Saw the movie yesterday, I had mixed feelings about it, overall I find this movie empty.

The plot is very deep and requires effort to understand, with character development layered in so thinly you might think it isn't there.

10/10 for delivering everything I could not capture on my trip to Yellowstone.… Expand

But there was too much just watching horrible **** happen to the main guy. Also some unbelievable plot points. Riding a horse off a cliff, but saved by a pine tree? Come on, the guy shoulda been dead halfway through. Lost points for halfhearted mystical bull**** as well.… Expand

Beautiful scenery, Leo is wonderful, but 2 1/2 hours was 2 hours too long for me. Artsy film but not entertaining to me. On the bright side I leveled up on angry birds and caught a nap during the film.

This film gives me a lot of perplexity. The shots are rather anonymous and do not leave me much. The shot in the scene of Hugh Glass being attacked by the bear, for example, doesn't give me that sense of fear and anguish it should convey. TheThis film gives me a lot of perplexity. Expectations have a lot to do with perceptions, and movies are no exception. My expectations were high, based on Metacritic reviews and all the Golden Globe awards. My expectations were high, based on Metacritic reviews and all the Golden Globe awards. First the kudos: yes, a stunningly realistic performance by De Caprio. He will probably win the Oscar. But while physically challenging, his character wasn't deep nor difficult to portray. And the bear attack: incredibly realistic. If you watched the infamous bear attack in the German zoo, they learned well. But this 2.5 hour movie was 1 hour too long. The ending so very predictable from the outset, even though the real ending between Glass and Fitzpatrick was absolutely the opposite of what we saw: see Hugh Glass on Wikipedia. Finally, lovely scenery. But, trust me, this movie was boring with a capital B.… Expand

The most overrated film of the year. Slow, overlong, lifeless--except when Tom Hardy is on the screen, and then it's electric. About halfway through, I wondered why I was supposed to care about this guy, beside the lightly-handled (andThe most overrated film of the year. About halfway through, I wondered why I was supposed to care about this guy, beside the lightly-handled (and beautifully shot) annihilation of the native village he lived (?) in with his very pretty (in white man's terms) wife at some point, and his, frankly, weird relationship with his son--I felt no love between them at all, didn't believe they were even related. I guess because his family was murdered we're supposed to immediately feel for him. Except that familial relationship was never established, simply hinted at in dreams and visions, and when he barked at his son to shut up.

I actually felt for Fitzgerald, Tom Hardy's character, because we knew something about him, we knew what he wanted, we knew what his job was, what his contract was for, we know he was getting screwed no matter what. And Tom Hardy imbued his character with amazing depth in just how his expression changed when people would talk to him; he was a desperate man in desparate times. Which I suppose the Glass character was too, but his journey just started becoming totally improbable--I thought of the old silent film serial, remade in the 30s, called The Perils of Pauline, and thought this could be called The Perils of Paul . . . and yes, I know that's not his name. It became a series of coincidences that started to feel writerly and not organic. He flew off a cliff after everything else and was like, let me gut this horse!

And how did the French guys not see the sweat lodge as they were killing Glass's Pawnee bison tartare eating friend? And why didn't anybody wear hats? And how could he not have been hypothermic after being in that cold cold river for so long? And how come he couldn't place the bear right away? He could smell smoke in the air for a fire that had been put out hours ago but he couldn't hear that there was a bear behind him, as he looked all over the place?

