The Revenant is intense and dramatic and keeps you entertained for most of it. For many of the important scenes the film relies more on the intensity and action of the scene rather than using music, this is good as it makes you feel more for the characters. DiCaprio and Hardy are spectacular actors and they really show off there skills in this film. As well as them Poulter and Gleeson portray there characters well. DiCaprio makes you feel many emotions throughout from sadness to hatred. This is a fabulous film to kick start 2016. The only problem with the film is the fact that it drags on a lot longer than it should and has you almost itching for it to end. However it is still a definite watch! Expand

It had a very beautiful setting, nice camerawork, and brilliant execution. It is a bit slow, but this is one of those cases where the journey, not the destination, is the point. Also, it is quite gory at times.

It's SO GORGEOUS, sure the film has it's other strong suits but the direction (Inarittu) and cinematography (Lubezki), two categories it won Oscars in, is so overwhelming I couldn't understand why a certain section of the audience did not find this a good watch. It is a very old school film it has this strong 70's vibe where the story is not told and is left for you to figure out. I watched this with a friend who did not enjoy this as much and suggested that the movie would have been better if DiCaprio's character Hugh Glass narrated in the film and spelled out his ordeals to the audience. I called my friend a pleb because I am a high and mighty jerk like that but on a serious note while a narration would have helped with the casual audience, it would also promote spoon feeding hand holding which has become the norm of today's films. The performances were great and a movie like this falls apart if the performances are not good they are the only thing connecting the audience to the film. Well deserved Oscar for DiCaprio, arguably career best performance from him, Tom Hardy was great too shame no Oscar though, some scenes were so intense I could feel it taking a mental toll on me of which the bear mauling scene was on the forefront. Overall a very visceral movie which used only natural light while filming and will stand the test of time, something which this year's winner Spotlight cannot claim. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Revenant performed in ways I couldn't imagine,it was well paced for the most part, the story drove me to the edge of my seat, and it processed amazing scenery. I felt that the film had great character development as well, like I felt like I was really attached to Leos character. we see him fight off bears and survive countless times in situations that would definitely kill a normal human being. That was a downpoint of the film because the bear attack would have paralyzed Leos character for sure, let alone him being able to walk, crawl, swim,or basic activities a person has to do to survive. I overlooked this mistake though since it was when the main plot was introduced into the story, that this might be one of my favorite films of 2016 so far. Leos son gets murdered by Tom Hardy's character(Fitzgerald), and throughout the film,DiCaprio, struggles to survive but is influenced by revenge that he pushes through. The only thing about this movie is that it was really great film, but its defiantly a one time watch and a MUST SEE. Expand

Everything about the movie was beautiful to behold. The entire movie was shot from low angles, either at waist-height or lower. Combined with the low angle, most shots were very close up. The resulting combination made you feel up close with the action and story. You may be afraid of the camera shaking a lot, but that wasn’t the case. All shots were easy to make out… just low and up close.

The central theme of the movie is survival. The main character (played by Leo) has to endure so much, and yet he keeps going. It was tough to watch everything he endures (no spoilers).

The pacing of the movie was slow. That was fine, because it allowed you to soak in the cinematic beauty. But on occasion, the movie seemed to crawl. Near the end, the movie completely shifts gear, becoming more of an action/adventure film. That’s more my speed. It was like going to visit a beautiful park, spending some time in deep meditation, and then deciding to stay for an extra 15 minutes. The first part of the of the park visit was great. The last part? Not so much.

The movie dripped beauty. Usually, it stayed on the cusp of being relaxing and not boring. Occasionally, it crossed that line. It was a good film. Really, it was.

If I had to summarize the movie into one word. Alejandro G Inarritu does it again he makes an orgasmic porn film with the earth being the star of the show. It almost entirely shadows Leo's performance which paled in comparison to the majestic beauty that is the earth. I'm surprised this was even allowed into the theaters because it should've been a triple x film with how much god dam eye porn there was. The only reason this is a nine was because Leo some how managed to tarnish Alejandro beautiful masterpiece. I literally would've watched this film with the actors saying nothing and it probably would've been better.

