And I thought it was fantastic, yes, I admit that is not my favorite movie of all time, but it's really good and I understand why it's nominated. One of the things that I liked the most was the way the camera was positioned in the whole movie. Leonardo Di Caprio was fantastic and the whole cast was on point. Not a movie for all audiences; if you love movies, you should watch it. Expand

They will ruin it for you and will not enjoy it themselves. I loved the acting, story-line, fight scenes, gore... Really makes you feel like a man. I loved this movie, but it did not get a 10 for one reason. The sound score was absolutely atrocious. Painful to listen to. During an extremely dramatic fight scene we hear 4 vibrato notes through out the whole movie. Who hires a first time, contemporary composer to make a film score for such a high rated movie with such high standards for excellence? I love Leonardo DiCaprio, and hope he gets that Oscar.. and for his acting in this movie I believe he should receive it. However, this movie deserves no other recognition because of the terrible decisions made by whomever decided to hire such a terrible composer. Expand

While it still retains the depth and symbolism of all of his previous films, Innarritu also manages to make one of the best survival movies ever made. Parallels can be drawn between The Revenant and George Miller’s Magnum Opus, Mad Max: Fury Road. Both feature incredible characterization, an extremely well realized world, beautiful cinematography, and a main character who has extremely little dialogue, yet still manages to provide emotional context and be believable with just a stare, manner of walking, or wave of a hand. Both are light on overall plot, yet still manage to create a world that seems real, that the viewer can easily immerse themselves in. Both are masterpieces, and The Revenant caps off a wonderful year for filmmaking, highlighted by returns to form from legends such as Ridley Scott and George Miller, as well as another home run incredibly close after the last by Alejandro G. Innarritu.
Bravo to you, alejandro, I look foward to the next masterpiece.

Realistically heavy in gore, sweeping in the spectacle of its scenery, and featuring great performances by the cast, namely Leonardo Dicaprio, the Revenant delivers both as a striking story of survival, and a tale of revenge.

Beautiful piece of "cinema".

Every frame is cautiously made - technically it is masterpiece. I was drawn into story through naturalistic story-telling, long one-shot scenes and pure acting. Whole film makes me think about psychology of characters and purpose of narrated story. There are few exaggerated moments looks wired in content of whole naturalistic vision of film.

This film makes me worth visiting a cinema to see this in 4K on big canvas.

Since his victory at Oscars last year, Innaritu has become a famous name and perhaps that is how he pushed the financiers to add 100 million more the the movie which was shot in the best location of northern america.

The sequences, is the word that keeps circulating my mind after watching it. The best one is the opening one. Because it has that suspense and thrill, you don't know who are they and who is attacking and what is coming to be their fate. All you see is brilliant work at screen and that great score in your ears.

Movie soon starts to take shape still we are confused what revenge will be the soul of it. Bear scene is deadly, but as internet has been taking about, it's exaggerating (much like Inarritu's overly hyped Birdman). Soon after we find out what revenge the title talks about.

But more then revenge, it's a survival movie. A man who survives everything being driven by the energy to seek revenge. Scenery of the movie is magnificent. And they have brilliant cinematography and Score to make it magical. However at time it feels excessive and ploy to win awards (we know how much they want it). Even at time's it felt like National Geographic's documentary.

One thing that The Revanant lacks is the grip over script. Characters are quite shabby with focus on only one character and one goal which makes everyone in the story a supporting character who did not get any attention by the writers. As I mentioned before, one is confused who would Glass seek revenge from? But even after it's cleared, we are so driven by the title and the sequences that we don't realize how hallow the reason of revenge is. And we also ignore the superficial recovery of Glass's wounds which accelerated (even) at the final night at camp. Not to mention the use of horses that much high at snow is bit too much.

Leonardo Dicaprio is heart and soul of the movie. The actor brings all the intensity (much like his all roles) to the character. He slept in a horse carcass once but he slept in Glass's mind for months. He deserves every bit of recognition for going into those frozen waters, eating raw meat and doing deadly stunts. Tom hardy (who is amazing otherwise) rather then playing a southern rotten soldier played Christian Bale from The Fighter. His accent was very fake and so was his performance. Rest of the actors did not got much to do they appeared as puppets. Cinematography, Score and Editing are perfect. Inarritu tried to take inspiration from James Cameron for stunning visualization which he succeeded but Mr Cameron never compromises on the script which Inarritu did. But he brought together all those people and made this movie which is great (if you could digest all lope-holes)

What resonated with me the most, besides the incredible battle scene with the rondelay of swooping camera work, was the weaving together of glass's loss with the search by the native American father. The convergence makes for an ending that is deeply beautiful. Since Idris Elba and Abraham Attah were tragically overlooked for Oscars, I'm fine with Leo getting the award. The film could have easily been cut by 30 minutes. Actually, the most interesting part of the movie was the Pawnee chief's search for his kidnapped daughter. Leonardo DiCaprio does grunting and grimacing well. He will win the Oscar, but any decent actor would have done well with such a meaty role. Alejandro Inarritu's direction of the battle scenes is exceptional. There is a realism in the opening scene, especially, that is unique. If only the story could have justified the movie's length. If you are not a connoisseur of cinematography and vistas or of triage of wounds, you will be bored, and that is a guarantee. The ending fight scene is full of cliches seen hundreds of times in other movies. Solid, but not spectacular, work by DiCaprio. He will get his Oscar this year, mainly because of amazing work in his previous movies. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I haven't posted many reviews on this website recently, as I was focused on my daily studies, but I took the time to see this movie, and it was surprisingly great. I knew I was going for a slowly paced movie, but it actually didn't hit me as one. It never got boring, nor too slow for me. The violence is so awesome in this movie. Either the bear scene, or Leonardo DiCaprio's character covering himself inside of a horse's dead body, it was friggin brutal. The bear attack was especially frightening. What I like about this scene is how the bear interacts with Glass. He first attacks him, smells him and goes away for a few seconds, than Glass grabs his gun and shoots the bear, although the bear attacks him again, and shakes the poor guy like dogs do to the rugs. Then the bear stops one more time, and few seconds later, the bear takes his shot one more time, but Glass stabs it, and they both fall off, with the bear on top of Glass's body. It's amazing how they edited and choreographed this particular bit.