A half an hour could have easily been cut. Easily, but none of Tom Hardy. Overrated pseudo-art.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay, you riddle me this...How does one man go through all of this "based on true events", and still live? Unless he was born on a planet far, far away? Spoiler Alert! Do not read this, unless you have actually seen the movie. First off, I felt bad about the cubs, the Pawnee girl, really bad about the son, really, bad about the Pawnee friend who helped Glass, and really, really bad about the horse )okay, really bad for the mama bear too). Now then, the real question is how? How can a human being attacked by a bear, suffer what appears to be a broken leg/ankle/foot/ uh, punctured lung, ripped off skin, nearly ripped out throat, and then live after going down rapids, wade ashore in this broken state, and then walk/limp away? Even after all of that water rapid ride (that would normally destroy a canoe, kill the average person, Glass still has the ability to have the stone and flint to make a fire AND no additional physical added problems. The flint and stone weren't lost while he was tossed around like clothes in a washing machine? And even though he was total submerged in water (hypothermia didn't play any part in this movie, it was ignored), the animal skins he was wearing, miraculously dried perfectly. The topper (one of far too many in this movie) is when he is riding a horse away from his attackers and they soar off a cliff. The horse goes off one way (lucky? for Glass) and drops to his bloody death nearby Glass. The horse is a total bloodied mess after the fall from the cliff. But "Super Glassman" drops anywhere from 150 to 300 feet, falls on his face in the snow pack, and walks away without any additional damage to his already damaged body (not one additional scratch or broken...anything). Amazing! Then, he strips down, makes a bed in the gutted out horse, when he wakes, he is amazingly "cleaned up", puts his clothes back on to go on his way. What planet was Glass from originally? Does he know Kal-el? Do they "do lunch"? It was almost too much to repeatedly see L.C. ala Glass with those baby blue eyes and the crystal clear whites of his eyes looking like he just got out of bed at a four star hotel. There's more, but it's not worth mentioning. This based on true facts script/story must have been about a number of men and put into one man's life. That's the only way it could possibly have happened. There was far too much ("you have to be kidding" under the audiences breath throughout the movie) to make this movie real. The last shot was the final slap in the face. Picture this, one more shot of L.C. looking into the lens with nice clear, rested blue eyes, and then fade to black. Always a good way to end a movie by having the main character starring into the lens. That makes us all feel so warm and fuzzy. If the movie gets any awards, it should only be for sound and photography. Set dressing looses here because of the well patterned snow pack, the trails that were far to tread on where nearly driven snow should have existed at that time, the non-existing branches in the tree and on the ground from that fall both the horse and "body" did in the one mentioned scene above. Do we see a sequel in the near future? The Revenant II, Return of The Revenant, The Revenge of the Revenant, The Revenant Prequel... (at least we have to hope it will not be picked up as a series) ugh!… Expand

This is one of those movies where you watch it and at the end you're like 'why does everyone like this movie?' The movie was too long and I mean the movie really didn't even need to be made. There are far better survival movies out there like the edge ect or better revenge movies like the count of monte cristo etc. The dialogue was hard to hear/understand for me from the loud background nature or just the mumbling hard accent of the soldiers. I mean over half of the movie is mute with just dicaprio trying to survive and it just was not interesting or entertaining. I gave the movie the benefit of the doubt becauese dicaprio is an amazing actor but this movie fell flat for me. If you really want to see it just wait for it to arrive on redbox because it is not worth wasting a night out on.… Expand

The Revenant does a lot of good things. It has great scenery and some intense action scenes; I especially like the grizzly bear scene. However, that's all I can really say good about this movie. The characters didn't really seem interesting, and the main character just seemed stupid. I can understand trying to take out a grizzly bear, but after getting back to commendable help, he proceeds to throw himself off of a cliff. I know the common argument is that he was being chased, but it still seemed like a dumb idea to make your main character injure himself over and over and OVER again. Plus the story really didn't seem engaging. The classic "get revenge for my dead son/wife" shtick didn't move me into the film. Also, this movie is SLOW. It's a few plot points, then heavy breathing while trying to survive, rinse and repeat. I didn't think it was a bad film, it just seemed boring to me. If you like this film, that's great; good for you, i'm sure many others will agree with you. I just didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

This movie was super boring. Dude needs an editor like mad. Good fight scene at the end though. Maybe don't show so much snow and trees. We get it, it's cold.
Tom Hardy was great in it! Too bad everything else will put you to sleep.

By the time the movie ended, I developed a few wrinkles myself along with Leonardo. What starts off as a gripping and grueling arrow versus gun powerball set in the 17th century amidst the beautiful Rockies, quickly turns into a quiet boring documentary about the flora, fauna and the lifestyle of ancient winter survivors. Interspersed somewhere there is a rather juvenile story-line of father avenging the son's death. Usually it is the other way around, but DiCaprio is too old to play someone's son now. Anyway, it's day, then night, then day, then night. Then flesh. Then blood. Then day. Then night. Terrific nat-geo level cinematography though. In the end, the director takes on a challenge of how to gross out the already irritated and tired audience. Well, guess how? More flesh. More blood. Finally the ordeal ends. DiCaprio deserves an Oscar, but not for this movie. Just like Rahman deserved an Oscar for Roja rather than Jai-Ho.… Expand

The Revenant's story is flat and difficult to accept as realistic or mythic. It may be magic realism but that doesn't make this particular story an effective narrative- its strengths lie in the visual trip it takes you on. However, what story it does have ruins that visual trip, unlike in the best works of Malick or Tarkovsky, where the natural imagery and the dreaminess better compliment the narrative, and vice-versa.