While it still retains the depth and symbolism of all of his previous films, Innarritu also manages to make one of the best survival movies ever made. Parallels can be drawn between The Revenant and George Miller’s Magnum Opus, Mad Max: Fury Road. Both feature incredible characterization, an extremely well realized world, beautiful cinematography, and a main character who has extremely little dialogue, yet still manages to provide emotional context and be believable with just a stare, manner of walking, or wave of a hand. Both are light on overall plot, yet still manage to create a world that seems real, that the viewer can easily immerse themselves in. Both are masterpieces, and The Revenant caps off a wonderful year for filmmaking, highlighted by returns to form from legends such as Ridley Scott and George Miller, as well as another home run incredibly close after the last by Alejandro G. Innarritu.
Bravo to you, alejandro, I look foward to the next masterpiece.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as a man struggling to survive in the wild in Alejandro G. Inarritu's bloody, bruising frontier epic.

A traditional Old West survival-and-revenge tale assumes the dimensions of a harrowing voyage to the American frontier's heart of darkness in The Revenant. Pushing both brutal realism and extravagant visual poetry to the edges of what one customarily finds in mainstream American filmmaking, director/co-writer Alejandro G. Inarritu, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki and a vast team of visual effects wizards have created a sensationally vivid and visceral portrait of human endurance under very nearly intolerable conditions; this is a film that makes you quite glad to have been born in a century with insulation and central heating. The combination of stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, the director and critical enthusiasm in most quarters will make this Fox release a must for audiences in search of cinematic red meat (something the story offers up in abundance, and mostly uncooked), although vegetarians and viewers with otherwise delicate constitutions could spend half their time squirming with their sweaters pulled up over their eyes.

For a director who normally takes several years between films, Inarritu has remarkably turned around his most ambitious physical production within just one year of his awards-laden Birdman. Even the untutored eye would quickly recognize this as the work of the same key talents; The Revenant may use plenty of cuts and is set nearly entirely outdoors, but the fluid, prowling, sometimes gasp-inducing camera moves, along with the great depth of field, are the same. And both films are about men on the brink, in severe extremis, a condition that helps justify and sustain Inarritu's artistic high-wire act. It's Jeremiah Johnson meets Apocalypse Now.

Set in 1823 in the Rockies, less than two decades after Lewis and Clark led their map-altering, continent-opening expedition through the territory, the story is based on actual people whose real names are used in the film as well as in Michael Punke's 2002 novel, upon which the script is quite accurately described as being "based in part." In a way, the biggest difference between the novel and the film is that the former is aided by a map, very specific descriptions of the proximity of rivers, forts and other landmarks, which provide clear indications of how far the gravely injured hero must travel to get to what might pass for civilization in this context but certainly not in any other.
Inarritu shares screenplay credit with Mark L. Smith, whose prior creative endeavors lie in the realm of low-budget horror (Séance, the Vacancy duo, The Hole), and the script immediately ups the story's existential ante by deliberately not revealing how long a journey mountain man Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) might be facing, or whether he has any realistic hope of finding any place with a roof over it. On top of this, any temptation to provide the central character with interior monologues to reveal his anguished thoughts and feelings has been resisted; for most of the running time, he is limited to expressing himself via painful grunts and cries and very heavy breathing.

Their ranks decimated and with winter closing in, the white men decide to head back, which brings on the scene, 25 minutes in, that which no one who sees it will soon forget (and which will certainly pass through the mind of any viewer who in future takes a hike through bear country). While taking a rest in the forest, Glass is charged by a mother grizzly bear. The man injures her with the one shot he gets off from his long-barreled rifle but then can do nothing as the incensed creature slaps, claws, bites, rips open and steps on him with her giant paws before retreating. Beyond the sheer terror she provokes, the bear's behavior is fascinating to observe; for a good while, she sniffs and assesses her adversary closely, both in the manner of a cook judging the seasoning of a dish and a kid deciding about whether to play with a toy any longer. She retreats ... and then comes back for more.

The score by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto, with additional music by Bryce Dessner, is effectively ominous and grim.

It has been noted before, but The Revenant indicates, more than any film Lubezki has shot, the influence of the Russian team of director Mikhail Kalatozov and cinematographer Sergei Urusevsky on his work.

A brutal and gripping pre-Western.

Filmed on open nature scenarios, the British Columbia, Iñárritu develops a compelling drama of survival in the wilderness and seeking of vengeance. Di Caprio looks astonishing and every time more mature.

Personally I don't think so, but aside from that point, The Revenant is a film that exudes cinematography of the highest level, technically is impeccable, its photography is simply shocking, the music is sublime, all those aspects are perfect to my point of view.

The filmmaking is risky and strong, but there were points where the pace is a bit slow, easily the film could lose 15 or 20 minutes
But apart from a few mistakes in the narrative, The Revenant is a complete film and very, very well done.