These excellent scenes aside, I can understand people having problems with the "revenge thriller" trope that gets a little predictable in the end, but I liked the symbolism, as Glass used his strength and his memories about his family to stay on his feet and seek punishment for the man who killed his son. Cinematography, just great. There was parts where Glass must have wondered: "Wow, if I die, at least I die watching this God's masterpiece". It sounds silly, I know, but that's the effective way I can describe it. It's purely amazing.

The camerawork is fantastic. I don't quite remember if it had one-take action sequence, but there parts where shots last very long, and I loved that. The shot where the horse and Glass fall down is fantastic. This movie also needs praise for its sound design. Seriously.

"The Revenant" is a pretty good December film. If anything, I think DiCaprio should win that Oscar. While I liked Matt Damon's charismatic performance in "The Martian", Leonardo really stood out here, as the icing on the cake. And Tom Hardy was great here too.

Final Score: 8/10

My expectations were high, based on Metacritic reviews and all the Golden Globe awards. First the kudos: yes, a stunningly realistic performance by De Caprio. He will probably win the Oscar. But while physically challenging, his character wasn't deep nor difficult to portray. And the bear attack: incredibly realistic. If you watched the infamous bear attack in the German zoo, they learned well. But this 2.5 hour movie was 1 hour too long. The ending so very predictable from the outset, even though the real ending between Glass and Fitzpatrick was absolutely the opposite of what we saw: see Hugh Glass on Wikipedia. Finally, lovely scenery. But, trust me, this movie was boring with a capital B. Expand

If I had to summarize the movie into one word. Alejandro G Inarritu does it again he makes an orgasmic porn film with the earth being the star of the show. It almost entirely shadows Leo's performance which paled in comparison to the majestic beauty that is the earth. I'm surprised this was even allowed into the theaters because it should've been a triple x film with how much god dam eye porn there was. The only reason this is a nine was because Leo some how managed to tarnish Alejandro beautiful masterpiece. I literally would've watched this film with the actors saying nothing and it probably would've been better.

You have people walking in valleys, forests,on rocky mountaintops in winter,in no particular meaningful order, let alone with no realistic timeline for anyone to have covered that much ground or altitude.Foothills, plains and high rocky mountain terrain all look really nice but it makes no sense. At one point you even have people walking in a rainforest type biome that in no way corresponds to the others(environments both on east and west side of the Rocky Mountains). Most of the scenes, supposedly in the remote wilderness, have disturbed/trampled snow all around. There are many scenes of people tramping around in the water and then presumably surviving outside, with no shelter in wet clothes? Ten minutes in cold water and muscle function is lost so the scene where the protagonist floats down the river in winter and then sleeps on the bank when he crawls out is just ridiculous. The seeming ignorance around portraying the events in a somewhat realistic manner detracts from this movie greatly for me. This movie is based on a true story that ended differently. There was also an earlier version of this story that, while not as pretty as this film, was more consistent with the real story. Iñárritu can apparently do wrong in the eyes of Hollywood. But while I liked Amores Perros, 21 Grams and Babel, I thought Birdman had a dumb ending and the annoying artifact of the faux continuous shot was pretentious. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie in my honest opinion isn't very impressive.
The Revenant does a lot of good things. It has great scenery and some intense action scenes; I especially like the grizzly bear scene. However, that's all I can really say good about this movie. The characters didn't really seem interesting, and the main character just seemed stupid. I can understand trying to take out a grizzly bear, but after getting back to commendable help, he proceeds to throw himself off of a cliff. I know the common argument is that he was being chased, but it still seemed like a dumb idea to make your main character injure himself over and over and OVER again. Plus the story really didn't seem engaging. The classic "get revenge for my dead son/wife" shtick didn't move me into the film. Also, this movie is SLOW. It's a few plot points, then heavy breathing while trying to survive, rinse and repeat. I didn't think it was a bad film, it just seemed boring to me. If you like this film, that's great; good for you, i'm sure many others will agree with you. I just didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

The Revenant gets MY score of a 4/10.

Dicaprio is good but the real standout is Tom Hardy. Hardy is always great, but here he gives what may be his career best as a truly devious villain. Lubezki's cinematography is expectedly miraculous, but even more so than Gravity and perhaps even Birdman and Innuaritu also does great directional work once again. The middle section of the film is a little slow however, and the story itself, while powerful and involving, may actually be the weakest element. But with such scope, grandeur, and such a satisfying journey overall, the Revenant nabs the distinction of being one of 2015's best movies. And it is something to see on the big screen. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Revenant performed in ways I couldn't imagine,it was well paced for the most part, the story drove me to the edge of my seat, and it processed amazing scenery. I felt that the film had great character development as well, like I felt like I was really attached to Leos character. we see him fight off bears and survive countless times in situations that would definitely kill a normal human being. That was a downpoint of the film because the bear attack would have paralyzed Leos character for sure, let alone him being able to walk, crawl, swim,or basic activities a person has to do to survive. I overlooked this mistake though since it was when the main plot was introduced into the story, that this might be one of my favorite films of 2016 so far. Leos son gets murdered by Tom Hardy's character(Fitzgerald), and throughout the film,DiCaprio, struggles to survive but is influenced by revenge that he pushes through. The only thing about this movie is that it was really great film, but its defiantly a one time watch and a MUST SEE. Expand

Everything about the movie was beautiful to behold. The entire movie was shot from low angles, either at waist-height or lower. Combined with the low angle, most shots were very close up. The resulting combination made you feel up close with the action and story. You may be afraid of the camera shaking a lot, but that wasn’t the case. All shots were easy to make out… just low and up close.

