The 1s and 2s on here are clearly folk that subscribe to the hand maiden's tale of law. The movie isnt strike you over the head obvious, it pulls in good performances from his actors and actresses to paint a picture of normalcy that slowly unravels into craziness. If youre a decent human being that likes a good thriller you'll like this. If you're fairly fearful of your masculinity you probably wont.

Sidenote, I wish the days would return when the hateful bigots would keep their negativity to themselves.

Perhaps I like a movie where two girls exact out a weird from of revenge that is as unsettling as it is gruesome. A gruesome beauty in which an abusive man gets punished.

I honestly liked the movie. I can see that it wouldn't be very popular as it is just too offbeat and gruesome in parts. But not the kind of gruesome that would amuse people who are attracted to that sort of thing. It is part of the story rather than the thing in itself as in a horror movie. The movie toys with the storyline and it has some twists that are a bit far reaching. Some of the story gets explained. Perhaps the movie can do better without the explaining. I liked the acting and the way the movie starts so innocently and then slowly turns into something darker as the layers of the story are peeled away to show another story underneath.

This is one of the few movies that I rate higher than both critics and users. I found it entertaining and was satisfied with the ending. I'm guessing a lot of people came into this with high expectations or something.

I like campy stuff, I like absurd stuff, but this movie lacked any real personality. It didn’t take time to develop any characters or atmosphere, it simply revealed their characters with plot twists and over explanations. It will hold your attention and at the same time add very little thrill factor due to the bad pacing and constant re-explaining of what you just witnessed. The editing felt rushed, like they were too busy trying to shock and trick the viewer rather than to build up any real tension. And this was listed as a thriller. It was pretty ridiculous by the end. Netflix will make anything at this point if a few semi known d list actors are in it. If you have literally nothing else to watch, and you like shallow base revenge stories, then I guess watch it. Just keep your expectations very low. Expand

The premise is laughably stupid, the dialogue is badly written/repetitive, it's corny but self-serious, and painfully hollow. Don't worry, the male writers and director were sure to shoehorn in totally irrelevant, "hot" girl-on-girl action to hold your attention within the first 30 minutes. Don't believe the marketing hype. It's not feminist, and it's not scary. Expand

I can’t say I didn’t enjoy this movie, but I’m not sure I can defend it as a good movie. Technically, it’s pretty well-made. The actors do a good job, it’s well-shot, the effects are decent and it’s intense. However, the script is really stupid. It relies on WAY too many coincidences to be believable. Without giving anything away, we are supposed to believe that every detail was carefully planned out and I just don’t buy it. It’s also pretty tonally inconsistent. Sometimes it’s a horror movie, sometimes it’s an action-thriller and sometimes it feels like a comedy. I’m not exactly sure what this movie is even going for sometimes. Still, this movie is fast and engaging. I have mixed feelings about it, but that’s because it’s a very mixed film. I’d say give it a watch yourself and draw your own conclusion. Expand

Watched the latter followed by the former and it is no contest. The difference in ratings can only be due to the lack of woke politics present in this film, despite a far more realistic depiction of women. That's right, TWO strong female leads. Not elizabeth moss and a cast of caricatures! Unfortunate how critics have changed. It is not a perfect movie by any stretch (both have big plot holes) but I would gladly rewatch as it is realistic enough to actually put you in suspense and care for the characters which is a lot more than you can say about The Invisible Plot. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. quite a good horror movie, preying on the insecurities of parents but again only a '6 star' because it did not know how to end well and the lesbian theme, though understable due to the intense hatred of men, was a bit too yucky for me.
is it a trend now? Gay movies too passe..... what next? movie industry moral going down the drain....
and also, why suddenly pulling China into the plot? totally unnecessary bashing of Chinese people. BTW i loved shanghai. do chinese woman caress a man's private part in public, in the front row. chinese are very sexual in private but no way we will do such outrageous act in public. nonsensical script. btw.... why introduce the element of flu infection. a totally distracted self indulgent scriptwriter or producer perhaps.
nevertheless despite all its misgivings, it's a watchable fare in the realm of 'nothing to watch anymore'netflix.
we should have watched 'Beat'but then, too many afro american theme movies these days.

Nothing has me laughing harder than the comments talking about how this is a "masterpiece" because it makes you feel uncomfortable, disturbed, emotional pain and that it reflects the "difficulties women go through."

I saw a video posted on the web of mexican cartel members cutting the guts out of a rival gang member while he is alive and screaming. I felt uncomfortable, disturbed, enraged, and pain, was that video a masterpiece?

There were many other issues with the movie, particularly in how unbelievable it was, and other technicals like pacing and camera shots. I won't even bother getting into how ridiculous the plot was and wildly divergent actions in the first half of the movie and the latter revealed motivations. Those issues were minor compared to problem with the message of the movie.

I empathize with everyone who lived vicariously through the film and saw it as feeling vindicated or felt some sense of justice. But recognize what you are enjoying and promoting, perfectly encapsulated in the final shot-- the sadistic enjoyment from the subjugation and torture of others. And if that is justice to you, then who is left that isn't a depraved criminal?