How much talent has been put into this movie ... I can not even imagine.
The story is quite simple, nothing amazing, but how it is presented, that makes this movie special.
The acting is as always, very good (I did not really like Tom Hardy, I mean his accent).
The cinematography is superb so is the soundtrack.
The action scenes are very well done, especially the bear scene (that CGI tho).
The second act was too long in my opinion.
I'm glad that most of the movie was made practically without CGI (except for some animals).
And when I think these things have happened, I get the goosebumps.

The direction and cinematography are brilliant. So many long shots, so many interesting visuals, so many shots that come straight out of a german romanticism painting. The action scenes are some of the best I've ever seen. Every shot feels alive, with so many things to see, so much to talk about. All thanks to wonderful directing and genius cinematography. The acting is also great, and while the characters are not like really deep or complex, the performances from the actors really give them so much personality and realism to everyone. Leo really shines in the "survival" scenes. His grunts and screams are so realistic that you feel the pain. This is a movie that might be painful to watch to some, but I know that is the point, and for what it tries to make the viewer feel, it works so much. I could give it a 10, but my only real issues are the story, which like I said, it can get really predictable at so many points. Some dream sequences, like (without spoiling anything) they keep reminding us so many times the same event that affected Hugh's life, like, we know it already, it got to the point where it felt like it was just time filler. Speaking about time: The time is also an issue. The movie is 2 and a half hours long and it does feel like it, because it gets so unnecesarilly slow. Don't think that I can't appreciate a slow paced movie, because one thing is slow but with interesting visuals (like Roma) and other is slow because the shots last longer than what they should.

Regardless, despite those issues, i give it a 9/10, because basically everything else was done in a flawless way. This is a great film and I highly recommend it.

The Revenant is a lot to take in, whether it's regarding the incredible scenery captured on film, the expertly-executed camera work, or the solid casting. The Revenant works so well that it doesn't need a lot of dialogue to keep your attention over its lengthy 2 1/2 hours of runtime. At times, there's heavy brutality, whether it be through a knife fight or a bear attack, that really made me turn a bit in my seat. That kind of portrayal is definitely not for younger folks or weaker stomach. I wasn't completely blown away by the movie, but I see why it had lots of Oscar consideration/victory this past year. If you love survival against all odds in the name of settling a score, The Revenant is your movie. Expand

The soundtrack for this film is exemplary. Music and sounds that enhance the movie experience rather than detract from it like most movies. The cinematography is breathtaking. The acting is great throughout and DiCaprio might even be upstaged by Tom Hardy's excellent portrayal. Although I've never witnessed an actual bear attack, this one looked realistic enough to make it very uncomfortable to watch. The battles also looked realistic. There are a few things in the film that didn't work for me, especially the posse at the end composed of only two people going after the bad guy, and whether or not someone could actually survive the freezing cold in his condition, but overall I enjoyed the film. One with exciting camera angles, beautiful scenery, and gorgeously depicted brutality. While the story ends up boiling down to a simple revenge tale the cast behind it is phenomenal. Bringing to life every emotion necessary to make things succeed.

I am once again blown away by Hardy's ability to play so many different characters. He and DiCaprio are powerful here. The latter in particular brings these events to life in ways you would never think possible. It's a violent, brutal film. One almost unrelenting. DiCaprio truly captures the essence of a man fighting for his very survival.

While nearly every obstacle is gripping in it's depiction, admittedly one flaw the movie has is that the events follow the shocking opening scenes that kick things off in the first place fail to live up to what comes before. There's also the fact that there are going to be those who feel the movie is too long. Some trimming could have been done here or there, but ultimately it's length doesn't do it too much discredit. It's an amazing ride all the way through.

It's an outstandingly put together movie. One with incredible moments happening almost constantly throughout. The violence and harshness of the events on display are masterfully captured. It does stumble in a few areas that keep it from reaching the heights of a true masterpiece (at least in this reviewer's opinion), but overall it's a fantastic movie almost nonetheless. One very deserving of your time for the performances of everyone involved alone.