The central theme of the movie is survival. The main character (played by Leo) has to endure so much, and yet he keeps going. It was tough to watch everything he endures (no spoilers).

The pacing of the movie was slow. That was fine, because it allowed you to soak in the cinematic beauty. But on occasion, the movie seemed to crawl. Near the end, the movie completely shifts gear, becoming more of an action/adventure film. That’s more my speed. It was like going to visit a beautiful park, spending some time in deep meditation, and then deciding to stay for an extra 15 minutes. The first part of the of the park visit was great. The last part? Not so much.

The movie dripped beauty. Usually, it stayed on the cusp of being relaxing and not boring. Occasionally, it crossed that line. It was a good film. Really, it was.

As expected DiCaprio is superb as is Tom Hardy. Leo's performance is as great and Oscar worthy as his last in the other end of the spectrum urbane "The Wolf of Wall Street" (I rate 10 and best of 2013), and the best scene in that movie had him crawling along the ground which I thought was good practice for all his crawling on the ground in this. As for Hardy, I've seen him in half a dozen major movies now and I still do not know what he really looks like, what he really sounds like or who the hell he really is! Talk about a chameleon.
This film is much more experiential than conventional movie. I also couldn't help but think of the films of Terrence Malick in the way he visually and sonically puts the audience into the setting in a way unlike any other and creates the experience via purely cinematic means with little if any dialogue. Malick's work however poetic is short on plot (often to its great detriment), and so is this to an extent. There is no question the filmmakers here are influenced by his work, which is not to say they aren't original in their own right. This movie is stunningly photographed and expertly edited. The score is subtlety, hauntingly effective without being over-bearing. The surround sound is more pronounced than in most movies, even the biggest. The visual effects are of perhaps the best variety, you don't even realize the extent to which you are seeing them. There is a marked punctual intensity to the action that is disturbingly effective and a wonder to how they orchestrated it all.

If sentimentality is the enemy of great art, and this film is low on sentiment but not devoid of it, then does a higher amount of sentimentality ruin a movie? It is a very fine line. "Dances with Wolves" (rating 10) came to mind while watching this as it's the same kind of story, same broad period, and also features great awesome spanning western landscapes. To me that was the very best a big Hollywood movie can be because it got me completely swept up in the emotion of it. It's ultimately always emotion that wins at the end of the day. Emotion is art's greatest aspiration and achievement. While there is some here certainly brought forth by the fine actors, it's not the kind of emotional experience that stayed with me long after leaving the theatre which is ultimately the only true test of a great movie whether it's funny and you're telling jokes about it later or haunted in your sleep thereafter. I'm not saying it hasn't stayed with me, just that it's scaled comparatively to what I know is possible.
Another movie this made me think of was "First Blood" (10) in that it features a similar kind of relentless chase for the duration and a will to survive against the harshest environment and maybe even harsher people.

Note to filmmakers: Look at this film style wise in how it uses a moving camera. The camera is almost constantly moving in rugged exterior environments yet is always smooth. It isn't shaky even amidst rough, intense action. It's called steadicam and there is never, ever any excuse if you have any kind of budget to have that stupid shaky handheld camera style! It is only acceptable used as POV and for short durations, not as style for an entire feature! As I continually rant, our eyes do not see that way contrary to the mentality of those who choose that method, so it is not more real but less so! You can cut fast but don't ever go both handheld shaky and cut it to ribbons for extra intensity when really all you are doing is losing the viewer in something that can't be followed and is subliminally known to be cheated (like the second two Bourne movies which someday will appear very dated I believe). It's not more effective, it's ineffective. Let this 'action' movie even if not the most frenetic possible be the example.

However, this very physically demanding performance does not wow as it should. The almost total lack of dialogue for the character results in viewer alienation and a lack of empathy. One watches the horrific events unfold, but with a dispassionate detachment and some distaste. Director Alejandro G Inarritu creates a wonderful atmosphere environmentally. The locations, beautiful but forbidding, are awesomely captured by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki whose work here is just stunning. The film is worth seeing for his achievement alone. Also many scenes have a visceral quality to them, none more so than the Indian and bear attacks which both happen within the first half an hour and are excitingly and shockingly staged. Visual effects for the bear are incredibly good. After this events meander from one bloody scene to the next leaving one somewhat anaesthetised to the grisliness of it all. Suspension of disbelief is also a requirement in accepting just how quickly DiCaprio is back on his feet after his mauling by the bear, let alone scaling mountains (one sequence shows him at the top of a mountain unable to walk; the next scene shows him drinking from the lake below!). In support, Tom Hardy also disappoints, but this is once again mainly due to a vocalisation of his character that is often unintelligible. As we all know DiCaprio will win his long overdue Oscar here, and there is no denying that he is a deserving recipient. It’s just a shame that he will be rewarded, as happens all too often by the conventional and short sighted Academy, for this performance over one of his previous more deserving roles. Expand

This visually stunning, uncompromising and often brutal revenge story and survival tale is based on the extraordinary experiences of early 19th century fur trapper and “mountain man” Hugh Glass, with plenty of dramatic license taken of course, but it also doubles as a compelling little history lesson with a clear subtext of ecological conservation.

After all, the North American fur trade was a global industry which preceded the gold & oil rush, and which had a clear impact on its environment, an early example on the damaging effects of capitalism which would become much clearer with the imminent American industrial revolution.

Beyond a tale of survival and revenge, this is an early 19th century narrative dealing with “First Nations” and the treatment of indigenous peoples by the colonizing Europeans, but rather refreshingly, ‘The Revenant’ doesn’t sugar-coat the existing complex relationships between the native peoples of North America and the brutality involved.

