It's hilarious that Hollywood is desperately trying to showcase empowered women's films, using the same resources that the industry labels as clichés.

The Princess believes that focusing on violence, action sequences, women involved in those sequences and the occasional feminist commentary will be enough to mask its total lack of substance, depth and credibility.

This is an empty film in every sense of the word, which may be entertaining enough for anyone looking for nothing more than to numb themselves for a while in front of the TV. Otherwise this poor attempt, with the quality of a CW show, will be a waste of your time.

Joey King stars as a princess betrothed to a man who is out to steal the throne from her father. She spends the entire movie fighting her way to a happy ending. Director Le-Van Kiet has created the almost-continuous, against-all-odds action scenes with clever choreography and smart staging. Some of the effects aren't convincing, but that doesn't affect the fights. Even with its medieval trappings and silly premise, this movie takes a modern approach to action and succeeds with lots of kick-ass fun. Expand

Some decent fight choreography and action set pieces. Awkward plotting and performances with not much to go on.

I found the action scenes quite nice, albeit unreallistic, but its just a movie so doesn't matter. Plot-wise though it offered really little as most of the movie was just one long action scene

I really really liked the action scenes, I think they are the best and most "realistic" female fighting scenes since Atomic Blonde. The movie invests time in the character showing us that she trained from childhood to be a warrior and her skills are hard earned, she is no Mary Sue. Her fighting style is based on evasion, blocking, speed and outright agression, they don't pull a 355 here where a tiny girl throws men twice her size across the room. When fighting heavily armored opponents she actually goes for the weak points in the armor, I think that is the first time I see this on screen, this how you do this in real life. And she gets hit, she gets hurt and pays in blood. If you compare this to Guyladrial, this little movie is so far ahead of billion dollar production, its hard to grap. And finally, Joes King has facial expression compared to you know who.

If you're looking for a fun, violent popcorn flick where a raging redhead stabs a goon in the eye with a hairpin I'd log onto Hulu and give this one a watch. "The Princess" doesn't waste its audience's time, moving at a quick clip through its relatively short 94-minute runtime. The movie is a delightful action thriller in the same vein as Hardcore Henry that uses the now well-worn trope of the independent warrior-princess as a righteous framing device for an acrobatic energetic bloodbath. The fight choreography, although not the best I've seen this year, was fun and interesting throughout. Actress Joey King carries the film with her performance as the titular Princess. Although film certainly leans into the action girl trope, King keeps the Princess grounded and real-feeling throughout. Hollywood has an unfortunate tendency to make battle-capable women quippy and untouchable–showing compact women effortlessly cleaving through wave after wave of bulky men with a smile. When watching King's performance, you can see the princess struggling through every encounter. The Princess's skill and whit are balanced by a very human fallibility, which adds tension and stakes to every blade-flashing encounter. Expand