It's not realistic, despite being 'based' on a true story, because it keeps the main character alive past all biological possibility. (For those who would quibble with the 'true story' factor, the actual story of Hugh Glass doesn't have the main character defy death ten times over. Furthermore it's a 'true story' of a mountain man doing something extraordinary. This usually means it's a tall tale.)

And if Glass' death-defiance is meant to subtly show the main character as a kind of undead or supernatural being (or ambiguously or liminally so), that idea is not developed interestingly. Even worse, if Glass' endurance and death-defiance are supernatural, then his determination is irrelevant and the theme seems to be: 'family love powers magic revenge'. That's an F for story to me. I suppose that there could be some sort of grand allegorical meaning, but since the story doesn't work on the literal level, that potential is irrelevant to me.

Although others may see it differently, the highest score I can give a narrative film with a zero for story is a 3 out of 10. I find it sadly amusing that after Birdman, with its examination of the perils of ego, Inarritu follows with an egomaniacal stunt of his own.… Expand

This movie has beautiful landscapes and effects. It is clear that a lot of effort was put in it. Suspension of disbelief is challenged as the protagonist survives what should be impossible. Ridiculous scenes that will make you laugh are all over the place, just as purposeless violence. This movie has zero creativity put on it. Again, DiCaprio wasn't the problem here, but he was a victim of a poorly written movie. No matter how good the actors were, the story was so bad and cliche I simply couldn't stop thinking how I don't care what happens to these people.
Overall, I wish I could get the time I spent watching this movie back.… Expand

Blood all over people's faces as they tear raw flesh out of bison and eat it, or eat fish alive as they wriggle in their hands; flesh being torn off human bones up close in detail, skulls being blown off. A woman being dragged into the woods and raped. A hot burning stick being applied sizzling to a neck wound. This is the single most violent movie I have ever seen - Tarantino is a walk in the park compared to this. Revenant is easily far and away the longest stretch of up close detailed granular violence of any movie in history. You would have to be either completely anesthetized or a sociopath not to find this film totally and completely disgusting.

The story - is there a story? - barely. The story is as simple revenge story. Twenty years ago it would have starred Mel Gibson. But it would not have dragged on for over two and a half hours. I wanted to leave halfway through but I stayed because I was with a friend.

I should add that the beating DiCaprio takes gets to the point where it is just so unbelievable, at one point, where he falls off a cliff but an evergreen tree breaks his fall, it was so much like Wile E. Coyote, that the audience burst out laughing. It wasn't supposed to be funny. It was just so ridiculous.

From now on I'm going to be much more careful about what I see in theaters. I feel that Revenant not only wasted 4 hours of my life (door to door) but took something from me. I left feeling abused, broken, dispirited. And for what? This movie had no true drama. No true characterization of anyone, not even of Dicaprio's character, and it had no point.

Yes some of the cinematography was nice. That's why I give it a 3. Otherwise it would get a zero… Expand

Leonardo DiCaprio did a good job here but that's not enough to save this film. The films plot can be summarised as, "nature beats up Leonardo DiCaprio for two hours while he's near death after he gets mauled by an unrealistic looking CGI bear". This is pretty much the only key event in the film and the rest is just a long drawn out torture scene as we watch poor Leo grimace and strain at the camera for hours. It's almost painful to watch and not because you're sympathising with the character, but because you're not interested in watching someone languish in pain for yet another run-on scene. Honestly, I would question the emotional stability of those who enjoy this, as I feel it would take some pretty entrenched sadism to get pleasure out of watching this.… Expand

Well, most has been said already about this movie. Most importantly it just takes forever. It begins quite nicely, it grabs you but as soon as "the painful part" starts the whole thing goes down the litter. You will then have to watch a mixWell, most has been said already about this movie. You will then have to watch a mix of DiCaprio grunting in pain and some nice scenery with a not much more exciting vision here and an indeed much more exciting scene containing Tom Hardy there. Really, Tom Hardy made the movie. If it wasn't for him I probably wouldn't have watched it till the end which I still somewhat regret because it was so damn long.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not against long movies at all. Just a few days before I watched The Revenant I tried The Hateful Eight which is pretty much as long as The Revenant and in that movie the time flew by. I didn't even look at the clock for once.
What I especially do not understand is how DiCaprio got an Oscar for _that_. Why for this compilation of grunting-sounds but not his role in the Wolf of Wallstreet or Django Unchained? ONLY if all the stuff he did in the movie was done without any kind of special-effects as if for example he really pushed himself into a horse cadaver of some sort I would agree and say he might get his Oscar for the effort. But the acting? You might say the role didn't give him enough room to shine as much as in the aforementioned movies but, well, that's bad luck then. If any of the actors in that movie Tom Hardy should've gotten an Oscar for that.… Expand