Much will be made about breaking the so-called “snubbing” of Leonardo DiCaprio at the Oscars, but any acclaim directed his way is well deserved as he delivers a committed performance that’s intentionally often hard to watch but impossible to ignore. Not to mention a strong supporting cast, with Tom Hardy as the antagonist of the piece particularly catching the eye.

Iñárritu and cinematographer extraordinaire Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki’s insistence on using only natural light and the film’s long production time, coupled with the logistical nightmare of location shooting in such a beautiful but unforgiving environment, all conspire to place ‘The Revenant’ pretty high on the list of most gruelling movie shoots.

But that pain is up on the screen for all to see and is crucial to both the narrative and the very feel of the film, the result is visceral and striking, a real triumph of naturalistic filmmaking. Perfectly captured by constantly moving cameras, signature long tracking shots and low angle close-ups that give ‘The Revenant’ a real sense of urgency.

In fact the film feels like Iñárritu co-opted the cast and crew to take some great voyage of discovery to understand the people they were portraying, men who lived on the edge of survival in inhospitable and barely discovered lands on the frontiers of North America nearly 200 years ago, and of whom very little is known much less written.

The Bottom Line…
Alejandro González Iñárritu’s fascinating evolution as a filmmaker continues with this remarkable tale of survival, revenge and redemption, ‘The Revenant’ is a visceral and engrossing cinematic experience that deserves all the praise it gets.

The soundtrack for this film is exemplary. Music and sounds that enhance the movie experience rather than detract from it like most movies. The cinematography is breathtaking. The acting is great throughout and DiCaprio might even be upstaged by Tom Hardy's excellent portrayal. Although I've never witnessed an actual bear attack, this one looked realistic enough to make it very uncomfortable to watch. The battles also looked realistic. There are a few things in the film that didn't work for me, especially the posse at the end composed of only two people going after the bad guy, and whether or not someone could actually survive the freezing cold in his condition, but overall I enjoyed the film. Alejandro González Iñárritu has taken the amazing performances of the actors involved which, of course, include Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy (and a whole list of supporting actors, who all turn in award calibre performances, especially Forrest Goodluck, who plays DiCaprio's half breed son), and molded the film into a near masterpiece of cinematic art. For me, what keeps this movie from having a perfect 5 stars is that it drags on a bit in the middle. Is this one of DeCaprio's greatest performances? I think so. Visuals are definitely great. I mostly saw Leonardo showing the world the beauty of nature and giving a face to native/indigenous people. And of course his commitment to acting.
I just think if you replaced Leo with a no-name actor it would have been like watching a B movie (aside from the cinematography).

The biggest positives are the amazing cinematography, and acting by Leo, Hardy and others. Leo will probably get an Oscar for his performance. There are several very memorable and moving scenes, particularly during the first 60 minutes. The CGI bear scene was very well done. Also, the movie has the "feel" of being historically accurate.

The negatives have been well covered by the professional critics for the most part. The movie seems to try too hard to hit an emotional pitch, but kinda falls flat. There are too many flashback scenes and long (albeit beautiful) shots that never really do what they intend to do. The plot was a bit predictable, and I found the end to be a unsatisfying overall.

This movie was pretty cool but it was a little over-the-top. All the actors were compelling and the scenery, wardrobe and music were great, too. I loved the grizzly bear scene and the first fight scene.

But it got a little ridiculous with the constant grittiness. Reminded me of how the standard of gore keeps getting pushed from Braveheart to Gettysburg to Saving Private Ryan, etc. SPOILERS AHEAD. About the time he rode the horse off the cliff and then proceeded to live in it like a tan-tan, I started to get tired. It stopped being interesting and started being more formulaic revenge fantasy with stuff like a convenient side-kick who conveniently dies.

Basically, they could have done better with what they had. Great actors, beautiful imagery, creative chapters but it seemed like it ran off course in the last 1/3 of the movie.

Based of the novel The Revenant, detailing the real life story of Hugh Glass, Iñárritu tries his absolute best to recreate reality, transporting the audience into the actual history making us feel as though we are in the moment struggling to survive against all odds with Glass, feeling each moment of cold, pain and hurt that DiCaprio's character is feeling within each moment of the film.During this time we develop an emotional attachment with the character as we take on his struggle, his burden to take revenge on the man who left him for dead and took the life of his son.

Where this film struggles to garner higher points is its over-reliance on symbolism, a recurring motif within the film dealing with issues of Religion and Spirituality , in which Glass character keeps seeing and hearing his deceased native american wife who was murdered by an officer prior to the films events, it is in this symbolism that the audience is supposed to appreciate how much glass has truly lost, however with Leonardo DiCaprio's powerhouse performance it essentially become re-enforcing the obvious that only the mentally challenged would struggle to understand.

Supporting actor wise Will Poulter and Domhnall Gleeson give tremendous performances in their respective roles as a hunter and captain of the hunting party. Tom Hardy plays a compelling villain however in my opinion i don't find him to be that tremendous of an actor where his determination towards the role is clearly there, i never got beyond looking as his character as any more than a stereotypical frontier man.