There are some very graphic and intense scenes of violence it it. This is basically a story of survival in the 1820s. Leonardo plays as a scout (Glass) with his son helping trappers harvest pelts. They are attacked by Indians and forced to retreat into the wilderness in search of a fort many miles away. On route, Glass is attacked within an inch of his life by a bear, but manages to survive. Ultimately, the company is forced to leave him with his son and 2 other men while they forge ahead in search of the fort. This is not a special effects movie, but a plodding story of one man's will to survive and seek vengeance. Much of this movie has no dialog as Glass is on his own and doing what he can to live in the wild. The cinematography is stunning at times. I deducted 2 stars since I did look at my watch twice (2 hr 36 min). The theater was packed and I was glad I went to this movie. You could tell at the end of the movie that it had an impact on the audience since everyone seemed quietly stunned as they filtered out of the theater. Expand

Iñárritu's new collaboration with the cinematographer E. Lubezki. And sadly, it fell a bit short of my exaggerated expectations.
From the standpoint of cinematography, Revenant is expectedly gorgeous. Beautiful environments (shot with natural lighting!), gritty realism of the depicted situations, scenes shot from unusual perspectives - everything is as close to perfection as possible.
However, as for the movie's plot and themes, everything turned out to be disappointingly straightforward. It's just a revenge tale. No subtle nuances, no amendments to the classic conception. Besides, I'd say it has some issues with the motivation of the Indian tribe that's hunting the protagonists for a good part of the movie. What is more, while the overall pacing is good for a 2,5+ hours-long movie, it does drop after the first hour noticeably only to pick up around half an hour later.
As for acting, everything is done professionally - both the lead and secondary role actors perform admirably, but as for DiCaprio, I honestly think he's had stronger and more interesting roles than having to growl, squirm and crawl for two and a half hours straight.
In the end, it's a wonderfully acted, breathtakingly filmed, meticulously polished classic tale about a man overcoming all obstacles imaginable to revenge the death of his loved ones, with no twists or additions plot-wise. Is it a good movie? Yes, definitely, very much so. But is it Oscar-worthy? We will find out this February, but I personally wouldn't say so.

Sucking every inch of beauty out of the Alberta setting, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki has done something incredible in this film; every shot is beautiful. Rarely has there been a film so luciously gorgeous, but Lubezki has done it. This may honestly be one of the prettiest films I have ever seen. The direction from Alejandro Inarritu is fantastic and epic vision for the film certainly came to fruition. A brilliant modern day epic, the film's makeup is also incredible and the acting from Leonardo DiCaprio under this makeup is phenomenal. He does not say too too much, but he does not have to in order to deliver one of the year's best performances. Tom Hardy and Domhnall Gleeson are also phenomenal and almost threaten to steal the show at times. Overall, a brutal epic, The Revenant is a tad long and can be slow in parts, but with brilliant thematic elements and the best cinematography in a film in a long time, the film is a wonderous cinematic achievement. The middle section of the film is a little slow however, and the story itself, while powerful and involving, may actually be the weakest element. Using the Native Americans vs the white man as it's historical basis, the revenant manages to conjure up impeccable imagery and devilishly clever cinematography to soothe an otherwise harrowing journey. Don't get me wrong, it stings hard, the blood stains the screen and you can feel scars form across your skin as you watch Di Caprio clamber and spit through snow, grass and flesh. *Spoiler free review* Leonardo DiCaprio's endless hunt for the future Oscar comes to an end with a stunning performance in this realistic, dark and overall stunning cinematography-masterpiece.

We follow Hugh Glass in the late 1820s of America and his endless fight for survival. It's a suffering journey towards redemption, revenge and of course the continuous passion for living. The realistic direction by Iñárritu, who also directed Birdman, is a present aspect. Just the long, smooth & realistic close-ups and overall sequences are stunningly shot! We see our characters react and express their inner self in a true way that, thanks too the once again great camera work, makes the film something extraordinary and very rare in todays-filmmaking. Even when characters are in real danger and much intensity are a present thing, we still get close and detailed scenes, we even experience the condensation of water from the breath on the camera lens! Wow! The tone of this always-intense, non-stop movie is extraordinary, they went for a real, shoot on location-only flick and we got exactly that. Fingers, body parts and blood are flying wildly and all over the camera and it feels real. It feels like it really did happen. That's how good 'The Revenant is'; never boring.

DiCaprio continues to impress, and he really does have a spectacular performance as Glass. His great passion for acting gives his character much power, and combined with a wonderful and deep writing, we have a very understandable antagonist! Alongside with DiCaprio does Gleeson have a major role, and he steals it! Both ant-and-protagonist are very understandable and it's not a very complex chemistry, which could have been more explored yes I agree, but it didn't have to be that way. The father-son relationship though, could have been much more developed and emotionally-bonded. There wasn't anything unique nor anything 'that very' special about it. It's good yes, but it's just a small aspect that could have been more explored for a better emotional impact. The dialogs are another minor aspect, there's nothing wrong with them but some out there will probably find them a bit boring, and if that's the case I think this movie isn't perfect for you.