It has good production value, but I didn't find the plot nor characters to be very engaging. It's a long movie, all of which I found boring. None of it seemed believable and I had no investment in the characters. Just not my preference.

This is a trash movie for trash people. It's basically the Grey set in the past. I literally fell asleep for a few seconds before someone woke me up. "Oh hey, we need a rough survival man who makes it against all odds and actually ignores wounds that would get infections that would kill him dead without antibiotics" "Emma Watson isn't answering her phone" "Oh get Leonardo DiCaprio then" this movie was so boring and so shallow when it seemed like it would end but kept going I actually groaned. So predictable and so fake. Oh, look at us, look at all the blood and emotionless deaths we're so deep and realistic and Oscar worthy! (Meaningless Spoiler)Oh wow, I was NOT expecting that the good guy would catch the bad guy! What a twist! Oh, and they had a knife fight when both their guns were knocked away, what an original and exciting idea!

I don't understand all the hype for this movie. The plot in this movie is horrible, and so does the ending. There isn't any character development to be seen. First the good news. The cinematography is stunning - stark, bold, lumnescent. It owns the screen in a way I seldom see. Now for the rest. Based on a true story covers a multitude of sins. Based on a true story covers a multitude of sins. To keep it short and sweet, the plot is ludicrous and unbelievable and totally dependent on one outlandish coincidence after another. The character development is foolish, people made out of cardboard. All this leads to a climax out of a pulpy comic book. My one question to tye screenwriter. In this vast and frigid, white expanse of emptiness, how is it that all of the principals inevitably camped within a few hundred yards of each other and came across each other without fail for any of the action scenes? Gve me a break. If you can't see this on the wide screen it deserves, don't bother.… Expand

I really disliked this movie.

Stylistically, the long sweeping shots of scenic vistas without dialog are aesthetically pleasing, but style cannot substitute for lack of story. By the 90-minute mark, I was done with it. Sadly, it went on for another hour.

This flaw in pacing was not helped by the absolutely terrible score. It's clear there was a deliberate choice to go minimalistic, but it just didn't work. If you're going to make a two and-a-half hour movie that's anchored by long shots without dialog, the least you can do is help the audience feel like things are moving along by putting some excitement into the music.

The way it's directed and edited, every single character for whom the audience starts to feel sympathy soon gets killed, and always through no fault of their own. It's as if the director delights in repeated fatalistic displays of the world's moral failings. After the first hour, I was so depressed I wanted to shoot myself.

And in the end, what is it about? Getting from point A to point B without getting killed in order to exact revenge? The payoff was in no way worth the investment of time, emotion and boredom. If I had seen this in the theater, I would have walked out.

Also, if you're an animal lover, do yourself a favor and do *not* see this movie. No fewer than five large mammals are killed on screen, and none in self-defense.

Because I enjoyed some of the cinematography and performances, I'll give it a 2/10. Otherwise, it would have been a 1.… Expand

At 156 minutes, "The Revenant" is unwatchable, so it wasn't. After an hour, instead skipped to watch a minute every three or four through to the last twenty minutes which encapsulates the final conflict between John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy) and Leonardo DiCaprio (Hugh Glass). Nothing was missed for in between is Glass grimacing left then right.

There is a harrowing, savage bear attack leading to Glass hanging to life by a slender thread. Oddly, all that came to mind is how the effects were accomplished. That goes to a lack of empathy for protagonist Glass.

This is a film of unquestioned artistic merit. Though some gush about the cinematography, it is merely serviceable. It's not the cinematography that's beautiful, it's the wilderness. All that's required of the cinematographer in this situation is to set the frame and F-stop. The actors most likely kissed pavement back in civilization after shooting this demanding film. They did well under the circumstances, particularly DiCaprio. The villain is the director and the unreachable allegory he wrote on the script pages.