Where the Revenant is a good time, it is a long time, standing at 156 minutes long and with adds included it essentially becomes 3 hours of sitting in the cinema, which essentially isn't a bad thing, however because of how long the film is you can tell that it rushes towards the finish line with the conclusion feeling more or less like a footnote at the bottom of the script. Where the film doesn't necessarily garner the ending it deserves, it doesn't tarnish the brilliant quality that is presented in the rest of the film

Overall the film is a 8.5/10 and is worthy of at watch at your local cinema just for the sheer experience the film gives

Despite this, The Revenant is truly an absorbing and captivating tale. Using the Native Americans vs the white man as it's historical basis, the revenant manages to conjure up impeccable imagery and devilishly clever cinematography to soothe an otherwise harrowing journey. Don't get me wrong, it stings hard, the blood stains the screen and you can feel scars form across your skin as you watch Di Caprio clamber and spit through snow, grass and flesh. As a testament to the Native Americans who lost their homes and family, The Revenant is an undisputed masterpiece, but what it's trying to achieve for Hugh Glass is ultimately, a tad messy. Expand

The Revenant - Review (no spoilers)
By the time the movie ended, I developed a few wrinkles myself along with Leonardo. What starts off as a gripping and grueling arrow versus gun powerball set in the 17th century amidst the beautiful Rockies, quickly turns into a quiet boring documentary about the flora, fauna and the lifestyle of ancient winter survivors. Interspersed somewhere there is a rather juvenile story-line of father avenging the son's death. Usually it is the other way around, but DiCaprio is too old to play someone's son now. Anyway, it's day, then night, then day, then night. Then flesh. Then blood. Then day. Then night. Terrific nat-geo level cinematography though. In the end, the director takes on a challenge of how to gross out the already irritated and tired audience. Well, guess how? More flesh. More blood. Finally the ordeal ends. DiCaprio deserves an Oscar, but not for this movie. Just like Rahman deserved an Oscar for Roja rather than Jai-Ho.

Hardy was also a great presence for his villainous role that also earned him a well deserved nom for Supporting Actor. The ending was OK and helped make up for the tediously boring middle sections.

To clarify on my earlier comment about 'stupid' scenes;

#1 - For whatever reason our hero decides it is a good idea to eat raw liver when their isn't just one but three perfectly good fires around him.

#2 - About half way through the film the cause of all the problems faced by our hero is revealed, I won't say what but really when you consider they meet these guys before and had men walk about the camp they failed to notice the one person the natives we're looking for?

His inability to properly display accents, an overuse of body-language and yelling, and his generic grimace often made me go, "Yep that's him alright". Though with this role I see him much differently. It could be the awful facial hair, but I think it's rooted in the fact that he barely ever speaks. And the character is spent mostly crawling or limping, so the wild gestures are kept in check. Then when the movie gets tense and he really needs to struggle it looks more convincing, raw, and even natural. And speaking of things that look natural let us briefly summarize this cinematography and camera work. it is widely known that film used a lot of natural lighting, the Barry Lyndon technique that just isn't usually seen today. It payed off. I understand that it was incredibly difficult to film and required a lot of extra work, but it works. I sat in the theater (not in IMAX) thinking, "if i visited this place this is exactly what it would look like. I would say that the film has a grey aesthetic, but the backdrops showing a crisp clear image of a foggy forest help it all blend naturally. It is really contributes to 2015's amazing run of beautiful films. Out of all the films this year, Mad Max: Fury Road and this were the best looking. The camera work is also very repetitive, but interesting nonetheless. The film uses juxtaposition all throughout. We may start on a wide helicopter shot of a mountain, only to do a one take zoom to DiCaprio trudging through the snow. Maybe we will have the sun reflect off the camera showing nature in all of it's glory, only to have 'man' use it as a playground for gritty, blood soaked battles. The film likes to go from the larger picture to the little details. I find it to work because we can see how personal and up close the tense situations are. Also the camera feels married to the idea panning. Every sequence involving a dilemma is likely to show the dilemma through a pan to the left or right. It got on my nerves, but really didn't kill anything. Some of the things that are going to turn people are the sequences where DiCaprio is alone and must survive. There is two good character interactions, and one self inflicted medical treatment that felt fresh, but not much else. Giving the film props, it kept with its identity of slow one take shots, DiCaprio not speaking, and beautiful cinematography. Unfortunately they were focused on things that we would have implied anyway. Nothing note worthy or interesting happens with any other character after DiCaprio is on his own. But the characters are still believable and developed well enough. Tom Hardy, especially, pulls of the paranoid, racist, rebel with charm even though it has been done a million times. Sometimes the movie will have a bit of a mixed bag with how much Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) hallucinates, and the hallucinations aren't exactly rocking my mind. The film does a much better job making battles have real weight. The first battle and sequence with the bear is done remarkably well; every hit feels like a crushing blow. Overall the film suffers when it has to have survival, which can be a real problem for people. Though if you excuse that then you are left with a beautifully looking, drama that does a lot to impress the eyes. Expand

Iñárritu's new collaboration with the cinematographer E. Lubezki. And sadly, it fell a bit short of my exaggerated expectations.
From the standpoint of cinematography, Revenant is expectedly gorgeous. Beautiful environments (shot with natural lighting!), gritty realism of the depicted situations, scenes shot from unusual perspectives - everything is as close to perfection as possible.
However, as for the movie's plot and themes, everything turned out to be disappointingly straightforward. It's just a revenge tale. No subtle nuances, no amendments to the classic conception. Besides, I'd say it has some issues with the motivation of the Indian tribe that's hunting the protagonists for a good part of the movie. What is more, while the overall pacing is good for a 2,5+ hours-long movie, it does drop after the first hour noticeably only to pick up around half an hour later.
As for acting, everything is done professionally - both the lead and secondary role actors perform admirably, but as for DiCaprio, I honestly think he's had stronger and more interesting roles than having to growl, squirm and crawl for two and a half hours straight.
In the end, it's a wonderfully acted, breathtakingly filmed, meticulously polished classic tale about a man overcoming all obstacles imaginable to revenge the death of his loved ones, with no twists or additions plot-wise. Is it a good movie? Yes, definitely, very much so. But is it Oscar-worthy? We will find out this February, but I personally wouldn't say so.

This film grips you from the start and makes you feel every ounce of physical and mental pain the characters go through. The direction's a little overly artistic and you're definitely going to feel the length of this movie but completely worth it. For those of you lucky enough not to have seen the trailer, keep it that way as the less you've seen the better. Recommended unless you have a severe fear of bears. Expand

The pace switched from slow to fast too much and then there was those weird dream sequences all of the time. I get it, he killed an American officer to protect his son, but if he is fighting for his life every day and his son has been killed by Hardy, why the **** would he keep dreaming about that one incident? It's just one of the many points that makes this film unrealistic, when that is exactly what it tries so hard to be(realistic).