This really is a real and slick survival film that made oneself aware of how dark and dangerous the world can be, while at the same time being barely watchable due to the intense and horrifying moments of this Oscar nominee.

The Revenant is an incredible cinematic journey that really encapsulates you in the insolation and savagery of wilderness, and promotes an endearing message that does not preach itself too heavily.
Innuritu has created a vastly different film from his last (Birdman) that really shows his range, in a change from a dialogue heavy to a physical dialogue film in which we feel DiCaprio’s feelings and suffering not through words but through his physicality in the project. Half the film probably isn’t even in English, delving between native Indian and French to really give this feeling of the unknown to the audience. It even shows how the “developed” cultures are more savage than the “underdeveloped” ones with rape and traitors being exposed in their midst.
The demonic and biblical imagery dotted throughout the film exposing Fitzgerald’s twisted and distorted take on a sacred religion is a nicely woven in theme along with the Native Indian respect one - which can in turn be woven in and out of each other.
DiCaprio does a great job in the physical acting side and we really do get to see a man suffer on screen. It is heart-breaking yet incredible to watch. Hardy on the other hand gets the more dialogue driven acting and does it incredibly well. Everyone has been going on about how great DiCaprio is in this film but really Tom Hardy plays his part just as well if not better. You really come to loathe the man.
The direction and cinematography of the film is incredible. The tracking shots really immerse you in the gritty and dirty scenes and makes the battles and action sequences feel alive and not just adapted from a piece of paper. It makes them feel like they were actually captured as they happened. The scene is also the most visceral and scary bear attack scenes I have ever seen, it was impeccably paced and gut-wretchingly brutal. I winced at a few parts of it.
Incredible film making, but pacing throughout can wither at times due to lack of dialogue. A beautiful piece of art, with amazing cinematography and poignant messages.

Based of the novel The Revenant, detailing the real life story of Hugh Glass, Iñárritu tries his absolute best to recreate reality, transporting the audience into the actual history making us feel as though we are in the moment struggling to survive against all odds with Glass, feeling each moment of cold, pain and hurt that DiCaprio's character is feeling within each moment of the film.During this time we develop an emotional attachment with the character as we take on his struggle, his burden to take revenge on the man who left him for dead and took the life of his son.

Where this film struggles to garner higher points is its over-reliance on symbolism, a recurring motif within the film dealing with issues of Religion and Spirituality , in which Glass character keeps seeing and hearing his deceased native american wife who was murdered by an officer prior to the films events, it is in this symbolism that the audience is supposed to appreciate how much glass has truly lost, however with Leonardo DiCaprio's powerhouse performance it essentially become re-enforcing the obvious that only the mentally challenged would struggle to understand.

Supporting actor wise Will Poulter and Domhnall Gleeson give tremendous performances in their respective roles as a hunter and captain of the hunting party. Tom Hardy plays a compelling villain however in my opinion i don't find him to be that tremendous of an actor where his determination towards the role is clearly there, i never got beyond looking as his character as any more than a stereotypical frontier man.

Where the Revenant is a good time, it is a long time, standing at 156 minutes long and with adds included it essentially becomes 3 hours of sitting in the cinema, which essentially isn't a bad thing, however because of how long the film is you can tell that it rushes towards the finish line with the conclusion feeling more or less like a footnote at the bottom of the script. Where the film doesn't necessarily garner the ending it deserves, it doesn't tarnish the brilliant quality that is presented in the rest of the film

Overall the film is a 8.5/10 and is worthy of at watch at your local cinema just for the sheer experience the film gives

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I haven't posted many reviews on this website recently, as I was focused on my daily studies, but I took the time to see this movie, and it was surprisingly great. I knew I was going for a slowly paced movie, but it actually didn't hit me as one. It never got boring, nor too slow for me. The violence is so awesome in this movie. Either the bear scene, or Leonardo DiCaprio's character covering himself inside of a horse's dead body, it was friggin brutal. The bear attack was especially frightening. What I like about this scene is how the bear interacts with Glass. He first attacks him, smells him and goes away for a few seconds, than Glass grabs his gun and shoots the bear, although the bear attacks him again, and shakes the poor guy like dogs do to the rugs. Then the bear stops one more time, and few seconds later, the bear takes his shot one more time, but Glass stabs it, and they both fall off, with the bear on top of Glass's body. It's amazing how they edited and choreographed this particular bit.