In "Jodorowsky's Dune," the titular director made a few memorable Seventies' films. When pitching "Dune," the studios requested a standard length film - 120 minutes (not viable for a film from a story this complex). But Jodorowsky wondered why it couldn't be ten hours or twenty hours. He was clueless why the studios weren't funding him. The doc is in part the story of a delusional, out-of-control ego. The viewer may wish to slap his face. Enter Alejandro González Iñárritu who also appears to have an ego of the same dimensions.

God bless the artists, but not those who trade their expression for self aggrandizement. Not only is "The Revenant" a vanity project, it is Oscar bait.

Awards should be given to those brave enough to sit through this slog. It is a simple story raised to the power of crashing bore. "The Revenant" is nearly incomprehensible, and filled with spiritual mumbo-jumbo even Iñárritu most likely can't explain.

See this if you relish masochism. It's a bet this film will bomb. Maybe that will awaken Iñárritu. He's a genius. He just doesn't know how to connect with an audience. He certainly doesn't here.… Expand

It's brutal... long and boring. Leo's worst movie since "Man with the Iron Mask." The effects don't blend in with how the film is shown. I would say go see Star Wars instead. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As an avid outdoorsman, The Revenant looked interesting but was a major disappointment. The consistent illogical, unbelievable inaccuracies throughout the movie made it too distracting to enjoy the movie. I don't know if directors are clueless about reality or just don't care. Ok, it is a movie and artistic license is understood, but when dramatic effects trumps reality too often, it loses my interest.

In the first Indian attack scene, Indians are pillaging through dead traders next to those still fighting. I would think they would value their lives more and wait until the fighting ceases. But this is minor.

After being attacked by a bear laying down, he can't move a finger to attack his son's killer, but a few hours later, is able to crawl across the ground on his arms. The body just doesn't heal that quickly.

And then there's the old jump in an ice cold river in the middle of winter and crawl out, build a fire and warm-up. People can last in ice cold water at most 10 minutes or go into a coma and sometimes survive. I've been in freezing rivers twice and when you get out you're frozen. If you have clothes on, it is very difficult to swim, and Hugh Glass had a bear skin on, which would have been so heavy in the water he would barely be able to move or sink. And when he got out his clothes would freeze and stiffen so he could barely move. Been there, done that. It would take forever to dry the clothes in the cold with just a fire.

Then his Indian friend builds a shelter with tree branches, strips him naked and attempts to heal his skin w/ smoke and dried grass. Glass spends a winter night under a few pine boughs without a stitch on. Really? I've spent a night under these shelters in the winter and they are freezing. It's sold cold it is nearly impossible to sleep with a down sleeping bag, wool hat and socks. He would have been dead or near it, and not come out like he it was a B&B. And the Indian friend is killed within yards of the shelter, but the murders didn't look inside as Glass was untouched. I guess director Gonzales Inarritu didn't think of that...

And then Glass crawls inside a dead horse to stay warm, stolen from Star Wars Tauntan scene. Whether that would have worked is doubtful. But he crawls in the bloody carcass and the next day he's clean as a whistle in front of the doctor? When did he take a shower?

Ok, last one. After his final battle with the villain, indians just happen to arrive out of nowhere in the middle of nowhere.

Gonzalez Inarritu shows almost now creativity. DiCaprio doesn't deserve an award for grunting and crawling around. Where's the acting in that? Do yourself a favor and find the orginial Jeremiah Johnson (1972) in which Robert Redford deserves an award. Gonzales Inarritu is now Sydney Pollack.… Expand

A guy who loses everything, but his drive for revenge keeps him alive until he gets his revenge.

Pros
-Leonardo DiCaprio acting is really good.
- The photography is really good.

Cons
- The story is nothing new
- There is no realism in this movie what so over, Leonardo DiCaprios character seems like an immortal auto healing god. And everyone else extremely fragile. Except of course the guy he is chasing. I’m going in more detail here. This a movie about a man that after surviving the native attack, gets attack by bear, and bear beats the living **** out of him, he in fact scars him in the neck, and after all the fight the bear end up on top of him. But he doesn’t die. He then sees how someone kills his son and just can scream, but hours after they leave him to die, he crawls out of the hole he was in, and after two days is walking. But not just that he NEVER takes any form of antibiotic, or takes time to clean his injuries, he jumps off a cliff with a horse, survives an assault with like 30 Indians on horse on his back in an open area. Sleeps naked inside a horse. Eats only raw food. Swims inside a near frozen river with waterfalls fully clothed. And then gets out roll over and don´t die from hypothermia and of course has no problem swimming while they are shooting arrows at him. No matter what happens after he sleeps he will always wake up.