Worth a watch if your a DiCaprio fan, but it's not his best piece. Wolf of Wall Street and The Departed are way better. I'll even add Gangs of New York and Titanic to that list. Also I actually felt Tom Hardy was the better actor, but that's probably down to fault of the director and I had just watched Legend. Seeing the two wildly different roles one man played made me appreciate his acting so much more.

But yeah, Revenant, mehh..

Slow, overlong, lifeless--except when Tom Hardy is on the screen, and then it's electric. About halfway through, I wondered why I was supposed to care about this guy, beside the lightly-handled (and beautifully shot) annihilation of the native village he lived (?) in with his very pretty (in white man's terms) wife at some point, and his, frankly, weird relationship with his son--I felt no love between them at all, didn't believe they were even related. I guess because his family was murdered we're supposed to immediately feel for him. Except that familial relationship was never established, simply hinted at in dreams and visions, and when he barked at his son to shut up.

I actually felt for Fitzgerald, Tom Hardy's character, because we knew something about him, we knew what he wanted, we knew what his job was, what his contract was for, we know he was getting screwed no matter what. And Tom Hardy imbued his character with amazing depth in just how his expression changed when people would talk to him; he was a desperate man in desparate times. Which I suppose the Glass character was too, but his journey just started becoming totally improbable--I thought of the old silent film serial, remade in the 30s, called The Perils of Pauline, and thought this could be called The Perils of Paul . . . and yes, I know that's not his name. It became a series of coincidences that started to feel writerly and not organic. He flew off a cliff after everything else and was like, let me gut this horse!

And how did the French guys not see the sweat lodge as they were killing Glass's Pawnee bison tartare eating friend? And why didn't anybody wear hats? And how could he not have been hypothermic after being in that cold cold river for so long? And how come he couldn't place the bear right away? He could smell smoke in the air for a fire that had been put out hours ago but he couldn't hear that there was a bear behind him, as he looked all over the place?

A half an hour could have easily been cut. Easily, but none of Tom Hardy. Overrated pseudo-art.

Beautifully shot and acted, The Revenant is certainly a good movie. Unfortunately, it just doesn't know when to move on. Our hero is pushed through one brutal encounter after another to the point that it begins to feel an awful lot like a torture fetish. There is an on-going side-plot that is of little relevance to the overall storyline, except for introducing just a little more brutality into what is already a violent world.

Tom Hardy is the real star of the film, and we see him play at different levels, whereas Di Caprio is constantly turned up to 11. There isn't a scene where he's not suffering, brooding, or murdering. He endures difficulties that make Watership Down look tame, and the whole film plays like a marathon of pain with never a moment of respite. The very sparse moments of relief feel more like a sigh of exhaustion rather than moments of triumph.

I would have liked to see the filmmakers go a little less conventional with their approach to Hardy's character Fitzgerald. In some ways he's the obligatory racist villain cast against Di Caprio's earnest, heroic, damsel-saving protagonist. But with slightly different choices the film could have been less one-dimensional, and Hardy and Di Caprio could have been pitted against each other by fate and not because Hardy is just evil. Hardy's justifications for his actions make sense, and it's not clear why he needed to be lying for them.

DiCaprio and Hardy are spectacular actors and they really show off there skills in this film. As well as them Poulter and Gleeson portray there characters well. DiCaprio makes you feel many emotions throughout from sadness to hatred. This is a fabulous film to kick start 2016. That's just one of the suspension of belief issues that cropped up in The Revenant. I did enjoy the movie, I love outdoor adventures, but so many technical issues cropped up, it became laughable after a while.
Not to mention, the director added a good 30-45 minutes of "preciousness" with a lingering camera on a bloody patch of snow. (Nevermind the gory, gory, and gorier porno stuff. Really, close ups of nasty consumption of raw whatevers? Not necessary!)
Without spoilers, but with cues that those who've seen the movie will get, here are the fact-based, technical issues:
A bear mauling might not kill you but the encounters with cold definitely would do you in -- especially some of the dunkings, right?
A starving indigenous person waiting around in a camp for a white guy to deliver a sandwich? HUH? This person knows how to track, hunt, survive etc.without a Subway delivery.
When you rip the entrails out of a freshly killed animal when the weather is cold, there's a lot steam. (This was a big miss on the part of the director.)
No one builds a 700 pound litter to haul a guy out of the woods. Ridiculous.
How many men do you send out on a posse to catch a bad guy? One guy & an invalid? I never saw a posse that wasn't 5, 6, or 7 guys.
You get the idea ... interesting concept, nice to have drama without a lot of technology, but so many cliches, poor outdoorsmanship and waaaay too long.

