like a Cold War movie, but the retro style is stunning. The Latin American sets are beautiful. And Starro, the giant starfish, is exactly the right villain for such a goofy story. My only complaints are that the movie is a little too long, and they never let King Shark go completly savage. Maybe in the sequel. Expand

Nothing wrong with the family friendly ones but damn i want something different we have been doing these Comic book movies for a very long time now and im craving something different and The Suicide Squad gave me that. Its more along the lines of a Dark comedy. With a great twist at the start which gave me a good laugh. James Gunn is a huge douchebag but hes a talented director for sure. The Story is pretty straight forward of go on a mission that has a low chance of survival. The Movie made me chuckle quit a bit, I enjoyed the action and darker tone of the movie as its very bloody and violent.

The team that survives heads to a fictional island to put an end to a secret alien experiment. Director James Gunn has brought the self-aware humorous touches and wacky characterizations that he did so well in the Guardians of the Gallaxy series. This lineup includes Margot Robbie (returning as a delightfully wicked Harley Quinn), Idris Elba, John Cena and Sylvester Stallone (as the mumbling voice of King Shark). There are genuinely amusing moments and lots of great action sequences, with the cartoon violence presented in original and cool ways. This is actually more fun the earlier movie…maybe it just needed “The” to make it work. NOTE: As usual, sit thru the credits for one final gag with a previously “dead” character. Expand

Marvel/Disney or one of their countless imitators still put out enough to tickle my fancy from time to time, but I'm finding it more and more difficult to get truly excited about whatever big event is on its way to theaters (or streaming) next, when the majority of it is either another by the numbers cape-and-costume flick or a remake/revival of some long-dormant nostalgia property that probably would have been better off left in the past. Heck, even the stuff not connected to a grand cinematic universe is often guilty of following the exact same formula with the hopes of achieving a little taste of the box office domination regularly experienced by the comic book characters in their tights and spandex, and that distinctive MCU style of shoehorning comedy into everything has been slowly creeping its way into so much as the bloody horror genre as of late.

That's one area where the DCEU has kind of impressed me. Yeah, the results have been mixed at best to put it lightly, but at the very least Warner Bros. and DC Films have shown a willingness to attempt unique things with most of the various properties they've added to it so far. The Suicide Squad standing as a fine example of that.

In an effort to make up for the absolute disaster that was 2016's Suicide Squad movie, James Gunn was reportedly given almost complete freedom to come up with his own vision for the project and put it onscreen as he saw fit. The end result isn't something that radically breaks the mold, but rather works well enough within the confines of it to put some one of a kind spins on the established set of familiar elements and walk away with an identity all its own.

Gunn is obviously extremely educated in the various obscure nooks and crannies of DC Comics long history, and liberally pulls from lesser known corners of it to deliver a bevy of names and plot devices only the most hardcore of nerds will recognize and that nobody would have ever guessed would make their way to the screen at some point. Ditching the ghetto Hot Topic costume designs of its predecessor and its kind of, sort of spin-off Birds of Prey, the appearances of the villains here are often very faithful to, or a creative new take on, their comic book counterparts. Which naturally leads to a cast of faces, as well as powers, that honestly look blatantly odd next to each other, gleefully reveling in the absurd diversity of uniting such awide array of source material, and I'm 100% here for it.

The expected blend of action and humor gets a little extra flavor due to the R-rating. All the naughty words and gore manage to differentiate themselves from what you'd find in Deadpool thanks to the singular personality and attention to detail of the director. So every gag and bloodbath compliments the surprisingly great story well, while giving each member of the team a real, significant sense of contribution Guardians of the Galaxy-style. I can't praise the narrative enough for really tackling the supremely messed up nature of Task Force X and getting me invested in the political side of a superhuman conflict in a way I haven't since The Winter Soldier. For all the laughs and goofs, this is a legitimately dark tale with a lot of bodies left behind against their will and a conclusion that's just a touch tragic since nobody will ever find out the true reason behind why these prisoners were sent basically to die.