Not even Bear Grills make it look that easy. And in a film where you are going to be sited for 2 and half hours with something like this recurring you start losing interest really soon, because he could get another wound, but it doesn’t matter he will just keep going.

- This movie has no humanity, morality or good. No matter where you search all the characters that are human get killed really fast. The movie is the story of how different groups never really found peace, they just worked the whole movie to ruin each other’s life.
- There is no character development what so ever.
- The movie has no ending message, no moral, nothing is just a blood bath

So here is my advice if you want to see it. Put a mark of 30 minutes, if you are able to pass all the stuff and not be bothered by it, you’ll enjoy it. If you really care about this stuff then save yourself the time. I want to add I’m Mexican, and since the director is Mexican I really wanted to like it that why I kept going. It was a mistake. And finally I see a lot of users praising how real the movie is, and the realism of it. So for the users believing in that my advice is a bit less Hollywood, because clearly you have no idea what you are talking about.… Expand

Continuity disastrous - wounds on face kept opening, healing, moving around. But is is only a game after all.
A very silly movie, unless you are a gamer, in which case you'll love i when it is released.… Expand

Completely unbelievable after the bear mauling. And I was rooting for the bear. Shooting the bear after the first mauling is incredibly stupid as well. Even that doesn't strain credibility as much as the repeated immersions in icy water which he somehow survives or his amazing ability to keep his head out of water while wrapped in sodden clothing and bearskin. I've done winter camping and I just don't buy it - get that wet and particularly in that state of injury and you're toast - or ice cubes really. Then it's just one cliche' and deus ex machina after another. Is there ANY survival cliche' that's not thrown in here? Miraculous buffalo and a miraculous Indian. Miraculous rescued native maiden who will ALMOST keep him for sartin' death later. A mumbling evil Texan. A wide eyed boy. And the acting ... the Oscar was most definitely a career Oscar. Let's not forget the cinematography which is in love with itself to the point of pain. How many shots up through the trees with sighing wind can you take? My limit is considerably less than I got here. The splitting open of the horse to stay warm - followed by the dressing in clothing that has to be either frozen or sodden depending on how much of a thaw we're supposed to believe that really is. This guy has to have an interior nuclear reactor to thaw himself out again. Yes, after the bear mauling I became increasingly bored and angry. One of the longest and most disappointing experiences I've had in some time.… Expand

Beautifully filmed, boring as hell. Thank God I tivoed the movie. It cost me nothing other than 2+ hours of my life. Fortunately, the movie required little attention be paid and I enjoyed a book. Truly one of the most boring movies I've ever seen. About ten minutes of plot surrounded by two and a half hours of needless flashbacks and useless shots of scenery. I really didn't like this movie. And I seriously considered walking out of the theatre. It's really hard to enjoy a movie that is slow to pick up, but it's even harder to enjoy a movie when there's almost no dialogue. I found the Revenant to be way over done on cliche,s but i did enjoy seeing the french joining in on the carnage by hanging the Indian. Extremely boring. Even with good actor play I just couldn't wait for it to stop. Beautiful nature shots are nice but not when they constantly cut the movie in pieces. 40 minutes after the beginning I was seriously thinking to leave.

And every time he is almost in over his head (!) he miraculously heals just that little bit more to keep going. Oh-Oh - he is in aWow. What movie have you all been watching?? Boring. Oh-Oh - he is in a life-threatening situation! How can he survive? Being buried can't stop him. Being beared can't stop him. Being bared can't stop him. Whatta guy!!

Nine-tenths of the movie is a dead man walking in the snow. Some plot, huh? And can you contrive an ending? Clearly, yes.....

To compare this to Birdman is noxious. Everyone talks about the great trials the entire crew endured to make this movie. Well, news time. Great trials, and being cold, and having to go through three hours of makeup before filming in no way make a great movie. The Revenant is proof of that. Unfortunately, it is also likely to be proof of the onanism of Hollywood.