Though The Revenant is an exceptionally well presented visual showpiece, it is also entirely nonsensical, ham-fistedly delivering its narrative, which like its protagonist's quest, is entirely devoid of any deep significance when it's through. This is mostly due to a disconnect in logical proceedings, which wouldn't be too big a deal if the film wasn't attempting a realistic portrayal of the world. From the moment of the bear attack all suspension of disbelief is totally gone, leaving you only to shake your head as Glass survives countless fatal situations, and crosses roads with so many people important to plots surrounding him purely by coincidence. Oh, it's because he's the best tracker that side of the country, now it all makes sense -- except for the part where he's been shredded to ribbons by a bear with only wet clothes on his back and in the forty below nights of the frontier. While the visuals and soundtrack accompanying the dream sequences were some of the highlights of the movie, I felt they became a bit heavy handed, adding different visual themes without any real substance. Some leaps in logic cast doubt over the final events of the movie, which really sticks out over whatever symbolism the filmmakers were trying to achieve with those scenes. Without spoiling anything, I will say that the climax of the film is well executed, which is good since it was the only really big payoff to look forward to. As good as it looks, it's never as immersive or as symbolic as it wants to be with its cliched and nonsensical plot, as well as few noteworthy performances. Special commendations go to Tom Hardy, who excellently portrays the only well established character in the entire film. His character is the only one I found to have inspired any curiosity, and that's a shame since he's the villain. Some great visuals aside, it's a miserable experience that strains your senses (particularly your ability to hear what characters are saying - my experience seemed to have a very poor sound mix with muffled, mumbling voices). You won't get much complexity from this movie. Very little dialogue is actually said in the movie. Most of it is told from the actions and reactions to the world that the movie is set in, which is the real star of the show. DiCaprio does a great job at the main character Glass, and his reactions to what happens to him is basically the whole movie. The pacing is a bit slow and, for a close to 3 hour movie, it can be hard to sit through some of the more dull moments that happen. However the wonderful and gory fights scenes take the cake and deliver a very realistic way of fighting, whether it be against man or beast. I definitely enjoyed this movie more than Birdman as the focus on, basically, one character was far more precise here than in Birdman with it's many different scene stealing characters. Tom Hardy does a good job as the title villain but his thick accent can make understanding some of his lines a chore. I'd recommend this movie to alot of people, with the mindset that they can sit through alot of down moments and some definite gore that you don't see in alot of other movies of this type. Expand

"My heart bleeds. But revenge is in the creator's hands".

The Revenant is set in the 1820s, in the uncharted wilderness of America, Hugh Glass set out with a hunting party on an expedition. Glass was mauled by a bear and left for dead but through sheer will and to get back to his family, Glass survived - but that wasn't the only thing on his mind as he set out to payback the men who left him behind.

I remember last year around January time when I saw the two images for The Revenant, with Leo holding a Kentucky Flintlock Rifle looking like he's not playing around. Just by those two images caught my interest. I then found out it was directed by the magnificent Alejandro González Iñárritu who did the Oscar wining "Birdman" (A movie that I personal loved). The Revenant quickly became my most anticipated movie of 2015, as I was looking forward to this movie more than Star Wars, and yes I said it. And after finally seeing the movie myself, I can safely say that I was not disappointed. The Revenant is one of the most stunning, brutal, intense, grizzly movie experience I've ever had. The movie isn't for everyone, but I loved it.

Alejandro González Iñárritu is starting to become my 3rd favorite director working today, because he's such an old school director when it comes to storytelling by the use of art. There's been a lot of drama happening behind the scenes of this movie, with the weather stopping the production or if someone made a mistake while filming, the crew must stop for the day and wait until tomorrow, because one mistake could lose a lot of day light for a scene (It was shot in natural lighting). One of the studios suggested that the movie should be shot using computer generated to make things much easier, but luckily Iñárritu said no to the idea by stating, "If we ended up in greenscreen with coffee and everybody having a good time, everybody will be happy, but most likely the film would be a piece of **** And after seeing the movie I gotta say that it was the perfect decision, because it's very rare for a director today to take that risk and avoid what the studio says. Yes there are some CGI scenes, but the way that the animated effect's blended together with the practical effect's is handled incredibly well. This is one of the best directed I've seen in 2015 and I know Iñárritu already won an Oscar already, but I hope he wins another one for this, because never before have I seen a revenge tale presented so unique and utterly magnificent.

I respect Leonardo DiCaprio as an actor, but in this movie, he sleeps inside of a dead horse naked and eats raw food from animals, now if this doesn't get him an Oscar, nothing will. He's performance in this movie is what a call ''a silent performance'', because Leo barley has that much lines in the movie and the only time he dose get to talk is in a different language (Which Leo has said it was tricky to learn the language). DiCaprio has proven time and time again that he's more than the pretty face actor, but in this movie I only saw Hugh Glass, not DiCaprio. That's my biggest praise I have to give to Leo as he had to deliver all the emotions, the pain, the tortured soul that Hugh Glass was and it's all through his face and eyes, and trust me when I say this but it's not easy as you think. We are so use to seeing Leo as the angry, pretty boy billionaire in every movie he's in, but in this movie I thought he was fantastic, as he played the man who lost everything and the tortured soul that Hugh was as a person was. With very little lines he had, he still manages to make a powerful performance that's so far his best. I really hope Leo gets an Oscar for this.

Tom Hardy also gave an Oscar worthy performance in this movie. I've heard that some people had trouble understanding him in this movie (Or just in everything that he's in really). Sometimes I didn't understand what he said but most of the time I did. But all that a side, I still think he was fantastic in the movie. He really added a lot to his character, because sometimes you understand the things that he dose in movie and yes the things he dose in the movie are wrong, but in a rough environment that these people are in, you would likely do the same. I'm not sure if he would get in for best supporting actor, but I hope he dose.

I'm running out of things to say about Emmanuel Lubezki breathtaking cinematography. The camera work and how he makes the camera feel like a character of it's own is seriously impressive. Lubezki captures nature on film, that shows it's beauty and it's unpredictable surprises. The people running the Oscars should just give Lubezki his third Oscar right now, because he's going to take that third trophy home.

Now for the flaws and there's not that many for me: Some of the character logic towards the end of the movie didn't make that much senses to me, and that's really it.

Overall The Revenant is one of most intense, stunning, brutal movies I've seen in 2015. The score is haunting, the editing was top notch and that bear attack scene was just terrifying, I mean how the hell did they do that?. I don't know about you, but I honestly can't stop thinking about this movie. It's one of those movies that sticks with you after it's over and it isn't going away anytime soon.

The Revenant's story is flat and difficult to accept as realistic or mythic. However, what storyThe Revenant's story is flat and difficult to accept as realistic or mythic. It may be magic realism but that doesn't make this particular story an effective narrative- its strengths lie in the visual trip it takes you on. However, what story it does have ruins that visual trip, unlike in the best works of Malick or Tarkovsky, where the natural imagery and the dreaminess better compliment the narrative, and vice-versa.