While this does nothing to grant us any insight into what's next for the DCEU or if its owners actually have any idea what they're doing with it at all, it does however finally give fans the Suicide Squad adaptation they deserve, while managing to standout from the pack by the virtue of its individualistic flourishes. Despite my overall fatigue and somewhat indifference with the whole superhero craze lately, I'd be legitimately interested in and hyped for a third outing. Particularly if James Gunn's name is attached to it again. Which is saying quite a bit when you consider how much of the MCU and its far more proven track record I still have to play catch-up on because of how willing I've been to let it pass me by at present.

You get The Suicide Squad, the film that the original was meant to be. In my opinion, it is irreverent, unpredictable and a fun all around movie, a through and through R rated film that gave Marvel a run for its money. Nevertheless, its divisive reaction shows that WB's schizophrenic handling of its DCEU flicks need to be improved. A 200 million cult classic. Expand

Cena and Elba's dynamic was amazing for alot of the movie and they really did a great job playing off each others character dynamics. Harley Quinn had her own stand-alone role here, with nary a mention of the Joker whatsoever. It really did a great job bringing her character into a more self-sufficient role, as opposed to her relying on the ever looming threat of the Joker to give her a role in the story. There's some meta humor here and there and everyone's role really did a great job, all the way until the end. The main bad guy is a massive in-joke to one of the earliest villains for the Justice League, but it really didnt mesh well with the overall story. Stuff kinda went off the rails in a bad way, towards the end. There wasn't as much cohesion with the script and the characters actions went against their already built up motivations built up through the movie. On its own, the ending could have worked pretty well but just didnt work for me. I'd still highly recommend anyone who is interested go watch this on HBO Max at the very least. Really makes me hopeful for another movie in the series and I definitely couldn't say that after the first one. Expand

This Suicide Squad movie actually felt like a movie and not something Frankensteined together by a studio.

The movie is darkly humorous, but still serious enough for you to care about the plot and the characters. Even villains unknown to those that might not be familiar who don't read comics, such as myself, were brought alive in an interesting way. Especially Polka Dot Man and Ratcatcher 2 stood out, but all the characters and actors did a great job.

Would definitely like another Suicide Squad movie in this vein if James Gunn is behind it, doesn't even have to be this squad. Can just be another squad of anti-heroes and villain protagonist as long as it's half this interesting.

With “The Suicide Squad “, James Gunn took what the previous movies in the franchise were trying to do and he finally succeeded at it. Sort of a hard R "Guardians of the Galaxy".

The 2nd Suicide Squad film really should have been the first, as it perfectly merges humour and action. Although there are far too many ideas, it mostly works as the team does its best to shoot its way out of every scenario.

First of all, this movie is HILARIOUS and I have no freaking idea where to start. Not to mention that this is the goriest DC film that matches the quality how the suicide squad is portrayed in the comics and Gunn has done justice. Secondly, the narrative structure with its characters are heartfelt in which us as the audience can easily care for. (Expect a lot of memes on Polkadot Man and you'll see how relevant he is to us and King Shark lol) Almost everyone from the original hot topic Ayer directed PG13 Suicide Squad are back and this sequel-boot has brought in justice done right. Let's not forget to mention that James Gunn's Harley Quinn is the most definitive Harley Quinn we've got and Margot Robbie killed it again since her recent appearance in her Birds of Prey spinoff. The cast is great, the production design is convincingly sharp, and the overall presentation in terms of narrative is just icing on the cake. If I were you, I may see this in theaters before the Delta Variant gets even worse because this is the best DC film we've got. Expand

Anything ranging from safe and boring or technically well-made but disposable, at best. Because sometimes following the same formula will eventually wear fin and more risk taking needs to happen. And here we have ‘The Suicide Squad’, the soft reboot to the 2016 film, but this time directed by Gunn himself, where he delivers a highly entertaining movie that is bursting with creativity and ultra-violence. James Gunn once again shakes up the superhero formula with a slick style.

I just can't believe we got something like this. It's 2 hours and 12 minutes long, but it's always on the move. It’s bonkers from start till finish, and I enjoyed every minute of it. This is probably one of the best shot movies in the DCU. The soundtrack is great as well and used effectively. The action scenes were insane and made the overall experience one of the most fun I had at the cinema in a long time. A massive improvement over the 2016 film, AKA ‘the studio cut’, is that the movie doesn’t look ugly and isn’t chopped together by trailer editors. The movie is vibrant in colours that made it look pleasing to the eye. The structure at times is messy, and yet strangely well-paced, as there’s a lot going on.