The only one who deserves any recognition at all for this tedious and repetitious movie is the bear. At least he had the decency to die when he should have. This movie, on the other hand, took 156 minutes to die, and that was 155 minutes too long.… Expand

Le coup du grizzly (incroyablement bien fait) met tout par terre mais pas notre petit Rambo en herbe, le petit Di Caprio ! qui se prend l'ours sur la tronche et bien plus encore... mais ça doit être un petit Terminator le trappeur, c'est pour ça ! même qu'après s'être fait boulotter par la bête, il suffit simplement de le recoudre à l'arrache pendant qu'il se vide de son sang, tranquille.

Ensuite, il doit recharger ses batteries... et il repart à l'assaut, frais comme un gardon. Vers sa cible, car il veut se venger... eh oui, un méchant trappeur n'a pas été gentil, il doit être puni. Mais tout ça, ce Koh Lanta d'opérette, ça prend du temps, car tout est très lent dans ce film trop long. Et un Terminator qui boîte, ça va forcément moins vite.

Avec ça (comme si ça ne suffisait pas), le film nous sert sa dose de vivre ensemble et de mixité ; il rajoute également une charge contre les Blancs, méchants Blancs contre gentils Amérindiens sauf Léonardo le gentil Blanc gentil avec les Amérindiens ; du classique quoi.

Très regrettable ce salmigondis, car on aurait pu avoir mieux, beaucoup mieux et en moins con sans que ça dure des plombes.… Expand

Revenant may have been filmed well, but the overall movie is just an OK experience.......

The plot of the movie is appear to a little more than cliche........its more like Lieutenant Dunbar meet Robinson Crusoe, but this time Crusoe is stuck on snow crested forest and cliffs rather than an island.........and a familiar and cliche desire of vengeance drives our main character to progress very slowly through a rather simple and shallow plot.

Another thing that really bothered me about this movie is that at one point the main character was almost dead, his flesh brutally torn by a feral animal and he was on death bed but then he heals on his own and with in few days he is back on horse back and even survived a fall from a cliff and a fall through a waterfall during the period he was supposed to be recuperating........the pace at which Leonardo's character recovers from his wounds is very unrealistic even in a fantasy, this is one of the factors that blew this movie for me.

Its a very slow moving movie and there isn't much that happens in this movie, for the most part Leonardo's acting is comprised of moans and groans rather than actual dialogue delivery........he did a well enough job but I wouldn't give him an Oscar for this........… Expand

Posebno sam razočaran jer je Iñárritu jedan od mojih omiljenih režisera.

Ko nije gledao film, a želi da ga pogleda neka ne čita dalje, jer nemam nameru da spojlujem stvar, ali naprosto moram da iznesem nekoliko zdravorazumskih zapažanja,
zbog kojih mislim da je film uvreda intelektu.

Elem, priča bi bila odlična da nije preterivanja, koja su za moje pare upropastile film.
Hugh Glass je traper kojeg grupa njegovih ortaka ostave da umre nakon navodno "smrtonosnih" povreda koje mu je zadala ženka grizlija (u nameri da zaštiti potomstvo).
E, tu je zapravo potpuna groteska.
Taj Hugh Glass (koga u ovom filmu odlično glumi Di Caprio) je zaista preživeo napad grizlija, ali nipošto na način kako je to prikazano u ovom filmu.
Ovde ga je medved izujedao 30-ak puta, igrao se njime kao mačka s mišom, pa se ovaj nekako dokopao puščerine i ranio zver, koja je opet nasrnula na njega,
ovaj put je on izbode nožem 2-3 puta, te se zajedno otkotrljaju niz neku padinu 30-ak metara u dolinu, ali na načina da se na zlosrećnog Glassa, stropošta medvedica teška tonu.
On je i to preživeo, njegovi drugari traperi čuvši njegovo zaponmaganje i pucanj pre toga, dolaze mu ubrzo u pomoć, te ga na licu mesta oslobađaju medveđeg zagrljaja i "krpe" ga priručnim sredstvima.
Napominjem, u filmu se sve ovo dešava usred zime, gde Sibir izgleda kao Sen Trope u špicu turističke sezonu, u odnosu na krajolik u ovom filmu.
U stvarnost, zlosrećnog Hugh Glassa medved je napao usred leta, ali OK, dobro je zbog priče, ne zameram.
Znači preživeo je izujedan od strane razjarenog medveda, koji se pritom mrtav stropoštao na njega sa visine, ostavljen je od protuva(koje su u prethodno ubile sina) da umre od posledica napada grizlija.
Sve on to preživljava na -300, u snegu do kolena. Upadao je pride i u ledenu reku, još jednom se stropoštao sve tako kljakav ovaj put sa drugom mrtvom životinjom (ubijenim konjem) u neku provaliju
duboku brat - bratu 50 metara, i naravno i to preživeo.Kako je sve to preživeo a da pritom nije 7 puta dobio upalu pluća, ili sepsu. Ne znam.
Džon Rambo, visoko trenirani pripadnik "Zelenih beretki", obučavan da preživi u najekstremnijim uslovima, je za ovog trapera mala beba.