It's not realistic, despite being 'based' on a true story, because it keeps the main character alive past all biological possibility. (For those who would quibble with the 'true story' factor, the actual story of Hugh Glass doesn't have the main character defy death ten times over. Furthermore it's a 'true story' of a mountain man doing something extraordinary. This usually means it's a tall tale.)

And if Glass' death-defiance is meant to subtly show the main character as a kind of undead or supernatural being (or ambiguously or liminally so), that idea is not developed interestingly. Even worse, if Glass' endurance and death-defiance are supernatural, then his determination is irrelevant and the theme seems to be: 'family love powers magic revenge'. That's an F for story to me. I suppose that there could be some sort of grand allegorical meaning, but since the story doesn't work on the literal level, that potential is irrelevant to me.

Although others may see it differently, the highest score I can give a narrative film with a zero for story is a 3 out of 10. I find it sadly amusing that after Birdman, with its examination of the perils of ego, Inarritu follows with an egomaniacal stunt of his own.

It is extraordinary; although, it is a movie about revenge; it is also a love story between the film and the audience. It might take a decade or more, before we/I see a movie so interminable. It is filmmaking at its best, so I asked myself how will I view future movies, since, I have seen the greatest movie ever made. Expand

The movie is long, violent, gross, authentic, and intense. Cinematography is absolutely stunning. This is one of those movies that has to be seen in a theater on a big screen. DiCaprio will definitely be nominated for Oscar for this role even though there is very little dialog there.
If not for the screenplay, I would give it 10.

The cinematography in the Revenant was mind blowing. The battle sequences are harrowing and incredibly immersive. Lubezki deserves an Oscar for the cinematography in this film no doubt. Every moment watching this film I felt like I was in the same environment as Glass. It is a very long film, but because of how immersive the film was I never felt drawn out or slow to me. If you could only watch one film in 2015 then this would be the film I would recommend. Expand

Despite the cgi in The Revenant it seems to be the counter-concept to the mass of synthetic blue-screen Hollywood movies. Sadly because of DiCaprio nobody is talking about the brilliant performance by Tom Hardy. Expand

Mad Max: Oregon Trail

An impressive technical exercise that is often beautiful to look at and easy to admire, this is a surprisingly superficial and simplistic look at survival and revenge in the wilderness. Leonardo DiCaprio tortures and degrades himself for your amusement for two-and-a-half hours, which is an impressive act of commitment, but doesn't do much to develop a character or tell a story. This is the 'Blair Witch' school of acting, where the exhaustion and annoyance of a real life actor is used as lazy short hand for some sort of transcendent terror that the film is too slavish to it's capital C 'Craft' to ever achieve. Again, Emmanuel Lubezki proves why he's one of the greats, but even his impressive use of natural lighting here can seem like a stiffing gimmick as one over-cast grey landscape bleeds into another. You'll keep hoping for some sunlight to eventually break through the monotony and add some dimension to both the scenery and the story.

Sucking every inch of beauty out of the Alberta setting, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki has done something incredible in this film; every shot is beautiful. Rarely has there been a film so luciously gorgeous, but Lubezki has done it. This may honestly be one of the prettiest films I have ever seen. The direction from Alejandro Inarritu is fantastic and epic vision for the film certainly came to fruition. A brilliant modern day epic, the film's makeup is also incredible and the acting from Leonardo DiCaprio under this makeup is phenomenal. He does not say too too much, but he does not have to in order to deliver one of the year's best performances. Tom Hardy and Domhnall Gleeson are also phenomenal and almost threaten to steal the show at times. Overall, a brutal epic, The Revenant is a tad long and can be slow in parts, but with brilliant thematic elements and the best cinematography in a film in a long time, the film is a wonderous cinematic achievement. A pointless drawn out exercise in continual extreme violence.

Blood all over people's faces as they tear raw flesh out of bison and eat it, or eat fish alive as they wriggle in their hands; flesh being torn off human bones up close in detail, skulls being blown off. A woman being dragged into the woods and raped. A hot burning stick being applied sizzling to a neck wound. This is the single most violent movie I have ever seen - Tarantino is a walk in the park compared to this. Revenant is easily far and away the longest stretch of up close detailed granular violence of any movie in history. You would have to be either completely anesthetized or a sociopath not to find this film totally and completely disgusting.

The story - is there a story? - barely. The story is as simple revenge story. Twenty years ago it would have starred Mel Gibson. But it would not have dragged on for over two and a half hours. I wanted to leave halfway through but I stayed because I was with a friend.

I should add that the beating DiCaprio takes gets to the point where it is just so unbelievable, at one point, where he falls off a cliff but an evergreen tree breaks his fall, it was so much like Wile E. Coyote, that the audience burst out laughing. It wasn't supposed to be funny. It was just so ridiculous.

From now on I'm going to be much more careful about what I see in theaters. I feel that Revenant not only wasted 4 hours of my life (door to door) but took something from me. I left feeling abused, broken, dispirited. And for what? This movie had no true drama. No true characterization of anyone, not even of Dicaprio's character, and it had no point.

Yes some of the cinematography was nice. That's why I give it a 3. Otherwise it would get a zero

Boring, long and most obnoxiously pointless. I could have lived without seeing this story. I don't feel like it needed to be made.. which is the sign of a terrible movie i guess.

The cinematography, the set pieces, the landscapes, everything is absolutely gorgeous. There is some beautiful overly-long and wide takes, every shot is more impressive than the other and executed to perfection. The story is quite simple, a man versus nature guided by revenge, but like in mad max 4, a story doesn't need to be complicated to be good when it is well executed. That's what this movie does, the concept is simple, but is so well-made, cohesive and entertaining that it doesn't matter. Expand