Did I mention the movie is very gory? It’s cartoonish violence, or what people call "adult superhero movie", so it's not for kiddies or for the faint of heart. You would probably guess that not everybody on the team is going to make it to the end credits, so deaths are to be expected, but how certain characters “bite the dust” are so unexpectedly gruesome and brutal, it took me by surprise each time. The marketing for the movie was right, don’t get too attached. As I said before, James Gunn had complete creative control over the movie, and he doesn’t hold back on what he wrote and show on screen. But then again, it's a movie, it's not real, the actors who die on screen are fine in real life...I think.

All the cast members have equal amount of time to shine, and you like these super villains this time around, as each character had wonderful chemistry with each other. John Cena plays Peacemaker, who can be best described as a “douchebag version of Captain America”. An extreme patriot who will do the most horrific things for liberty. John Cena excels in the deadpan line delivery for comedic effect, but surprisingly enough, worked well in the serious moments. Looking forward to the spin-off show ‘Peacemaker’. Margot Robbie once again nails the role of the chaotic but gleeful Harley Quinn. While the character isn’t front and centre this time around, more of a side character, but whenever the character is on screen, it’s instantly memorable. Idris Elba plays Bloodsport, a contract killer who’s doing time in prison after failing to kill Superman with a kryptonite bullet, while also dealing with family issues, especially with his daughter. While the character may sound like Will Smith’s Deadshot from the 2016 film, but trust me, the execution here is much stronger. This is by far Elba’s best work in a while. Charismatic and a strong leading presence.

Polka Dot Man, played by character actor David Dastmalchian, a socially awkward, weird, and lame sounding character that has some serious mummy issues, which has a funny running visual gag throughout. However, because of Gunn’s writing and Dastmalchian's performance, the character is more than a joke, but a unique character to watch.

Ratcatcher 2, played wonderfully by Daniela Melchior, who brought so much warmth and heart to the film. I loved how they tied in her tragic backstory into the finale, as it honestly made me cry. And let’s not forget the king himself, King Shark, voiced by Sylvester Stallone. He stole every scene he’s in, because he’s so adorable and has such kind eyes, but when he’s hungry, he can be a killing machine. The rest of the supporting cast, even in the smaller roles, still manage to stand out amidst all the chaos. I liked Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag a lot more this time around, because the actor was given more to work with in terms of good material. Viola Davis is brilliant as the cold and ruthless Amanda Waller. And Peter Capaldi is always a pleasure to see. Also, I like the character of Weasel, who I can describe as a unholy offspring of Shin Godzilla and Rocket Racoon. He may not be beautiful to look at, but he's beautiful to me. Like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, the movie has a lot of heart and I like how they took certain characters, who on page sound stupid and ridiculous but are handled with such love and depth, while also being self-aware of its own characterization.

You can literally watch this as a standalone movie and you won’t be lost or confused, as you don’t need to watch 22 other movies to understand it. This is by far the strongest entry in this jumbled mess of a cinematic universe.

Fun, completely wacky and yet very well constructed. Action scenes and violence disproportionately to the silly standard that has been placed lately and totally consistent with what the film proposes. A few lackluster moments but totally passable.

Much better that the first one.
Better action, good humor, lots of blood, easter eggs, good fx.
Watchable by audience of different ages (but not suitable for children...this isn't a classic superheroes movie...there is violence, gore and mature thematic) Enjoyable if you didn't see the first one or even if you didn't read one super-heroes comics (or videogame, or cartoon) in your life.
Good Job.
Batman fans will be a little upset by some character revamp (like King Shark dumbness) but it's not a big deal.
It isn't an oscar movie of course...it feels like a b movie of the 80's...Just relax and end enjoy a good unpretentious entertainment

Surprisingly I did not expect much from Ratcatcher 2 but i found her character really well done. For me the star of the movie was obviously Bloodsport and Peacemaker but the way Idris fit in so well between action and comedy showed how good of an actor he is especially with the scene involving him and Viola Davis.

Not too sure how some people are complaining about it not having a plot when their mission was explained maybe 3 or 4 times throughout the movie with chapter titles.

Id give this movie a 7.5 had some solid action some fun jokes may not work for everybody but it definitely did for me.