These excellent scenes aside, I can understand people having problems with the "revenge thriller" trope that gets a little predictable in the end, but I liked the symbolism, as Glass used his strength and his memories about his family to stay on his feet and seek punishment for the man who killed his son. Cinematography, just great. There was parts where Glass must have wondered: "Wow, if I die, at least I die watching this God's masterpiece". It sounds silly, I know, but that's the effective way I can describe it. It's purely amazing.

The camerawork is fantastic. I don't quite remember if it had one-take action sequence, but there parts where shots last very long, and I loved that. The shot where the horse and Glass fall down is fantastic. This movie also needs praise for its sound design. Seriously.

"The Revenant" is a pretty good December film. If anything, I think DiCaprio should win that Oscar. While I liked Matt Damon's charismatic performance in "The Martian", Leonardo really stood out here, as the icing on the cake. And Tom Hardy was great here too.

Final Score: 8/10

That's from the perspective of the new settlers. It's not much better for the native Indians. The film tries to be very realistic and is very gruesome many times.

Cons: None, I suppose... except that this seems like Oscar bait...

Who should NOT watch this? This is an R-rated film due to the violence. A couple in the early stages of their relationship, any person who cannot bear gruesome violence, young teenagers and children should not watch this.

Score: 4/5 (no half score). Worth watching in the cinema.

It gives the feeling that you're actually there as the characters are (literally) breathing unto the camera. It is a gorgeously looking movie that's a love letter to nature. However the cinematography is almost better than the story actually deserves.

The problem is that The Revenant drags its feet. It is a two and a half hour film and you feel it easily could have been shortened down to two hours of even less when you look at the actual substance of the story. Its slow movement and too many weird dream sequences can wear one's patience down.

That said if you don't mind slow moving films then The Revenant is highly recommendable. It is a quality drama film with solid performances. It is teeming with metaphors that will take many viewings to decipher. The story was good, but I did not like the ending. For all the time that it took to get there the final resolution felt quick. In fact the movie is less satisfying the more it goes on.

Overall The Revenant is a spectacle that's a visual joy, but I doubt its for everyone. I'm not even sure whether I liked it and my high score is due more to the film's obvious quality rather than personal favour.

The acting here is near perfect as is the directing. Alejandro González Iñárritu has taken the amazing performances of the actors involved which, of course, include Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy (and a whole list of supporting actors, who all turn in award calibre performances, especially Forrest Goodluck, who plays DiCaprio's half breed son), and molded the film into a near masterpiece of cinematic art. For me, what keeps this movie from having a perfect 5 stars is that it drags on a bit in the middle. Is this one of DeCaprio's greatest performances? I think so. I'll be very surprised if he doesn't finally take home an Oscar. Expand

Sami zdecydujcie.

This visually stunning, uncompromising and often brutal revenge story and survival tale is based on the extraordinary experiences of early 19th century fur trapper and “mountain man” Hugh Glass, with plenty of dramatic license taken of course, but it also doubles as a compelling little history lesson with a clear subtext of ecological conservation.

After all, the North American fur trade was a global industry which preceded the gold & oil rush, and which had a clear impact on its environment, an early example on the damaging effects of capitalism which would become much clearer with the imminent American industrial revolution.

Beyond a tale of survival and revenge, this is an early 19th century narrative dealing with “First Nations” and the treatment of indigenous peoples by the colonizing Europeans, but rather refreshingly, ‘The Revenant’ doesn’t sugar-coat the existing complex relationships between the native peoples of North America and the brutality involved.

Much will be made about breaking the so-called “snubbing” of Leonardo DiCaprio at the Oscars, but any acclaim directed his way is well deserved as he delivers a committed performance that’s intentionally often hard to watch but impossible to ignore. Not to mention a strong supporting cast, with Tom Hardy as the antagonist of the piece particularly catching the eye.

Iñárritu and cinematographer extraordinaire Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki’s insistence on using only natural light and the film’s long production time, coupled with the logistical nightmare of location shooting in such a beautiful but unforgiving environment, all conspire to place ‘The Revenant’ pretty high on the list of most gruelling movie shoots.

But that pain is up on the screen for all to see and is crucial to both the narrative and the very feel of the film, the result is visceral and striking, a real triumph of naturalistic filmmaking. Perfectly captured by constantly moving cameras, signature long tracking shots and low angle close-ups that give ‘The Revenant’ a real sense of urgency.