Razumem da je po onoj Hičkokovoj "film veći od života", ali brate, kad se uželim superjunaka, ja gledam onda ekranizacije DC Comics ili Marvela.
Ne razumem, zašto je Iñárritu pribegao ovakvim budalaštinama.
Mogao je naprosto da smanji doživljaj, i da ovaj Hugh Glass zaista preživi manje "letalan" napad grizlija, pa makar i po najgoroj zimi (zbog bolje priče),
ali ovako je baš napravio potpunu grotesku.… Expand

It's just terrible. It tries to be so deep and meaningful but instead it is a mismatch of scenes that don't make sense and its emotionally thin violence is cringe worthy. Revenant may have been filmed well, but the overall movie is just an OK experience.......

The plot of the movie is appear to a little more than cliche........its more like Lieutenant Dunbar meet Robinson Crusoe, but this time Crusoe isRevenant may have been filmed well, but the overall movie is just an OK experience.......

The plot of the movie is appear to a little more than cliche........its more like Lieutenant Dunbar meet Robinson Crusoe, but this time Crusoe is stuck on snow crested forest and cliffs rather than an island.........and a familiar and cliche desire of vengeance drives our main character to progress very slowly through a rather simple and shallow plot.

Another thing that really bothered me about this movie is that at one point the main character was almost dead, his flesh brutally torn by a feral animal and he was on death bed but then he heals on his own and with in few days he is back on horse back and even survived a fall from a cliff and a fall through a waterfall during the period he was supposed to be recuperating........the pace at which Leonardo's character recovers from his wounds is very unrealistic even in a fantasy, this is one of the factors that blew this movie for me.

Its a very slow moving movie and there isn't much that happens in this movie, for the most part Leonardo's acting is comprised of moans and groans rather than actual dialogue delivery........he did a well enough job but I wouldn't give him an Oscar for this.....… Expand

Boring, long and most obnoxiously pointless. I could have lived without seeing this story. I don't feel like it needed to be made.. which is the sign of a terrible movie i guess.

overlong...overacting.....over direction....only cinematography is breathtaking....plot lines(that arent in novel) seems heavily oscar bait. Lead actor seems to supernatural as recovery duration is unnatural

worst movie ever. Stupid and useless. I used to go blind to watch any Di Caprio but that will change from now on. Such an horrible movie : so long, so boring, so pointless. I'm disgusted. The story of Glass is a story of a completely pointless revenge, brutal and inhuman. Without having anything to fight for, all parties in the movie seem to aim at creating pain for the respective other ones. I didn't even enjoyI'm disgusted. This was Dicaprio's worst effort getting an Oscar. Nothing more, but extremely focusing on disguasting and poitless

As a DiCaprio fan I cannot understand all the hype about this movie. The plot is ridiculous and not even close to being believable. Beautiful filming and scenery. Awful everything else - plot, acting, dialogue (there really wasn't any). Plenty of gore and not at all believable, just plain stupid, situations. Here are the various mistakes of this movie. 1.The movie itself. 2.The plot is not believable, the dude gets mauled by a bear, falls of a cliff while riding a horse and falls on a pine tree, and somehow still manages to survive. 3.The antagonist is saying a bunch of nonsense about God, right when he's about to fight to death with the protagonist. 3.At least 47 minutes of the movie is DiCaprio crawling in the snow screaming in pain. 4.There are so many useless scenes, like the one where DiCaprio is catching snow flakes with his tongue along with the first nations guy. 5.The movie doesn't really go anywhere until the last 20 minutes where he gets to the village and Hugh explicitly states that he's going to hunt the antagonist down and kill him. 6.The ending is too predictable.

PS: Just a quick side-note. If I was in the filming of that movie I would've told the director: "Alright, please... Delete every useless scene that doesn't have anything to do with the story. Then trim the movie from the ending backwards, until the part where the antagonist says that God is a squirrel. Once he says "God is a Squirrel... A really fat one too" roll the credits and start making the sequel."… Expand