In fact the film feels like Iñárritu co-opted the cast and crew to take some great voyage of discovery to understand the people they were portraying, men who lived on the edge of survival in inhospitable and barely discovered lands on the frontiers of North America nearly 200 years ago, and of whom very little is known much less written.

The Bottom Line…
Alejandro González Iñárritu’s fascinating evolution as a filmmaker continues with this remarkable tale of survival, revenge and redemption, ‘The Revenant’ is a visceral and engrossing cinematic experience that deserves all the praise it gets.

His inability to properly display accents, an overuse of body-language and yelling, and his generic grimace often made me go, "Yep that's him alright". Though with this role I see him much differently. It could be the awful facial hair, but I think it's rooted in the fact that he barely ever speaks. And the character is spent mostly crawling or limping, so the wild gestures are kept in check. Then when the movie gets tense and he really needs to struggle it looks more convincing, raw, and even natural. And speaking of things that look natural let us briefly summarize this cinematography and camera work. it is widely known that film used a lot of natural lighting, the Barry Lyndon technique that just isn't usually seen today. It payed off. I understand that it was incredibly difficult to film and required a lot of extra work, but it works. I sat in the theater (not in IMAX) thinking, "if i visited this place this is exactly what it would look like. I would say that the film has a grey aesthetic, but the backdrops showing a crisp clear image of a foggy forest help it all blend naturally. It is really contributes to 2015's amazing run of beautiful films. Out of all the films this year, Mad Max: Fury Road and this were the best looking. The camera work is also very repetitive, but interesting nonetheless. The film uses juxtaposition all throughout. We may start on a wide helicopter shot of a mountain, only to do a one take zoom to DiCaprio trudging through the snow. Maybe we will have the sun reflect off the camera showing nature in all of it's glory, only to have 'man' use it as a playground for gritty, blood soaked battles. The film likes to go from the larger picture to the little details. I find it to work because we can see how personal and up close the tense situations are. Also the camera feels married to the idea panning. Every sequence involving a dilemma is likely to show the dilemma through a pan to the left or right. It got on my nerves, but really didn't kill anything. Some of the things that are going to turn people are the sequences where DiCaprio is alone and must survive. There is two good character interactions, and one self inflicted medical treatment that felt fresh, but not much else. Giving the film props, it kept with its identity of slow one take shots, DiCaprio not speaking, and beautiful cinematography. Unfortunately they were focused on things that we would have implied anyway. Nothing note worthy or interesting happens with any other character after DiCaprio is on his own. But the characters are still believable and developed well enough. Tom Hardy, especially, pulls of the paranoid, racist, rebel with charm even though it has been done a million times. Sometimes the movie will have a bit of a mixed bag with how much Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) hallucinates, and the hallucinations aren't exactly rocking my mind. The film does a much better job making battles have real weight. The first battle and sequence with the bear is done remarkably well; every hit feels like a crushing blow. Overall the film suffers when it has to have survival, which can be a real problem for people. Though if you excuse that then you are left with a beautifully looking, drama that does a lot to impress the eyes. Expand

Probably one of the most beautifully-shot movies ever made. In the first half of this movie, it seems like Leo only says about eight words. But somehow it works. In the second half, he talks a little more, but not much. It's a quiet film, as far as dialog goes. But the filming is almost a virtual reality or GoPro-type experience -- very immersive.

For me, when the experience was over, I felt like I'd just seen a masterpiece. It feels like a work of art more than movie. Leo was put through the ringer in the making of it, and I think he actually aged a few years in the process. If he doesn't win an Oscar this year, it's a conspiracy :)

The movie made sense to me. But some people don't seem to get it. I read a review on Vox and it felt like we hadn't even seen the same film. That reviewer compared it to the Good Dinosaur - WTF? It sounded like it was written by a twenty-year-old who couldn't comprehend or appreciate it. But my wife also gave it a 'so-so.' Apparently, the movie only speaks to certain people, and others don't really get it.

If you get it, you'll know you're seeing something special. If not, oh well.

The biggest positives are the amazing cinematography, and acting by Leo, Hardy and others. Leo will probably get an Oscar for his performance. There are several very memorable and moving scenes, particularly during the first 60 minutes. The CGI bear scene was very well done. Also, the movie has the "feel" of being historically accurate.

The negatives have been well covered by the professional critics for the most part. The movie seems to try too hard to hit an emotional pitch, but kinda falls flat. There are too many flashback scenes and long (albeit beautiful) shots that never really do what they intend to do. The plot was a bit predictable, and I found the end to be a unsatisfying overall.

Any movie with Leo is never a disappointment. I will say the story in itself was very sad, almost depressing so it was sort of painful to watch in my opinion. Overall the movie was very real, filmed well with good actors. I was glad I decided to see it and recommend others to do so as well. Expand

It's a revenge story focused on survival and overcoming the worst possible situations imaginable. We'll start with the best thing about this film. The cinematography. WOW does this film look AMAZING. Every shot is done with natural lighting and it really shows in the film. This movie is brutally realistic, from the bear attack to the final showdown between Hugh Glass and John Fitzgerald. This film is violent and dark and it's realism and amazing cinematography make the film a true delight to watch even if some of the scenes are very brutal. Now to the story, while good, isn't complicated at all and is very easy to follow. The characters are simple, you have the strong leader, Hugh Glass who is very looked up to by most in his group, Tom Hardy who plays the antagonist that leaves Hugh Glass for dead and murders his son right in front of him. While simple, these characters are portrayed very well by Leo and Tom Hardy and both men deserve a nod for their performances in this movie and while everyone screams for an Oscar for Leo, Tom Hardy did an amazing job in this film as well. What more is there to say about the story? Long story short, Glass is mauled by a bear, left for dead by John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy) who murders his son and now Glass must rise above the elements and survive a harsh and unforgiving environment with some aboriginal tribes thrown in as well along the way. It drags on way too long and made the film feel much longer than it really was and by the last 10-15 minutes it was feeling like it was never going to end. As a movie, The Revenant would receive maybe a 5 or 6. It's simple, drags on a little too long, but the characters are interesting enough to keep it going strong. As a film, The Revenant really shines. To the atmosphere, cinematography, and how realistic it is, it's one you have to see. It'll leave you thinking "how did they do that? how could they get that shot?". The bear attack in particular gave me chills and it tried to do that and it succeeded in doing so. It's one of those movies you can watch maybe once or twice a year, but it is an amazing film even with a long run time. Expand

Though his talent is undeniable he's simply got too little to work with here. Despite being the main attraction, his dialogue is so far apart and and between so much action that he's given little opportunity to win our hearts. Even when these opportunities do present themselves the writing is unfortunately much thinner than what you'd expect from a role played by the best actor of the year. For these unfortunate reasons we shall all prepare ourselves for yet another March full of "Leo has no statue" memes. Perhaps one in which the Oscar is mauling him instead of a bear. Hardy however, is outstanding, making the best of every scene and warranting himself a nomination of his own, though it's doubtful he'll get it. Even Poulter does nobly in what must have been a daunting list of co-stars. The only role I found distasteful is that of my fellow ginger's. Though Gleeson made my list of those to watch after Ex Machina, this performance makes it two in-a-row that I've felt he was miscast and for largely the same reasons (the other being Star Wars). Gleeson seems to be stepping into roles suited better for men twice his age. Though he looked the part here much better than in space, he still lacks the authority to create a conviction from within a leader.

If you didn't catch the hints in the trailer, this film is not for the faint of heart. It's absolutely brutal. In the end, we've seen a lot of things, most not short of sheer beauty, and for what? A simple payback story riddled with unmoving flashbacks of a loss we're led to care little about. Unfortunately, for all the incredible visuals and one hell of a survival picture, we're left with undeveloped characters and back stories that left too little off the table to have truly connected with the plot. It's an absolute tragedy to have come all this way and feel next to nothing inside.

However, from start to finish the screen is never void of absolute beauty. On every technical aspect the Revenant is a true masterpiece. The score is solid, the direction is Oscar worthy, the setting is gorgeous, and the cinematography is breathtaking. Many scenes are so beautiful they make it worth the watch despite everything I've said negatively thus far. Honestly, if for nothing else, this film is worth the watch just to see a bear attack that is one of the best cinematic experiences I've had in front of a big screen in my entire life. The technical feat can't override the lack of character development and paper thin plot, but despite all it lacks, it lacks not one single shot that isn't completely and indisputably beautiful.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Anyone calling The Revenant boring went into this movie thinking it would be another shoot-em-up western, while the only western I can think of comparing it to would be Jeremiah Johnson. If you haven't seen that, check it out, its a less gory version of this film except the protagonist is after Crow Indians instead of Tom Hardy.

Aside from that its hard to know where to begin with this movie. The cinematography is amazing. The setting is excellent. The performances by everyone are stellar. The sound editing is incredible. And the bear attack is all too real, seriously well done CGI.

I rated it an 8 because I fear if I go any higher Leo won't get the Oscar he deserves.
